Hello Everyone, I hope you are all enjoying this hot summer weather. I’d like to feature a few things of interest from the Board. We have three main issues we are addressing. They are: Limited parking at the Centre The lack of space at the Centre to accommodate all activities The extreme popularity of the Wednesday BBQ Obviously there is nothing we can do to expand the parking lot. A couple of suggestions were put forward. Try to arrange car pooling with folks that you know are coming at the same time or for the same activity. This could really help reduce the number of vehicles using the space. If you can’t find a space within the lot you can park on John West Way. I know this is not ideal. Space at the Centre is at a premium now. The Board is exploring alternatives. We are looking into setting up a committee to look into alternative venues for some of the activities. Again, this is not ideal, but it may be our only option for now. We will keep you updated on this issue. The Wednesday BBQ is a very popular activity, but it’s success is causing some problems. People have been disappointed to arrive and find they cannot participate as we have reached our maximum number. Carol is trying very hard to come up with some solutions. We have upped the number of people who can attend to 70. Each person is entitled to purchase a maximum of 2 tickets. We are creating a number system to try to address the issues of people not being able to get the entree of their choice. I know there has been some frustration over these issues. I ask you to bear in mind that the people running the BBQ, especially the cooks, are all volunteers. Please don’t blame them for your disappointment. I assure you we are working hard to find solutions. On a different note, the Town of Aurora has set up an Aurora Cultural Master Plan. In the next few Board Pages I will try to give you some information on a few groups that you may be of interested to you. Take care and enjoy our wonderful Centre. Dave

Memories+ founder Harvey Dix takes caring for people very personally. After a senior family member had a debilitating stroke several years ago, he saw first hand how difficult it could be for families in this type of situation to care for a loved one. Harvey had a very successful (and demanding) career at the time and realized that caring for a loved one while balancing a career and raising a young family was next to impossi-ble. Through living this experience it became very clear that this is something that was not uncommon in today’s society. He realized that he was part of the “sandwich generation”.

Harvey wanted to make a difference and took a leap of faith by leaving his career and starting a business in home health care by purchasing a franchise of Retire-At-Home Services.

Retire-At-Home was a great vehicle to serve the community with the highest standards of care that allow seniors to remain in the home that they love no matter what their challenges, but Harvey realized that there was more to it than that. People need to remain active both physically and mentally. And being a social butterfly himself he realized the importance of social engagement.

After almost 8 years building a solid reputation as a premium health care service provider in the York / South Simcoe region, Harvey is pleased to bring Memories+ Adult Program and Wellness Centre to the

community.

Located in the heart of Newmarket at 291 Davis Drive, Memories+ will open its doors in September and will be providing its members with a fun and interactive supervised environment. Family members can now have peace of mind that their loved ones are cared for when they can’t be there.

Some exciting features that the Memories+ Program Centre will offer include:

Flexible full and half day programs Fit Minds™ CST programming built into daily

activities Holistic curriculum (Physical, Mental,

Emotional & Spiritual needs are covered) Fresh snacks and catered meals are provided Early and Late service Supervised trips and outings Additional services available on-site (Foot care,

hair styling, hearing clinics, etc.)

Stimulating social engagement is a key element in healthy aging and can result in better mental health, increased self-esteem and overall better quality of life. Find out how the Memories+ program can help you or a loved one to achieve the quality of life that you deserve.

Call today to set up an assessment and book a FREE half day trial.

Harvey Dix is the Executive Director of Retire-At-Home Services and now Memories+ Adult Program and Well-ness Centre. He can be reached at 1-855-558-HOME (4663) and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.

Knotty Knitters A warm welcome from the Knotty Knitters. We are at the Seniors Centre from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Mondays throughout the year.

We knit, embroider, crochet, laugh, exchange jokes and share family happenings. We have lots of camaraderie. If we run into a problem on a project, we help each other out. Beginners are also quite welcome. Stop in and have a peek at what the Knotty Knitters have been up to this past year and perhaps treat yourself to a warm shawl or sweater. We even knit coats for our four legged friends. At our annual Spring sale the Knotty Knitters were hard at work before, during and after to help make the day a success. The hugs and smiles are always free and lasting friendships are formed. So feel free to stop in at any time and stay for a look and chat. If you see something one of the Knotty Knitters is making and wish to purchase it you can do so as well. All proceeds go back into the Centre. We love to talk. If you wish to join us please do. You will be more than welcome.

Remember we are not strangers, only friends you have not yet met.

Evergreen Choir Who is excited? We’re not excited!! In truth, we are all excited. The sad news was that we were losing our popular director of eight years, Dr. Richard Heinzle. The good news is that we have a new director, Mr. Dan Lenz, highly recommended by Richard and whose name is causing some excitement among our male choristers who know of his reputation as the Conductor of the Regional Male Chorus Newmarket for eight years and who, at present, is the Front Line Director for the Upper Canada Chordsmen Chorus, Newmarket and also The Conductor and Musical Director of the Geor-gian Bay Concert Choir. So, yes, we are excited!

If you have ever thought of joining the choir, now is the time to do it. It isn’t necessary to have a degree in music or to be able to sight read. All that is needed is to love singing and to be able to carry a tune. The price to join the choir is $50.00 for our season, which runs from September to June, but you do not pay the $1.00 activity fee on choir days. Speaking of September, this year we return for our first rehearsal in the McKenzie Room on Wednesday, September 12. We are request-ed not to enter the room before 1:45 p.m. This year there is a slight change to our starting time. We begin at 2 pm and finish at 3.30 p.m. For our returning members, or if you are planning to join the choir, please do so at the front desk before our starting date. This is most helpful because it saves a great deal of time. As yet, there is no date set for renewing memberships. When we have one you will receive a notice. Have a great August, and we will see you in September.

Silver Stars Help wanted please. The Silver Stars are in need of two more people for two small roles in their next fun production of Snow White and the Seven Seniors. The Silver Stars are also looking for help in sewing some of our costumes.
