Wind Power Potential at PakistanExploitable wind power potential at Pakistan is atleast 200,000 MW including on-shore and off-shore.

This potential is available at Southern Sindh,Coastal Balochistan, Northern Areas and some hillyareas of Punjab.

Yearly average wind speed at most of locationsexceeds 7 meters/second.

MET department of Pakistan is installing windmasts at all areas having wind potential for precisewind speeds measurements all over the year.

RENEWABLE ENERGY POTENTIAL IN PAKISTAN

TARGETS:

• DEVELOPMENT OF WIND AND SOLAR ENERGY TO MEETAT LEAST 5% OF TOTAL INSTALLED CAPACITYTHROUGH RE RESOURCES BY 2030 ( i. e. 9700 MW )

• ELECTRIFICATION OF 7874 REMOTE, OFF–GRIDVILLAGES IN PROVINCES OF SINDH & BALOCHISTANTHROUGH RENEWABLE ENERGY

CURRENT STATUS OF WIND PROJECTPOLICY

GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINATION FOR TARIFF FOR WIND POWER GENERATION, DEVELOPED BY THE MINISTRY FOR WATER & POWER IN CONSULTATION WITH AEDB, WERE APPROVED BY ECC IN FEBRUARY 2006.

POLICY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR

POWER GENERATION HAS BEEN APPROVED AND ISSUED BY THE GOVERNMENT IN JANUARY 2007.

ALLOCATION OF LAND

AEDB HAS SO FAR IDENTIFIED 50,000 ACRES OF GOVERNMENT LAND IN SINDH.

23,646 ACRES OF LAND (19,807 ACRES IN GHARO AND 3,839 ACRES IN JHIMPIR) HAS SO FAR BEEN ALLOCATED TO 15 INVESTORS.

10,330 ACRES OF LAND IS BEING PROVISIONALLY ALLOCATED TO 7 MORE WIND INVESTORS.

Solar Energy Potential at Pakistan

All Pakistan, especially Balochistan, Sindh and SouthernPunjab, receives abundant Solar radiation about 3000hours/year. This is on the highest side of global averages.Exploitable potential of Solar energy at country level is of theorder of 100,000 MW. Some remote villages have beenelectrified by off-grid solar installations. Grid-connected pilotSolar Projects are also being installed.

Development status of Grid-Connected Solar Power Projects

(i) AEDB and NTDC are developing Energy Purchase Agreement forSolar Power Projects.

(ii) NTDC, through its Grid Code Review Panel, is bringingmodifications of existing Grid Code for grid integration of SolarPower Projects

(iii) 2 Nos. IPPs have got issued LOIs from AEDB for installation ofSolar Power Projects.

(iv) Punjab Government, with co-operation of Government of Japan, isinstalling a 2 MW PV Solar Power Project at Bahawalpur city at fasttrack basis.

(v) M/s Akhtar Solar, a private company, has started assembling PVSolar panels at their factory near Islamabad.
