OUTCOMESThis product directly links

to the Grade 4 Prescribed Learning Outcomes

for British Columbia:* identify sources of

light and sound* explain properties of light

(e.g. travels in a straight path, can be reflected)

REFLECTIONReflection

* Introduce the terms “transmit” and “absorb” at this time. Translucent and transparent objects transmit light. Opaque objects absorb light. Fill out these sections on the 4 Corner Foldable.

Ask 'how do you see? How do you know I am standing here right now? What about if the lights were off? Could you still see me? Why is that?”

* To be able to see 3 things must happen – (Start at 1:55)Show YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU6rp2HfE8M

* Discuss video -the three things are: 1. There must be a source of light2. The light bounces off (reflects) an object3. The light hits our eye.

* Students complete diagram on following page to cut out and glue to lapbooks.

* Experiment: See following page* Have students write their definition in the 4 Corner Foldable and illustrate.

EXPERIMENTReflection Experiment

1. Give each student an index card. Have them write their name so it fills the entire space.

2. Give each student a mirror. Look at their name in the mirror. What happened? Why?

Students should be able to recognize that the image is being presented to the mirror reversed, and light is bouncing off the letters just as it is being shown to the mirror. You can prove it by writing on a piece of overhead transparency and showing that in front of a mirror from the front and backsides.

3. Now, give each student a piece of tinfoil. Look in it. Can you see your face? Can you see your name on the index card reflect in it?

4. Crumple the tin foil.5. Smooth it out and look again. What happened?Relate to the fact that light travels in a straight line. When the tinfoil is

crumpled, the beams of light travel in all different directions and can not produce a clear image.

Four Corner Minibook: Cut along outer square. Fold on inner lines. The printed words should be on the outside.

REFRACTION* Experiment: Fill a clear glass with water, and place a pencil

inside. (One per every two or three students). Any guesses on why they think the pencil looks split in two? Give each group a coin to sink in their cup. Use the pencil to try and “spear” the coin. Can they? Is it easier to do it looking from the top or side?

* Watch YouTube video: Bill Nye Bending and Bouncing Light http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD1544bM_c4

* Explain refraction. If you have prisms at your school, you can also experiment further as Bill does in the video!

* Have students write their definition in the 4 corner Foldable and illustrate.
