Reflection The feast of the Assumption of Mary is one of the most important days in the Church’s calendar year. It is one which reminds us of the devotion and care conveyed by Jesus’ mother. Not only was she able to place her complete faith and trust in God, she was able to achieve this with grace and honour despite the challenges faced by women at the time. Moreover, this day also reminds us of the sacrifices of all mothers and how they work tirelessly to assist their families in whatever ways possible. For instance, Pope Benedict during his reign reinforced the role of mothers when he talked about the ‘gift of the mother’ and how we should ‘pray to Mary to help us find the right path every day’. For the exceptional young men at St Mary’s, this challenges them to be men of complete respect and appreciation for all women and all the sacrifices they make for them. Thus, this respect displayed by our young men benefits not only the college but also the community through their actions and attitudes. Mary serves as the epitome of faith through her actions and her willingness to trust in God without question. This would have been challenging, and the suffering she endured due to this pain is unimaginable to most of us. Essentially, she was a vehicle for the peace and salvation through Jesus and his actions. It is through these actions that we are always reminded of hope and how it continues to flow throughout our society. Thus, Mary, through her faith, was able to go to heaven (body and soul) providing light for all who require it in their lives (Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 966). Edmund Rice, our founder, had a strong devotion to Mary as well and respected the sacrifices made by women especially with his wife perishing post labour. In particular, this understanding led him to teach the young men at his schools the value of women in our society and how they are imperative to make the world the best that it can be. Due to this long-standing history, it is no wonder that St Mary’s serves as a white ribbon representative and continues to promote a positive attitude towards women and all that they accomplish in our society. Overall, through the points mentioned above, it is clear to see the benefit of Mary in our lives and how she was able to demonstrate faith, sacrifice and hope through her actions. Moreover, it is our responsibility to retain this memory and appreciate all the prominent women in our own lives and respect and care for them accordingly. Written by Mr Edward Russell – Ministries Coordinator Assumption Mass and Semester One Academic Awards Thank you to all special guests, parents and friends who attended our Assumption Mass and Semester One Academic Awards Ceremony today. We are truly blessed to be part of a community who allows for the growth of our boys and recognises his sense of purpose and his striving for success. We particularly wish to acknowledge those students who have achieved to a high academic standard over Semester 1 of this year. We congratulate those boys for the effort, determination and focus that they have shown to achieve this particular ‘crown’ of academic success. St Mary’s College Art Show The St Mary’s College Annual Art Show is on tonight from 6.00 pm in the Brothers’ House. This art exhibition will display students’ work from Years 6–12 and St Mary’s College Indigenous artists will be featured. Mr Alan Bruce, Former Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Visual Art at USQ, lecturing in Drawing will open the art show, judge and present prizes. The evening is always most enjoyable with finger food catered by our Hospitality students and music by our Music department. I thank our Art Teacher, Ms Anne O’Sullivan, for her organisation and preparation of the boys. Do come along. I look forward to viewing the St Mary’s College boys’ art works for 2017. This week, Year 10 and Year 11 Graphics students visited Grand Central Shopping Centre as part of their Shop Design Project. Students had the opportunity to visit a variety of stores and speak to managers about the design of their shops and how the various design aspects related to the success of the store. Students found this opportunity

valuable in assisting them in developing their own ideas. We are looking forward to meeting with the retail design manager and receiving his feedback at the end of the project. Students are now completing their designs and then will be creating computer models of their shops.

FROM THE HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT There is plenty going on in our History and Geography classes this semester and we are looking forward to taking our Year 7 Geography classes to Wivenhoe Dam this Thursday for their field study on water in the world and the water cycle - which they are studying in Science. Boys need to be at school by 8.15 am so that buses can leave at 8.30 am. Boys are to wear their sports uniform and they must have a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. It is also essential that they charge their iPads the night before so that they can take all their photographs. All boys will be back at the College by 3.00 pm to connect with buses. Year 7 students will be

briefed in their Humanities classes this week about what to take – please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions. Something that is exciting is the World War 1 and 2 History Tour which will be taking place in the September school holidays in 2018. The tour will take us through London, the many battlefields on the Western Front, Normandy and the D Day landing sites, France and Berlin. This is an all inclusive price tour which is a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the efforts and sacrifices that have paved the freedom that we all enjoy today. Currently we have 23 students and 11 adults who have committed to the tour. There are still places available for students who may like to participate. Obviously a tour of this nature is not cheap, but the College has a payment plan and we are fundraising to assist in offsetting the cost. If your son will be in Year 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2018 and you would like more information, please contact me on [email protected] at your earliest convenience. Students do not need to be studying history, they only need to show an interest and enthusiasm and preparedness to be good ambassadors for the College. I look forward to the remainder of the year. Mrs Liz Frame, Curriculum Leader Humanities – [email protected]
