MESSAGE THE SUPERINTENDENT:
It is unbelievable how quickly my first school year with Lakewood City Schools has gone by! It has been an
amazing journey that I have been so grateful to take together with our students, staff, and families! As we look
forward to planning for next year, so many exciting projects are percolating that have me eager to come to work
each day. From expanded preschool and post-secondary partnerships to a new strategic vision (stay tuned for this),
Lakewood City Schools is ramping up its 21st Century learning model! Thank you for helping make year one such
an interesting and memorable one.
It wouldn’t be an end-of-year message without wishing our seniors congratulations on their coming graduation and
offering our best wishes as they move on to the next chapter of their lives. Those who are continuing on with their
education are heading to higher learning institutions as diverse as our students: Cleveland State, Cuyahoga
Community College, The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Heidelberg College, University of
Southern California, Indiana University, Penn State University, Oberlin College, Lehigh University, and Rhodes
College to name a few. We are proud of each of you and we hope you leave Lakewood High with fond memories
of your days with the Lakewood City Schools.

All middle school students (those entering into grade 6, 7, and 8 this fall) will have a required summer reading assign-ment for their language arts class. Students will need to read one book from the list provided and complete a required assignment. The assignment will be posted on the school’s website in June. This assignment will be part of a special event in the fall during language arts class as a culmination to reading this summer. Check back on the website for all the details this summer. Thanks! 6th Grade Sixth grade ELA classes have covered the standards and concepts in order to be successful on the recent ELA AIR test. We are now finishing the final month of school by applying these concepts and reading a variety of great books in our classrooms. In science, students will be finishing the year studying rocks and the rock cycle. The students will also compete in small groups by designing and building a spaghetti tower that can support a ping pong ball with limited materials and time.
Students in Mrs. Thompson's Reading Edge class will travel back in time with an Ellis Island simula-tion, a culminating activity after completing the unit on immigration. Students will assume the identity of an immigrant that did actually travel through Ellis Island in the 1900s and will simulate their experi-ences. 6th grade students in ESL classes, along with the 7th and 8th graders in ESL, will be "blasting off" into summer by building and launching their own model rockets as part of a culminating science vocabulary activity.

The AIR tests are behind us! The students worked very hard each day on these.
We have moved on to a study of Greek mythology. We are reading and discussing
numerous myths, and students are working in groups to bring a myth to life for
their classmates. Self-Legacy Projects are due 5/15 (rubric is on Google Classroom).
We will end the year with some mystery stories and logic activities.
All students should be reading for at least 20 minutes every night. Please check
progress book every night for information about the material covered in class and
any homework due dates. Please email or call me whenever you have any
questions or concerns. Thank you for all of your support this year. This was truly a
wonderful group of students!

Eighth Grade News
Social studies students are looking at the growing sectional divisions between the North and South that were emerging in our nation. These differences included views on economy and slavery. We will look at compromises created as an attempt to settle some of the differences before giving way to violence and the Civil War. Students will end the year studying the difficult task of slowly trying to unite our nation during the Reconstruction period and the remaining challenges from this period in history.
In Algebra, students applied their experiences from previously taught lessons as they transformed quadratic functions from standard form to vertex form, f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k. The strategy of completing the square is used to solve quadratic equations when the quadratic expression cannot be easily factored. Some solutions were irrational. Students drew conclusions about the properties of irrational numbers, including irrational number system under various operations. Next week, students use the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations that cannot be easily factored. Students understand that the discriminant, b^2-4ac, can be used to determine whether a quadratic equation has one, two, or no real solutions.
Standardized math tests will be given on May 7 & 8, 2019. Encourage good study habits and challenge critical thinking skills. Your child has been equipped with practice problems. Be sure to provide time for practice tests so she/he is not surprised by any content on the test.
In Math 8, students were introduced to bivariate data. Students distinguished linear patterns from nonlinear patterns based on scatter plots. Students described positive and negative trends in scatter plots. Next, students identify and describe unusual features in scatter plots, such as clusters and outliers. Then, students informally fit a line to data displayed in the scatter plot. Students make predictions based on the graph of the line that has been fit to data.
Standardized math tests will be given on May 7 & 8, 2019. Encourage good study habits and challenge critical thinking skills. Your child has been equipped with practice problems. Be sure to provide time for practice tests so she/he is not surprised by any content on the test.
The science department will wrap up the year with a few interesting activities in life sciences
and genetics. They will also have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities including
paper rocket launching and the traditional egg drop competition! Please remember to look for
upcoming information if your child will be attending Cedar Point/Science Day on 5/22.

Hola amigos, marzo- March has flown by quickly and here we await the daffodils and tulips. Espero
que no haya mas nieve. ( I hope there is no more snow.)
We are in the final quarter of the year and Spanish students have just finished presenting a weather
presentation and a city diorama presentation they wrote, edited, practiced and presented before their
classmates- and with no notes, no scripts, nor written clues. The student generated the language of
date, high and low temperatures, what events are common during the seasons, present and past
events (past tense verbs). For the city diorama, each had to cut and paste a small model town and tell
about a variety of the 15 places they included. It all came from memory and their previously learned
banks of knowledge.
One of the 21st Century skills that the State of Ohio and many other states have incorporated into
policy is presentational skill development for students at all grade levels. By assigning an authentic
language task such as a restaurant scene in a foreign language, students not only develop mastery of
vocabulary and language acquisition, but they also develop a secondary highly value added skill of
presenting before an audience. I commend these 8th graders who are facing stage fright in a second
language. They will grow stronger in their abilities in Spanish as well as in speaking before others.
This final 4th quarter will include sports, weather, professions, household and other vocabulary,
direct/indirect objects and respective pronouns, comparisons and diminutives and more. A 3 day final
exam the last weeks of May, will encompass all that we have studied, practiced and learned this year
since August. Please speak seriously with your son/daughter about the rigor and intensity of final
exam as this may be their first of many that will be a part of their academic future. We will undergo a
review of much of the material but independent study of vocabulary and verb meanings must be
undertaken by students outside of class. The websites provided to students and parents at
conferences and Open House are quite valuable for students to use to hone their language and
vocabulary skills and I strongly recommend weekly visits for all students. They are: quia.com;
spanish.spanish.com; studyspanish.com; classzone.com; conjuguemos.com. Each website offers a
variety of options to help develop various language skills.
I have given students study guides by which they can practice and study. Please chat with your
son/daughter about the intensity of a comprehensive final exam. It may be the first time s/he has had
one.
Thank you!
Mr. Corrigan
