Description: This three-day course will enable participants to compute water-surface-profiles using computer program HEC-RAS in a sound and effective man-ner. Day one, you will develop a river model, run simulations and review program output. An overview of the computational methods and data requirements will be provided. Day two, you will learn how to add roadway crossings with bridges or culverts to your model. Day three will include an overview of Mapper (GIS tools), FEMA floodway procedures, and HEC-RAS Output Review and Analysis. A FEMA floodway model will be developed in a workshop. All workshops include a review, with an emphasis on output analysis.

No prior program experience is required; however, a technical background is needed.

Instructor Vernon R. Bonner, PE, is one of the nation’s most experienced and knowl-edgeable HEC-RAS trainers. He served 20 years as Chief, Training Division, Hydrologic Engineering Center; Davis, CA, and he has more than 38 years of water resource engineering experience in planning, reservoir system analysis, river hydraulics, flood-plain management and program administration. In addition, Mr. Bonner managed and participated in the development of software (HEC-2, HEC-RAS, HEC-5, HEC-ResSIM) and the conduct of technical studies for the National Floodplain Management Program, the National Hydropower Assessment and several basinwide reservoir systems. He has presented seminars and workshops in hydrology (HEC-1, HEC-HMS) and river hydraulics (HEC-2, HEC-RAS, UNET) and reservoir system analysis (HEC-5, HEC-ResSim) for the following:

¾Government: HEC, USACE District and Division offices, TVA, FEMA, Ministry of Natural Resources Toronto and state wa-ter resource agencies in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wisconsin. ¾Universities: Arizona State at Tempe, California at Davis, Colorado at Denver, Colorado State at Fort Collins, Michi-gan State, Penn State, Rutgers, Texas at Austin, and Wis-consin at Madison. ¾Organizations: ASCE Conferences and Chicago Section, AS-FPM Conferences, World Meteorological Organization and Panama Canal Authority.

Spring 2017 Course InformationClasses run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day.

Basic River and Floodplain ModelingUsing HEC-RAS Version 5.1*

Using DTM DATA in HEC-RAS Version 5.1*

Description: This one-day workshop will show you the steps required to import Terrain models, develop River-Reach data, and produce output dis-plays. HEC-RAS 5.1 will have the ca-pabilities of GeoRAS 10.2, with the expanded Mapper functions. You will be able to create Geometry files from Digital Terrain Models (DTM) im-ported through Mapper and produce floodplain maps from your RAS simula-tions. Each step will have a workshop

so you will know how to use these new capabilities. These workshops include:

• Creating a Terrain Model in Mapper: An overview of Mapper will be given, and instruction on importing digital terrain data, defining a terrain layer, and associating it with geometry files.

• Creating Geometry Data from Terrain: Defining River-Reach data, laying out cross sections, cutting cross sections from terrain, and added optional data.

• Creating Map Layers from Model Output: Exporting results to Mapper, adding output variables, mapping inundated areas, and add-ing online maps as background.

This course assumes you know how to do RAS 1D, steady- or unsteady-flow modeling.
