After rolling out more than 30,000 home property marking kits as part of Operation Spearhead in 2018/19, Surrey Police continue to make residential burglary a priority.

Among the recent crime trends highlighted in the county are Asian Gold burglaries, which are also recognised as a national problem. These crimes cause a great deal of suffering and economic harm to families as the stolen jewellery may represent both life-savings and also irreplaceable heirlooms.

North Surrey Police Division (which covers Elmbridge, Runnymede and Spelthorne boroughs) allocated additional resources to the problem, including both overt patrols and proactive covert work. This includes working and sharing information on a regional level with neighbouring forces which have also experienced crimes such as Thames Valley and the Metropolitan Police.

In North Surrey, any victim who has been burgled is offered expert advice from police Designing Out Crime Officers. Officers have also distributed SelectaDNA home marking kits to neighbourhoods with historically higher risk of residential burglary. Over 1,000 kits have been distributed in Runnymede alone. Police have also distributed leaflets in several Indian languages giving advice to mitigate the threat of burglary.

Spelthorne Police have also launched residential burglary schemes recently, distributing home kits to neighbourhoods including Sunbury and erecting deterrent signs on lamp posts to warn thieves that SelectaDNA is in use in the area.

Convicted: Prolific Burglar Jailed For 8 Years A prolific burglar has been jailed for eight years after being linked to some of his crimes by Secure Asset Register.

Billy Hodge was convicted of 27 theft and burglary offences including the theft of garden machinery and tools valued at around £6,000 from a private school in Surrey.

Surrey Police later recovered the tools while conducting a search at Hodge’s home address. They were able to trace them back to the school after tamper-proof TESA labels used on the equipment led police to run a check on our Secure Asset Register (SAR).

SAR allows police and members of the public to register valuables to an online account, using unique identifying marks such as serial numbers.

PCSO Vicky Seymour from Surrey Police, said: “You assisted our case with a prolific burglar by providing owner details linked to a serial number on the recovered property. With your help, Billy Hodge was sentenced on 23 January 2020 to 8 years in prison for 27 burglary and theft offences in Surrey and Sussex. Thank you.”

New SelectaDNA Forensic Lab Launches In LondonSelectaDNA are pleased to announce completion of their new forensic science laboratory in London.

The lab was opened in December 2019 and features the very latest analysis equipment and highly trained personnel to allow quick and expert analysis of SelectaDNA sample submissions from police and government agencies around the world.

The ultimate and not too distant goal is to also provide SelectaDNA’s customers with a UKAS accredited ISO 17025 testing laboratory for DNA services – our first such accredited lab in the UK.

With professional and equally accredited partner labs also in the Netherlands, France, Germany and New Zealand, we have a global analysis footprint which will position SelectaDNA as the pre-eminent and most trusted forensic coding and crime prevention solution in the world.

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole national accreditation body for the UK. UKAS is recognised by the government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

ISO/IEC 17025 enables laboratories to demonstrate that they operate competently and generate valid results, thereby

promoting confidence in their work both nationally and around the world. It also helps facilitate cooperation between laboratories and other bodies by generating wider acceptance of results between countries. Test reports and certificates can be accepted from one country to another without the need for further testing, which, in turn, improves international trade.

Jason Brown, SelectaDNA’s Commercial Director, said: “It has taken a year of planning but the end result is truly impressive. This gives us unparalleled flexibility when it comes to handling and analysing police submissions, and of course extends our growing network of authorised SelectaDNA laboratories around the world, as we continue to invest in the forensic science side of what makes SelectaDNA so popular for our commercial and public sector clients.”

“Ultimately, it is about giving our customers the confidence they need in the analysis results we deliver. And with the Forensic Science Regulator’s new Codes of Practice and Conduct likely to become Statute in 2020, it means we can also stay one step ahead of our competition in ensuring that we, as forensic science practitioners, not only act with honesty, integrity, and objectivity, but that our forensic units only supply the very best services to the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and UK policing.”

Op Meteor Makes Stolen Goods Too Hot To HandleA crackdown to prevent burglaries and encourage people to protect their homes has been relaunched by Essex Police after a successful first run.

For added protection, local business owners are also being offered the chance to purchase SelectaDNA intruder sprays. These sprays are for commercial use and can be fitted to doorways, exit points and windows, and cover intruders with a forensically detectable liquid which shows up on suspects when they are arrested.

Chief Superintendent Ewen Wilson, Essex Police’s lead for burglary, said: “Our previous operational activity was a success and resulted in a significant decrease in burglary. This is testament to the fact that property marking, which is such a simple thing to do, can make a difference to our communities and make residents feel safer.”

Code-named Operation Meteor, the crackdown encourages people to mark their valuables to make them less attractive to thieves which in turn reduces burglary.

In June 2019, a property marking campaign, which included the use of SelectaDNA to encourage residents to protect their belongings, resulted in a 26% decrease in burglary across Essex.

Property marking is a proven deterrent to thieves, and it makes it harder for criminals to sell on stolen goods. The use of property marking products significantly increases the chance of convicting a suspect, with SelectaDNA having a 100% conviction rate.

A statement from Essex Police said: “As part of the operation, every item taken to second-hand shops will be checked for property marking and each suspect in custody will be scanned for traces of forensic marking liquids.”

Drive On Part In BBC Consumer ShowThe SelectaDNA Vehicle kit was recently featured on BBC1’s Rip Off Britain as part of a news item on the latest wave of ‘car cannibalism’, where parts such as catalytic converters (CATs), are stolen from people’s cars by masked thieves in broad daylight.

The film made suggestions for how members of the public can avoid CAT theft, such as installing CCTV and parking in a well-lit area. Our Police Liaison Officer, Nick Roach, was then shown applying the forensic marking to parts of a vehicle including the CAT.

Mark Silvester from West Midlands Police Crime Reduction Team was also interviewed and said: “Marking the parts of a vehicle could deter thieves because they are traceable back to that particular car.”

The Vehicle kit marks all types of cars and commercial vehicles including 4x4s, vans and classic cars. It is police approved and has been tested to the very highest industry standards, attaining PAS820 Grade A External and Thatcham Quality Assurance.

SelectaDNA Surge is a forensic liquid in a tailored pouch format for mounting inside ATMs to protect against gas attacks. The pouches are designed to burst during an ATM gas attack or any other explosive attack. The DNA taggant is designed to mark criminals and their vehicles with a unique UV solution which can be detected and analysed at a later date, thus linking criminals to the crime scene. The solution is used in conjunction with SelectaDNA warning signs to provide a proven and credible theft deterrent.

What is SelectaDNA ATM Surge?

Update: ATM Gas Attack Gang Jailed For Over 45 YearsFive men have been jailed for over 45 years after a series of cash machine explosion burglaries.

The sentences come after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers launched Operation Cass, an investigation into a spate of burglaries targeting ATMs across areas of the North West. The gang’s arrests were covered in our last newsletter (issue 24).

One of the sites targeted was a post office at Heaton Moor, Stockport. However, on this occasion, a hi-tech marking product called SelectaDNA Surge was activated, staining members of the gang with a unique DNA code that stayed on their clothing and allowed them to be later identified and linked to the crime by GMP.

The five men – all from the Stockport and Manchester areas – targeted 15 cash machines in Greater Manchester, as well as in other areas across Cheshire, Yorkshire and Wales.

Lewis Murkin, Philip Clarke, Ryan Wilson and Michael Cash used explosives to carry out the burglaries, while Martin Goldstraw’s role was to provide logistical support to the organised crime group by moving vehicles and equipment.

They each received a 10 year and 8 month sentence; except Goldstraw who received a 5 year and 4 month sentence.

Detective Sergeant Rick Castley, of GMP’s Serious and Organised Crime group, said: “During the investigation clothing seized from the offenders was found to contain SelectaDNA, which was subsequently linked to a specific premises and offence.”

“SelectaDNA evidence proved a significant part of the conspiratorial case against the offenders, which resulted in all five offenders pleading guilty to conspiracy to cause an explosion and conspiracy to commit burglary, which included 15 offences where over £420,000 was stolen.”

DS Castley concluded: “From attending the police station at short notice and providing a triage of exhibits; to providing phone advice and producing an evidential package, the service provided by Selectamark (which produces SelectaDNA) was exceptional.”

TAGGING SPRAY SUCCESS

DNA ‘Tagging’ Spray Gets Results: Arrests & ConvictionsThe same DNA spray technology that the Metropolitan Police has used successfully to drive down moped-enabled crime by 53% across the capital is also being deployed by other police forces across the UK.

The spray, which can only be deployed by specially trained police officers, is uniquely coded and, although it can’t be seen with the naked eye, fluoresces bright blue under UV light. If suspects are arrested or bikes recovered, the spray can then link offenders to criminal activities.

Northumbria Police recently arrested an illegal biker, aged 20, after he was caught driving a suspected stolen motorcycle in Newcastle.

An officer sprayed the suspect, his bike and a pillion passenger. The offender was arrested later that day for an unrelated matter. Whilst in the police station he was placed under a UV light.

The presence of SelectaDNA spray was detected on the back of the suspect’s hands and was confirmed (in just a few hours) to be from the same spray canister deployed by the officer earlier that day in relation to the stolen motorcycle.

The suspect was interviewed and made no reply. However, the DNA Spray on his hands was enough to confirm his presence on the motorcycle as either rider or passenger. With this indisputable evidence against him, the offender pleaded guilty to driving a stolen bike, theft and driving while disqualified. He is currently awaiting sentencing.

Following West Yorkshire Police’s first use of the high tech ‘tagging’ spray, teenager Connor Walker was convicted and locked up for 33 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving in relation to an incident in which cars were attacked and he fled from police officers on a scooter.

Merseyside Police had previously secured two convictions for Connor Gibney and Isaac Senior using the spray.

Jack Green and Tarik Oliveira were sprayed with DNA tagging spray after committing phone snatches on a moped and engaging police in a high-speed pursuit across London. They were each sentenced to over two years in prison.

Abderrahman Hassan and Spencer Duarte were identified and convicted in separate incidents in London. Both offenders were given jail sentences for their crimes. Hassan received 18 weeks and Duarte four years.

Another moped offender to fall foul of the Metropolitan Police is Mohammad Khaleghi, who was sprayed with DNA tagging spray as he rode his moped dangerously in London. He was jailed for 10 months.

Nuisance biker Declan Drummond was riding a stolen dirt bike in Darlington, when he was sprayed with the tagging spray by Durham Constabulary. He was arrested by officers later that day, who found the spray on his bike and clothing.

A moped rider initially stopped, then made off from Essex Police during a chase. He was sprayed by police who then went to his home address and found the bike but the rider had fled. Later that night he got in touch, presumably as police had seized the bike, and he was reported for driving without a licence, no insurance, failing to stop and careless driving. The DNA spray on his face meant he couldn’t claim it wasn’t him, and he accepted full responsibility.

Over half of the UK’s police forces are now using DNA Tagging and Defence Spray technology.

One of the latest forces to start using the Defence Spray is Lancashire Police which is clamping down on illegal bikers in Skelmersdale who have been driving dangerously past members of the public on pavements and across open spaces on unlicensed off-road motorcycles.

West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership provided the funding for the spray. Chair Heidi McDougall said:

“The partnership is very pleased to be able to give funding support to help this new campaign to crackdown on this activity and protect communities, ensuring parents and children can enjoy public spaces without fear of injury.”

Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw added: “This is a real example of officers listening to residents’ concerns and taking steps to make their communities safer.”

SelectaDNA Tagging and Defence Sprays are offender marking sprays used to deter and detect personal attack and criminal behaviour such as robberies, smash and grabs, anti-social behaviour and shoplifting.

This proven technology has successfully convicted criminals by conclusively linking a suspect to a crime scene.

How does it work?

The spray unit works by tagging the offender with an invisible solution containing a unique synthetic DNA and UV markers that cling to skin and clothing for days, weeks or even months.

Each spray unit is registered to the user and location, creating a detailed evidence trail. Police use an ultraviolet light to locate marked areas, immediately linking the offender to a crime scene.

The invisible marking spray should be aimed at the suspect’s torso, with the intention of marking areas of the skin, clothing, footwear and the bike if they are riding one.

Please note: Essential training is required by all users to ensure the correct use of the Tagging and Defence Sprays.

Covert operations using SelectaDNA are now being undertaken to enhance the security of Australia’s Borders. Due to the highly sensitive nature of this project, we are unable to divulge specific details...

The latest Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) branch to be fitted with a SelectaDNA Intruder Spray System is a new concept store at Westfield Mall in Albany. The branch has the benefit of a five-head spray system covering the mall entry/exit as well as the road frontage ATM lobby. SelectaDNA Intruder Spray is being used in all 152 branches nationwide to deter robbery.

During a recent Safety Week organised by police and the local council in Dordrecht in the Netherlands, 100 owners of company cars and work vans were offered a car marking kit to protect their vehicles. The promotion was primarily aimed at mobile businesses that would not only lose their equipment, tools and possessions if their work vehicle was stolen, but also their source of income. By marking parts of a car or van with the kit, the vehicle becomes immediately less attractive to thieves, who then consider it too risky to sell-on.

A Dordrecht council spokesperson said: “Our city has become safer in recent years. The investments made by the municipality and partners have not been in vain. But we want to remain a safe and liveable city. That is why security partners are committed to continuing to tackle nuisances and to reduce criminal activities such as burglaries and thefts.”

...However, we are able to shout out about the success of the very first SelectaDNA Spray installation in Australia which was undertaken in 2011. The spray was fitted at the Yarraville Club, a popular sports bar and bistro in Victoria. The deterrent factor of the spray has been highly effective, with no incidents of theft or robbery reported in over 8 years. The latest annual service of the system has just been carried out and the club management team remain happy customers.

500th Church Takes Up Insurance OfferFive hundred churches have now taken up a special deal to purchase a SelectaDNA Church kit offered by Trinitas Church Insurance Services.

From taking care of residents on a housing estate in Glasgow, to protecting allotments in Surrey; and from guarding tools and cable for a building materials company headquartered in the

West Midlands, to looking after local businesses in Wales – these are all exciting, new SelectaDNA schemes that have just launched. We’ll let you know how they get on...

Churches are often targeted by thieves for valuable metals such as lead, copper and zinc. However, by marking roofs, gutters, downpipes and lightning conductors, as well as stone walling and paving, with forensic marking solutions, with our DNA kit the risk of theft is greatly reduced.

Each kit consists of an aerosol containing a unique forensic signature and uses warning signs to alert criminals that the property is protected. The kit marks up to 150 pieces of valuable metal with a unique lacquer that is inconspicuous and virtually impossible to remove.

“We are extremely proud to celebrate the landmark of protecting our 500th church with SelectaDNA! Thank you to all the team at Trinitas Church Insurance Services and especially Leigh Ide for his expert advice and support. We look forward to protecting many other places of worship around the UK and reaching the next landmark.”

The historic St Mary’s Great Chart & Singleton, nr Ashford was the 500th church to be protected, a moment marked by James Brown, SelectaDNA’s Managing Director (pictured left), Derek Goodwin, Church Warden at St Mary’s (centre) and Leigh Ide, Trinitas Church Insurance Services (right).

SelectaDNA is listed in Chubb’s ‘Little Black Book’ which contains the names and numbers of a select group of companies that can help prevent and protect the possessions and homes of their clients from burglary and theft. We are the only company to be listed in the DNA Security Marking section of the book.

We are proud to have achieved Aviva’s Preferred Supplier Status for our forensic property marking kits. All Aviva Risk Management teams across the UK have now been trained in the use of the

SelectaDNA product range following a series of workshops led by our Managing Director, James Brown.

Approximately 100 surveyors and risk managers completed the training. They also had all their company laptops, phones and thermographic cameras marked with SelectaDNA and registered to our Secure Asset Register.

SelectaDNA’s distributor in the United States is proud to become an approved Milestone Systems’ Technology Partner, with a special focus on integrating SelectaDNA’s Intruder Spray with Milestone’s IP-based video management solutions.

The intruder spray can be remotely activated in numerous modes to reduce robbery and unauthorized access, including panic button, money clip, remote video monitoring, burglar alarms, access control and intrusion detection systems.

Henrik Friborg Jacobsen, co-founder of Milestone Systems, a global leader within open platform video management software

for IP network-based video surveillance, said: “I’m extremely impressed with the success and infinite capabilities of SelectaDNA forensic marking technology, which is now available in the US. Its ability to integrate with a plethora of security systems provides enhanced crime prevention outcomes for integrators and their clients. Video will no longer stand alone as evidence. Criminals now can also be tagged and linked directly to a specific crime scene. We are bringing game changing forensic marking technology into the US market. I am truly excited to be part of this journey.”

In response, Sussex Police has made rural crime a priority by introducing dedicated rural crime Police and Community Support Officers, who will be patrolling potential hot-spots in the countryside and helping farmers to mark their equipment, machinery and tools with SelectaDNA property marking.

The new rural crime team will also use their time to engage with residents, offering burglary prevention advice and reassurance, while providing a high-visibility deterrent to criminals.

While out on patrol, the team visited Ashdown Forest Centre in East Sussex which recently fell victim to a burglary.

Sergeant Tom Carter, Sussex Police operational lead for Wildlife, Heritage and Environmental Crime, said: “Unfortunately the Forest Centre has been a victim of burglary. We are here doing some basic principles around property crime prevention and property marking, talking about how to secure property, how to mark property so that it becomes identifiable and also how to use signs and visual deterrence to deter criminals from targeting the site.”

At Ashdown Forest, Mr Carter demonstrated property marking using a SelectaDNA marking kit. The kit, given to victims of crime, contains a bottle of fluid which can be painted on vulnerable equipment so that if it is ever stolen, police can identify the item with a unique DNA code on the SelectaDNA database. One pack can mark 50 items.

Michael Payne, an Ashdown Forest ranger, said the recent burglary restricted the team from working properly for at least a month. “Anything that can be done to help reduce rural crime and the problems that we are facing is really welcomed.”

New Team To Combat Rural CrimeRural communities are among the most vulnerable to theft.

Marks approximately 50 items and protects tools, equipment, gardening and agricultural machinery.
