#112 #113

Relationships bring a lot of happiness and meaning into our lives. Relationships can be healthybut they can also be unhealthy. What do you consider to be some characteristics of a healthyrelationship?

Healthy relationships actually take work! Whatare some ways you can work at yourrelationships to keep them strong andhealthy over time?

One important element to a healthyrelationship is giving space. That means thatit’s okay to spend time apart and with otherfriends. What might the opposite of that looklike in an unhealthy relationship? How couldyou ask for space?

Effective Communication#116

#117 #118

Communication is how we talk, share ideas, and connectwith others. When we communicate our ideas, it’simportant to be assertive. That means clearly andconfidently sharing our thoughts and needs. Assess yourlevel of assertiveness by completing the ratings. Rateeach statement from 0-10 with 0 being completely nottrue and 10 being completely true. Consider what areasyou could improve upon to be more assertive.

Part of communicating with others is holdinga conversation on a topic. Make a list ofconversation topics you could bring up with agroup of friends. Try to think of topics youshould share a lot of information about!

Part of communicating is also listening! To bean active listener, you should watch who isspeaking to you, work hard to stay focused, and visualize they are saying to you. Whatmight that look like with a friend? What aboutin math class?

ASSERTIVE STATEMENT

#1 I can ask for help and information from others.

#2 I can say “no” without feeling guilty.

#3 I can share my beliefs without worrying what others will think of me.

#4 I am comfortable disagreeing with someone else in a respectful manner.

#5 I can express my feelings to others.

#119One strategy for asserting your feelings in a healthy way is to use an I-statement. An I-statement often sounds like: “I feel ____________ when _________ because _________.” Forexample, you might say: “I feel nervous when I read aloud because I don’t want to make amistake in front of others.” This is an open way to share what you’re feeling without attackingor blaming anyone else. Practice making your own I-statements with a variety of feelings you’vefelt recently!

#120Healthy and effective communication is a two-way street! Create a dialogue between two peoplebelow making sure they both talk on topic, share ideas, ask questions, and take turns.

Working with Others#121

#122 #123

Learning to work well with others is an important skill because it is something we use all thetime! Come up with your own set of “Group Ground Rules” that identify how you should work wellwith others. Then, share your list with a friend and choose the top five rules together.

Make a list of all the times and examples youmight need to work with others. Then, talkwith a partner and add to your list.

Imagine you are in a science lab group. Howcan you show that you are working well withothers?

#125Being a team player is someone who works well to do their fair share of the work and supportsthe other members of the team, too. Give an example of a time you were a team player duringan activity, sport, or group project. What did you do and why was it important to be a teamplayer?

Compromising#126

#127 #128

Compromising is a settlement that two people make when they both agree meet in the middle. Itis a healthy way to solve problems. An example of a compromise might be: You want to watchyour television show but your little brother wants to play his videogame. You can agree to lethim play first for 20 minutes and then you can watch your show after. You are letting him gofirst, but you are both getting what you need. Why can compromise be a healthy way to solvedisagreements?

You are working with a partner on a scienceproject. You want to write a report but yourpartner wants to do a presentation. How canyou come to a compromise?

Imagine you are hanging out with a friend. You want to go outside and ride bikes butthey want to stay in and play games. Howcan you compromise?

#129You can compromise with adults, too, sometimes. It’s still important to remember to berespectful, of course! Imagine you want to go to the movies with your friends but your parentswant you to finish all your homework first. You know there isn’t enough time to finish all yourhomework before the movie starts. What can you suggest to your parents that can help youcompromise?

#130Come up with your own problem situation between you and a friend. Then, identify a way youcould compromise. Explain how that compromise works both for you and your friend.

Making Up For Mistakes#136

#137

We all make mistakes sometimes. That is just part of life! You can’t go back in time but you canwork towards making up for your mistakes. The most important part of learning how to make upfor your mistakes is taking responsibility for them. What does it mean to take responsibility or“own” your mistakes? Why is that important? Give an example.

Apologizing is an important part of knowing how to make up for mistakes. A sincere apologydoesn’t fix everything, but it can be a helpful start to let someone else know that you are trulysorry and want to make changes going forward. Make up your own situation that you might be sorryfor. It could be calling out in class while your teacher was teaching, saying something rude to afriend, not following your parent’s directions, or anything else. Use that situation to fill in yoursincere apology. Then, read it to a partner.

Your Response

I’m sorry for…

This was wrong because…

In the future, I will…

Will you forgive me? (give the other person time to take in and consider your apology)

© 2018 Pathway 2 Success

#138Sam told Greg a secret and asked him tokeep it private. The next day, Greg slippedup and told the lunch table. Greg feelsawful. What can he do?

#140Sometimes we can work towards making up for our mistakes by fixing what is broken. Thatmeans if you made a mess while you were mad, clean it. If you took something withoutpermission, return it. Read each situation below and determine how you can fix it.

#139Reflect upon a time that you had to makeup for a mistake. How did you make up forthe mistakes you made? Was it effective? Is there anything you’d change now? Whyor why not?

How You Can Fix ItYou skipped out on all your

chores so you could hang out with a friend.

You ripped pages of a friend’s favorite book while

you were borrowing it

You left a mess at the lunch table and your friends had to

clean up after you.
