Here is a few quotes from Cardinal Charles Maung SDB at the conclusion of the International Eucharistic Congress in 2016. “The Eucharist is the spiritual jewel of the Christian tradition. The mystery of the Eucharist has two facets: Presence and Mission. In the Eucharist we recognize and celebrate the true presence of the ris- en Lord. In the Eucharist we celebrate the saving mission of that same Lord who through the paschal mystery liberated the Israelites from slav- ery and who extends to the whole of humanity the gift of redemption and salvation. Indeed, this celebration of the Eucharist proclaims powerfully that the work of liberation and redemption is not yet over. Again and again, we celebrate this most holy sacrament of the Lord’s body and blood and are personally nourished by it in an intense faith encounter with Jesus, but this encounter does not happen in isolation; it needs oth- ers—the community. As she contemplated this mystery of presence, both in the celebration of Eucharist and in eucharistic adoration, Mother Tere- sa recognized that “Every Holy Communion fills us with Jesus and we must go in haste to give him to others.” Participation in the Eucharistic celebration and in Eucharistic ado- ration may make us good devottees. But being a devotee is easy. Christ is calling us to be disciples, to carry his cross; the Mass of the devotee ends in an hour; the Mass of the disciples is never finished. The devo- tee’s Eucharist is confined to the clean, decorated altars of the church; the disciple’s Eucharist continues with the streets as the altar. Christ died in the street; he was dragged through the streets, he proclaimed his good news on the street; he affirmed the dignity of human beings in the streets. His altar was the world: he broke the bread of healing; he broke the bread of feeding; he broke the bread of reconciling; he broke the bread of good news. His disiciples carried this task forward. That very act of gathering as a Eucharistic assembly was revoluntary we know from the Acts of the Aposltes. Indeed, the first disciples were martyred for the act of coming together and breaking the bread. Just months before his death, John Paul II wrote: “The Eucharist gives the impulse to the community for the practical commitment to build- ing a more just and fraternal society. Dear friends,

The Code of Canon Law 528 #2 states “The pastor is to see to it that the Most Holy Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly of the faithful.” What then does a Eucharistic community look like? You must ask God to give you power to fight against the sin of pride which is your greatest enemy – the

root of all that is evil, and the failure of all that is good. For God resists the proud.

First Reading Sir 15:15-20

A reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus

If you wish, you can keep the commandments,

to behave faithfully is within your power.

He has set fire and water before you;

put out your hand to whichever you prefer.

Man has life and death before him;

whichever a men likes better will be given him. For vast is the wisdom of the Lord;

he is almighty and all-seeing.

His eyes are on those who fear him,

he notes every action of man.

He never commanded anyone to be godless, he has given no one permission to sin.

The Word of the Lord

Second Reading 1 Cor 2:6-10 A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corin-thians

We have a wisdom to offer those who have reached ma-

turity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less

of the masters of our age, which are coming to their

end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for

our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that

none of the masters of this age have ever known, or

they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we

teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has

seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him.

These are the very things that God has revealed to us

through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depths of

everything, even the depths of God. The Word of the Lord

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the

kingdom.

Alleluia!

Gospel (Shorter form)

Mt 5:20-22. 27-28. 33-34. 37 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mat-

thew

Jesus said to his disciples: I tell you, if your virtue

goes no deeper than that of the scribes

and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors:

You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must

answer for it before the court. But I say this to you:

anyone who is angry with his brother will answer

for it before the court. ’You have learnt how it was said: You must not

commit adultery. But I say this to you: if a man

looks at a woman lustfully, he has already commit-

ted adultery with her in his heart.

‘Again, you have learnt how it was said to our an-cestors: You must not break your oath, but must

fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you:

do not swear at all. All you need say is “Yes” if you

mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more

than this comes from the evil one.’ The Gospel of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm

(R.) Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord!

1. They are happy whose life is blameless,

who follow God’s law! They are happy those who do his will,

seeking him with all their hearts. (R.)

2. You have laid down your precepts

to be obeyed with care.

May my footsteps be firm

to obey your statutes. (R.)

3. Bless your servant and I shall live

and obey your word.

Open my eyes that I may consider

the wonders of your law. (R.)

4. Teach me the demands of your statutes and I will keep them to the end.

Train me to observe your law,

to keep it with my heart. (R.)
