Cisco NCS 4201 and Cisco NCS 4202 OverviewThe Cisco NCS 4201 and NCS 4202 Network Convergence Systems are full-featured, compact one-RU highconverged access platforms designed for the cost-effective delivery of TDM to IP orMPLSmigration services. These temperature-hardened, high-throughput, small-form-factor, low-power-consumption systems areoptimized for circuit emulation (CEM) and business applications. NCS 4201 and NCS 4202 chassis allowservice providers to deliver dense scale in a compact form factor and unmatched CEM and Carrier Ethernet(CE) capabilities. They also provide a comprehensive and scalable feature set, supporting both Layer 2 VPN(L2VPN) and Layer 3 VPN (L3VPN) services in a compact package .

For more information on the Cisco NCS 4201 Chassis, see the Cisco NCS 4201 Hardware Installation Guide.

For more information on the Cisco NCS 4202 Chassis, see the Cisco NCS 4202 Hardware Installation Guide.

Determining the Software VersionYou can use the following commands to verify your software version:

• Consolidated Package— show version

• Individual sub-packages—show version installed (lists all installed packages)

Bundled FPGA VersionsThe following are HoFPGA version bunlded in the IOS:

• NCS4201—0X00030007

• NCS4202—0x00010010

Limitations and Restrictions on the Cisco NCS 4201 and CiscoNCS 4202 Series

• The default interface command is used to default the parameters under that interface. However, whenspeed is configured on the interface, the following error is displayed:Speed is configured. Remove speed configuration before enabling auto-negotiation

• SSFPs are not supported.

• Virtual services should be deactivated and uninstalled before performing replace operations.

• For Cisco NCS 4202 Series:

C H A P T E R 2New Features in Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1

This chapter describes the new features supported on the Cisco NCS 4200 Series with Cisco IOS XE Everest16.5.1.

• New Software Features for NCS 4201 and NCS 4202 in Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1, page 5

• New Hardware Features for NCS 4201 and NCS 4202 in Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1, page 6

New Software Features for NCS 4201 and NCS 4202 in CiscoIOS XE Everest 16.5.1

• BFD on IP Unnumbered Interfaces

• The Cisco NCS 4200 Series now support BFD to run on IP unnumbered interfaces, which take the IPaddress from the loopback address. You can use the same loopback address on multiple interfaces. Formore information, see IP Routing: BFD Configuration Guide, Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1 (NCS 4200Series).

• Support for Optic ONS-SI-2G-S1The ONS-SI-2G-S1 is supported on the 1-Port OC-192 or 8-Port Low Rate CEM IM.

• Support of Adaptive Clock Recovery (ACR) on 8-port T1/E1 Interface Module

Adaptive Clock Recovery (ACR) is most commonly used for Circuit Emulation (CEM). ACR is anaveraging process that negates the effect of random packet delay variation and captures the average rateof transmission of the original bit stream. ACR recovers the original clock for a synchronous data streamfrom the actual payload of the data stream. In other words, a synchronous clock is derived from anasynchronous packet stream. ACR is a technique where the clock from the TDM domain is mappedthrough the packet domain. Effective Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1, ACR is supported on 8-port T1/E1interface module.

For more information, see 1-Port OC-192 or 8-Port Low Rate CEM Interface Module ConfigurationGuide, Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1 (Cisco NCS 4200 Series).

• Support for DS3 Smart SFP

DS3 Smart SFP supporting CEP ( VCoP Smart SFP) is a special type of optical transceiver whichencapsulates T3 frames on STS-1 channels into packet format.

For more information, see Time Division Multiplexing Configuration Guide, Cisco IOS XE Everest16.5.1 (Cisco NCS 4200 Series).

• Unframed E1 for BCP over MLPPP

Bridge Control Protocol (BCP) is responsible for configuring, enabling and disabling the bridge protocolmodules on both ends of the point-to-point link. The BCP feature enables forwarding of Ethernet framesover serial networks, and provides a high-speed extension of enterprise LAN backbone traffic throughametropolitan area. When BCP is supported onMultilink PPP (MLPPP), it enables transport of EthernetLayer 2 frames through MLPPP.

For more information, see Cisco NCS 4200 Series Software Configuration Guide, Cisco IOS XE Everest16.5.1.

C H A P T E R 3Caveats in Cisco IOS XE Everest 16.5.1

This chapter describes open and resolved severity 1 and 2 caveats and select severity 3 caveats:

• The "Open Caveats" sections list open caveats that apply to the current release andmay apply to previousreleases. A caveat that is open for a prior release and is still unresolved applies to all future releasesuntil it is resolved.

• The "Resolved Caveats" sections list caveats resolved in a specific release, but open in previous releases.

The bug IDs are sorted alphanumerically.

The Caveats section includes the bug ID and a short description of the bug. For details on the symptoms, conditions, and workaround for a specific caveat you must use the Bug Search Tool.
