This Sunday: 1 Samuel 3:1-10 [11-20]; Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18;
1 Corinthians 6:12-20; John 1:43-51
This week’s theme is revealing of Jesus as the Son of God and the call
of the first disciples. The Hebrew Bible reading undergirds this
emphasis with the story of the call of Samuel. Samuel is a towering
figure in the Old Testament, the high priest and prophet who listens to
the Lord and obeys the Lord’s word. He is the one who anointed Israel’s
first king, Saul. When Saul failed to obey the Lord, Samuel anointed
David to become the greatest king in Israel's history, and precursor of
Israel’s messianic hopes. The gospel writers Matthew and Luken make
sure we understand that Jesus is a descendant of David.
The psalm emphasizes the intimate relationship that God has with those
who follow. Paul, in this Sunday’s second lesson, draws out the
implications of this intimate relationship with God: what we do with our
bodies matters because we belong to the Lord.
The gospel tells John’s version of the call of the second pair of
disciples: Philip, and Nathaniel. (Andrew and Peter were allied in the
preceding verses.) Nathaniel utters the first confession of Jesus as the
Son of God. That is this Sunday’s epiphany, or revealing.

PRELUDE
WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
The assembly stands.
THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM
In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism,
we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness.
Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.
We give you thanks, O God,
for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters
and by your Word you created the world,
calling forth life in which you took delight.
Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family.
Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom.
At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy
Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons,
making us heirs of your promise and servants of all.
We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life,
and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ.
Shower us with your Spirit,
and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.
To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
Amen.

Psalm 139
1LORD, you have | searched me out;
O LORD, you | have known me.
2You know my sitting down and my | rising up;
you discern my thoughts | from afar. 3You trace my journeys and my | resting-places
and are acquainted with | all my ways.
4Indeed, there is not a word | on my lips,
but you, O LORD, know it | altogether. R 5You encompass me, behind | and before,
and lay your | hand upon me.
6Such knowledge is too wonder- | ful for me;
it is so high that I cannot at- | tain to it. 13For you yourself created my | inmost parts;
you knit me together in my | mother’s womb.
14I will thank you because I am mar- | velously made;
your works are wonderful, and I | know it well. R 15My body was not hid- | den from you,
while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths | of the
earth.
16Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of
them were
Written in your book;
my days were fashioned before they | came to be. 17How deep I find your | thoughts, O God!
How great is the | sum of them!
18If I were to count them, they would be more in number | than the
sand;
to count them all, my life span would need to | be like yours. R

HYMN OF THE DAY HERE I AM, LORD ELW 574
Apostles Creed
Let us confess our faith together.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead. *
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS
Assisting Minister: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ
Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Each petition of the prayers concludes with these words.
Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Assisting Minister: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for
whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ,
our Lord, who taught us to pray…
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
BLESSING
Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever.
Amen.
