Important tool for harmonized generic terminology at a levelsuitable for global communication

Uses a numerical coding scheme, where quantities areclassified on basis of three fundamental criteria Economic &Social Viability (E), Field Project Status and Feasibility (F), andGeological Knowledge (G)

Each criteria is further subdivided in to categories & sub-categories: combination of these leads to formation ofclasses (codes).

Standards) - An international advisory body without legal authority• International Standard for reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral

Resources and Mineral Reserves• Objective- To promote best practice in the international public

reporting of Mineral Exploration Results, Mineral Resources andMineral Reserves.

• Members- Australia, Canada, Chile, Europe, UK, Russia, South Africa& United States

• Potential Members- Argentina, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Peru,Philippines, Turkey, Scandinavia & Columbia

• Agreement with UNFC to provide commodity specific specificationsfor solid minerals

• UNFC Allows for non economic mineralization whereas CRIRSCOdoes not address all mineralisation that may be relevant to otherpurposes such as national inventories

Issues in Brief• UNFC-1997 and UNFC-2009 are not fully aligned requiring a

bridging document to be mapped to UNFC 2009 eitherdirectly or through CRIRSCO

• Major changes in the definitions• More Granularity 26 Codes than earlier 10 codes Means more confusion Requires further understanding and consultation among all

stake holders More case studies to understand the system and its

applicability Training to trainers for imparting training at grass root level• Disconnect between academia and industry as UNFC not a

The Road map

• Setting up a committee to evolve a bridging document fortransiting to UNFC 2009, CRIRSCO and TAG may be associated,so that a bridging document may be approved byTAG/Bureau.

• Take up pilot projects and case studies.

• Develop training modules for UNFC 2009

• Training for the trainers

• Introduction of UNFC in the curriculum at Under Graduatelevel including Standard syllabus

• Promotion of UNFC 2009 through workshops, conferences,meetings & articles etc.
