Registration and Fundraising Guide Thank you for signing up for the 2020 Walk for the Animals! We can’t wait to have you join us in solidarity on Saturday, May 23rd, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for our collective online celebration to help the homeless and neglected animals of Durham County. Our goal is to raise $60,000 – and with your fundraising efforts, we will! #WalkWithMe2020 We know that in these uncertain and difficult times, making donations can feel difficult enough, let alone asking for donations from others. That can make fundraising on behalf of organizations we are passionate about particularly challenging. However, the important work at APS continues, even in times of crisis. Your support in raising funds for the care of the animals is needed now more than ever. With this in mind, this year we recommend a little extra dose of sensitivity in your fundraising efforts. Registration and Fundraising Guide

Thank you for signing up for the 2020 Walk for the Animals! We can’t wait to have you join us

in solidarity on Saturday, May 23rd, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for our collective online celebration

to help the homeless and neglected animals of Durham County. Our goal is to raise $60,000 –

and with your fundraising efforts, we will! #WalkWithMe2020

We know that in these uncertain and difficult times, making donations can feel difficult

enough, let alone asking for donations from others. That can make fundraising on behalf of

organizations we are passionate about particularly challenging. However, the important

work at APS continues, even in times of crisis. Your support in raising funds for the care of

the animals is needed now more than ever. With this in mind, this year we recommend a

little extra dose of sensitivity in your fundraising efforts. Think about your audience (your

friends, family, followers), what challenges they might currently be facing, and how your

messaging might make them feel. If you are struggling to come up with the right words or

images to use in your fundraising efforts, please look to APS communications for help. You

are more than welcome to share any and all Walk related graphics, social media posts, email

copy, or website copy. In addition, in this guide you will find several new and sensitive

example posts and emails to use (or use in part, or be inspired by).

This year, fundraising efforts are moving online, making it is easy and safe for you to still raise

much needed contributions for the Durham animals in need. This guide will help you navigate

your online fundraising profile, and offer online fundraising tips and ideas, too. The social

media portion of this guideline begins on page 8 – please check it out for important

information on how to fundraise through social media!

In addition to online fundraising, we also have a text to give options this year! Please promote

this option with your teams and when you post or email about the fundraiser. Participants and

donors can make a donation by texting keyword “Walk2020” plus the amount they’d like to

donate to 50155!

SOCAIL MEDIA TOOKIT

Since fundraising efforts are moving online this year, social media is going to play a huge part

in your fundraising success. First and foremost, we recommend posting on social media about

the Walk 1x per day, always using #WalkWithMe2020, making all of your posts public (so that

others can share them), and always tagging APS of Durham in your posts. Feel free to share

anything posted by APS. Again, we understand that fundraising can feel particularly difficult

this year, and recommend you use your best judgement in how often you post and what you

are sharing with your audience based on their sensitivities.

Read on for tips, tricks, blurbs, and pictures that will help you with your posts!

THE BASICS:

• Personalize your post – Even though we’ve provided the graphics and suggested text, feel free to tell YOUR

story. Your friends and family want to know why this makes a difference to YOU.

• Have you participated in Walk For The Animals in the past? Posting a picture or video of you going for a walk,

with or without your pet, in your Walk t-shirt is a simple way to get people excited about sharing our walks

online on May 23rd! • Always use #WalkWithMe2020 when posting on social media about the walk.

• Make sure to tag APS in all your Walk posts and we will share them on our social media as a post or a story.

SHORT AND SWEET POST EXAMPLES:

Include statements so that the person you ask for a donation will learn about the difference they will make in an

animal’s life. Empower them with that information so they will be more interested in donating. Donors want to know

that their contribution is going to a good cause.

Example:

WE can make a difference. YOUR contribution will make a difference.

RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE POST EXAMPLES:

APS works hard to benefit the Durham community. Sharing some examples of where we go above and beyond will

encourage and inspire people to donate. We’ve included a few real examples from fundraisers this year that are

sensitive to the current crisis. Copy and paste to use some of the examples below or share your own story.

Did you know that APS of Durham has set up a pet food pantry for residents of Durham who need help right now to keep

their pets at home? Animal welfare and human welfare are intertwined. Please use this link to donate: (link to your

fundraising page).

It’s a sensitive time and many are struggling. If you happen to be amongst those in a position to give, please support

Animal Protection Society of Durham. Our Walk for the Animals is continuing, albeit online and from a social distance.

Did you know that APS has a community spay/neuter program?

APS ensures that every animal they adopt out of the shelter receives a health and behavior assessment, vaccinations, a

microchip, and is spayed or neutered before going to their new home. Their full-time veterinary staff perform more than

1,600 surgeries per year, helping reduce the number of unwanted or abandoned animals in the community. They also

contract with local veterinary partners to provide a low or no cost option for community members to have their animals

spayed or neutered.

Have you heard about APS’s microchipping program?

Durham County Animal Services deputies use microchip scanners to identify lost animals and reunite them directly with

their owners. That’s why APS has instituted a program to microchip all dogs and cats who are redeemed by their owners

from our shelter. Additionally, they’ve donated microchips to owned animals in the community, ensuring fewer stray

animals experience stressful separations from their families.

Did you know APS is there to help, even after you adopt?

Their on-site behavior manager works closely with our adoptable animals to prepare them for adoption and fostering,

from socialization to car rides to learning manners around people and other animals. And their work with animal

behavior doesn’t end in the shelter. Their staff provides classes and even a “hotline” for community members to call in

with questions about behavior, feeding, and medical needs.

Did you know that some animals love music too?

The mental health of the animals in their care is vital to APS. Waiting for a new home can be stressful to a confused or

scared animal, so providing them with a clean, calm environment helps reduce tension and behavioral problems.

Whether it’s aromatherapy, specially-designed kennel, or even pet-friendly music, they help reduce tension in the

shelter through smart, animal-first programs.

Page 14: Registration and Fundraising Guide · 2020. 4. 24. · SOCAIL MEDIA TOOKIT Since fundraising efforts are moving online this year, social media is going to play a huge part in your

Have you heard about their stellar kitten foster program?

This program was created to provide critical 24-hour, life-saving care for nursing and orphaned kittens. They recruit and

train a robust network of volunteers to care for kittens and nursing mothers in their homes. They furnish all of the

supplies and medical services to nurture this fragile population. Caring staff are available around the clock to provide,

support, and comfort to new and experienced foster volunteers alike.

LONG AND STRONG POST EXAMPLES:

Feel free to copy and paste, and use the pictures shown here!

A sensitive email in the time of COVID-19

It is that time of year when APS of Durham is seeking donations for their annual Walk for the Animals fundraiser. This

year it is particularly difficult to compose this email.

We are in a crisis. The APS of Durham has been closed to volunteers. Staff, deemed essential personnel, is working

tirelessly without volunteer help to keep our animals safe. They have quickly implemented changes and adaptations of

their procedures to continue caring for the animals during the crisis. With their leadership the APS of Durham has:

*implemented an online signature program and conducted online adoption interviews.

*placed many animals in foster homes so that they can wait for adoption outside of the kennel environment and have

medical treatment in a loving temporary home.

*worked closely with a number of rescue organizations to place animals in their care.

*set up a pet food pantry for Durham citizens who need help keeping their pets at home.

*continued to support Durham citizens who have to surrender their pets, assuring them that we will do everything

possible to find their beloved pets the right home.

In March alone, APS had 115 adoptions, placed 71 animals in foster care, and sent 61 animals to our rescue placement

partners - all done while instituting new, creative practices to keep the public and our employees safe. That’s a whole lot

of love to send out to Durham.

There are many needs in our community and across the country right now. The APS of Durham has taught me that

animal welfare and human welfare are intertwined. Help pet owners. Help pets. This year for our major fundraiser, Walk

for the Animals, we are staying home but we are still raising money for the animals. Walkers will be in their own safe

corners of Durham on Saturday, May 23, between 9 am and 1 pm, united in their support of our local shelter.

Please go to https://secure.qgiv.com/event/wfta2/account/954776 to make a donation. The Walk has always been

about small donations joined together to do good. No donation is too small.

The story of Bear, who found his forever home.

Would you like to meet the absolute cutest guy in the world? Introducing Bear – a cuddly,

exuberant snuggly puppy who came to us pretty beat up. But don’t fret, his story has a very

happy ending.

For Bear, a new life began with surgery. Bear’s original mom fell upon hard times, and had to

move in with a friend. Unfortunately, the resident dog was plenty upset about having a new

house guest and wasn’t hiding it at all. Bear sustained extensive injuries from his new

housemate, and – although his mom loved him very much – she simply wasn’t able to provide

him with the medical care or housing he needed to address his urgent wounds and recuperate.

So Bear was referred to Animal Protection Society of Durham, where Dr. Bishop and her team of

medical technicians went right to work to treat his wounds. Bear sustained an injury to his eye, and it simply could not

be saved. Fortunately for Bear, Dr. Bishop is an excellent surgeon, with the skills necessary to remove his injured eye, fix

his other needs, and send him on the road to recovery.

Bear quickly became a favorite of the staff and volunteers at APS. We visited with him in his

recovery room every chance that we could, and he never lacked friendly company. Bear

ALWAYS greeted us with his wiggly-waggly grin and snickers – even with his big Victorian collar

around his extremely cute little head. We knew that Bear would be safe with us at APS, until we

could help find him a home to call his own. In the meantime, Bear received the absolute best

medical care possible so his wounds could heal and become as resilient as his amazing spirit.

Bear was so lucky that the good folks at the animal clinic referred his mom to Animal Protection

Society of Durham, where we have the ability and the medical talent to nurse him back to good

health. We are grateful that Bear’s original mom chose to trust APS of Durham to help mend his

wounds and find a new home. We are able to do work like this because of the generosity of our

wonderful contributors and supporters, like you. You have been our partner along the way. All

the best stories involve a village of support. And this one is no different. Please consider making

a gift to our Walk For The Animals so little bundles of joy – like Bear – can continue to receive the

care they need to start the new life that is waiting for them.

Page 16: Registration and Fundraising Guide · 2020. 4. 24. · SOCAIL MEDIA TOOKIT Since fundraising efforts are moving online this year, social media is going to play a huge part in your

The story of Harley, who found his forever home.

When Harley was surrendered to the shelter, she had been housed and tied out in the backyard most of the time. She

was not up to date on her vaccines, had not been spayed, and had severe burns. She arrived injured, sick and

traumatized, but our committed medical staff immediately saw that with loving care and medical attention, this girl

would eventually be a great addition to a loving family.

We addressed her burns, carefully ensuring that she received the medical attention necessary to avoid infection and

heal. We ensured that she was medically sound and ready to be spayed. We performed a behavior evaluation to gather

important information for a better idea about what kind of home she would thrive in. We brought her up to date on her

vaccinations, implanted a microchip and continued to let her heal.

When Harley was ready for adoption, a young couple came to visit the shelter and

immediately fell in love with her. I am pleased to report that Harley is now a full-

fledged member of their household. Because you were willing to invest in APS of

Durham, we were able to take the time necessary to tend to her wounds – both

physically and emotionally. Harley spends her days romping, cuddling and enjoying

the comfort and security of her new family.

At APS of Durham, we are fortunate to be in a position to medically evaluate all of our

animals here at the shelter. Because of support from caring contributors like you, we are able to take on the difficult

medical cases that require more time and resources and give deserving animals a second chance at love. Although we

do have certain limitations, we work hard to provide the necessary and possible medical treatment that plays a crucial

role in getting our animals placed in loving homes.

Harley’s story is one with a happy ending. Because of you, animals like Harley get a second chance.

Because of you, another animal will have a safe place to sleep tonight, somebody to show them

compassion and care tomorrow, and the hope of a new home. Please continue supporting the

Animal Protection Society of Durham so that we can ensure more pets, like Harley, survive and go

on to celebrate life in a loving home. Donate to the Walk For The Animals today.

Meet River – a shy girl named Serena while she was in our care at Animal

Protection Society of Durham.

Little did she know she’d soon be credited with saving her adopter’s life.

Jon, who lives in Durham, had recently been told he needed open heart

surgery. He was not only sick, he was also in a deep depression, so his father

suggested he visit a local animal shelter to find a companion that would help

lift his spirit. After all, there were so many animals in need of homes and

companions themselves.

Jon visited APS in the fall of 2016 to take a look around. Of all the dogs available, one dog seemed to connect with Jon as

he walked through the kennels. He had to meet her.

“Don’t get discouraged if she is hesitant to interact with you,” a dog handler said to Jon. “She is very shy.”

Just as the words left the volunteer’s mouth, River ran straight into Jon’s arms and nearly

jumped in his lap.

“I was so broken at that point and River must have known it,” Jon said. And just like that,

Jon and River fell in love with one another, and he welcomed her into his home.

Jon began taking River for walks every day. Short distances at first, then increasing

distance and frequency over time. River grew more confident in her new surroundings

and became attached to Jon and her new life.

Some time went by and Jon went back to the doctor to check the strength of his heart

and determine a date for surgery. He was overwhelmed with emotion as his doctor told

him his once inevitable open-heart surgery could be postponed. And one year later at his

next check-in, Jon was told he no longer needed surgery to save his life – River had done that for him.

Adding River to his life inspired Jon to make the changes necessary to turn his health around.

“The day I met River was the greatest day of my life,” he said. “She saved me

both emotionally and physically.”

Your contribution to APS of Durham’s Walk For The Animals makes a BIG

difference for the animals that we serve, providing hope for a new life, a new

home, and the chance to leave their mark on our world – even if only for the

one special person who adopts them. Your support is what facilitates stories

like River’s, and the thousands of dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits,

birds, and fish who find new homes or are reunited with their owners each

year from APS of Durham.

Tint Kittens, galore!

Every year, as we welcome the warmth of spring, Animal Protection Society of

Durham also gets ready to welcome hundreds of kittens into our shelter. Many

newborn kittens rely on the constant safekeeping provided by human caregivers

in order to survive, grow, and eventually find loving homes.

Without dedicated attention, they simply will not survive.

Your contribution to the Walk For The Animals can ensure the necessary supplies

to provide for the needs of these kitten litters, as well as the medical attention

and support to guide them through their journey. Can you please help make this

program a success, and increase these kittens’ chances of survival?

Together – with your generous contributions - we can nurture and save lives of

kittens that otherwise will not make it.

Now, more than ever, the support of our committed donors and volunteers is

necessary to help these kittens have a better chance at survival.

We are committed to doing our very best to save the kittens. Will you join us?
