Rehabilitation of traditional Greek windmill[Project title]
PROJECT SUMMARY
This project concerns the rehabilitation of traditional Greekwindmill with a new type of rotor with automatically variablesail surface according to the intensity of the wind. This allowsthe windmill to work in any wind condition optimizing energyproduction. If the wind is strong, the triangular sails arewrapped automatically and consequentially the speed isreduced, preventing damage, if the wind is weak, the sail areunwrapped so the speed is increased. This new type ofwindmill, characterized by the fact that is in the shape of atraditional Greek windmill, can be easily integrated in thelandscape of Greek islands to provide energy production in anisolated region characterized by strong winds.

MATERIALS
The tower of the windmill is made of local stone, the sails aremade of canvas and the technological components are mostlymade of metal.
STATEMENTS ON SUSTAINABILITY
Landscape integrationCommon wind generators are banned in some Greek islandsbecause of high environmental impact. The rehabilitation of old windmills with new technology is thebest way to allow energy production without spoiling thelandscape. The windmills have not environmental impact, they are alsoless noisy.
Windmill restorationWindmills are a symbol of Greek islands, they were used forcenturies to provide mechanical force. Nowadays are notused, most of them are already destroyed and only few arepreserved. By giving them the same function, to provideenergy, we can save them from destruction.
Enhancement of local manufacturingThe windmill construction can be an integration of industry, that provides technological components, and traditionalbuilding.

PROJECT VISUALIZATION
Rehabilitation oftraditional Greek windmillwith a new type of rotorwith automaticallyvariable sail surfaceaccording to the intensityof the wind. This allowsthe windmill to work inany wind condition andoptimizes energyproduction. The speed ofrotation of the rotor isdetected by a transducer, the data collected aresent to a microprocessorwhich after processingthe data commands theprogressive wrapping orunwrapping of thetriangular sails until theyreach predeterminedattitude.
Integration with thelandscape. This new typeof windmill, characterizedby the fact that is in theshape of a traditionalGreek windmill and canbe easily integrated in thelandscape of Greekislands and provideEnergy production in anisolated regioncharacterized by strongwinds.
