    The Ebola Epidemic

    Beat

    Transmission

    Signs and Symptoms

    Treatment and vaccines

    Prevention and control

Infection occurs from direct contact through broken skin ormucous membranes with the blood, or other bodily fluids orsecretions (stool, urine, saliva, semen) of infected people.Infection can also occur if broken skin or mucous membranesof a healthy person come into contact with environment thathas become contaminated with an Ebola patient's infectiousfluids such as soiled clothing, bed linen, or used needles

Sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat are typical signs and symptoms. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhea rash, impaired kidneyand liver function, and in some cases, both internal andexternal bleeding. Laboratory findings include low white bloodcell and platelet counts, and elevated liver enzymes.

Supportive care- rehydration with oral or intravenous fluidsand treatment of specific symptoms improves survival. There

is as yet no proven treatment available for EVD. However, arange of potential treatments including blood products, immune therapies and drug therapies are currently beingevaluated. However, currently doctors are focusing onsymptomatic treatment of the infection

Good outbreak control relies on applying a package ofinterventions, namely case management, surveillance andcontact tracing, a good laboratory service, safe burials andsocial mobilization. Community engagement is key tosuccessfully controlling outbreaks. Raising awareness of risk

factors for Ebola infection and protective measures thatindividuals can take is an effective way to reduce humantransmission

Our experts answer your concerns on the rising epidemicdisease Diabetes

    1. At wha t fr equency should I get my HbA1cchecked?

    2. What are the key signs and symptoms that I

    need to be aware of?

    3. What are the other important health checkups thatI need to undergo?

    Annually -

    -

    --

    4. What is the difference between type 1 & type 2 diabetes?

    5. Does Pranayam & Bittergourd juice help in control myblood-glucose levels?

HbA1c is a test which gives the average of your bloodglucose values over the previous 8 to 12 weeks. HbA1cshould be checked at last once every six months. Somepatients may need more frequent testing (eg. duringpregnancy).

The most common symptoms of diabetes areexcessive thirst, frequent urination, increasedappetite, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, slowhealing of wounds, repeated urinary tract infectionsand in men erectile problems.

It is highly recommended that patients with diabetesundergo periodical check-up to look for complications ofdiabetes.

Eye examination with dilated pupil to look forretinopathyFoot examination - nerve test, blood flow and anylesions in the footECG (or) Tread mill test depending on the symptomsKidney test - Blood Creatinine, Urine protein

These may need to be done more frequentlydepending on the findings from these tests. Forexample, somebody with retinal changes may needto be reviewed after 3 or 6 months depending on thefindings.

Type 1 diabetes is where there is no insulin in the body. This is generally due to immune-mediated diseaseaffecting the pancreas (the organ that produces insulin).Type 2 diabetes is where there is some insulin productionbut not sufficient to keep the blood glucose under controlor the action of insulin is inefficient (called insulinresistance).

People have been using various methods to control the

blood glucose like above. These may help depending onthe type of diabetes, the person's blood glucose levels,

    -

etc. But strong evidence (through research studies) forthese therapies is awaited. Pranayam has certainlybeen shown to be quite useful in some of the diseasesand if performed correctly this could potentially bebeneficial.

Our 'Ask your Doctor' in the next edition will

help answer your questions about Cancer,

whether you are newly diagnosed, in

YaP Yoga & Physiotherapy TMYaP is a novel concept that combines the Eastern

philosophy of Yoga and ancient Oriental principles ofbalancing vital energy, with the Western technology ofPhysiotherapy using Bio-Energy Stimulation. It acceleratesthe recovery of damaged tissue at the cellular level providingpain relief as also overall wellness.

Apart from pain relief, benefits include faster recovery frommuscle, joint, tendon and ligament injuries, increasedmetabolism and mobility and aid in the treatment of sleepdisorders and chronic fatigue.

Invented by a reputed Belgian physical therapist, a proprietarymicro-current stimulation device safely and gently stimulatesthe YO-MO points of traditional Chinese therapy for balancingthe flow of vital energy (Ch'i) in energy meridians (pathways orchannels) to treat various organ systems and rid the body ofdisease. These meridians are carefully traced for eachindividual, and assessed and stimulated by trainedphysiotherapists with micro-current and physical stimulationfor providing the most effective results.

Favored by some of the most renowned professional athletesand reputed physiotherapists worldwide, this proprietarymicro-current stimulation device raises the level of adenosinetriphosphate (ATP) regarded as the universal 'energycurrency' of living cells and essential for all physiologicalprocesses which use energy which, in turn, results in quickerrelief from pain and rapid recovery from injuries. The micro-current makes it possible to reactivate damaged cells by usingthe organ's own frequency as a sort of reminder to helpspecific cells return to normal so that the organ functionsbetter.

Scientific studies have shown that the flow of micro-currentshas a direct co-relation with a rise in the level of adenosinetriphosphate. In 1982, seminal research conducted by NgokCheng et al. demonstrated that direct electric currents lead toa substantial increase in ATP concentrations in the tissue1.The researchers stated that the effect on ATP productioncould be explained by proton movements on the basis of thechemiosmotic theory of Dr. Peter Mitchell 2.

TMTo sustain the benefits of the therapy, the YaP program hascarefully selected Yoga postures or asanas depending on theindividual's need and ability. Yoga offers the dual benefit ofstrengthening and adding flexibility to the entire body

musculature as well as specific asanas that have been provento work against as well as prevent many common ailments.

Surprising as it may seem, now we have the devices that uses uses sweatgland function to detect the blood sugar level of patient. Electrodes are placedon their hands and feet which gives the recording of an individual's height andweight. The result is captured within three minutes .

    Technology in Healthcare

    6

The patient places a forearm on the device which shineslight into the skin. A small amount of light that reflectsback is analyzed by the spectrometer and measured fordifferences from the original light. These differences helpdetermine if the patient has pre or Type 2 Diabetes. Theresults are reported in less than four minutes. At this

stage, the process is still just a screening. Additional, more precise testing will be needed

You just clip the Gluco Track sensor onto your earlobe andwithin a minute, it sends your Blood Glucose data through aheadphone-style cord to a smart phone-sized handheldcontroller. It features an easy-to-use touch screen, uses abuilt-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery and includes a USBport for data downloading. The device both displays andspeaks out loud the results of a blood glucose reading, andhas memory capacity large enough for 1,000 readings peruser.

A non-invasive equipment that diagnoses the risk ofdiabetes and its cardiovascular, nephrological andneurological complications by measuring accumulation of

Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) by means offluorescence techniques (skin auto fluorescence (skin AF).

AGEs play a key role in the pathogenesis of many age-related diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovasculardisease and renal failure.
