Its been almost a year now since the rst issue o Relic Hunter came
on line with the April - May issue covering the Core Castle rally.
Relic Hunter has grown in readership, ar surpassing what I had
initially hoped or.
Selling someone to read a digital magazine wasnt all that
hard to do. Its un to read. Many like it because it doesnt add any
clutter on the oor and its interactive. Cant do that with a paper
magazine.
Inside this issue, there are some great articles, antastic nds, great advertising rom major manuacturing companies, a $250.00
contest, new stu, and a lot o very old stu too.
DIV is coming up in a ew weeks (Diggin in Virginia) where
400 hunters will gather in Culpepper County, Virginia to dig up a
ew belt buckles, button, bottles and bullets. The May-June issue
o Relic Hunter will have dozens o photos and just as many stories
describing this event. Its a week long journey into the dirt.
Here in the States, DIV is one o our largest rallys, as our British
cousins across the pond calls a hunt. Amongst American relic
hunters, the American Civil War perhaps has the largest number o
collectors and hunters. Some CW relics command high prices too.
Best o luck to all who will be there.
Behind every fnd is a great photo!

Miners poured into the mountains through San Bernardino in
search o their ortunes. For a time, Belleville, a mining town in
Holcomb Valley, was the largest city in Southern Caliornia with
10,000 residents.
To this day the main gold vein has yet to be discovered. The Valley
remains much the same today and gold is still ound by weekend min-

I dont nd many civil warrelics up here in Iowa, but i did

he won the medal o honor in
the civil war, Lt. James Hill rom
Iowa.
Editors Note:
Ater receiving this rom Dave, I asked mysel
Who was James Hill and why did he receive the
Congressional Medal o Honor. So, with a little bit
o googling and a ew genealogy sites I was ableto not only nd his story, but his photo and an im-
age o his medal. This is a antastic nd or any American Civil
War collector. Its an ID badge that a solider car-
ried on his person and you cant get any more per-sonal. ID badges werent issued to troops during
the American Civil War. Rather, the individual had
to either make one, scratching their names on apiece o tin or go to a jewelry maker and have one
made with better engraving.
It was a matter o personal conscience, i youwere killed in battle there was a good chance that
persons nding your body would not know who
you were and youd be buried in an unmarkedgrave. Bodies would be searched or items and i
an identiying item, such as this ID badge would
be located. Great nd Dave!

A riend o mine gave me permission

Reason being I have dug a lot o colonial

As, Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918,) once said, I
think that I shall never see, a poem as lovely
as a tree.
Exactly what is it that draws us to
these majestic wonders o nature?
Trees are unique, standing alonein their environment, no two exactly
the same. Their leay green branches
outstretched towards the Heavens, providing shade and reprieve to the area
below and anything that might seek
reuge rom the Suns intense glare. Theirmighty roots anchor them to the Earth,
strongly enough to stand against the
mightiest o storms... Deant to all and
oblivious as well... or are they? Imagine
The Old Oak Treeby William Gillraker-Guerre
the stories a tree could tell i they could
talk? Perhaps in some ways, they can.Trees have attracted people, i.e,children, hunters, lovers, photographers,
artists, writers and adventure seekers or
many years. Surely some o Americasearliest settlers had to have chosen the
area in which they decided to build their
house, arm, etc. based on the beauty othe surrounding trees alone? Even in the
most modern, busiest and bustling cities
o the world, youll nd standing there, untouched by time, trees... The cities
are simply built around them. Just allow
your mind to wander or a moment andcontemplate... what must that tree have
seen over the course o its lie?
Perhaps an old 1800s armhouse
sprang up somewhere close to it.. itsoccupants raised children who grew into
adulthood climbing in its branches. Overthe course i its lie, its watched an entire
city grow and surround itsel rom that
one, tiny, arm. Nothing let but a smallopening in the concrete or it to continue
growing.
Is there anyone amongst us who cantruly say theres never been a particular
tree in their lie where they used to sit,
write, read, hunt, or even climb amongstits Heaven stretched branches? Perhaps
just a tree you pass each day on the way
to the oce that stands out in your mind?I personally have many ond childhood
memories o my riends and I, spending
7/29/2019 Relic Hunter Mar/Apr 2011
25/52Relic Hunter March - April, 2011 2
our summer days building tyrannical tree
houses and ropes swings in majestic old
oak trees that were easily 200 years old, then. Imagine i the trees could talk, the
things a 200 year old oak could tell you
about what its seen over the course o itslie?
Perhaps its because Im an obsessive,
proessional treasure hunter and coin
shooter, that Im so attracted to these
monarchs o nature? Is it any small
wonder? As long as people have been
playing in and around these toweringand masterul works o Natures art,
theyve been dropping
and losing items, clues to
our historys past, coinsminted in the days o our
still living ounding athers, jewelry rom ages o old.
Its extremely hard or me
to drive past an old tree, without wondering what
secrets rom days past lie
trapped, secure and hiddenamongst their abulous
network o roots. Who could
have paused to sit and enjoythe shade o that tree so
many years ago? Could they
have dropped something? What secrets DOES that
old tree hold, nestled deep
within its roots?
Friday, the 20th, was
no exception. I was on my
way to a job, driving downthe highway, enjoying the
dawns rst rays and a rich,
ull bodied cup o coee Idbrewed mysel. I drove past
a spot that had always held
my interest because o itsbeauty. Just a common area along the
abled, Choctawhatchee bay. Something
striking has always caught my eye as Ipassed this particular spot, and being in
no hurry this morning, I decided to stop
and have a quick look around ( besides,
this coee was just too good to waste,
7/29/2019 Relic Hunter Mar/Apr 2011
26/526 Relic Hunter March - April, 2011
driving to a job.) Years o erosion and
several major hurricanes had completely
restructured this old beach. The bank endsabruptly in a 30 t, sandy/clay cli. Many
roots and allen trees adorn the shores
and banks. Its virtually
untouched by urbanization. This beach also happens to
have a history o colonialactivity. In the early 1800s,
many settlers decided to take
up residence along the bankso Choctawhatchee bay. Log
cabins and stone chimneys
may have been sparse inthis area, but they did exist.
Theres just no evidence let
today.. or is there? What really appealed to
most about this spot was the
one large, very old oak treethat stood on top the ridge.
Something about it just
drew my attention. I beganto wonder once again. What secrets can
an old tree like that hold? Little by little,
clues began to show. There were rocksand bricks washing out o the clis sides.
Hmm, I thought to mysel, Ill have to
return here with the Sovereign GT andhave a look around.
Saturday, 21st. I did indeed return tothe old tree with detector ( the SovereignGT) and ull truck load o gear. I was
loaded or boar and my optimism was
high. I tuned her up, ground balancedher and began my work. For the next two
weeks, Id be hammering this spot or
all it was worth... I just had one o those
eelings.
One o the rst signals I uncovered
under the old tree, (aside rom literally
hundreds o pull tabs, pop-tops andbottle caps rom centuries untold ) turned
out to be a very old compact makeup
case. Exactly how old it is, has yet
to be determined. Not the
best o nds, or exactlywhat I was hoping
to nd, but still a
good clue that Iwas on the right
track and hadchosen the rightarea.
The next signal
was loud, clearand very concise...
There could be no
mistake, this one
had to be silver. Sure
7/29/2019 Relic Hunter Mar/Apr 2011
27/52Relic Hunter March - April, 2011 2
enough, moments later Id uncovered this 1963 Silver
quarter. A very good sign or me, as this indicated
people had been dropping things here or manyyears and no one has been over the area with a
metal detector, ever.
A ew short moments later, ater
discovering yet another buried campre, complete with blobs o melted aluminum cans
and pull tabs, the Sovereign GT respondedwith a aint, iy silver tone. A ew inches down,
past the remains o the ash and dormant
coals, I pulled this silver, Roosevelt dime romthe ground. A shame
it was partially
melted rom the campre. The dateis completely
obliterated. Still, its a
silver nd and thatsalways a good thing.
Ater several
dollars in modernclad coinage and
many many pull tabs
were retrieved, and I domean, MANY PULL TABS later
( trust me, you do not even WANT
to know how many), even though I had barely taken astep, I received yet another silver tone. This time it was a
Roosevelt dime in antastic condition. It was only
a ew inches deep.Dozens o pull tabs and normal clad
coins later, I began to pick up onainter, deeper signals. Some aint, some air to strong. Amongst
these signals I retrieved an old
sterling hair clip and a very tiny starshaped object that Ive yet to identiy.
Most o these signals were coming rom
the 6-8 inch depth. (along with many older
pull tabs! )
7/29/2019 Relic Hunter Mar/Apr 2011
28/528 Relic Hunter March - April, 2011
My next signal sounded all too amiliar. One o the scratchy, trashy signals.
Something between a pull tab and silver. My suspicions were conrmed upon
retrieval... It was a Bualo Nickel, perhaps the best condition Ive ever oundone in. The majority o bualo nickels Ive ound over the years are so worn,
the date is completely obliterated. No mistake in this one, 1937 it is... and a
great nd at that!
As I sat there pondering how long that Bualo nickel had been layingunder that old oak, who might o dropped it,
what they could have been doing there... Ibegan to wonder, could this day really get
any better? My question was answered
moments later as I stood to stretch mylegs and look out over the bay. A loud
silver tone rang clearly and strong
through the earphones. I beganto mark and retrieve the target.
Moments later I stared in awe at this little
beauty. My, how long had she been laying outhere, waiting or someone to nd her?
Ater a brie lunch, ( sandwiches and bee
jerky ) coee rom the thermos and a good smoke,I decided to give the area one more look over, just to
be sure I hadnt missed another @#$%@! pull tab.
This time I recovered the area very slowly, no discrimination, very high sensitivity, listening very intently or even the aintest o signals. Suddenly, but ever so aintly, I
received a vague, iy trash signal. It was deep, no doubt about that. Close to the tree
Quite a shock to uncover this old beauty. No telling how long it could have been buried out there. Its a nice, solid chunk of silver, thats for sure.

as well, which meant Id be digging around roots. I debated
or a moment in my mind i it was even worth it, especially
ater all the nity items and classic coins Id ound already.Still... Im one o those people who would actually lose sleep
till I returned to see exactly what it was I let go... I had to
dig it. I must coness as well, it wasnt the easiest target Ive
ever retrieved. I had to dig through 15 inches o gnarly, twisted, 5 inch thick roots and work my way around them.
In the end however, when I had the target nally in myhands, my eorts had clearly been
worth it. This beautiul 1883 V nickel
is the rst year minted in thislovely old barber coin.
Many people have never
even seen one o these beore..and there I was, with a piece
o our colonial history, in my hand. I could have jumped
or joy i my legs and back werent so tired rom all those#$@!ing pull tabs I had been digging up! What a antastic nd
this was or me...
Now it was time to leavemy spot and call it a day. Id
plundered and looted the old
tree or all it was worth. A quickraking up and lling in all the
holes Id let behind, restoring
the natural beauty to this placeand I would be on my way, one
last quick scan just to be sure..
Sure enough, there was yetanother aint signal... as luck
would have it... I uncoveredanother very old pull tab. Whowould have ever guessed?
But wait, there was another
signal, just a little deeper? Sureenough, up rom a depth o 20 inches came the aint signal ... and it was gold, very
tiny gold, but gold none the less.. at last my day was complete.
Heres one last shot o the Old Oak, the area I hunted.
I hope youve enjoyed this hunt with me, till next time my riends... keep the sun atyour back and the wind in your ace..

My early-mid Bronze Age at axehead. The axe was ound while out Metal Detecting. The axe is cast in copper alloy; the original surace survives in a good condition and is
only slightly pitted. The axe has a thin and rounded butt, measuring 20.8mm wide and
the terminal measures only 2.3mm thick. The butt measures approximately 48.1mm in length, it is very at in comparison to
other examples. There is a slightly raised area in the centre o the axe, which appears to
be an early orm on the central block, seen on the later palstaves. The thickness o thiscentral area measures 12.7mm. The sides o the axe are chamered rom butt to blade
on both sides. They are at, with the chamering occurring gradually. The chameringhowever gives way to anged chests which can be seen on both edges o the axe, onboth suraces. Ater the raised central area the axe extends into the blade end. The
blade is attened and shaped. It looks worn, but there is no evidence o sharpening.
The blade measures57.2mm rom tip to
tip. The tips are out
at the tips, orming
almost a peltashape. It is probably
an Aylesord typedeveloped at axe,
