Major Ed Pulido, U.S. Army (Ret.) is the Sr. VP Co-
Founding member of Folds of Honor and Co-Founder of Warriors for Freedom. On August 17th, 2004, Major Pulido was hit by an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) or road side bomb in Baquobah, Iraq that would change his life forever. He would be faced with multiple challenges including 17 operations, unclear and miscommunication on my whereabouts, numerous hospital stays, rehabilitative sessions, a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and finally, among the toughest battles of all – whether to stay in the military or become a medically discharged veteran. In the end, Major Pulido discovered a compelling desire to reach out to other wounded veterans and their families who were seeking help for their injuries and post-war obstacles. Major Pulido’s story has been shared on Good Morning America with Robin Roberts, in his keynote address from the NRA Convention in 2014 and finally in commentary on Fox News. He wrote Warrior for Freedom (WFF): Challenge, Triumph and Change based upon his true story which recounts the events of his life and his journey, with the aim to people
understand the visible and not so visible costs of war and help the general public and the corporate community understand how they can help our nation’s heroes and their families.

50,000+ Samples Later What Have We Learned? Sarah Mack Some may question your sanity when you express that indoor air is 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Others will nod in agreement before you can even finish the statement. Regardless of which side you are on, we all can agree that unnecessary chemical exposure should be avoided. Many are aware to dangers and concerns in the workplace but not as alert to exposures in the home. We will discuss driving factors for IAQ testing in the home and what data can be gathered. After reviewing 50,000+ samples for indoor air quality, what have we learned? What are the primary chemical contributors to poor IAQ – paint or maybe cooking? Is that amount just a little or is it substantial? How this info is expressed to the client can determine how he or she reacts and deals with the chemical contaminant. We will explore different visualizations of available big data. These illustrations and descriptions will prove helpful in describing complex chemical data in easy-to-understand terms for both current and prospective customers.

Are You Safe When Collecting Asbestos Bulk Samples? Can You Prove It? Michael Pinto The purpose of a Negative Exposure Assessment is to demonstrate that if a certain asbestos-related task is performed, according to standardized work procedures, that employee exposures will be lower than the Permissible Exposure Limit. An NEA can be based on “objective data,” such as scientific reports, published studies, or air monitoring that collects samples which allow the calculation of both 30 minute short-term exposure limits (STEL) and an eight hour time weighted average (TWA). According to the OSHA standard, an NEA based on air monitoring must be repeated every year unless the data from the monitoring is published as a report in an industry periodical or scientific journal. This presentation will describe an NEA project conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and current industry standards, and the equipment used to keep airborne fiber levels below both the current short-term exposure limits and the permissible exposure limit. Area sampling verified that collecting an extensive number of bulk samples in a small room did not create an ambient exposure problem.

Health Implications of Cannabis Residue Nadia Moore, PhD, DABT, ERT
Health implications of cannabis residues that may remain in residential structures following clandestine cannabis grows are a rising concern of unknown significance. Currently, structures presenting with an extremely pungent (“skunky”) cannabis odor are generally torn-down or gutted based on the offensiveness of the odor alone. Questions arise with more moderate situations as

there are currently no guidelines available to assist stakeholders determine whether chemicals are present at levels that could potentially impact human health or to conclude whether cleanup efforts were successful. Data from three investigations of seized or abandoned residential clandestine grow operations will be presented. This session will discuss how cannabis (i.e., THC, the most prevalent psychoactive cannabis component) affects the body, including how it is absorbed, metabolized, and distributed following oral and inhalation exposures. An overview of the framework used to derive health-protective screening values (HBSVs) for surface sampling will be presented, put into context with THC toxicity data, and used to derive a preliminary HBSV for THC on residential surfaces. Finally, results of paired samples collected before and after cleaning surfaces from naïve (uncleaned or minimally cleaned) residential clandestine grow operations will be shared that show (1) surfaces can exceed the derived screening level and (2) concentrations on surfaces are effectively reduced following cleaning.

Each year in the United States hundred of thousand of employees are injured or killed on the job. In addition, businesses face hundreds of thousand of
dollars in fines for not following the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (OSHA) standards. Many of these injuries and fines could be avoided had a simple Health and Safety Audit (HSA) been performed. This presentation will cover the basic of an HSA and give attendees an understanding of tools necessary to perform HSAs. Whether you are a consultant wanting to know more about health and safety issues or the Safety Director for a multimillion-dollar corporation this is a presentation you won’t want to miss.

Conducting Mercury Screening and Abatement at a Larger University Dave Klaustermeier Masoud Mohsenian
This presentation will walk people through some of the challenges that renovations face in areas that have historical use of elemental mercury and are
contaminated with mercury. We will discuss some of the difficulties with removing building components/devices that contain liquid mercury in a variety of buildings such as research laboratories, dental clinics and industrial coal fired power plants. Attendees will learn how to proactively conduct effective aggressive mercury vapor screening in order to find hidden mercury and limit the unintentional spreading of mercury during renovations, and the limitations of mercury vapor screening. Mercury contaminated waste is very expensive to dispose therefore the key is to segregate and test waste as it is generated in order to limit the quantity of mercury contaminated waste. In addition to discussing mercury abatement in laboratories the presenters will discuss some of the more unique scientific apparatus and building components they have encountered which contained mercury and how those apparatus and components were safely removed.

IAQ Tales featuring Spray Foam Insulation Sarah Mack Whether a consultant receiving questions or as a homeowner contemplating the installation of spray foam insulation, you’ve likely caught yourself in the middle of a pros and cons conversation regarding this insulation option. When things work as planned and without a hitch, spray foam insulation delivers outstanding performance. Those times when things don’t go so smoothly, lives and homes can be ruined. Sure, it is easy to get the manufacturer to step in when you see the foam not setting or experience the overwhelming amine like odor. The overall liability of this volatile reaction between parts A and B is one they have addressed and likely have developed protocol to handle. What happens when
the client is faced with a grey area and the not-so-easy-to-prove complication of application or mixing? With so many moving parts and specifications to meet, even the best installer/manufacturer can end up on the wrong side of a review and, possibly, litigation. We will discuss situations and unfavorable circumstances presented when spray foam installation doesn’t go quite right.

Local and State Asbestos Industry Regulation? How Did We Get Here and Where Are We Going? Marty Rutstein PhD
This session will explore the history and evolution of the modern era of asbestos
regulation, beginning in the late 1970s, through the implementation of AHERA and the most recently state and federal regulatory challenges. It will explore the future, and how consultants and contractors must be
ever more rigorous in anticipating not only the rules as written, but also the nuances, and insuring adherence to what is written. For ambiguous rules, efforts should be made to engage with regulators. Often such efforts can lead to a constructive dialogue where rules can be modified and improved. So, there is hope, but only by the efforts of professionals who really try to do it right. Rather than just accepting the regulations or complain about violations, consultants and contractors should join professional organizations and demand a seat at the regulatory table.

NOA In NYC? It’s Not Just a West Coast Thing Robert DeMalo M.Sc. Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA) is found in the contiguous USA, predominantly on the West Coast. On the East Coast the asbestos mostly follows the axis of the Appalachian Mountains. In a USGS map published in 2005, Brad Van Gosen listed 60 former asbestos mines, 66 former asbestos prospects and 205 asbestos occurrences on the Eastern United States, from Maine to Alabama. This presentation will discuss a case study of an important NOA site located in Staten Island which one of the five NYC boroughs. Samples were collected at an outcropping directly adjacent to a major highway. Rock, soil and water samples were collected and analyzed by numerous analytical methods. On Staten Island and Manhattan, a serpentinite lens can be found in north central Staten Island. Results showed that Chrysotile was found in all samples along with other mineral components such as lizardite, talc, olivine, chromite, and magnetite. The differences observed amongst the different analytical methodologies utilized will be presented and discussed. The history of asbestos prospecting and manufacturing in New Jersey and Staten Island will also be discussed.

OSHA’s Respirable Crystalline Silica Rule: Regulatory Changes and Enforcement Trends
Adele Abrams Esq., CMSP It is estimated that OSHA’s final rule on occupational
exposure to crystalline silica affects close to 2.3 million workers across more than 675,000 workplaces in many industries, primarily in construction but also a wide range of manufacturing and even retail operations. This means there’s a strong likelihood that an employer may have compliance
obligations under the final rule, which focuses on reducing the risk of sickness and death due to exposure to the carcinogen, which can cause lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and kidney disease. This presentation will review the basic requirements under existing law for control of silica in the workplace, the anticipated changes, and the enforcement pitfalls that have resulted in penalties exceeding $300,000 for one contractor! The presenter will also address OSHA’s FAQ guidance and efforts by Congress to fast-track an MSHA silica rule. You’ll learn how to:
• Identify the health and IH/engineering issues associated with silica as they relate to your organization or clients
• Analyze how OSHA and MSHA currently regulate silica at the federal level … and why states may have more stringent requirements
• Interpret the practical impact of recent silica litigation on health and safety compliance

Successful Vapor Mitigation: Floor Coating and Lessons Learned Suzi Rosen, PGThis session will explore a case study in which a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) activities identified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the subsurface and IAQ sampling confirmed the presence of VOCs, primarily tetrachloroethene (PCE), and trichloroethene (TCE). Based on the planned reuse of the property as a potential medical office space,
residential screening levels were applied as target cleanup levels for the property. Although the mitigation approach successfully reduced indoor air VOC concentrations to acceptable levels, this presentation will present the many challenges and lessons learned throughout the project.

Why and How to Test Negative Pressure Units for Leaks Gautam Patel
Containment of asbestos fibers on a construction site is critical to the health and safety
of workers and civilians on or near the site. Negative pressure units or NPU’s are commonly used to help contain asbestos fibers by drawing the fibers out of a containment area via a duct and into a HEPA filter. The primary job of the NPU is to remove the asbestos fibers and exhaust clean air into the environment. This presentation will take a look at why Negative Pressure Units need to be tested for leaks, how to perform leak testing and some of the standards around the world that regulate the testing of NPU’s.
