This presentation deck includes a broad range of successful

precedents of innovative design and programming ideas.

These should serve to inspire potential applicants and not

limit the scope of their submissions.

The Competition seeks visionary ideas for physical

infrastructure projects as well as programming initiatives

that promote:

• the Canal System as a tourist destination and

recreational asset

• sustainable economic development along the canals

and beyond

• the heritage and historic values of the Canal System

• the long-term financial sustainability of the Canal

System

– The world’s first above ground park

– A former industrial site that was occupied by an oil

and gas corporation

– Transformed into an outdoor sculpture park by the

Seattle Art Museum

Atlanta BeltLine, Atlanta, GA– Former railway corridor

– Provides a network of public parks, multi-use trails

and transit through reuse of 22-miles of rail

infrastructure in South Atlanta

– Programming includes fitness classes, workshops,

events, and tours

Underwater Restaurant, Norway – Europe’s first underwater restaurant

– Also serves as a research center for marine life

– Designed by Snøhetta

Ballard Locks Fish Ladder, Seattle, WA– The locks in Seattle are a critical link for salmon and

other fish heading upstream. A fish ladder with 21

steps allows fish to climb to the freshwater side

– A viewing area allows visitors to watch the fish

navigate these steps in the lock.

Cheonggyecheon Stream-Park, South Korea– Reconstructed transportation infrastructure in

downtown Seoul

– Naturalized waterway with public space, amenities in

channel

– Active pedestrian oriented recreation and cultural

event hub

Los Angeles River, Los Angeles, CA– Joint project between the USACE and City of LA to

restore 11 miles along the LA River

Arizona Canal, AZ– Blooms: A public art installation reconnecting the

city with the canal

indigenous people

Hamilton Canal Innovation District, Lowell, MA– An in progress, transit-oriented, waterfront

development consisting of 17 parcels of land in the

heart of Lowell

– Aims to strengthen residential and commercial

markets, expand the City’s employment base, and

broaden the population base of creative

professionals

– Sites around the canal walk will be developed that

will make the waterfront more inviting and

interesting

Battersea Power Station, London– Repurposed coal-fired power station on the Thames

– Converted to mixed-use office, residential, and retail

hub

– Façade preserved in homage to the site’s industrial

past

Canalside Cottages, Scotland – Former lock-keeper and canal workers’ cottages

have been restored into high-quality, self catering

holiday accommodations

– Third-party funding was secured for the restoration

– Cottages are available to rent for holidays through

Natural Retreats

Canada– A cross between a tent and rustic cabins

– A unique outdoor experience for people wanting to

visit the canals

– Accommodations are spread across sites along the

Canadian waterways

Regents Canal, UK– Hosts a multitude of events aimed at celebrating the

canal’s history, to bring new visitors to the canals, and

entertain guests

– One of these events is the Angels Canal Festival,

which includes a children’s fair, rides, boat trips, art,

live music and street theatre

WaterFire, Providence, RI– Simultaneous free public art installation, performance

work, urban festival, civic ritual, and spiritual

communal ceremony

– Annual event drawing many visitors

– Economic driver for the area

Lock ‘n Paddle, Peterborough, Canada– A canoeing event in celebration of the National

Canoe Day

– Canoers were invited to create a new record for the

Peterborough Lift Lock

– 138 paddlers from Ontario, neighboring states, the

UK and Australia took part in the experiment

Open Days, UK– Each year free events are held that invite people to

take a look at the inner workings of the canals’

infrastructure

– One of these events included ‘gig in a lock’, where an

international contemporary music composer and

sonic artist, Kaffe Matthews, performed at the bottom

of a 14-ft-deep brick lock chamber in London

Floating Cinema Barge, UK– An award-winning structure designed by Duggan

Morris Architects

– Some events take place inside the barge

– Programming also involves outdoor screenings, canal

tours, workshops and events along the waterways of

East London and beyond

Winterfest, Lowell, MA– A park by the canal is transformed into a winter

beer garden with food trucks, craft brewers, wine

merchants and live music with the backdrop of

illuminated canals

Switzerland Nationwide Wayfinding for Hikers– One of the best hiking signage systems in the world

– Extends nationwide and has 50,000 signs and trail

markers to inform hikers about their destination,

hiking difficulty, and provides time estimates,

allowing hikers to customize their routes.

– All trail signs and markers are installed and

maintained by volunteer employees of the cantonal

hiking associations or municipal employees, through

a public-private partnership.

Museum of London’s Augmented Reality

Wayfinding App– Museum of London is using Augmented Reality to

promote its collection,

– An app by the museum highlights 250 locations on

an interactive Google map.

– Users can click on any of these locations to get a

historical image from that specific viewpoint in

real-time over today’s streetscape.
