Religion in Sci-fi

Does it limit the audience to only those who are religious?

Interpretations

Coming from a conservative catholic background I despise it; therefore, my interpretation of religion is different, yet the use of religion in sci-fi still appeals to me. Why? Everyone has different interpretations of any given religious symbol.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

This is an anime that has a divided community due to the way it can be interpreted. There are negative and positive religious views of its symbols.

Pro-religion views

In a post on a forum, someone that views the bible as fact interprets the destructive nature of the angels as justified: it is the price man pays for playing God (The True Nature of the Angels).

A negative view

To me the destructive nature of angels in the show is an allegory of the way religion constantly tries to hold science back.

One of many.

Evangelion is only one of many examples that shows how the use of religion can make something appeal to a wider audience given how polar the subject matter is. Some people will use it to find religious meanings while others, non-religious meanings.
