INTRODUCTION

AWS Elemental Live is a massively parallel video processing system that provides content distributors with video and audio encoding for live streaming to new media platforms. With unprecedented density and support for adaptive bit rate protocols, HTML5 and multiple HD streams, AWS Elemental Live delivers the high-quality, high-efficiency performance required for current and future live streaming applications for any device. An intuitive web-based interface simplifies workflow, providing real-time controls and an easy-to-manage, seamless user experience. AWS Elemental Live delivers four times the performance of CPU-only encoding solutions, significantly reducing total cost of ownership. High performance and reduced operating expenses drive immediate business value – improving monetization opportunities and optimizing video delivery.

AWS Elemental Live can be deployed in stand-alone mode or as part of a cluster controlled by Conductor Live 3.

AWS Elemental Statmux is an extension of the AWS Elemental Live product line. The Statmux feature is available on an AWS Elemental Live node, or can be installed as a dedicated AWS Elemental Statmux node. The AWS Elemental Live/Statmux integrated node contains all the features of AWS Elemental Live, plus the Statmux. The AWS Elemental Statmux dedicated node contains only the Statmux feature.

AWS Elemental Statmux can be deployed in stand-alone mode or as part of a cluster controlled by Conductor Live 3.

These Release Notes describe new features, product enhancements, and known issues up to this LA (Limited availability) software release.

Types of Releases AWS Elemental Live appliances currently offer monthly builds designated either General Release Major (GA), GA Maintenance, or Limited Release (LA).

GA Major Builds The Live "Major Feature Release" GA builds:

Are released several times a year and are intended for all standard workflows. For example, Elemental Live 2.18.3 GA.

Are available for download from the Elemental User Community by any customer with an active support agreement

May be installed on new Elemental Live appliances which ship from the factory.

Are production ready builds that receive the spectrum of software support entitlements from the AWS Elemental Support team.

GA Maintenance Builds The Elemental Live "Maintenance" GA builds follow GA builds and contain only fixes to issues. For example, Elemental Live 2.17.4 GA (Maintenance).

LA Builds The Elemental Live LA "Feature Release" builds:

Are intended to deliver new features quickly to early adopter customers. For example, 2.17.0 LA.

Are only available for download from the Elemental User Community by pre-authorized customers with an active support agreement

Are production ready builds that receive the spectrum of software support entitlements from the AWS Elemental Support team for a limited period of time.

LA builds must be updated to GA builds within two GA release cycles after the LA build, or within eight (8) months, whichever is shorter. For example, you install Elemental Live 2.17.1 LA on your Elemental Live appliance. Two months later Elemental Live 2.17 GA is available – you should update your production system to this GA build. Subsequently the next Elemental Live GA, Elemental Live 2.18 GA is released. You must update your LA build to either Elemental Live 2.17 GA or Elemental Live 2.18 GA in order to qualify for AWS Elemental Support, as the Elemental Live 2.17.1 LA support window timed out upon the release of Elemental Live 2.18 GA.

Essential notes

Change to support for Statmux Caution: AWS Elemental Live version 2.18.x does not support MPTS or Statmux features. The functionality related to MPTS and Statmux is currently being updated and will be reinstated in a later release. If you have questions, contact AWS Elemental Support.

Scenario: You Use Elemental Live but You Don’t Use MPTS or Statmux You can safely upgrade to version 2.18.x.

Scenario: You Use Elemental Live and the MPTS or Statmux Features Built into Elemental Live Don’t upgrade to version 2.18.x. If you use Conductor Live 3, don’t upgrade to version 3.18.x.

On the web interface in 2.18.x, you will see the fields relating to MPTS and Statmux. But if you run an event that uses any of these fields, the event will start and immediately fail.

To run existing events that include MPTS or Statmux or to create and run existing events that include MPTS or Statmux, you must remain on version 2.17.x or lower.

Scenario: You Have Elemental Live Installed on One Appliance and Stand-Alone Elemental Statmux Installed on another Appliance Don’t upgrade any of these appliances to version 2.18.x.

Mandatory password reset There is a mandatory password reset required for AWS Elemental Live and AWS Elemental Conductor Live 3, if your appliances have been configured with user authentication enabled. This change is to ensure that all users of the web interface and API have set strong passwords.

The new password requirements are the following:

Minimum 8 characters.

At least one uppercase letter, at least one lowercase letter, at least one number, and at least one symbol.

This password change is a one-time action. Therefore, for example, if you change the password when you install version 2.18, you won’t be forced to change it again when you install 2.19.

For more details, and for important information about an issue with this procedure, see the Release Notes for AWS Elemental Conductor Live 3, version 3.18 GA.

Reminder to cycle the power when upgrading or downgrading After you upgrade or downgrade any version of AWS Elemental Live, you must turn off the appliance and turn it back on. Doing so ensures that any installer and firmware updates (or downgrades) are set up correctly.

Video quality vs. density AWS Elemental invests in continuous improvement of VQ for the AWS Elemental Live appliance. In some cases, VQ improvements are achieved by trading off stream density. By upgrading to this new software version, you may experience moderate loss of density on some workflows. If density is more important than VQ, you may be able to recover lost density by adjusting VQ parameters, such as for an H.264 or HEVC stream changing SvQ from 0 to 1.

Deprecation information Civolution watermarking will be deprecated in version 2.19.3.

2.18 displays a warning message to provide advance notice of the upcoming deprecation.

(SOCK-25628)

When you start an Event with the DTS Express audio encoder feature you will see an inaccurate notice that indicates future deprecation in version 2.19. Please disregard this notice. DTS Express will be supported for all 2.19 versions.

Resolved Issues Key Topic Description

SOCK-35701 Inputs –

SMPTE ST 2110

When a Live event was configured to use a SMPTE ST 2110 input, if the ancillary stream contained RTP packets with more than one ancillary data payload, only the first payload was processed correctly. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35409 Inputs In a quadrant 4K configuration, content from HD SDI inputs flickered on the main image under some conditions. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35340 Outputs – SMPTE ST 2110

SMPTE ST 2110 NTSC inputs without VANC data sometimes displayed an incorrect rolling image. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35078 Captions - Teletext

Teletext streams that did not define a region sometimes displayed incorrect characters for certain languages. This can now be corrected by setting the DEFAULT_TELETEXT_LANGUAGE_CODE environment variable to the appropriate ISO 639 language code.

SOCK-34991 Inputs RTMP pull inputs sometimes leaked memory if they failed while reading the body of a packet. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34190 Outputs - Audio HLS/fMP4 output sometimes dropped audio after the first audio segment. This is now fixed.

New Features There are no new features in this release. Also see the New Features in the previous version.

Resolved Issues Key Topic Description

SOCK-31491 Outputs – Web interface

The tooltip text for the HTTP Push Dialect field was incorrect. It has been updated to the following: Type of HTTP communication to use for pushing to origin server: 1) None - not allowed for HTTP destinations 2) Akamai - compatibility with Akamai CDN inputs 3) Basic_PUT - No creation of folders but deletes old files based on the setting in "Keep Segments" field. 4) WebDAV - HTTP PUT, PROPFIND, MKCOL, DELETE. Creates folders as needed and deletes old files based on the settings in "Keep Segments" field. 5) AWS Elemental MediaStore - HTTPS PUT. Creates folders as needed and deletes old files based on the settings in "Keep Segments" field. Enter the Access Key ID in the Username field. Enter the Secret Access Key in the Password field.

SOCK-34287 Inputs – Web interface

When a network device type was set to "None" in the Network settings, the device was not configurable from the web interface. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34600 Captions When using 608 to 708 upconvert, the positions of roll-up captions were not preserved. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34998 Captions – Teletext

Teletext caption delay and SMPTE 2038 configuration settings sometimes disappeared after saving or editing an event with an SDI input. These fields now display correctly.

SOCK-35044 Outputs - DASH Prior to this release, the DASH MPD was updated only once for each segment, and once after the first segment was published. With this fix, when chunked encoding and chunked transfer options are selected, the MPD is updated after the first fragment of every segment, thereby reducing latency. To achieve optimal performance in low latency applications, small segment sizes such as 2, 3, or 5 seconds are recommended.

Also see the Resolved Issues in the previous version.

Known Issues Key Topic Description

SOCK-35328 Inputs – SCTE-35; SCTE-104

SCTE-104 messages with a segmentation descriptor are converted to SCTE-35 messages with an incorrect descriptor length field value.

New Features SMPTE 2038 output support Elemental Live can now package all ancillary data found on HD SDI inputs into SMPTE 2038 packets using UDP/TS outputs so that supplemental ancillary data is still passed through. Supported data types, such as captions, will be passed through as SMPTE 2038 packets in addition to being handled as they were before. This is enabled via the web interface in the UDP/TS output control under "PID Control."

Elemental Live currently supports the following configurations: HD AJA SDI input, UDP/TS output. Input and output must use the same frame rate.

Stop an event without issuing an HLS #EXT-X-ENDLIST tag HLS output group processing now allows you to choose not to generate an HLS ENDLIST tag when the event is stopped. This is analogous to the check box on Smooth Output Groups that allows you to disable Sending End of Stream on event stop.

Additional option for SCTE-35 The REST API for time_signal now supports an additional option for immediate mode via offsets in milliseconds with the following XML syntax: <time_signal><offset></offset><descriptors></descriptors></time_signal>

SMPTE-2110 ingest of 4K on dual 25GbE interface Elemental Live now supports SMPTE 2110 4K ingest and encoding on Elemental Live appliances with 25 GbE interfaces.

New 4.4 Kickstart An upgraded 4.4 kickstart is now available for the L800 series Elemental Live line of appliances. Customers with Group 5 or prior hardware generations do not require this new kickstart.

4K ABR stack for Elemental Live L880 SKUs For Elemental Live running on L880 systems (dual-socket, 64-core-per-socket systems), L880 Elemental Live appliances now support new 4K workflows, including: 1x4K TS or SDI input to 4K HEVC outputs with the following profiles:

Segmentation descriptors are now parsed in splice insert messages Elemental Live now allows for segmentation descriptors to be added to the CUE_POINT REST call. If a descriptors tag is present, the included segmentation descriptor information is parsed, and then passed into the encoded output stream.

An example curl call illustrating this is:

curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:3000/live_events/1/cue_point -H 'Accept: application/xml' -H 'Content-Type: application/xml' -d '<cue_point><event_id>444</event_id><splice_time><hours>0</hours><minutes>0</minutes><seconds>18</seconds><frames>14</frames></splice_time><duration>7</duration><descriptors>022343554549000000017FC300001499700E0F6164617373657469645F3132333435220000027C43554549000000027FC300001499700C664E4243557B2261737365744964223A226164617373657469645F3132333435222C2263756544617461223A7B2263756554797065223A227374616E646172645F627265616B222C226B6579223A227062222C2276616C7565223A227374616E64617264227D7D3400000000</descriptors></cue_point>'

SMPTE 2110 input Elemental Live now supports SMPTE-2110 SD video inputs and SMPTE 2110-31 Dolby Audio inputs, in addition to existing PCM audio (SMPTE 2011-30) input support.

Multiperiod DASH for failover use cases Customers with DASH outputs may now use CL3 to manage seamless event failover when using the $Numbers$ name modifier. Customers require Conductor Live 3 to use this feature.

Dolby Vision license Dolby Vision is moving from a standard feature to a $0 licensed feature in Elemental Live 2.18.1 and higher, similar to the existing HEVC license. Customers may contact their sales manager or the support team to enable this new license upon upgrading to 2.18.1 or higher.

TTML and EBU-TT-D subtitle justification heuristics Elemental Live has improved EBU-TT-D caption positioning and alignment. Subtitle and caption alignment remains constant.

Resolved Issues Key Topic Description

SOCK-35164 Outputs Updates to the EVE library caused some encoding jobs to fail. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35056 Inputs Some 10GbE NICs in L800 series hardware require different configuration than other 10GbE NICs. The ability to configure these interfaces in the user interface has been temporarily disabled in 2.18.3 GA.

SOCK-35052 Captions, SCTE-27

Captions in the SCTE-27 caption decoder sometimes had a bad color palette. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35041 Outputs Log messages in /var/log/messages were too verbose, causing the log to fill up quickly. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35008 Outputs, Dolby Digital

For events configured with Dolby Digital passthrough for the audio stream of an HLS output group with TS as the container type, changes to the number of audio channels on the input during the lifetime of the event did not trigger discontinuity markers in the HLS output. This is now fixed.

SOCK-35007 Inputs - Audio Input files with invalid reorder frame number changes resulted in decoding out of order, affecting the audio. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34969 Captions,

Inputs – SMPTE-2110

When an Elemental Live event had a SMPTE-2110 input with Teletext (OP-47) captions carried in the ancillary data, the captions were missing in the output. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34919 Web interface The web interface widget that reports memory sometimes erroneously showed a negative percentage of memory used. The memory UI widget now returns the correct value.

SOCK-34915 Network Toggling "Allow external SNMP access" in Elemental Live or CL3 resulted in a 500 error page. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34905 Inputs Image-based SMPTE-TT outputs wrote incorrect timestamps at rollover. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34855 Web interface, Inputs - SVQ

Changing an event's SVQ value in the web interface did not always update the event as intended. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34676 Web interface, Inputs - SNMP

If the SNMPD service stopped, memory usage did not update in the web interface until it was restarted manually. This is now fixed.

SOCK-34533 Outputs Slow-down issues, such as thumbnail generation, sometimes resulted in encoder backup and dropped frames. This is now resolved.

SOCK-34523 Outputs - MediaConnect

Elemental Live sometimes disconnected from MediaConnect when using Reliable TS output, and the event had to be restarted. This is now fixed.

SOCK-17193 Outputs - HLS Using a segment modifier with a slash (/) resulted in incorrect playlist entries for HLS outputs. This is now fixed.

Known Issues Key Topic Description

SOCK-35194 Licensing - Rivermax

The Rivermax license error message is outdated.

SOCK-35183 Inputs – SMPTE-2110

The steps to set up SMPTE-2110 for an L840 with some 10GbE cards are not correct as currently written.

SOCK-35158 Hardware In some cases, events fail to recover after a power outage.

SOCK-35140 Messaging The error message when unable to bind to a stream IP address is confusing.

SOCK-35044 Outputs There is an issue that prevents publishing of fMP4 segments before the full segments have been encoded.
