Dans une lettre en date du 10 Décembre 1921^ accompagnant v

un Mémoire /’concernant les faits expoaéa dans la note adressée

le 28 Octobre 1921 par Monsieur le Ministre des Affaires Etran­

gères de Lithuanie à Sir Eric Drummond, Secrétaire Général de la

Société des Nations,’’Monsleur Skirmunt, Ministre des Affaires

Etrangères de Pologne a apporté à Votre Excellence des explications

sur le pogromes dont furent victimes dans les premiers jours

d 1Octobre les institutions scolaires et économiques lithuaniennes

de Vilna.

Ces explications ôtant en contradiction flagrante avec

la réalité des faite, le Gouvernement lithuanien ae réserve le

droit de présenter àans un bref délai à Votre Excellence une ré­

ponse détaillée apportant toutes les précisions susceptibles d’é­

tablir irréfutablement la vérité dee aasertions insérées dans la

note du Gouvernement lithuanien du 28 Octobre.

A Monsieur le Ministre de la

Défense Nationale,

Relativement aux incidents qui ont eu

lieu le 24 Septembre dernier à Ponievèje entre les soldats du

bataillon d’instruction du 8e Régiment et les élèves du Lycée

polonais, j'ai l’honneur de porter à la connaissance de Monsieur

le Ministre ce qui suit:

L* instruction la plus minutieuse effectuée

à ce sujet a établi que,sur la Place de Vytautas à Ponievè je,le

bataillon d’instruction du 8e Régiment se livrait à ses exercices

quotidiens.Après l’appel les soldats chantèrent l’Hymne national.

Sur la même place ,à une distance d’environ quarante pas ,les

élèves du Lycée polonais jouaient au foot-balï.Ce jeu se prolongea

pendant 1’exécution de l’Hymne.D’après les dépositions du lieutenant

du bataillon d’instruction, Marzelis, les élèves polonais avaient

été avertis au préalable que pendant 1’exécution du Chant National

les jeux auraient à cesser et qu’ils devraient se découvrir comme

leurs camarades lithuaniens qui jouaient au même moment sur la place.

Le 24 Septembre,en dépit de ces avertissements, alors que les sol­

dats étaient en garde et exécutaient l’Hymne, les lycéens polonais,

dans un but évident de provocation ,commencèrent une partie de

foot-bail à très peu de distance du bataillon.Un élève du Lycée

lithuanien Sliogeris, qui jouait avec les lycéens polonais,se dé­

couvrit au moment où fut entonné l’Hymne ,et écouta immobile.Le

chant achevé ,1e lieutenant Mazelis donna l’ordre aux soldats de

demander aux lycéens polonais leurs papiers d’identité et de les

questionner sur les raisons de leur attitude pendant 1’exécution

de l’Hymne Nationale Les lycéens répondirent qu’ils ne connaissaient

pas l’Hymne en question.Là-desrus ,plusieurs soldats,indignés de

cette réponse ,ôtèrent leur ceinture et firent le geste dè frapper

les coupables qui s’empressèrent de prendre la fuitélD’après le

certificat du médecin du Lycée polonais,sept élèves ont été

légèrement atteints.

J ’ai porté cette affaire devant le Tribunal du 8e Ré­

giment afin que les soldats coupables soient jugés conformément

à l’article 475 du Code pénal.En ce qui concerne la conduite

des Elèves du Lycée polonais, j ’ai l’honneur de Vous prier ,

Monsieur le Ministre ,de vouloir bien faire donner par l’inter­

médiaire de Monsieur le Ministre de l’Instruction Publique ,les

indications nécessaires à l’administration du Lycée polonais ,

pour qu’elle explique aux élèves de cet établissement ce que c’est

qu’un Hymne national et quelle doit être l’attitude des citoyens

de la Lithuanie pendant son exécution.
