Once upon a time, our relationships depended on…

• Who we met at a bar

• Who showed up to a cocktail party

• Who was already in our Rolodex

But our relationships were too important to suffer the fate of randomness once we had the technology to manage them…

Jake • First-generation

college student • Considered dropping

out his first semester • But his advisor took

him under his wing • Graduated early with

honors

Christian • Both parents went to

college • Was “Undecided” his

first semester • Only saw his advisor

once a year • Dropped out and lost

a merit scholarship

Pretty clear how this turns out, right?

Mentors and professors matter, too

Too bad only a tiny minority of learners experience great

relationships like these across the board

But right now, they’re:

• Assigned based on who’s next in the queue; or just left up to the learner

• Hit-or-miss when it comes to quality

• Ultimately random - maybe you’ll find a great mentor, maybe you won’t

• Higher Education: Loses $16B+ a year due to a 45% dropout rate

• K-12: 1.2M students drop out annually, costing the US economy $154B in lifetime income

• Corporate: Weak relationships are 2 of the Top 3 reasons workers leave, costing 20% of salary to replace

• Military: Veteran unemployment is 20% greater than the national rate, due in part to the lack of support on campus

That’s why the time is ripe for Learning Relationship Management (LRM) -

technology that purposefully ensures every learner has the right relationships to succeed.

• Full transparency into the 3 P’s most correlated with learning success:

• Purpose - Does the learner have a clear goal?

• Path - Does the learner have a concrete plan to achieve it?

• People - Does the learner have the right network to reach their goal?

• The tools to provide the right support for every challenge:

• Learning Apps to overcome gaps in study skills or career knowledge

• Mentors to motivate and connect learners to opportunity

• Communities to help learners network with like-minded peers

Learners can:

• Message their coach and mentors via SMS

• Find additional mentors or bring along their own

• Build relationships with employers

• Become mentors to the next generation

In less than a year, 20 leading institutions have piloted LRM:

From a Wells Fargo Securities report on American Public University System’s pilot of LRM:

Students using the system have completed the enrollment and credit transfer process at higher rates,

with lower withdrawals, and have exhibited higher GPAs in their initial courses. Based on the results of the pilot,

the company plans to offer the product to all new students and eventually all students.

• Southern New Hampshire University has built their own LRM system, Motivis, set to launch in early 2015

• Meanwhile, traditional players like Blackboard and Hobsons are releasing new tools focused on the outcomes that LRM drives – e.g., student retention

• And Salesforce itself has a popular higher education offering that can be customized to provide LRM-like functionality (e.g., Motivis is built on their platform)

Once schools, companies, and organizations see how they can purposefully manage their learners’ relationships, it will become unacceptable to leave critical support to chance.
