Residents of Eersterust no longer feel safe in their homes.
Their anxiety follows a second shooting in the area within a week.
On Saturday, Vincent Catwright was shot dead in Waltloo, south of Eersterust.
Last Tuesday afternoon, a seven-year-old boy was wounded by a stray bullet.
A witness, Bernice Kaye, said the boy was playing in his backyard around 13:00 when the bullet grazed him.
“He was only slightly injured.”His grandmother said the family had been
referred for trauma counselling. Kaye said the shooters were after resident
Terverner Hartze, who had been targeted on numerous occasions before.
“His home is riddled with bullet holes.”
The police had launched a manhunt for the shooters, spokesperson Sam Shibambo said, adding that several shots had been fi red at a house in Andrew Gordon Avenue.
“The police were called to the scene and a search was issued for the suspect’s vehicle,” Kaye said.
“The vehicle was located at a house in Luluberg with several bullet holes in the bodywork.”
It was alleged the shooters had been driv-ing a maroon Opel Corsa.
No one has been arrested but the investi-gation was continuing.
“This has been the sixth random shooting in Andrew Gordon Avenue and the second person who got shot accidentally,” Kaye said.
She added the shootings had became worse the past two months.
“We no longer feel safe in our own homes. This has really become a scary envi-ronment to live in.”
Eersterust CPF member Henrie Godfrey said: “This has become a worrying issue in Eersterust.
“We are urgently looking for a solution.”Kaye said residents met last Thursday and
on Monday afternoon to pray for an end to the shootings.
“Members of the Eersterust Parents’ Association and senior police offi cers also attended.”
She said the praying sessions would con-tinue until the issue was resolved.
The police urged residents with informa-tion on the whereabouts of the shooters to call the Eersterust police immediately.
The police could not be reached for com-ment about Catwright’s murder.

On the night when Muslims around the world were celebrating Eid al-Adha, un-known people painted anti-Muslim slogans on the walls of three houses in Eersterust.
A Muslim woman from the area who wanted to remain anonymous said: “This was very disrespectful. I am disgusted, espe-cially because it was Eid the previous day.”
Eid al-Adha, Festival for the Sacrifi ce, is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrat-ed worldwide annually, and considered the holier of the two.
It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifi ce his son as an act of submission to God’s command, before God intervened sending his angel Jibra’il

(Gabriel) to inform him that his sacrifi ce had already been accepted.
In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for four days.
In the international (Gregorian) calendar, the dates vary from year to year, shifting about 11 days earlier each year.
Eersterust has a large Muslim community and Jamiat Ulama-council secretary-general, Moulana Ebrahim Bham condemned the vandalism.
“The basis of a peaceful society is toler-ance and peaceful coexistence and harmony. An incident like this does not help with peaceful coexistence. We will be discussing the matter with the community as an urgent matter,” he said.
Social cohesion advocate and journalist Yusuf Abramjee said: “I am shocked. This is disgusting and I call on residents to open criminal charges immediately. This hate speech must be stopped. The culprit/s need to be identifi ed, arrested and convicted.
“I also suggest that the SA Human Rights Commission and CRL Commission [Com-mission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Lin-guistic Communities] investigate this hate speech and intimidation.”
Abramjee spoke from Makkah (Mecca) where he was attending the annual Hajj.

With recent crime statistics released earlier this month, DA ward 54 councillor Elmarie Linde expressed concern about PokémonGo players.
“Pokémon Go players who play in parks and churches need to be more careful. Crime is in-creasing in the Moot,” she said.
According to crime statistics, more people are being assaulted with the intent of infl icting grievous harm in the Moot.
The number assaulted in the Hercules precinct over the past year rose by 49 compared to the previous year. This represented an
increase of 28,9%.Pokémon Go, released in July
this year, is a free-to-play Android and IOS game based on the hit console turn-based strategy game series Pokémon.
In the game you run around capturing Pokémon creatures‚which are monsters that you can train and use in battle with other
people‚ using Pokeballs.Health.com recently released
a few safety tips for Pokémon Goplayers.
Always keep in mind that Poké-mon Go is an “augmented reality” game. This means it is a game that is partly virtual and partly based in reality. Players need to go out into the real world to play.
Since players will be out in the real world, they should be cautious about safety, especially consider-ing they may be distracted by watching their phone screens.
“Always make sure your children understand they must be careful in public spaces,” the site advises.

No more Stormvoël plaza jobs protest expectedThe Stormvoël toll plaza operator Bakwena does not expect any further disruption to traffi c fl ow following a protest on Monday. A group of about 60 people caused a traffi c jam on the N1 freeway between 07:00 and 10:00, demanding jobs at the toll plaza. They later dispersed after the police arrived. Since then traffi c has been fl owing freely, said Bakwena’s Liam Clark. Bakwena said it had discussions with the protesters on Monday, and would meet them again on an undisclosed day this week, to see how it could assist. “It will be very disappointing if they go on another protest after we en-gaged with them on fi nding a solution to their concern,” said Clark, the operator’s com-mercial manager. The protest had resulted in heavy traffi c at the plaza in East Lynne on Monday. Photo: Ron Sibiya

Plans to bring rapid service delivery to Tshwane are underway, says Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga.
“The people of Tshwane deserve so much better than what the city delivered before.”
He told Rekord the metro needed to grow the economy in Tshwane by making it attrac-tive to investors – further reason to eliminate corruption and create jobs.
Msimanga had already cut out expensive catering for dinners, stopped the acquiring of luxury cars, opened the tender process to the public, gave new BMW’s to the Tshwane metro police. They would be used by their anti-hijack unit.
The 10 new BMW vehicles had been bought for members of the mayoral commit-tee by the previous ANC led administration with the assumption that it would retain Tshwane post the local government elec-tions. The vehicles had an estimated value of over R5 million.
“These were some of the cost-cutting measures implemented by the executive mayor since taking offi ce last month,” said mayoral spokesperson Matthew Gerstner.
Gerstner told Rekord that Msimanga was working hard to change the quality of service delivery.
“The mayor’s short-term plan was cutting all of the wasteful spending and ridding Tshwane of corrupt offi cials.”
He said Msimanga had set targets for his newly-appointed mayoral committee.
“Delivering for the people of Tshwane is the mayors’ priority in terms of better deliv-ery of services.”
Gerstner said long-term plans would see people in jobs, secure houses and cleaner communities.

“The mayor is adamant that the new council needs to turn around the Tshwane metro fi rst by getting the fi nances in order for the city to be fi nancially sustainable and to deliver services.”
Affi rming the metro inherited by the newly-elected administration was virtu-ally bankrupt, Gerstner said there were no reasons Tshwane could not become an eco-
nomic, industrial, technological, logistics, processing and exporting hub, which would create jobs for the people.
“Drastic action of criminal charges against offi cials of the previous adminis-tration for corruption and fraud in the city hall upgrades of over R90 million had been lodged.”
The mayor would soon be laying more
corruption charges against very senior mem-bers of the previous ANC administration, Gerstner said. Msimanga had also introduced new measures to minimise the possibility of more corruption with city tenders.
He had opened up the tender process to the public to bring transparency in tender al-locations, allowing the people of Tshwane to see where their money was being spent.

Jy kán ’n nuwe grafskrif skryfTerwyl ek verlede week by ’n begrafnis na ’n huldeblyk luister, dink ek hieraan:

ple”?
metro daagliks miljoene liters water vermors.

The internet defi nes a pet as a domestic or tamed animal or bird kept for companion-ship or pleasure.
By this defi nition, a cat that enters my yard is not a pet, as it is not kept and thus becomes a pest.
I have chickens as my pets and three chicks have been brutally murdered in the last year by the stray cats in the
area.I believe the legal argument is every
man’s home is his castle and I will use any and all force at my disposal to protect my castle, family and pets.
Keep your bloody irritating, annoying and useless cats in your yard they will die in mine.

verskil maak in hierdie wêreld.Baie dankie.

It may not be as exciting or as dramatic as news events need to be, but things will just go from bad to worse if not addressed.
What follows relates to putting a live frog in a pot of cold water and then slowly but surely boiling the water.
The frog becomes so complacent that it gets boiled live with-out realising it should leave the pot.
We live in a bless-ed environment with tree-lined suburbs and greenery all around us.
But this is spoilt by reckless signage that is in contravention of city bylaws.
Nothing is being done. Beautiful trees are being plastered with all kind of signs to advertise some or other service.
In Old Johannesburg Road, a half-a-kilo-metre of once beautiful blue gum trees are littered with red signs.
Irene trees are now being littered with
signs nailed to the trees, including the area near the once-beautiful fourway stop.
Some food for thought: there was a time that Irene station held the prize for the most beautifully kept railway station in South
Africa. Then there are the
council-owned lamp posts – all abused by illegal signs, some of which are blatantly offensive.
Each sign has the contact details of the perpetrator.
All the council needs to do is to call the culprits and give
them 24 hours to remove their signs or face prosecution.
That is not so hard to do and will take no less than an hour of an offi cial’s time.
Please may we request that our new councillors take this matter up with urgencyand concern since complacency is destroying
our environment.

The news that the Vaal Dam water level was critically low brought home the message that we are in the middle of a drought.
This time last year, it was at around 74% of capacity.
The dam is one of South Africa’s biggest and supplies around 12 million citizens and, most importantly, the industrial powerhouse of the country, Gauteng.
If there is no rain in the next few weeks and no visible decrease, by at least 15%, in consumption, punitive water restrictions could be introduced.
If domestic water use was reduced by 15% and agricultural and mining use by 20%, “it might help to stabilise the
situation”.Residents and businesses in Gauteng will
have to drastically reduce water consump-tion voluntarily.
Already there are restrictions on washing of vehicles, watering of gardens, golf greens and sport fi elds with a hose.
A behavioural is needed if we are to deal with this predicament.
We have to make lifestyle changes to reduce water consumption and educate our-selves on alternatives such as water harvest-ing and re-use.
Municipal workers also have to play their part to curb and repair water leaks.

Following the success of the Discovery show at Eersterust Civic Centre in May earlier this year, the Heritage show will take place at the same venue on 30 Sep-tember.
The Discovery show was hosted for primary pupils from Eersterust.
“It was a huge success and we would like to thank the schools for sending their pupils. It was a real eye-opener for them,” organiser of the two events, Casper Bicks said.
“Sadly, after the Discovery show we realised our children did not know a lot about South African history.”
With the follow-up Heritage show Bicks invites all parents to join.
Mini-displays of South African heri-tage sites will be on display. These mini displays were hand-crafted by Bicks.
Displays of Freedom Park, Cradle of Humankind, Dinokeng Game Park, Voor-trekker monument, Apartheid museum and the Red Open Bus will be on display.
“There will also be a big screen dis-playing these sites in more detail.”
At the Heritage show, free tickets to the heritage sites will be up for grabs.
“Now pupils can visit the sites during the year and a few tour busses will be arranged for the kids.”
According to Bicks, the spin-to-win wheel will be the show’s main attraction.
For more information Bicks can be contacted on 071-724-062.

What’s on
The popular character of Bridget Jones is back.
She could be seen on the big screen from last Friday in Bridget Jones’s Babyin Nu Metro Woodlands and Menlyn Park in Pretoria and other cinemas.
Aged 43, Bridget Jones (Renée Zell-weger) is struggling with the trials of life, not the least of which is her break-up with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).
Bridget found that her “happily ever after” hadn’t quite gone ac-cording to plan.
Forty-some-thing and single again, she de-cides to focus on her job as a top news producer, and surround her-self with friends old and new.
Pushingforward and working to fi nd fulfi llment in other aspects of her life seem to do won-ders until her love life comes back from the dead when she meets a dashing and handsome American named Jack (Patrick Dempsey) – the suitor who is everything
Mr Darcy is not. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. What could possibly go wrong?
Bridget discovers that she is preg-nant… Now, the befuddled mum-to-be, her loyal entourage of friends and eccentric co-workers, as well as her amused no-nonsense gynaecologist, must work out if the proud father is Mark or
Jack. Directed by Sharon Maguire and written by Helen Fielding, Dan Mazer and Emma Thomp-son, BridgetJones’s Baby is the third fi lm in the Bridget Jones-franchise.
This new comedy delivers on all fronts with the hallmark qualities fans love and which
have turned Bridget Jones into one of the most iconic, touching and funniest characters of modern cinema.
Rekord is giving away one double ticket. Visit Rekord’s website and fi ll in the form to take part in the competition.

House hunting can be a daunting task; buying a house is a sig-nifi cant investment and the last thing any new owner wants is to suffer from buyer’s remorse.
So what should people look out for when viewing a prop-erty?
Location, location, locationBruce Swain, MD of Leap-
frog Property Group, says: “Location remains the most important factor when buying a prop-erty.”
“Theold adage of rather buyingthe worst house in the best area, as opposedto the besthouse in the worst area is reallytrue. A property’s location will in large part determine its value as well as its eventual re-sale value, making it imperative to buy in the right area.”
If the house is in the right area it is time to start looking at the property itself.
Bathrooms and kitchens“The main selling points are
normally the bathrooms and kitchen, which can be quite expensive to renovate,” says Swain.
“As such, well maintained, properly fi tted kitchens and bath-rooms are strong selling points.”
Swain says it is very impor-tant for buyers to take their time
in these spaces – open the taps, test the water pressure, switch on the lights, test the gas stove. Buyers are also entitled to ask questions about plumbing and electricity and to fi nd out when last any work was done in these areas.
Stains and cracks Water stains, discolouration
caused by mould, and large cracks in the walls can all be indications of bigger problems.
“It is possi-ble the ownersmay have resolvedthecausesbehindthe stains andcracks, butbuyerswouldbe wise to ask
questions and even include proof of corrections in the sales agreement, should they decide to purchase the property,” says Swain.
The garden“While great garden main-
tenance is not essential to a property sale, the state of a gar-den tells buyers a lot about the current owner and how they care for the property,” says Swain.
“If the garden is neglected, a buyer could ask themselves what other maintenance is also being ignored.”
ParkingMost home owners are also
vehicle owners and secure park-
What to look for when you are house hunting
In the current competitive real estate mar-ket, sellers need all the help they can get to make their home shine and stand out from the crowd.
However this does not mean that they need to break the bank with expensive updates.
Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, says there is a number of cost-effective ways to make a home more appealing.
Often just subtle, reasonably inexpen-sive updates can go a long way to increas-ing the property’s appeal and give the seller the competitive edge.
The updates will add to sellers’ con-fi dence when putting their home on the market, with the added benefi t of possibly pushing up the sale price.
Goslett provides some low-cost updates sellers could make before listing their home:
Do a walk-through The initial step is to visit each room and
make a checklist of items that need to be either repaired or replaced.
It is best to be as objective as possible, so it might be helpful to have a friend or family member provide a second opinion.
Look for outdated styles, bold patterns and colours, dated fi xtures, unfi nished projects and over-cluttered cupboards and countertops.
When looking at these features consider what elements showcase the home in its best possible light and what does not.
The next step is to develop a budget and diarise a date make those improvements.
Incorporate contemporary styles Each home and style will be as indi-
vidual as the owner. While you may love a
certain look, be it ultramodern, the major-ity of buyers may not.
Ideally it is best to incorporate modern elments into the home, but going for a transitional style that hits the sweet spot between traditional elegance and contem-porary cool.
The idea is to tick the “just right” box – not too cold or formal and not too fussy.
A transitional style blends the comfort and warmth of traditional design with the clean lines and muted tones of the modern look.
First impressions count According to research it takes just 15
seconds for a buyer to decide whether they like a house or not so ensure it leaves the right mark.
An impression of the home is not only formed by what buyers see inside, but starts from outside the property walls.
Buyers driving past will decide whether they want to have a look at the property by the way it looks from the street.
Kerb-appeal is vitally important and vastly contributes to the success of attract-ing buyers to the home.
Start maintenance from the pavement outside the property and work your way in.
Basic improvements such as exterior painting, cutting the grass and planting some fl owers can tremendously improve the look of a home from the outside.
Special attention should also be given to the driveway, ensuring that it is weeded and in good repair.
Pay attention the kitchen and bathrooms As some of the most frequently used
areas in any home, the kitchen and bath-rooms will be a focal point for buyers.
Extra effort should be made to ensure
Inexpensive home updates that pack a punch
that these areas are fresh and looking great.Things such as stained shower stalls
and toilets, broken or missing grout, leaky taps or dated cabinet hardware are easily replaced at minimum cost.
If replacement is not an option, have shower stalls or bathtubs professionally resprayed for a fresh look.
A new coat A fresh coat of paint is a great way to
revitalise the home with a reasonably mini-
mal investment.Paint can drastically transform a space
and can be used in a variety of applications on walls, doors, cabinets, fi xtures and even tiles.
Pick neutral and muted colours.“By making these small updates before
listing a property, sellers are giving them-selves the best possible chance of setting their home apart and achieving their asking price,” says Goslett.
ing is a big advantage for any property.
If the home is in a sectional title development it is important to establish how many parking spaces/garages are allocated to the property to avoid disputes later on.
“At the end of the day it is up to the buyer to decide which property they want to buy, but taking note of the above will go a long way to ensuring the property they buy is sound and will offer a good return on investment.”

The Olympic rower, John Smith, has never been shy to take on big challenges. It should be no surprise that he has decided to move up a weight category as part of his preparation for the 2020 Games in the Tokyo.
Smith (Tuks/hpc), who won gold medals at the Olympic Games and the World Championships as a lightweight rower, readily admits he is in for a tough challenge. He will have to gain 20 kilograms and needs to become stronger.
One of the reasons why Smith decided to make a career change is that he is 1.87 metres tall and it has become more diffi cult for him to keep his weight under 70kg over the last two years.
“I was beginning to feel like a boxer who is forever battling to make it at the weigh-in. To be honest, I never felt at my strongest at 70 kilograms but that was the weight I had to race at. You cannot change the number.”
According to Smith very few rowers in the world have success-fully managed to make the transi-

Tuks netball remains unbeaten in CoetzenburgTuks kept their unbeaten streak alive when they beat UJ 66-42 in the Varsity Netball tournament at the Coetzenburg indoor centre on Monday afternoon.
The Pretoria girls sprinted out to an early 10-1 lead and whenever UJ managed to fi nd the basket, Tuks would reply with two or three quick goals. The fi rst quarter score was 19-6 for Tuks and the trend continued with Tuks leading 24-8, 30-12 and eventu-ally 39-16 at the halftime break.
After the interval UJ tried to slow down the game but Tuks cleverly used their power play just before the break
to up the tempo and also collect the bo-nus point. Despite UJ having their best passage of play, the scoreline of 54-28 meant that Tuks had all but wrapped up the result with 15 minutes left.
UJ rolled the dice and called their power play to close the gap on Tuks. They scored three goals but also con-ceded one to Tuks, to fi nish the power play on 58-35.
Credit must be given to UJ, who never gave up and continually im-proved throughout the match, and scored more goals in every quarter. The only potential chink in the Tuks armour
is that they allow their opponents to rally at the end of the match.
They will want to be more clinical in a potential semifi nal match.
The Tuks team is still at the top of the log, courtesy of their incredible full house of 25 log points and with games against the Madibaz and VUT remain-ing.
The Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria is looking set to host a Varsity Netball fi nal.
UJ will face Kovsies to decide whether Bloemfontein will take part in the semifi nals.

tion from lightweight to heavyweight.“I know of only one or two rowers
who were able to do so but that is not going to stop me from trying to make it work.
I understand the challenge and believe that if I put my mind to it nothing will stop me from becoming a competitive rower in the heavier category.
“The problem about moving up a
weight category is that there are no limits. Everybody who competes as a lightweight weighs 70 kilograms. This means the playing fi eld is level as far as power output is concerned. In the heavier category there is no limit. This means that rowers can really bulk up and become stronger and more power-ful.
“I already managed to gain 12 kilograms since the Olympic Games
in Rio. My goal is to weigh 90 kilo-grams, but it is not only about get-ting heavier, you have to become stronger as well.
“I am doing a lot of strength and conditioning exercises in the gymnasium at the moment. I need to become stronger to be able to up my power outage when rowing.
“The one thing that counts in my favour is my very sound technique which enables me to row quite ef-fi ciently.
“But it will be a tough challenge to crack a seat in one of our two heavyweight crews. Lawrence Brit-tain and Shaun Keeling won silver in the men’s pairs at the Olympic Games, while Vince Breet, Jake Green, Jonty Smith and David Hunt just missed out on winning the bronze medal in the men’s fours.”
As a lightweight Smith was part of the men’s lightweight fours who won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. At the 2014 World Cham pionships Smith and James Thompson won the gold medal in the lightweight men’s double sculls.

Disadvantaged children from Soshanguve and Diepsloot (Centurion) will be part of a new initiative in which they will be exposed to hockey in the next few weeks.
The stalwart and world-class player from Pretoria, Marithy Pienaar, is back in the Springbok Women’s Sevens team after a long absence due to a broken hand.

The Currie Cup semifi nals have begun to take shape following a number of telling results this weekend.
In the Currie Cup Premier Division the Free State Cheetahs became the fi rst team to cement their semifi nal place.
The Cheetahs opened up the weekend’s action last Thursday with a 37-29 victory against the Golden Lions in Bloemfontein, which stretched their unbeaten run to six matches – a feat they last achieved in the
2009 season – to hold onto the No 1 spot on the log table and secure a semifi nal berth.
The Sharks, Blue Bulls and Griquas remained in positions two to four on the log table respectively, but the Kimberley side’s defeat against the Blue Bulls forced them six points back.
The Blue Bulls recovered from a slow start against Griquas to outscore their op-ponents seven tries to two for a bonus-point 57-20 victory. Griquas struck fi rst with a
stunning long-range try by Alshaun Bock and a penalty goal, but the hosts hit back with three back-to-back tries before the sides exchanged penalty goals, which pushed the Blue Bulls 24-13 ahead at the break.
Missed tackles by Griquas cost them in the second half, as the home team displayed skillful play, effective support and strong scrummaging. This earned them four more tries, while Griquas could only add one with their
Currie Cup semi for Blue Bulls?
To break 20 seconds in the 200 metres will be a major goal for Akani Simbine (Tuks/hpc) next year.
“The question is not whether Akani is capable of doing so, but when he will do it,” said his coach, Werner Prinsloo.
“I personally thought he would be in contention to win a bronze medal in the 200 metres at the Olympic Games in Rio but unfortunately, due to various circumstances, things did not work out as we had hoped.”
When Simbine ran 20.16s in Budapest shortly before the Olympic Games, he set a new best time in the 200 metres. Accord-ing to Prinsloo the plan is for Simbine to compete in the 100 metres as well as the 200 metres at next year’s World Championships in London.
“I don’t think we will have to make drastic changes to his training programme to accomplish this. We will stick to the things we know work for him. However, I would like Akani to compete in the 200 metres next year. The important thing is not to overdo things.
“Akani did not race in as many races in 2016 as he did in 2015. I am a fi rm believer in the concept of the right race at the right time.”
The Tuks/hpc athlete can rightfully claim to be one of the top sprinters in the 100 me-tres at the moment.
His breakthrough race was in Budapest where he ran a time of 9.89s, the fi fth fastest time in the world. Since then Simbine has not run one bad race.
He fi nished fi fth in the Olympic fi nal and was second at both the Paris and Zurich Diamond League Meetings, fi nishing third overall in the Diamond League standings.
Prinsloo said there is an excellent chance that Simbine will again train with the likes of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake in Jamaica next year.
Asked what he thinks led to Simbine establishing himself as one of the top 100 metres sprinters in the world, Prinsloo said:
“At the beginning of the season my goal, as coach, was to help Akani to be faster out of his starting blocks. I also spend time working on the fi rst phase (1 to 30 metres) of his race. In the past he tended to be just off the leader’s pace, which meant that he had to work so much harder over the second part of the race. Once Akani mastered this there was basically no stopping him.”
Prinsloo said there is an excellent chance that Simbine will again train with the likes of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake in Jamaica next year.
“While I was at the Games, Gus Mills (coach) asked when they will see Akani again. He defi nitely benefi tted from training in Jamaica. It certainly helped to improve his start and another positive spinoff was that he had the opportunity to befriend Usain and Yohan.”

INSIDE Currie Cup semi for Bulls?
Koos Venter

Honour for success of Tuks hpc medallists at Rio Games The University of Pretoria honoured its High Performance Centre (hpc) Olympic athletes last week.
Cheryl de la Rey, vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Pretoria (UP), said the achievements of SA ath-letes came at a time when South Africa was facing its fi rst serious turning point since 1994.
“There are many fractures and fault lines in our society which also affect our universities,” she said.
“We have seen what began as a unifi ed rally against the rising cost of university education morph into divisive and destructive protests.
“In a context such as this, sport can really play an important role of contribu-ting positively towards social cohesion and national pride.”
She said when athletes were successful South Africans could see their diverse society coming together.
De la Rey said during the recent Games, Olympians became symbols of who South Africans were and what they were capable of as a nation when united in the desire for achievement.
“Each and every Olympian can testify to the challenges of making choices such as practising and trai ning for hours instead of, perhaps, socialising with friends.”
De la Rey urged the Olympians to share their stories, especially by telling their fellow athletes about the impor-tance of discipline, sacrifi ce and focus.

“Our country’s youth might just take note when their heroes tell them that suc-cess cannot be achieved without hard work
and personal responsibility. “Quite a few of our athletes had to com-
bine the challenge of full-time study and
preparing for the Olympic Games. “In doing so, they set an excellent ex-
ample of maintaining a healthy balance between mind and body and the holistic development towards which we strive at the university,” she said.
De la Rey has good reason to be proud. Since 1992, the year South Africa was readmitted to participate in interna-tional sports, students of the University of Pretoria have been making South Af-ricans proud with their exploits at major sporting events.
The recent Olympic Games in Rio confi rmed again the truth of this state-ment.
Of the 10 medals won by South Africa, three were due to the persever-ance of the Tuks/hpc athletes and their coaches.
At the previous Games in London (2012) the Tuks/hpc athletes won three of South Africa’s six medals.
Since 1992, nearly a third of the 35 medals won at the Olympic Games were due to the never-give-up attitude of the Tuks athletes and coaches.
Shaun Keeling, silver medallist in ro-wing, is an example.
He admitted to nearly quitting in 2010 and 2012 but in the end his hunger for success prevailed.
“It is has been a long and sometimes hard journey but in the end every second was worth it. The feeling on an Olympic podium to receive your medal is inde-scribable. It was a dream come true.”
