Membership

• From March 2012 Membership Report• Long term trends are on following pages

• Professional Membership: 1940 • Increase of 72 since last RSAC (Jan 2012). Slightly up from last year• Rocky Mtn Section exceeded 1000 members for first time • All Sections, except for Twin Cities, show slight up trend since last year

• Student Membership: 604• Decrease of 21 since last RSAC (Jan 2012) • Most sections are down. Rocky Mtn shows continuing significant increase• Numbers for Feb 2012 show a sharp spike up for one month only

• Educator Associate Membership: 320• Increase of 4 since last RSAC (Jan 2012)• Most Sections show flat trend

Professional Membership Observations• Region V membership has been trending flat from 2000 to 2008, followed by a

slight decrease; the up trend which started last year appears to be continuing into 2012

• Rocky Mtn exceeded 1000 members for first time• Short term trends over the past six months:

• Iowa + 2• Rocky Mountain + 26• St. Louis + 9• Twin Cities - 6• Wichita + 3

• Long term trends: • Regional membership has slight uptick from downturn in 2008

– Iowa, St. Louis, Rocky Mtn show a reasonable up tick since last year– Wichita showing steady membership– Twin Cities appears to be giving up some of the increase seen in the Fall

• Continuing focus on calling “drop”, “new” and “transfer” members• Sections not fond of having dedicated membership drives, prefer to

concentrate on associating good meetings with new members

Student & Educator Member Observations

• Region V Student membership continuing Upward Trend• The Monthly Report for Feb 2012 shows unusual single month up spike

for Student membership; not seen in Professional or EA • Educator Associate membership continuing Upward Trend over past year• Significant variation in number of student members over the year• Past Year trends: Students Educators

• Iowa - 17 + 5• Rocky Mountain + 68 + 72• St. Louis - 25 + 6• Twin Cities + 2 + 3• Wichita - 48 + 4

• Student Long term trends: • Regional membership tending to for up trend for the past few years• Rocky Mtn show consistent increase with an increased growth rate since 2009• Wichita showing marked Student Member decrease over past year

• Educator Long term trends: • Increasing since renewals no longer required

Financial Summary 2011/2012 Student Paper Conference

• SPC 2011 - The report has not been submitted & do not anticipate a report to be provided

• On 2 April balance of $2,511.98 has been returned to Region V

• SPC-2012 - Draft report has been submitted

• Small Surplus expected depending on donation from the Boeing Co.

• Surplus will be refunded to Region V when final balance is determined

– Rocky Mountain and St Louis had provided donations to SPC but due to surplus funds donations were returned to the two sections

• Supported Wichita Council of Engineering Societies Annual Banquet

• DL Speaker 5 April “Innovation is No Vacation” was co-sponsored with the Student Section

• Supported meeting on Automation in Manufacturing at the National Center for Aviation Training week of 9 April

• Design/Build/Fly (DBF Competition Fly-off13-15 April : Tornado 1 / Students 0

– Everything started out fine with teams flying on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. All teams that were ready had an opportunity to fly twice. Then a tornado hit about ¼ mile from the competition. Luckily there was no damage to equipment. However the roads to the airfield were closed the rest of Saturday and Sunday. Teams were eventually able to get back in to pick up their equipment but the competition was over. A situation like this has never occurred before. The judges had to decide how to proceed. A first, second and third place winner were chosen.

• Number of Students was 50% more than expected

• There were 50 papers and 48 oral presentations

• Surplus of $810.90 (assuming $1,000 sponsorship from Boeing) therefore returning $750 to St Louis Section
