Steven A. Hammond co-chairs the International Practice at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP from its head office in New York. He specializes in international arbitration and litigation, and advises multinational enterprises in connection with a broad range of commercial activity. Mr. Hammond has served as lead counsel or arbitrator in numerous ICC, ICSID, AAA and ad hoc international commercial arbitrations, including proceedings conducted in English, Spanish and French, and involving, inter alia, acquisition, construction, finance, insurance, investor, manufacturing, and shareholder agreements. He is also experienced in enforcing foreign arbitral awards and judgments, including awards against sovereign entities.

Mr. Hammond’s extensive transnational litigation and arbitration experience includes the defense of: a ship classification company in connection with sovereign claims in excess of US1$ billion for oil pollution damage; European corporate defendants in international antitrust proceedings; Saudi international in connection with litigation arising out of refurbishment of a wide-body jet; representation of Turkish-state oil enterprise; Latin American and African central banks in commercial disputes; and a multinational oil company in sensitive payments litigation.

Mr. Hammond is an honors graduate of Bowdoin College and Maine Law School, and received his LLM, magna cum laude, in International and Comparative Law from the Free University of Brussels. He is a president d’honneur of the Union Internationale des Avocats, and a recipient of the Medalla de la Federación Interamericana de Abogados.

Mr Hammond lectures widely on issues related to international arbitration and transnational litigation. His published work has appeared, inter alia, in The Journal of International Arbitration, A Revista de Arbitragem e Mediação, and Dispute Resolution International.

Edward gained his initial experience working for a civil and structural engineering consultancy and a major contractor.

Edward’s extensive knowledge of both the design and construction processes is added to by his wide experience in all methods of construction dispute resolution.

Recently Edward has become known as a leading expert on the legal obligations of procuring work, including the EU requirements. Edward is a guest lecturer at Queens University, Belfast, an observer at UNCITRAL Working Group II on International Commercial Arbitration and the Treasurer of the Adjudication Society. With a clear understanding of client’s needs Edward uses all his skills and tenacity to get results, quickly. *Holds the degree of barrister but does not hold a practising certificate from and is not fully regulated by the Bar Standards Board and cannot appear as a barrister in court. The BSB can consider a complaint but cannot require a payment of compensation.

Experience:

Richard Stephenson is a Project Manager with 40 years experience in the industry; having had involvement with a wide variety of complex major building and civil engineering projects and having operated in senior management roles in both contracting and consultant organisations. His experience spans developments in most sectors.

Commencing his career with a degree in Civil and Structural Engineering he gained membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1976. Although gaining initial experience carrying out an engineering function, he very soon realised that the management of projects was his future. He was awarded a distinction by the Business School, University of South Africa in his Diploma in Project Management in 1986.

Since these early times, Richard has managed a variety of projects in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and the UK. He has been involved with such projects as the Tsing Ma Bridge Hong Kong, Midi Residential Development Malta and Greenwich Peninsula London – home to the world famous Millenium Dome.

As a Project Director Richard has been responsible for managing the successful completion of US $multi-million developments demanding a broad technical understanding of all engineering and design detail associated with complex projects; with overall responsibility for time, cost, quality and safety. His ability to anticipate and resolve potential problems through flexibility of management has been highly valued by many organisations.

Experience:

Michael has over 20 years in the property sector, with a background in urban planning, property development and finance. His technical background includes the feasibility, planning, design and implementation of major property and infrastructure sector projects of regional and national significance throughout the UK, Australia, Asia and the Middle East. He has held Board level and Senior Directorial roles on major successful projects throughout the Middle East, UK, Asia and Australia regions.

The type and scale of projects on which Michael has been engaged range from major property development and urban regeneration projects, such as London Docklands (UK), Newham High Street (UK) and the Oxford Street improvements in London to major Regional projects such as Bahrain Bay (Bahrain), Lusail (Qatar), the Reem Island Development (Abu Dhabi) and major regional strategic studies such as the Bahrain Transport Model and Strategic Masterplan, and a National Economic Strategy for the Libya National Economic Development Board.

As a developer, he directed the planning, design and delivery of a number of completed resort and residential developments within the Middle East region and UK, including a number of prestigious golf-course resorts and hotel developments.

Michael has undertaken extensive business case analysis for major property development and infrastructure schemes, as well as deal structuring specialist transaction advice and management consultancy while a Director of one of the Big Four accounting firms in the Middle East region.

Graduated from Cairo University then obtained his Ph.D. (geotechnical engineering) from Sheffield University, England in 1978 then joined Ove Arup & Partners, London. In 1982 he was appointed project manager of the Kuwait Waterfront Project administered in accordance with the 2nd and 3rd editions of the FIDIC Red Book. In 1992 he joined Dar Al Handasah and performed tasks in Turkey, UK, Saudi Arabia, England, Algeria and Qatar. In 1994 he joined the Greater Cairo Metro Consultants and later worked with the Egyptian Resorts Co. and Sixth of October for Development & Investment Co.

In 1993 Dr. El-Haggan founded Contract Administration & Arbitration Bureau and in 1996 obtained the Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), London. He became a CEDR Accredited Mediator in May 2010.

Dr. EL-Haggan gave many lectures and presentations with FIDIC and ICC/FIDIC conferences. Sherif acted as arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator in numerous commercial & construction cases.Sherif conducted numerous programmes on “FIDIC Forms, Claims, Disputes & Arbitration” in Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Tunis, Morocco and Turkey. He teaches “Construction Project Administration & Claims Avoidance” with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Dr. Sherif EL-Haggan designed the programme known as CLAC (Contractual & Legal Aspects in the Construction Industry, Construction Law). CLAC is the only comprehensive programme of its type in the Middle East. It commenced in 2002 and achieved great success with participants including engineers & lawyers.
