Week 8: A Reflection

Week 8: A ReflectionPodcasting,Online Video, Slidecasting, and Slidesharing in Libraries and Information Organisations

What is the role of podcasting, online video, slidecasting and slidesharing in libraries and information organisations? Multiple benefits and uses, including:Information Literacy InstructionConnection and AccessibilityConvenience and PermanenceAppeals to a larger range of learning stylesEasy to use and affordablePromotes real learning while saving librarians time

PodcastingPodcasts are currently used in numerous ways to enhance services to users, including:Connecting users to talks and lectures at these organisations especially helpful for those unable to attendProviding a permanent way to preserve these talks in a low-cost, convenient, and easy to use mannerProviding a fixed reference point for users when accessing past talks

Slidecasting and SlidesharingRole:Information Literacy Instruction helps give context to what is being discussed.Promotion of library programs, services, activities, etc.

Examples:How to use the catalogueHow to send an emailHow to use a databaseSlideshow versions of tutorials, photographs of library events, etc.

Online Video and VodcastingUsed for similar purposes:InstructionRecordings of important events guest speakers, story hour, etc.Video tours of the library

Do I see these as enhancements to the existing work, or services in their own right? Both, but primarily as an enhancement to existing work, because:There is a connection to the work already being doneThere is a connection to the goals of the library or organisation, especially when it comes to providing equal access to information for all users.
