On Wednesday, April 19th over 260
UCA members came out to Venuti’s
Ristorante & Banquets to kickoff the

Besides being a great networking
event for many UCA members, it was a
wonderful opportunity to network and
learn about upcoming work. Barrett Mur-
phy, City of Chicago Water Commis-
sioner was in attendance and gave a won-
derful presentation along with Lake
County Department of Transportation
and the Illinois State Geological Survey.
The Spring Showcase was also an
opportunity to introduce some of the
UCA Scholarship award winners to the
UCA community.
UCA Staff would like to personally
thank everyone who sponsored, present-
ed, exhibited & attended the Spring

The construction season is finally upon us!
Now we need the rain to stop so we can get our
crews fully back to work. Keep in mind that
there will be safety changes coming from
OSHA as you prepare your employees for the
season. The crane standard compliance date
goes into effect on November 10th, 2017 and
the silica standard compliance date is now Sep-
tember 23rd, 2017. UCA, along with member
firm, Optimum Safety Management, provided
members with a presentation on the new silica
standard in April. As you can see, there are
plenty of new standards for companies to com-
ply with so don’t wait to get started. The
presentation is posted on the UCA website, and
be sure to consult UCA’s safety and medical
providers for assistance in meeting the compli-
ance deadline.
UCA’s Corporate Health and Safety Manual,
located on the website (click on the Committee
Updates tab on the home page – Safety / Risk
Mgmt / Utility), is in the process of being up-
dated. UCA is working with new member firm,
Chief Safety Services, to update the program to
meet all of OSHA’s new requirements. The
update should be available for your use within
the next month.
At the Laborers’ Annual LECET Safety
Lunch, at the Homer Street facility, employees
of UCA member firms were in the running for
the new truck giveaway. Congratulations to all
the candidates and thanks for setting the exam-
ple in contributing to a safer work environ-
ment.
The Spring Showcase was held at Venuti’s in
Addison on April 19th. As always, the attend-
ance, facility, and food were great and compli-
mented the very informative educational ses-
sion. Those in attendance got to hear from the
Chicago Water Commissioner, Barrett Murphy,
Lake County DOT’s, Al Giertych, and the
State Geological Survey. Thank you to all of
the vendors that participated in the Showcase
and the sponsors for
their support. I want
to issue a special
thanks to UCA’s
staff and the Events
Committee for all
their hard work in
making the Show-
case a success!
Lastly, thanks to
those that took the
time to attend this annual event.
UCA members and Staff will be in DC the
week of May 15th for meetings with our na-
tional lobbyists, the Clean Water Construction
Coalition (CWCC), and also conducting visits
to the Illinois Congressional Delegation on the
Hill with the Transportation for IL Coalition
(TFIC). We will be advocating for investment
in the nations aging infrastructure. UCA has
also become an affiliate member of the US Wa-
ter Alliance, which is assisting in coordinating
“Infrastructure Week” activities the same week
at the nation’s capitol.
The next couple of months will be very busy
with the Safety Awards Luncheon, TCC Wash-
ington DC Fly-in, Continuing Education Open
house at ADS (June 2nd), and the Golf Outing.
Please do not forget to mark your calendars and
register for UCA’s Golf Outing at Cantigny on
June 22nd, if you are not a golfer (like me),
please consider meeting us for dinner at 6 p.m.
I hope to see many of you there.
As always, I wish you the best in the months to
come!
Sincerely,
Nick Neri
