The Liturgies of Holy Week

Continued on p. 4

Throughout the Lenten season, the Church has prepared us for the sacred experience of Holy Week. Not only do we see the Holy of Holies but we are asked to participate in the most sublime drama of history. The Regina Coeli Report presents a tableau of im-ages of the ceremonies of the Sacred Triduum, the final three days of Holy Week, observed throughout the U.S. District.

Dear Faithful,

I have received confirmation that at the end of my six-year term I will be trans-ferred on August 15, 2014. I will then leave the U.S. District and take a new as-signment at the General House in Menzingen, Switzerland. Fr. Jürgen Wegner is assigned as District Superior of the United States. Fr. Wegner was ordained in 1991. He was Superior of the District of Belgium and the Netherlands for nine years, and these past six years he has been District Superior of Canada. During this time I have had the opportunity to work with him, and I have appreciated very much his love of the Society of Saint Pius X, his priestly spirit, his professionalism in handling projects in common, and his friendship. I have no doubt that he will continue the work done by my predecessors and myself for the expansion and the sanctification of the United States District.

I trust that you will welcome your new District Superior as well as you received me six years ago. For myself, assigned to the General House, I have been en-trusted to manage, develop and unify communications within the Society. It was a great honor and pleasure to serve the priests and faithful of the United States, a service which I will continue to do until the end of my term. These past six years have been a wonderful experience for me. When I stepped into the United States District, I knew that it would be a challenge, simply because of the size of the country, the large number of priests and faithful, the number of schools, etc. I was very impressed from the start by the good dispositions of the priests and pa-rishioners, their enthusiasm and zeal to deepen in their lives and expand around them the reign of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It was also impressive to see the number of youths in our chapels and the generosity of so many large families.

The good number of ordinations in Winona has also allowed the District to grow and reach a better stability. There were sixty-four priests in the U.S. District in August 2008 when I arrived; there should be nearly a hundred priests this sum-mer. This has allowed the opening of five new priories (Denver, CO - Sanford, FL - Walton, KY - Chicago, IL and Nicholville, NY). I want to thank here Fr. Yves Le Roux, Rector of the Seminary, for his friendship and good collaboration. The excellent relationship between the Seminary and the District is so encourag-ing and fruitful for all.

The main effort during this period has been to strengthen the unity among the priests by regular visits of the priories, chapels, and schools, but also by organiz-ing priests’ meetings, especially for the priors: an annual meeting and visit to the District House. I am glad to see that today the District is very well united and that a great spirit reigns among the priests.

The second big objective over the past few years concerned our youth. In an attempt to improve the education of the youth, many efforts have been made, es-pecially to unify curriculum of our schools. Also, many more summer camps have been organized, thanks to the young priests.

The third major endeavor concerned the administration of the District. The United States District had grown so much over the years that structural adapta-tion was necessary. We were able to set standard policies and implement ac-counting and building procedures. It may seem of little importance, but in reality they are important tools that bring great support to the priests and participate in the growth of the apostolate.

I must thank all the priests and the brothers of the District for their good spirit and their close collaboration in making all these improvements possible, espe-cially Fr. Gerard Beck and Fr. Steven McDonald, the two District Assistants. I want also to express my gratitude to the lay people who have helped me at the District Office and in different Society locations; I have found in them great support and professional experience. I will leave behind many good friends for whom I will remain grateful and who will remain in my prayers.

We give thanks to God for these six years spent together, and we entrust our lives and the continued growth in sanctity of the District to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. That is the reason why I’m glad to renew the announcement of a Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima travelling to all our chapels throughout the District. It comes at a good time. Indeed, at the end of the Rosary Crusade, the Statue will depart from the District Headquarters and travel across the country. Your pastors will communicate to you the details of the visit of Our Lady of Fatima to your cha-pel. May this pilgrimage be an occasion to increase our devotion to the Blessed Mother and to make or renew the consecration of ourselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. You are and will always be in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

With my blessing, united in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, for Her triumph!

The year 2014 falls between two important commem-orations in Florida. The first is the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Florida in 1513 by Juan Ponce de Leon, the first European to set foot on what is now United States soil. He named the newly discovered country “Pascua Florida” (or “Flowered Easter”) because of the verdant landscape he discovered during Easter Week. As a Catholic Spaniard, his first act upon landing was to plant the Cross of Our Savior in the Florida sand and claim the land for God and Spain.

The second commemoration is the 450th anniversary of the establishment of the first permanent European settlement in North America accomplished under the leadership of Pedro Menendez. St. Augustine was found-ed in 1565, 42 years before Jamestown. On September 8th of that year, the expedition’s chaplain Fr. Francisco Lopez sanctified the occasion by offering the first Mass

de Dios in St. Augustine, FL. Standing at 208 feet,

on North American soil. Later that day, the first “Thanksgiving” feast took place, shared by Timucuan Indians and the Spanish.

The first Pascua Pilgrimage to St. Augustine in 2013 was organized to celebrate these two impor-tant anniversaries in a manner consistent with the Catholic heritage they represent. Starting from St. Thomas More Chapel in Sanford, FL near what is thought to be the location of the martyrdom of Fr. Luis Sanchez, the pilgrims walked and canoed 107 miles to the Nombre de Dios Mission in St. Augustine. There, 100 pilgrims had the privilege of visiting Nuestra Senora de la Leche (patroness of nursing mothers and women who want to conceive), the first Marian Shrine in the country, and of cel-ebrating Mass at the same spot where the Body of Christ first blessed this land with its Presence. The second pilgrimage took place in February 2014, and a third pilgrimage is planned for April 7-12, 2015.

The priests of the United States District met for one week, arriving February 24th at St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Winona. Within a few hours, the seminary was filled like a beehive and had double its usual occupancy. With great generosity, the semi-narians vacated their rooms for 80 visiting priests. Following a schedule of prayers, meals and recre-ational periods, priests and seminarians got to know one another. Lectures interspersed with times for reflection and discussion, periods of rest, and visits filled each day.

On Wednesday the customary and highly antici-pated hockey game took place. This physical test of endurance and teamwork to go usque ad finem (all the way to the end) kept everyone on the edge of his seat. With just two minutes to spare, the priests secured this year’s trophy in a 6-5 win decided by a penalty shot.

On Friday February 28th, with renewed enthu-siasm and courage, the priests flew back to their missions and chapels, having been able once more to experience quam bonum et jucundum habitare fratres in unum! (how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!)

Confirmations in Carnegie, PAOn March 15th Bishop Bernard Tissier de

Mallerais conferred the sacrament of confirmation on 61 people at Our Lady of Fatima Chapel in Carnegie, PA near Pittsburgh. The little building was filled to capacity with family and friends to celebrate this momentous occasion.

“When the bishop gives you the sacrament he puts his hand on your head and signs your fore-head with the sign of the Cross, because that is our banner, the banner of the Christian. The banner of the Catholic is the Cross. So you receive the sign of the Cross on your forehead with holy oil, and the bishop says the words of confirmation. It is at this time that you receive the grace of the sacrament. When you return to your place you can say, “I have received the grace of the sacrament of confirmation. Now I am strong, strong to fight; now I am a sol-dier, a soldier of Jesus Christ.” Archbishop Lefebvre

New Seminary Project in Dillwyn, VA

Ordinations in Winona, MN

This past summer over fifty seminarians set off to work at the new seminary site in Dillwyn, VA. This crew was tasked with preparing as much of the thousand-acre property as could be done in just three months. Working in three groups they opened up beautiful views of the country through the dense for-est, and prepared land for an orchard to be planted early next year. Construction crews are currently working on the first phase of the building, consist-ing of the cloister and the administration buildings: everything but the seminary chapel.

April 26th was a special day at the new seminary site with a pontifical Mass at 9:30 a.m., complete with a sermon by His Excellency Bishop Fellay. Following this beautiful ceremony, there was a banquet for all attending. After the banquet His Excellency gave a conference, and then the seminarians gave tours of the construction site.

St. Michael the Archangel Church and School in Farmingville, NY

Planning for work to expand the parking lot, update the septic system, and erect a school building at St. Michael the Archangel Church and School in Farmingville, NY began early in 2008. But it was not until the purchase of 1.6 acres adjacent to the cha-pel that the proposed expansion got off the drawing board. Obtaining permits for all the work required was a challenge unexpectedly resolved when the men of St. Michael’s cleaned out the rectory attic and found an old metal wall locker containing needed property documents. At another critical time, a parishioner on pilgrimage placed the Church’s needs at the foot of Our Lady of Good Success, patroness of the school. Shortly thereafter, crucial approvals came through. Now that the necessary infrastructure is complete, the next step of the planned expansion will be a new school building.

Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Phoenix, AZ

On August 5th, 2013 the construction finally began. The school

opened its doors for its 5th year in the midst of costruction with

25 students. The parking lot and infrastructure (curbing, septic

system, underground utilities, irrigation and landscaping) were

completed the Monday before Thanksgiving.

miles away.

“The blessing of the bell tower cross will be a symbol of progress and hope, and a celebration of the achievements of our community,” stated Phoenix’s Mayor Gregg Stanton in his congratulatory letter for the Open House and Cross Raising Event held at Our Lady of Sorrows Retreat Center on February 22nd.

Special guests included Fr. Arnaud Rostand, U.S. District Superior, Fr. Patrick Rutledge, District Bursar, City Councilman Michael Nowakowski, and Councilwoman Kate Gallego.

The open house marked the end of Phase 2 in the continuing construction of the new church and included completion of the building’s exterior, bell tower, basement and parking lot. Phase 3 will include the completion of the interior: stained-glass windows, main altar, side altars, and the church’s bronze bells.

Maria Stella Maris Mission in San Pedro, CA

Maria Stella Maris Mission, located in San Pedro, CA (near Los Angeles), is a block or two from the ocean. The church was named by Archbishop Lefebvre and was previously the military chapel of Ft. MacArthur. In 2012 Fr. Charles Ward made arrange-ments for the renovation to Maria Stella Maris. These improvements include embellishments to the altar, a new roof, painting inside and out, new tile flooring, and pew refinishing. Mass is at 8:00 a.m. on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. During the week Mass is at 7:00 p.m.

“What is necessary is for the Catholics to be-gin to study the works of serious Catholic think-ers for guidance.” This is the purpose the author has in mind in writing about “Nineteenth-Century Catholics & the Myth of Modern Freedom,” the second title of this meaty book. It presents a step-by-step guide to the historical growth of the Catholic counterrevolutionary movement, as well as its connection with the temporal import of the Incarnation and Christendom. It fathoms the depth of ideas which oppose the Revolution, flanked by many a liberal, and the counterrevolu-tion of such Catholics as Luigi Taparelli and Louis Veuillot.

Here is a serious digging into the veins of modern un-civilization, victorious through the French Revolution, and virtually endorsed by such a “useful idiot” as the 19th century liberal. The liberal presumed that, by simply informing the world that he was the defender of freedom, progress and civilization, he had indeed become just that. This shallow thinker helped creating a free market of ideas in which no one is permitted to make definitive purchases. No wonder why he rashly convicted the Catholic counterrevolution-ary of intransigence.

True Catholic thought is intransigent in prin-

ciples because it believes; it is tolerant in practice because it loves. The true Catholic is not merely anti-revolutionary, reacting and crusading over petty details. He is counterrevolutionary, aiming at the wholesale return of the Christian Order.

For...“Western civilization grew up emphasiz-ing the existence of an objective order of nature, the importance of individual freedom within that order, and the need for individuals to be enlight-ened as to the character of nature and freedom through the guidance of authoritative societies like the family and the State.”

This is not a history of men or events. This is a history of ideas, of principles and of their ulti-mate social consequences. From Catholic light to Protestant and liberal darkness caused by the blindfold of pseudo “freedom,” “equality,” and “progress,” Dr. Rao leads us to the innermost guts of the monstrous zeitgeist—the Empire of the World—before offering us helpful means of sight recovery. It may not be wrong to assume that the author, on a par with Joseph de Maistre, Christopher Dawson and Hilaire Belloc, is less a historian than a worthy philosopher of history.

Rosary Crusade

Respond to the pressing call of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, our ultimate recourse in these troubled times. With less than 50 days to the end of the Rosary Crusade on Pentecost Sunday, the U.S. District has offered close to a million rosaries. We strongly encourage you to redouble your efforts in this important threefold cause:

• To implore from the Immaculate Heart of Mary a special protection for the traditional apostolate;

• For the return to Tradition within the Church;• For the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

by the consecration of Russia.

Bishop Fellay suggests means that we can add to the spiritual bouquet of rosaries to accomplish this goal:

• Prayer and penance as asked for at Fatima;• Sanctification through the duties of state;• Spirit of sacrifice in union with the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass.

Anyone can join the Rosary Crusade. You can pick up the monthly tally sheet in your chapel or print it directly from our web-site sspx.org. If you do not attend an SSPX chapel, you can still join the Rosary Crusade. Just print the tally sheet and mail it to the Regina Coeli House, 11485 N. Farley Rd., Platte City, MO 64079

Eucharistic Crusade

Monthly IntentionsMay: For the Spread of Devotion to the Immaculate of Heart of Mary

“A son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a man who is consumed with love and who sets on fire everything in his path. He is a man who unceasingly expends himself to light the fire of divine love in the world. Nothing stops him; he places his joy in privations, he undertakes all works for the glory of God; he embraces willingly every sacrifice, he is happy in the midst of calumnies; he exults in torments. He can think of but one thing — working, suffering, and seeking at all times the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls, to imitate Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

–St. Anthony Mary Claret

June: For Children Without FamiliesHail, O Virgin most pure and Queen most powerful, whom

the human family addresses with the sweetest name of Mother, we cannot call upon an earthly mother either because we have never known one or because we have been deprived very early of the support of a mother’s sweet care. Therefore we have recourse to thee, confident that thou wilt show thyself a Mother to us in particular. If our sad plight moves men’s hearts with sentiments of pity, compassion and love towards us, will not thy most tender heart be moved still more seeing as thou art the most loving, the most affectionate and the most merciful of all pure creatures.

O true Mother of all orphans, we take refuge in thy Immaculate Heart, certain to find therein all comfort and consolation for our lonely hearts. We place full confidence in thee trusting that thy maternal hand will guide and sustain us in the difficult journey through this life.

Bless all who assist us and protect us in Thy name; reward our benefactors and those noble souls who sacrifice their lives for us. But above all, be thou ever a Mother unto us, by molding our hearts, by enlightening our minds, by regulating our will, by adorning our souls with all virtue and by driving away those hostile to our welfare who would prefer to destroy us forever.

Finally, most loving Mother, our joy and our hope, lead us to Jesus, the blessed fruit of thy womb, so that if we lack the sweet tenderness of an earthly mother, we may become so much more worthy of thee in this life and in the eternal hereafter may rejoice in thy maternal affection and in thy company together with that of thy Divine Son Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. –Pope Pius XII

International Pilgrimages

Pilgrimage to Lourdes with SeminariansOctober 17-27, 2014

This fall seminarians of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary will again accompany the faithful on a 10-day pilgrimage in northern Italy and southern France. Visit the healing baths of Lourdes, the basilica of St. Anthony in Padua, the majestic apparition site of Our Lady nestled in the Alps, the papal palace in Avignon and more. On each of the 3 days in Lourdes, a Pontifical Mass will be celebrated in the St. Pius X basilica, served by the seminarians from our seminaries of Zaitzkofen (Germany), Econe (Switzer-land) and Winona (USA).

Visit shrine and healing baths in Lourdes. A nurse will accom-pany the pilgrims, so all sick, elderly, and handicapped are espe-cially encouraged to come. Depart from Minneapolis.
