today the Church interrupts

our Advent of sincere repentance

with a reminder to avoid dour shadows

that the readings (and the weather) might cause

be joyful in the waiting and preparing

confident that the One whom we await is at hand

“at hand” means not only near but here

though hidden

we are like a farmer looking anxiously

for the precious fruit of the earth

knowing that it cannot be hurried

regardless of present hunger and desire

we are waiting for a moment of revelation

of faith!justifying clarity, redemptive Presence

in the meantime we must be patient as farmers

the “meantime” is sometimes hard on us

cold, barren, empty days

when plans are made and work is done

with precious few signs to nourish

our expectation of something wondrous to come

use your precious “meantime” says the Church,

to joyfully take hold of this fragile universe

this wayward broken world

patiently strengthen hands that are feeble

make firm knees that are weak

feed the hungry, care for the vulnerable

be patient and rejoice for He is at hand

though we cannot discern him

we wait joyfully for the day when his presence

is revealed and all will be well

as promised

~E.M. Jeep

Rejoice in the Lord always!

Again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near.

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE • River Forest, IL

On this joyful Third Sunday of Advent

— Gaudete Sunday — we focus on the

joy of anticipating the Lord’s presence

in our lives. We are encouraged to

invite, welcome, and celebrate.

The Invitation

Start reaching out now in anticipation of Christmas Day

to family, friends, and neighbors and welcome them

home. Make plans to spiritually worship Christ our Savior

together with your parish family. Prepare yourself

through regular daily prayer and the sacraments!

Although we are not having an Advent Reconciliation

Service, regularly scheduled confessions are heard

every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday morning after

weekday Mass, and an added opportunity will be

available Tuesday, December 24, after morning Mass.

Make special note of this year’s holy day Mass schedule.

Remember there are only two Masses on Christmas Day

— at 9:00 and 11:00 am. Plan to be with us!

The Welcome

This is the first Christmas to be

spent in our newly painted and

cleaned church. With the extra

people expected at our

celebrations, there are still

opportunities to assist with

greeting, hospitality, and ushering.

Additionally, our parish can use

your help with the decorating on

Christmas Eve morning. Much has

to happen in order to make ready our sanctuary and

church interior so we can joyfully celebrate together.

Don’t forget to reach out to those seniors or others you

know who might need assistance to join us. What a great

act of charity it is to brighten someone’s Christmas by

bringing them to Mass so they, too, can pray and sing to

the Lord. We have a wonderful accessible section at the

front of church to accommodate those with walkers or

transport chairs. Encourage your loved ones to use these

special seats and make the experience as easy as

possible for them — we will bring Holy Communion to

anyone sitting in these designated areas.

The Celebration

Finally, we cannot have a celebration without the

generous service of so many. A special pre-thank you to

all who assist by decorating the interior and exterior of

our church, by serving in a liturgical ministry, or with our

music ministry. In appreciation to you all!

~Fr. Szmyd

DECEMBER 15, 2019 • Third Sunday of Advent

This year we elevated the Advent Wreath to a place

of honor next to the pulpit so all can see it better.

Many thanks to all of the families who have volun-

teered to light the candles before each Mass.

Remember that we light the rose-colored candle on

what’s traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday,

a name taken from the Latin word for “Rejoice.” It’s

a sign that the time for our Lord’s coming is near.

First Reconciliation While Advent is very different from Lent in its

penitential tone, this still is a time when we want

to partake of the Sacrament of Penance and

Reconciliation to ready our hearts and minds

for the joyous celebration of our Lord’s birth.

Second graders in St. Luke School and St. Luke’s

Religious Education Program received the

sacrament for the first time last Saturday right

after they completed a retreat with their parents

(shown at left). Please continue to pray for all of

the children who will receive their First Eucharist

next April, as well as the 8

th

graders who will be

confirmed in March.

Holiday Bulletin Deadlines Please note there are two early deadlines for bulletin

submissions this week due to the holiday season:

December 29 bulletin

(covers events from December 30-January 5)

January 5 bulletin

(covers events from January 6-12)

due by this Wednesday, December 18, by 9:00 am

Brown Bag Groceries Needed It’s the third Monday of the month tomorrow, and our

7th graders are hoping some more volunteers can help

them with some grocery items for their Brown Bag

Project.

As part of their Mercy Year preparation for Con-

firmation, the students are packing 150 “lunches” for

the Fraternité Sisters of Notre Dame to hand out to

Chicago’s homeless on the first and third Mondays of

each month.

What’s typically needed? A jar of mayonnaise, 600

slides of sandwich bread, 150 slices of cheese and deli

meat, 50 desserts, and, of course, 150 luncheon bags.

You can learn more about this project, and exactly

what supplies are needed now for tomorrow’s brown

bag day, by going to our Signup Genius page at

https://tinyurl.com/lukebrownbags.

The grocery items can be dropped off during Religious

Education classes in St. Luke School on Sunday morning

between 10:00-11:00 am or at the Religious Education

Office on Monday by 3:00 pm.

An adult volunteer also is needed each lunch day to

deliver the bags to the sisters by 5:30 pm at 502 N.

Central in Chicago.

Thank You for Your Support! Thank you to all our wonderful

parishioners for your gracious

support of the St. Luke Respect

Life Wreath Sale last weekend.

Your overwhelming support of

this Culture of Life event assists

many life-giving programs in our community!

Thank you, and may God bless you and your family

with much joy during the holidays!

All donations for our parish

Giving Tree must be under

the tree by the end of the

11:00 Mass today (Sunday)

so our Peace and Justice

Committee can collect and

deliver them to Housing Forward (PADS) in time to

hand them out to the homeless seeking shelter this

Christmas.

If shopping is not your thing, St. Luke’s Peace and Justice

Committee also is collecting cash/check donations for

Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement Program. The

archdiocesan agency has been helping newly arrived

refugees from all parts of the world find housing and

employment opportunities and transition into new life in

our city. However, cutbacks in federal funding have

seriously hurt this program’s services.

Look for the collection box next to the Giving Tree

and help make sure that our Church can do everything

possible to make a new home for these individuals and

families in our community.

Today, December 15, is the last class in 2019 for

our 2nd grade Sunday Religious Education Session.

Classes will resume Sunday, January 12.

Wednesday afternoon and evening sessions will

meet this Wednesday, December 18, and then break

for the holidays. Those sessions will resume on

January 8.

Confirmation Saint Reports can still be turned in as

soon as possible to school or re office. A letter to

Bishop Rojas (with picture) requesting Confirmation is

due this Wednesday, December 18, to the school or

Religious Education office.

Home Catechesis families are asked to look for the

Bible presentation from our last family gathering.

You should receive this in your email.

Looking ahead, Sunday, January 12, will kick off

Celebrate Religious Education Week. Parents are

invited to attend the Religious Education session with

their child that week, and everyone is invited to

Waldron Hall after all of the Masses for a special

activity display and light refreshments.

Did you remember Your Gift for the Giving Tree?

Patience is another one of those things many of us

struggle with. We want things to go according to our

plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and

fear. Through daily prayer we better align ourselves

with God’s will and His plan, which is far better than

anything we can come up with on our own.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Here’s a convenient way to support

St. Luke Parish with payments from

your bank or credit card account using your computer or

smart phone. Try it today at GiveCentral.org.

Enjoy a Christmas Program Close to Home this Tuesday It is with great pleasure that the 1st through 4th grade

students at St. Luke Parish School invite all parishioners

to their Christmas musical program, On This Christmas,

this Tuesday, December 17, in the school gym.

There is a matinee performance at 1:30 pm, which is

perfect timing for retirees, and a second presentation

at 6:30 pm. Families, friends and parishioners are

welcome to attend this special program and celebrate

this joyous season.

Join In Prayer with the Pope Pope Francis invites Catholics around the

world to remember a special intention

in their prayers each month.

Prayers in December are requested for

The Future of the Very Young:

That every country take the measures

necessary to prioritize the future of

the very young, especially those who

are suffering.

An Important Reminder About Receiving Communion

Please remember that, when you receive the host at

Communion, you are to immediately place it into

your mouth before you start walking away. It is part

of the Communion Ministers’ duty to see that each

person does so.

Also, it is not permitted to take a consecrated host to

another person, whether in church or elsewhere. Our

parish’s duly trained and authorized Ministers of

Care for the Sick and the Homebound are the only

individuals allowed to do this. Please contact the

rectory if you have a sick or homebound person who

wishes to receive Holy Communion. We will be happy

to arrange for a priest, a deacon or a Minister of

Care to bring Communion to them.

Thank you for your observance of these procedures

to ensure proper reverence and respect for the

Sacred Body of Christ.

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE • River Forest, IL

Thank You, Santa … and Elves! Once again, Breakfast with Santa was a jolly way to get into the

holiday spirit! It was a time for moms and dads to get photos of

their cute kids, as well as lots of special gift requests delivered

directly to Santa himself.

Many thanks to Marty Meehan, who organized the Men’s Club

volunteers, and all of Santa’s elves who helped out. “Especially

our chefs!” said Marty, “Ben Keith, Kelly Frank, Brian Van Meurs,

and Gary Jankovich.”

Thanks also to Ed Wolinski for setting up the Christmas hearth. It

really dressed things up and made Santa feel right at home!

Competitive Readers Three of our 5th grade students represented St. Luke

School in the Oak Park-River Forest Reading Olympics

at the Oak Park Library this past week. There were

12 teams competing, and our St. Luke students made it

to the second round! We are very proud of them and

can't wait to see how they will compete next spring!

St. Nick Comes Bearing Gifts Our beloved patron saint of children, St. Nicholas, took

time out from his very busy schedule to visit and pray

with the children of St. Luke School on his feast day!

He pointed out that the candy cane he gave us was

shaped like his staff. It is a reminder of the joy of sharing

and a call to be God’s selfless children as we wait for the

miracle of Jesus. He reminded us not to be blind to the

needs of others and to “choose kind.”

Who knew St. Nicholas was so tall?!

DECEMBER 15, 2019 • Third Sunday of Advent

Year-End Giving As you begin your end-of-year tax planning, look into the

advantages of the charitable tax deduction for gifts made

before December 31 and consider the variety of gift

options available to you. Your gift to our parish can make a

great difference to us and help you as well.

If you have appreciated securities, you may realize a tax

benefit by donating them or other assets with capital gains

to St. Luke Parish.

If you are 70½ or older and have a Required Minimum

Distribution (RMD) from your retirement plan, you may

benefit from a qualified charitable distribution.

The IRS requires individuals to begin taking annual minimum

distributions, AMD, from their traditional IRAs at age 70½.

Ordinarily you would be required to pay the tax on this

income. The IRA charitable rollover law, however, allows the

RMD to be used as a direct distribution to a charity without

being taxed. To take advantage of this tax break, you

must be 70½ or older and complete the transaction by

December 31. In addition, qualifying distributions to charity

are limited to $100,000 per person each year.

As always, work closely with your IRA custodian and tax

and legal advisors to determine how any particular

strategy will affect your overall tax situation. Please

contact our Director of Operations, Daniel Szymanski, at

the Parish Office at 708-435-8921 before December 31

to advise the parish of your gift so that it will qualify as a donation in 2019.

If you choose to make a cash donation, please prepare your check and mail it so that your envelope is

postmarked or received by the Church Office by December 31 to qualify as a gift in the year 2019. Please

also consider St. Luke Parish in your will or estate planning.

Thank you for including St. Luke Parish in your holiday and year-end giving.

As we prepare ourselves for the birth of our Lord and

reassess our priorities in life, it’s a good time to also

examine our appreciation of the many ministries in our

parish, and give prayerful consideration to

our financial stewardship. Your regular

contributions support the operation of the

church and all of our ministries, and they

are greatly appreciated.

For your convenience, St. Luke offers an

online giving system called GiveCentral,

which can make it easier for everyone to

make those contributions.

Online giving is a safe, convenient and easy

way to make gifts whether it’s for your

weekly Sunday offering or a one-time gift such as for

Christmas flowers for the church. Once you sign up, you

will be able to manage your giving preferences at any

time, and you won’t have to worry about

writing a check or carrying cash to church

each week.

Please, if you haven't already, sign up today

by visiting our secure online donation page at

www.givecentral.org/location/310. If you

need any assistance setting up your account,

or have any questions about how GiveCentral

works, please contact the director of

stewardship and development, Sheila Price, at

435-8927 or at [email protected].

New Grief Support Group St. Giles is sponsoring a GriefShare group, which is a

Christ-centered support group for anyone dealing with

the loss of a family member or dear friend.

The program, which will begin in January, allows a

caring group of people to walk alongside those working

through some of life’s most difficult experiences so no

one has to go through the grieving process alone.

The group will meet for 13 sessions, utilizing videos,

group discussion, and a personal workbook. The focus of

the program is to help participants initiate the closure

process to their loss so they can begin transitioning to a

new emotional and spiritual wholeness.

If you have questions or want more information, contact

the group organizers at [email protected]

or call 708-223-4912.
