REGIONE LAZIO

The civilizations and people who inhabited Lazio contributed with their achieve-ments and ingenuity to create the greatness of Roman civilization and, as in anatural process of osmosis, were in turn permeated by it. The power, wealth andpolitics of Rome lived also outside the City, and bestowed honour and prestige tothe people and places Rome was an integral part of.Of these places and these people not enough has been said. The Regione Lazio has deemed it particularly useful and enjoyable to recall, through a simple publication, how the grandeur of Mediterranean civilizationthat arrived from the sea, landing on the coast of our region - Lazio - has alwaysmaintained a relationship of enriching exchange with the sea.“Surprising Lazio! - Where History meets the Sea” aims at divulging history andinformation regarding Lazio off the beaten track, those places in which historymeets the sea and that preserve their traditions and some of the most preciousarcheological treasures in the world, an authentic heritage of humanity too oftenovershadowed by the magnificence of the Capital. The intent of promoting knowledge of the refinement and wealth of the mostimportant places on the coast of Lazio led to the idea of accompanying touristsand visitors to all those places that to this day evoke the very origin of our cultu-ral history, through the visit not only of spectacular archeological sites, but also ofthe most famous seaside resorts, in a brief journey through the local traditions ofthe present and the fascination of the past.

The ruins of one of the largestand most powerful Etruscancity-states stand on a vast lime-stone platform on the banks ofthe river Fiora. FRANÇOIS TOMB

The area of the necropoli, around the city, preserves thou-sands of tombs of different types:case, chamber, corridor, as wellas graves and tumuli. Access tothe precious tomb (in the area ofPonte Rotto) from the C4 BC isgained through a 27mt-long cor-

ridor and contains frescoes, mostly preserved in Villa Albaniin Rome, representing the sagaof the Vibenna brothers and ofServius Tullius, at the time of thestruggle against the Tarquins forthe control of Rome.

TOMB OF THE INSCRIPTIONS

Dating from the C4 BC, it con-tains numerous inscriptions onthe walls and on the large slabson the doors leading to the vari-ous chambers.

TUMULUS OF THE CUCCUMELLA

Also located in the area of PonteRotto, the imposing tumulus ofthe Cuccumella measures 18mtin height and 65mt in diameter.

A stronghold of Etruscan ori-gin, it reached its peak in theC7- 6 BC as a city dependanton the city-state of Vulci. Thenecropoli, located on the hillyaround the modern city ofCastro, provide the only proofof the existence of the ancientsettlement (perhaps known asStatonia) of which no trace isleft as its original structureswere razed to the ground in1649 by order of PopeInnocent X. The numeroustombs, that for centuries pre-served unimaginable treasures, are worth a visit.

VILLA OF THE TAURINE BATHS

Significant ruins of the RomanTown of Centumcellae that grewby the large Port built by theEmperor Trajan in 106 AD, havesurvived in the port area and inthe outskirts of the modern town.We know that Centumcellae wasan important commercial centre, especially in Roman imperialtimes and during the decline ofthe empire it remained a point of

reference for the commercial andsocial life of the region. The area of the Taurine Baths, north of the Roman town, con-sists of a structure from the C1BC extending over about 2hectares. This imposing bathcomplex is the most representativeof the Roman civilization insouthern Etruria, and was rebuiltby Trajan and enlarged byHadrian by exploiting the sulphursprings. The presence of “double”rooms indicates the intense use of

the villa and the baths, document-ed until the end of the C5 AD.We recognize the most ancientpart by the technique used tobuild the walls, the opus almostreticulatum, with the decorativearrangement in a diamond pat-tern of the cubilia (wedge-shapedtufa blocks) visible in the rectan-gular portico framed by columns. The more imposing section datesfrom imperial times and is inbrickwork (opus latericium).Corridors and small service cham-

Following the decline ofthe city and the sack led byDionysious of Siracuse (384BC), the sanctuary was aban-doned and then confiscated bythe Romans who in the courseof the C3 BC built the castrumof the Roman colony over it.

ROMAN BRIDGES

The territory of SantaMarinella preserves numerousruins of Roman bridges on the

ancient course of the ViaAurelia, built in 241 BC, at thetime of censor C. AurelioCotta, to permit the Romanconquest of Etruria, Liguria, and the Gallic tribes of thenorth. The structure of thebridges proves the high levelreached by Roman civil engi-neering, as can be seen at km59.700, near the Fosso diCastesecco between the ViaAurelia and the sea, where wefind the Bridge of Apollo, withthree arches and a curvilinearstructure. In the vicinity, wecan also see the Bridge ofLargo Impero (remains of thearches) and in a palm grove, arches of the Bridge of ViaRoma, all dating from the laterepublican period.

The main attraction of the ruinsis the entire area north of theDecumanus, including theSquare of the Guilds and theTheatre that together provideextraordinary evidence of the

commercial life of Ostia andRome in the imperial era.The joint project dates to theAugustan period and the Theatre- attributed to Agrippa, ministerof the emperor at the time andwho died in 12 BC - is a veryancient building entirely rebuiltin brickwork in the C2 AD andrestored numerous times. Its pres-ent capacity is of 2700 seats andit is still fit for use, with theorchestra, the cavea, the servicecorridors and the portico withthe tabernae alternating withsteps to reach the tiers of seats. The Square of the Guilds, behind the Theatre, originallyconsisted of a simple structure: anenormous square (107x78m) - ofwhich the magnificent mosaic

floor has survived - with an exter-nal wall and a covered corridor.Only later, at the time of Cladius, was the site enriched by a porticoand raised with a second level tohouse the seats of the collegia, theguilds that led their commercethere. The temple at the centre ofthe square was erected on a podi-um at the time of Domitianamong gardens and open spacesadorned with statues.

The first settlements date tothe Bronze Age and in the IronAge two villages occupied theacropolis. The city acquired acertain power only in theC7BC, when it became capitalof the Rutuli - a people distinctfrom the Latins but part of theLeague of the Alban people -and it developed its architec-ture. The acropolis used tocontain many structures andstill houses a magnificentexample of Roman basilicawhich appears as a rectangularhall (45.80x23.80mt) facingthe area of the forum with six-teen entrances divided bypilasters, and a portico withcolumns on the eastern sidethat provided access to thetemple. Built in the late C2BC, the basilica shows evidenceof restructuring in theRepublican era as indicated bythe opus reticulatum tech-nique.

This coastal area ofSouthern Lazio, caught between landand countryside, maintains its manu-facture of straw bas-kets. In differentshapes but also traditional, theyhave always accompanied dailydomestic activities.

“Puntarelle”, thetender part ofCatalonian chicoryshoots are especially tasty and fra-grant in this area and are seasonedwith a homogenous dressing madewith salted anchovies (withoutbones), garlic, extra virgin oliveoil, vinegar, salt and black pepper.

Ardea: the ManzùCollection. The museumhouses the works the artistdonated to the ItalianState in 1979. Sculptures, medals, jewels and etchings for atotal of 400 pieces that documentthe artistic development of thegreat sculptor who chose Ardea ashis city of adoption.

If we wish to taste a winefrom the area we can choosethe DOC Colli Lanuvini, culti-vated and produced in the south-west area of the Albani Hills. It’s agood dry white wine, ideal withdelicate vegetable dishes or fish, and the Amabile type goes wellwith local baked sweets. TheSuperiore (12°) is excellent.

We enter the heart of Lower Lazio where marine life seems distant from the rural area. The Mediterranean charms us

with its sounds and colurs and reveals the stories of its origins, caught between history and myth.

As most sea towns, Anzio andNettuno have a lively and fascina-ting history. Their prehistoric ori-gins and their splendour in impe-rial times have left fine archeologi-cal treasures; commerce and theinfluence of ruling noble familiesthrough the ages contributed in for-ming the civilizations of these places

and their inhabitants.Parks and marine reserves awaitthose who wish to indulge in a rela-xing trip, and those in search of thepleasures of the palate will enjoylocal products of very high quality.

This important city represents ahighpoint of the Latin civiliza-tion, it reached the height of itssplendour in the C6 BC when itowned its own fleet and control-led sea commerce in the area. Yetat that time ancient Lazio startedundergoing social, economic andgeographical changes followingthe dispute between Latins andRomans and the constant threatof the neighbouring Volsci Constantly at war with Rome, it

According toLatin tradition,

the present name ofthe town originatedfrom Neptunium orNavale Antium, refer-

Woodworkis a typicalcraft inLazio, butthe province of Latina specializesin the creation of rustic furnitureand stuffed chairs.

Fresh vegetables and saladscan be enjoyed with thetraditional “pinzimonio”, a simpleyet ancient seasoning made with oil, salt and pepper. But lets not forgetthe sea: a large variety of fish can beprepared according to the fisherme-n’s own recipes, such as their highlyrecommended stewed octopus andpasta with sardines.

In the interior, between Apriliaand Anzio, there is a significantcultivation of Trebbiano, Sangioveseand Merlot. imperial times an artificial portwas built near the villa and wecan still recognize two of its piersand its fish tanks. The villa wasalso serviced by an aqueduct thatwas used as a bridge to reach thenearby artificial island on whichthe residential structure extended.

TOWER

This medieval coastal fortress wasbuilt above the remains of thefish tanks of the villa of Astura, and was connected to the main-land by a brickwork bridge.Although earliest evidence datesfrom 1193, it seems that the firstconstruction was ordered by theCounts of Tuscolo, lords ofNettuno, who to protect theirrich maritime centre from theconstant raids of the Saracenpirates (C9 - C10 AD).

In Borgo Mondello, near Le Ferriere, typicalshops offer craftmadeobjects in wroughtiron, inspired by tradi-tional design.

This is the area ofdairies that dailyproduce fresh moz-zarella, butter and other freshcheese products. Kiwi and oil arealso produced here. The sea offersexceptionally fresh products forfish soup and fish-fries in the clas-sic maritime tradition.

Oasis of Ninfa: an immense, flourishinggarden created in the 1920s among theremains of the medieval town of Ninfaby the heirs of the Caetani family whohad bought the town in the 1200s.Today the Oasis is managed by the“Roffredo Caetani di Sermoneta”Foundation that is also in charge of theruins of Ninfa and of protecting thelocal fauna. The little lake and the

homonymous river createthe setting for rare botani-cal specimen, fish, such as the macro-stigina trout and beautiful species ofbirds, such as the peregrine hawk, theAfrican golden oriole and the bluerock thrush, that populate the over1850 hectares of park with its woodsof bamboo, Mexican pines andJapanese magnolias.

If we are looking for shopwindows and brightlights, this is definitelythe wrong place! Along the ViaAstura and the SS. LungomarePontino we may rather meet far-mers selling local, often organicproducts: mozzarella, strawber-ries, wine and excellent beef.

The remains of the ancientcity were discovered in 1896by the French scholar Henri Graillot.Since then periods of interest on thepart of the Italian authorities have alter-nated with periods of inactivity. In the1970s, thanks to excavations led by theDutch Institute of Rome, many ruinsand secrets of the ancient civilizationhave been brought to light.

Rural and maritime traditions, a spa park and a marine oasispromontories and beaches, a medieval town and Roman ruins: this is

the double identity of Minturno, contained in a single history. We are in Lower Lazio where, caught between the sea and the hills, two cities share the fame and gloryderiving from the wealth of thearcheological remains and the state-liness of the medieval town. Inbetween the Promontori d’Oro andd’Argento, the ancient goldenGarigliano and beaches immersed in

the natural oasis, we will discover anarea rich in history. The very ancientRoman and Aurunci origins, thedomination of the Lombards,Saracens and later of the Normans, followed by the struggle for poweramong noble families (Caetani,Colonna, Carafa) lasting until1806, are evidence of the strategicimportance and wealth of the area.

was the construction of theAppian Way that made com-merce flourish and brought fulldevelopment. A Roman colony

by 296 BC, Minturno reachedthe height of its splendour inthe C2 BC, as indicated by thepresence of temples, porticoes, baths, the macellum, a theatreand an amphitheatre within thecircuit of the city walls in opusquadratum. A colony with alively commercial and sociallife, with an agricultural areacloser to the hills and a residen-tial section along the coast, inthe vicinity of the port andshipyards.
