The Birmingham News, April 10, 1987 had an article entitled Earth’s Centre Hotter Than Sun’s Surface, scientists say. I stoppedat the new traff ic light just after theHeidelberg Mall and was amazed to see asmall car RACE across the red light on hisway to Nigel. I guess he must have beendoing at least 110Km/hour. Then the nextday on my way to the church off ice Istopped at a 4-way stop and a cyclist roadstraight across the road without stopping.I watched him cross in front of me (he evennodded to me) and as I sat there trying togather my thoughts of what had justhappened I wondered what the headlinesin the newspaper would have been -“MINISTER RIDES INTO CYCLIST” andI would have had a month of Sundaystrying to explain that it was not my fault.So here is my point for this week. Wechoose to do things and often do not thinkof the results or consequences of ouractions. There are so many people who Iam seeing at the moment who haveproblems because they have CHOSEN todo things and have not thought throughthe consequences of what their actions willcause.

I wonder what the man who raced throughthe traffic lights would say if he had anaccident or if the police stopped himbecause he we through a red light. Iwonder what the cyclist would have saidif I bumped him. The sad truth is that manypeople blame the innocent person whiledoing things that they should not bedoing. If you constantly get drunk andyour partner wants to leave you – do notblame your partner because it is a resultof what you are choosing to do. If youhave an accident because you werebreaking the law then be big enough tosay that you were in the wrong and do nottry to put the blame on someone else.At the end of the day I would like tochallenge everyone to think of what theyare doing and think of the result of youraction – in that way I believe that we willbe able to live a happier and more caringlife.

participation with the immediate and
surrounding communities.
A R50-billion Transnet tender to build
1064 locomotives was awarded to four (4)
foreign companies and not only threatens
the exclusion of local jobs, but also
education, training and skills development
for the semi-skilled and not skilled at all.
This massive multi-billion rand project
must not only be about prof its for the
greedy and filthy rich. It must provide the
much needed skills and experience to the
poor, unemployed and employed says:

GRENUPP rejects with contempt the Party
Political Public Draft Scoping Report for
the proposed PRASA NIGEL Manufac-
turing Plant, by GIBB Engineering and
Architect on behalf of Passenger Rail
Agency of South Africa (PRASA) that was
done in secret with a selected few, with
Political connections.
GRENUPP is also very concerned about
the usual ‘double talk and triple thinking”
of the government, were they one moment
say: they as a shareholder , the state will
ensure that Transnet will prioritize South
African companies with signif icant
capacity in the production and
manufacturing of rolling stock and
locomotives in the state-owned company’s
infrastructure investment programme.
The next moment they award the tender to
four (4) forgeing – owned companies with
BEE partners that have no rail experience
or capacity to manufacture rolling stock
equipment. Transnet does that in the full
view of companies in South Africa with
experience and a long history of rail
rolling stock.
GRENUPP as a Community Based
Organization want to make sure and
ensure that:
Transnet’s Investment programme will not
repeat what happened in the early 1990’s
when the former Dunnattor Military Air-
base, where the PRASA Plant will be build,
was earmarked to be renovated and turned
into a air Freight, relieving the former Jan
Smuts Airport, and the money meant for
the project disappeared into thin air.
The building of the one (1) of the four (4)
New Generation Prisons in Nigel ten (10)
years ago, went up in smoke, after the
billions of rands budgeted for all four (4)
Prisons, was without any consultation and
permission, all of a sudden and out of the
Smack like another arms dealblue re-channeled into the renovations of
so-called Centers of Excellent. The
billions were simply stolen, f inish and
klaar.
The massive Consol Glass factory in
Pretoriusstad Industrial site – Nigel that
was build by outsiders and employed, in
the full view of 0% income for local
households in the Greater Nigel.
GRENUPP learnt that the four (4) foreign
companies awarded the R201-billion
tender earmarked for Transnet Freight Rail
(TFR) is: China South Rail (CSR) ZhuZhou
Electric Locomotive, China North Rail
(CNR) Rolling Stock, Bombardier: a
manufacturer of planes and trains that is
headquartered in Montreal, Canada and
the trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange,
General Electric: a US General
multinational corporation incorporated in
New York and headquartered in
Connecticut in America.
South African Rail and Locomotive
manufacturers in which NUMSA
organizers in such as Naledi Rail
Engineering, Union Carriage & Wagon
(UCW), known as Commuter Transport
and Locomotive Engineering (CTLE),
Wictra Holding, RRL Grinod and Electro
Motive Diesel (EDM) have been excluded
from the deal under the guise of
strengthening Transnet Engineering (TE)
This multi-billion rand tender awarded to
foreign companies and the envisaged
implementation thereof by floating due
processes, and not involving immediate
and surrounding communities and workers
goes against goverments vision of re-
industrializing South Africa and building
a manufacturing base in the country.
GRENUPP and both the immediate and
surrounding communities, e.g.
unemployed men, women and the youth
including workers in the sector will not
allow nepotism, cronyism, jobs for pals,
fronting and elite enrichment of the
selected usual habitual tenderpreneurs.

The South African National Editors’Forum has condemned the behaviour ofpolice and some members of the publicin the ongoing unrest in Soweto.In the f irst incident three Soweto policeofficers allegedly forced Sapa journalistMpho Raborife to delete pictures from hercellphone on Thursday. In the secondincident a reporter for Eyewitness News,Leeto Khoza, was hit on the head by a rockand is presently in hospital.Raborife drove past three Somali-ownedshops in Dobsonville on her way to workwhen she noticed three police vehiclesoutside the shops. Cognisant of the unrestthat have occurred in parts of the townshipthis week, Raborife stopped to investigatewhat was happening at the scene. She sawtwo men loading groceries into a van andtook pictures with her cellphone. She thenleft. The police started following Raborifeand pulled her over. They told her shewasn’t allowed to take pictures withouttheir permission.Raborife showed the officers her press cardand told them she was fully within herrights to take photos in a public space. Onepolice officer said she wasn’t allowed totake pictures and “leak them to the media”.After threatening to take her to the police

This particularly as it comesdespite promises by senior police officers,including the national commissioner, thatsuch illegal behavior would be stopped.Khoza was covering the unrest inMeadowlands Zone 5, Soweto when he wasattacked by an angry crowd late Thursdayafternoon. As protestors were throwingrocks at police and shop owners, theyturned their attention on journalistsclaiming they would reveal their identities.Khoza was hit on the head with a rock andlost consciousness for some time. He is stillin hospital receiving intensive care.Sanef calls on the public to respect the rightof journalists to do their work and toactually protect them against those whomay not wish for the truth to be known.Sanef also calls on community leaders toinculcate understanding of the role of themedia within their communities.
