General
ARCUSAFLEX coupling design AC
The ARCUSAFLEX coupling is a highly flexible flywheel coupling with an axial plug-in facility. It provides atorsionally soft connection between an internal combustion engine and a driven machine.
The highly flexible torque transmission characteristic is achieved by a disc-shaped rubber element that is subjectedto a torsional load and enables both, the absorption of high torsional vibrations and the compensation of major misalignments. For an optimum adaptation to the conditions of application three different kinds of vulcanisates are
available: For application temperatures up to 80°C a natural/synthetic caoutchouc mixture as a standard version,up to 100°C a more heat resistant mixture and for higher application temperatures up to 130°C a silicone mixture.
The inside diameter of the rubber disc element is vulcanized directly to a taper hub or bolt-on sleeve. The toothedprofile on the circumference of the element provides in service a virtually backlash-free, positive plug-in connectionto the coupling flange.
The ARCUSAFLEX flywheel coupling series covers a torque range from 200 - 110000 Nm (corresponding toapprox. 6500 kW at 1000 rpm). Element versions of different torsional stiffnesses are available for optimizing thetorsional vibration range. The flange connection dimensions of ARCUSAFLEX couplings comply predominantlywith the SAE J 620 and DIN 6281 standards. Other flange dimensions or overall lengths can be provided onrequest.
Shaft-to-shaft connections when required can be met by ARCUSAFLEX shaft couplings which consist of ARCUSAFLEX flywheel couplings of the standard design equipped with a second hub.
Type approvals by a number of leading classification societies are available. If required, couplings complete withfail safe devices can also be supplied.
ARCUSAFLEX couplings comply to explosion protection according to ATEX 95. They are certified according to thedirective 94/9/EC and may be used in hazardous locations (categories M2, 2 + 3).

ARCUSAFLEX type AC-T with taper bush
The ARCUSAFLEX flywheel coupling type AC-T...F2 is equipped with a taper bush for shaft mounting. The rubber disc element is vulcanized directly to the taper hub. After completion of the assembly, a shrink-fit-like connection,free from backlash is established between the coupling hub with rubber disc element and the shaft.
Thanks to the use of commercially available taper bushes with a number of different bore dimensions, the need for finishing the bore and keyway of the coupling hub is omitted for the ARCUSAFLEX coupling type AC-T. Thetorque, which can be transmitted, depends on the particular taper bush.
Advantage: Ease of assembly and disassembly with no need for special tools!
ARCUSAFLEX type AC...F2 with bolted hub
The ARCUSAFLEX flywheel coupling type AC...F2 has the r ubber disc element vulcanized to a bolt-on sleevewhich in turn is bolted to a hub or similar component.
Advantage: Depending on the arrangement of the rubber disc element, two different mounting lengths can beachieved using one and the same coupling hub.

It is thecustomer’s/user’s responsibility to ensure there are no inadmissible loads acting on all the components. Especiallyexisting SAE bolt connections have to be checked regarding the transmittable torque, if necessary other measures,e.g. additional reinforcement by pins, may be required. It is also the customer’s/user’s responsibility to make surethe dimensioning of the shaft and keyed or other connection is correct. With the type AC-T...F2 the transmittabletorque is dependant among others on the torque capacity of the taper bush.

Selection of the proper coupling sizeThe coupling size to be used in conjunction with internal combustion engines is dimensioned and selected with aview to torsional vibration. For a preliminary selection use the engine torque T AN, a general safety factor of S = 1.3 -1.5 should be applied for ARCUSAFLEX couplings with flexible rubber disc elements of natural/synthetic
caoutchouc.
The following requirements should be satisfied for a proper selection of the coupling size:
1. The nominal torque capacity T KN of the couplingshould be at least equal to the max. engine torque T ANat any operating temperature while taking the tem-perature factor St into account.
Calculation of the nominal engine torque:
The temperature factor St allows for a decreasing loadcarrying capability of the coupling at elevated ambient
temperatures. In this connection St = St1 is valid for t t2
2. The maximum torque capacity TKmax of the couplingshould be at least equal to the highest torque Tmax atany operating temperature while taking the tem-perature factor St into account.
3. The permissible continuous fatigue torque under reversing stresses TkW of the coupling should be atleast equal to the highest fatigue torque under reversing stresses TW encountered throughout theoperating speed range while taking the temperatureand frequency into account. The frequency factor Sf allows for the frequency dependence of the permis-sible continuous fatigue torque under reversingstresses TKW (10 Hz) for other frequencies f x.
The dimensioning of the coupling should be checked for permissible coupling loads by means of a torsionalvibration analysis which will be conducted by us on request. When using ARCUSAFLEX couplings in drives withgreat torque transmission variations, an additional safety factor should be applied for torque transmission to thedriven machine. Lists specifying couplings assigned to different ratings and torsional vibration conditions areavailable for all common internal combustion engines operating at constant speeds to facilitate your selection of anoperationally safe coupling.
The coupling can be equipped with an additional balancing mass on the primary or secondary side, if this isrequired due to the torsional vibration conditions or for control reasons.

All boIts and screws must be tightened to the specified torques during assembly in order to ensure a reliable torquetransmission. Prior to putting the machinery into operation, all bolts and screws of the coupling must be checked for proper fitand tightness. The indicated torques apply to an total friction factor of µ = 0.14. For further questions please ask REICH-KUPPLUNGEN.
Note: The of the coupling sizes AC 2,3 - AC 10D have to be mountedaluminium flanges only with washers. We recommend to use washers as big as possible, but minimumdimensions according to DIN 433. If needed bolts of grade 10.9 with suitable washers andthe corresponding tightening torque can be used, please consult us.

AlignmentCareful alignment of the coupling is an essential requirement for detached, non-flanged machinery in order toensure proper functioning of the coupling and to avoid premature wear of the rubber element.
Flywheel couplings shall be aligned from the shaft-side coupling half to either one of the machined surfaces of theengine flywheel or engine housing. Where shaft couplings are used, the angular and radial displacements betweenthe two coupling halves are determined by applying the usual dial indicator method. The alignment requirements of the other application components have to be considered additionally.

General technical descriptionCardan shafts are used in a drive train when a large shaft displacement or an extended distance between the driveand the driven components must be compensated. Depending on the arrangement of the drive train components, anon-uniform motion of the speed may result, and since cardan shafts exhibit some torsion flexibility, the mass of theprime mover and driven machine may induce a resonant system.
If the prime mover is an internal combustion engine, a highly flexible AC-VSK coupling is required to protect the drivetrain from dynamic overload. Highly flexible AC-VSK couplings are capable of shifting resonant ranges below the
lowest operating speed and of reducing resonance-induced vibratory torques under reversed stresses to tolerablelevels.
The highly flexible AC-VSK coupling is mounted on the engine flywheel, ahead of the drive train with drive shaft. The AC-VSK coupling contains its own axial and radial bearing to support the weight of the drive shaft and its reactionforces.
Coupling Sizes
The AC-VSK coupling series is available in nine standard sizes covering a torque range from 390 to 20 000 Nm. REICH-
KUPPLUNGEN has an extensive programme of couplings to cover nearly every drive configuration. Customized solu-
tions can be developed and manufactured even in small batches or as prototypes. Calculation programmes are available
for coupling selection and sizing. - Please challenge us!
Appl ication of the highly flexible ARCUSAFLEX-VSK couplings
For use with combustion engines in conjunction with drive shafts for splitter gearboxes, torque converters, ship gear-boxes, control gears and pump drives, for example in drives of construction equipment, excavators, cranes, marinepropulsion, locomotives, pump installations and dump trucks.

The highly flexible ARCUSAFLEX-VSK couplings of the type AC-VSK ... F2 are specially designed for fittingto flywheels of internal combustion engines. The coupling flanges of the standard design therefore matchengine flywheels with SAE connecting dimensions.
The highly flexible coupling element , is made of rubber bonded to steel discs and is mounted with an axialpreload acting on the thrust bearing. The output flange , used to connect the cardan shaft is precisely locatedby means of the thrust bearing and the radial bearing ensuring excellent concentricity.
The dynamic performance of the coupling is improved by the pre-loaded rubber element and stabilizing effectof the support bearings providing enhanced damping capacity due to additional frictional damping.

Coupling size selectionThe selected coupling for internal combustion engine drives should be verified
by a torsional vibration analysis which we will provide on request. A preliminary
selection of the coupling can, however, be made based on the continuous en-
gine power being transmitted.
Calculation of the nominal drive torque T AN:
The nominal torque capacity TKN of the coupling should be at least equal to
the maximum engine torque T AN at any operating temperature.
The temperature factor St allows for the decreasing load capacity of the coup-
ling when affected by elevated ambient temperatures close to the coupling.
The torsional vibration analysis to verify the coupling selection should confirm
that the permissible continous vibratory torque under reversing stresses TKW
is at least equal to the highest vibratory torque under reversing stresses TWencountered throughout the operating speed range whilst taking into account
the temperature and frequency.
The frequency factor Sf allows for the frequency dependence of the permis-
sible continuous vibratory torque under reversing stresses TKW (10 Hz) when
operating with a different frequency f x.
