MAY 2014 ATTENDANCE & GENERAL GIVING

ST. MARK’S RECEIVES GIFT OF $88,382.69

In May St. Mark’s received a very generous gift of over $88,300 from a member who wishes to remain anonymous. In conversation with this member we received permission to disburse the funds in the following manner, with the blessing of the Finance Committee and Church Council: 1. Tithe to Synod (sharing our blessing with them) $8,000 2. Augustus Trappe $10,000 3. Philadelphia Lutheran Seminary $10,000 4. Church Insurance $7,000 5. St. Mark’s Cemetery (sharing our blessing with them) $5,000 6. Organ Fund $3,000 7. Music Series (special concerts) $3,000 8. Mission Team $1,000 9. Summer Music Camp $1,000 10. Staff Continuing Education (Pastor, Dawn, & Judy- $1,000 each) $3,000 11. Outreach & Fellowship $3,000 12. Air Conditioning of Youth Room $15,000 13. Stair Treads (Smith Carpet) $3,000 14. Replace Outside Doors in Nursery & Stairwell (outside Social Room) $8,000 15. Replenish funds from Memorial Fund for refreshing Memorial Garden grounds $ 4,000 TOTAL: $84,000 BALANCE: $4,382.69 (will be deposited into our “Rainy Day Fund”, along with any extra from the “Contracted” jobs, number 12, 13 & 14, above).

Three Comments:

The member is allowing us to make some necessary Capital Improvements to our building: two stairwells, replacing four doors and air-conditioning another classroom, saves us from undertaking a Capital Campaign to have this work done. I’m sure we all can appreciate not having to make an appeal to the members for this.

How creative our benefactor has allowed us to be with this gift—sharing our blessing with another church, the synod, our church cemetery, programs of ministry at St. Mark’s and Capital Improvements to our building.

How grateful we are for this member’s generosity and thoughtfulness to St. Mark’s and the Church “at large.” JULY 10

TH! DEADLINE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:

Through our Endowment Fund, financial assistance is available to students who are active members of our congregation and who will be starting or continuing higher education in the fall of 2014. Scholarships are available to all active members no matter what your age, including adults who might find themselves needing to return to school for further education. “Active” means having made a record of contribution to the church and a record of communing. Failure to perform these two items will result in the application being denied. Scholarship applications may be picked up in the church office or the secretary’s mailbox in the library/lounge. The completed applications are to be returned to the church office no later than July 10

JULY/AUGUST 2014 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 3

“The Only Thing That’s Constant is Change ” I’m sure you’ve heard of the above phrase before. You’ve probably said it yourself more than once when you see how the valley has changed over the years, how your place of employment has changed, how values of society have changed, how TV programs and movies have changed, how music has changed, how, well, how you have changed. Yes, “the only thing that remains constant is change.” Some changes are good, some, maybe not so good. Good or bad change is not my topic here, but the idea of change is. In this case, changes in church, specifically, St. Mark’s is what I’d like to share with you. After some discussion with our Worship and Outreach Committee, three changes were discussed and later approved by Church Council at their June 30

th meeting. They are, in no particular order:

1. Begin our summer worship schedule in June. Presently we begin our 9:00 AM worship hour the first Sunday in July. Beginning next year, 2015, we will tie our summer worship hour into the school year. Why? Well, we already end Sunday School the same time Upper Perk ends school. Our Children, Youth and Handbell Choirs end before the end of the school year. Senior Choir, by mid-June, is no longer rehearsing Thursday evenings, but on Sunday mornings before the service. We see a significant drop off in church attendance once school is “out”- some of our families depart for summer vacation that third week in June. With these reasons put forth, our summer worship schedule will change, it will tie in with the school year beginning 2015.

2. Our church newsletter, presently published 10 times a year, will now be published six times a year. Why? It has come to our attention in the church office (my attention and Kathy’s) that we spend a lot of our time gathering information, writing articles ourselves, and getting the newsletters out into your hands, the members. Believe me when I tell you, it seems like the tenth of the month deadline for our newsletter comes around mighty fast, too fast. We both felt that it was demanding too much of our time, time that could be spent elsewhere. A September newsletter will be published, after which we will change to publishing bi-monthly: October/November, December/January, February/March, April/May, June/July, August/September. 3. A new worship service to begin. After visiting one of our homebound members for communion, a family member asked me if we had a brief afternoon worship service. I replied, “No, but let me think about it.” Why? There are some of our members who cannot sit through a one hour or longer worship service- think services of Holy Communion. Some members cannot get up and begin moving in time to make a 9:00 AM summer worship service- their bodies just won’t allow them to do this any longer. With that in mind, the following change was made to our worship schedule: that one half hour service of Holy Communion be added on the first Sunday of the month. The service will include a call to worship, reading of scripture, prayers, a “thought for the day”, prelude and postlude music and an opening and closing hymn (Judy, Director of Music, has agreed to play for this service). The service will be at 2:30 in the afternoon. This half hour Service of Holy Communion will be offered on: September 7, October 5, November 2, December 14 (the first Sunday of the month, 12/7, has us hosting Hometown Christmas Parade), January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5

“ST. MARK’S TRIVIA CORNER” So, how many answers did you know from last month’s Trivia Corner? Were there any you didn’t know or had absolutely NO clue

about? Hope you found them to be interesting and informative. And now we move on to several more. Since this newsletter is for both July and August, I am doubling your fun and hope you enjoy them. Remember: NO peeking at the answers ahead of time! Stay tuned for more to come. And once again, if any of these questions spark a trivia question or two from you or your family members, please let me know. It has been great hearing members’ experiences and documenting them to share with everyone! Many thanks to all of you who have made this a welcome addition to our newsletter. DID YOU HEAR? It has been reported on TV and in the newspapers that more and more people are subject to allergies today. They suffer allergies from

food, pollen, pet hair, flowers, almost anything. It has come to our attention in the church office that a few of our members are extremely allergic to cologne and perfume, so much so that it causes them trouble in breathing. Unfortunately, these members/allergy sufferers are experiencing these breathing symptoms whenever they come to church. If you are one who usually applies cologne or perfume before you come to church, would you kindly consider refraining from using it or minimize your use of it on Sunday mornings? You would do your allergy neighbors at church a huge favor, and they would be so appreciative of your kindness. – Thank you!

(Easter), May 3 and June 7. Change. We’re undergoing some changes in the near future. I hope you bear with us. Keep in mind that these changes are not only for us, St. Mark’s members, but for neighbors who might be thinking of coming to visit and worship with us. – Think about it.

Pastor Chuck

GOD’S WORK- OUR HANDS St. John’s Lutheran Church, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (the three Lutheran Churches of the valley) will join hands in

September with our sister congregations in the Southeastern Synod to help support a new effort of the Open Link. All three congregations will be collecting breakfast items in September for the recipients of the Meal on Wheels program. It has been brought to our attention that many of our neighbors who receive a hot meal for the middle of the day and a sandwich at night; might well be in need of something for breakfast the next morning. The three aforementioned Lutheran churches would like to see this happen in September. Therefore, on September 7, 14, 21 and 28 we will collect the following breakfast items:

Belvita Breakfast Biscuits

Individual Oatmeal/Grits packets

Quaker Chewy Granola Bars

Nutri -Grain Fruit Bars

Special L Pastry Crisps

Kashi Soft Baked Cereal Bars

Adult Cereals

Individual Tea/Coffee Bags

English Muffins

Bagels/Bagel Thins

Ensure

Carnation Breakfast Drink

Muffins, Sweet Breads, Danish

Any similar items of your choosing

The three churches will choose a mutual day and time to deliver the items to the former Senior Center in East Greenville, where they will be stored and later distributed, along with the Meals on Wheels. Why not begin shopping now for some of the above mentioned items and bring them to church some Sunday in September. – Thank you!

A LITTLE HUMOR: “DID YOU SEE?” One day a 6 year old girl was sitting in a classroom. The teacher was going to explain evolution to the children. The teacher asked a little boy: Tommy, do you see the tree outside? TOMMY: Yes. TEACHER: Tommy, do you see the grass outside? TOMMY: Yes. TEACHER: Go outside and look up and see if you see the sky. TOMMY: Okay. (He returned a few minutes later.) Yes, I saw the sky. TEACHER: Did you see God? TOMMY: No. TEACHER: That’s my point. We can’t see God because he isn’t there. He doesn’t exist. A little girl spoke up and wanted to ask the boy some questions. The teacher agreed and the little girl asked the boy: Tommy, do you see the tree outside? TOMMY: Yes. LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the grass outside? TOMMY: Yessssss (getting tired of the questions by this time). LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the sky? TOMMY: Yessssss. LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the teacher? TOMMY: Yes. LITTLE GIRL: Do you see her brain? TOMMY: No. LITTLE GIRL: Then according to what we were taught today in school, she must not have one!

JULY/AUGUST 2014 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 7

SUMMER MUSIC CAMP, 2014, is now over. What a glorious week it was. Our third Music Camp had 23 students enrolled (2013: 21; 2012: 11). They welcomed the opportunity to become more attuned to the

sounds of God’s voice in the musical flow of daily life and in the worship life of the faith community. They had chances to participate in International Folk Dance, Sacred Dance, Chorus, Drums, Orff Instruments, Handbells, Guitar, Brass and Strings. The week ended on Friday evening with a dinner for the students and their families and a great service of music by the youth, they showed their families what they had learned at Music Camp. A special “thank you” to the Staff: Janet Aldinger, Cindy Durrell, Shannon Engle, Dorothy Goda, Monica Hale, Bill Kirkner, Judith Love, Diane Mohr, Fred Moyer, Mark Thomas, Dan Tuck, Pastor William A. Fluck and Pastor Chuck. The staff truly had a great time in working with the youth…they were terrific! – Can’t wait until next year! Nuptials – Congratulations to Adam Sands and Jenna Hemperly who were married at St. Mark’s on May 25th. Although Adam and Jenna are not members of St. Mark’s, Jenna’s grandfather is Rudolph Mauer, and Jenna’s parents (Craig and Erica Mauer Hemperly) were wed at St. Mark’s in the 70’s. We also wish to congratulate Leon Edelman and Kaylyn Syvret. They tied the knot on Saturday, June 14

th at Calvary

Moravian Church in Allentown. Best wishes to Leon and Kaylyn as they begin their life of love. Baptisms – At the 10:15 service, on May 25

th,

we welcomed to our St. Mark’s Family through infant baptism, Spencer David Rippley. Spencer is the son of Christopher and Amanda (Fosbenner) Rippley.

New members: Douglas Kramer is the husband of Angela Kramer and father of Ashley and Kaitlyn.

The Kramer’s have been long time members of St. Mark’s. Doug enjoys hiking, walking, camping, horseback riding and traveling. His community interests include Relay for Life. OUR THANKS TO:

Dawn Harris for shopping, preparing and helping serve a wonderful breakfast for the confirmands and their families on Pentecost Sunday, June 8

th. Approximately sixty people

enjoyed a delicious meal before the Service of Confirmation. The eight youth who were confirmed also made their first Holy Communion.

Judith Love and Pastor Chuck, who on that very same day, June 8

th, hosted a luncheon

for the children and their families of the Children and Youth Choirs. Cold cuts, side salads and beverage were enjoyed by all—topped off with make your own ice-cream sundaes, with all the toppings.

Jill Haldeman, Dawn Harris and Diane Mohr for shopping, preparing and serving a great breakfast for Father’s Day, where we honored all dads and men who provide so much and “fatherly care” to loved ones. Over sixty people attended this free breakfast. The guest speaker was Mike Tannous, Executive Director of our local YMCA. Mike talked about the excitement over the new “Y” that is being built in the valley, the wonderful programs that are and will be offered by the “Y”—many of which have underlying Christian values, and what Father’s Day means to him.

Mark your calendar now for the fall meeting of the Altar Guild which will be held in the social room at 7PM on September 3rd. Plan to

attend. Any member of St. Mark’s is welcome to attend the meeting and find out what service we provide to the church. We always welcome new members. The time commitment is small and it is a good way to meet other members of your church family.

THE HAPPY LUTHERANS (formerly- the The Bereavement Group) did not make a trip to the shore this year- for the first time in twelve years. Ah, but we will have an opportunity for yet

another day trip to The American Music Theater on Tuesday, September 16

th. We will get to

hear the music of Andrew Lloyd Weber, Music of the Night (Evita, Cats, JC Superstar, Phantom of the Opera and more). Costs are $27 per person (assuming we have a group of 15 or more—(no problem, right?). Deadline for ordering tickets will be Sunday, August 3

rd. We plan to stop for

lunch at Shady Maple (Lunch is “extra”). The schedule will look like this (times are approximate):

10 AM, depart from church parking lot

11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, Lunch (Shady Maple)

1:00 to 2:00 PM, shopping at nearby stores

2:00 PM, depart to American Music Theater

3:00 to 4:45 PM, Music of the Night

4:45 PM, (will offer two options, since we plan on car-pooling, option one will be to return home and get dinner there; or, option two, stay in the area for dinner and return home afterwards. Option one would get home by 7:00 PM. Option two will likely not get home until 8:30 PM. Folks will be asked which option they prefer before we depart so we can plan transportation accordingly.

This trip is “open” to anyone who wishes to go….not just members of “The Happy Lutherans”. All you need to do is order your tickets by August 3

rd, at $27 each. Checks

should be made payable to “St. Mark's Lutheran Church” and dropped off at the church office. Please DO NOT put your check for this event in the offering plate; again, bring it into the church office. And, remember, meals are “extra”. We are looking for volunteer drivers. If you’re able to drive, call the church office and let Pastor or Kathy know. Also, please say whether you plan to return home immediately after the show, or plan to have dinner somewhere in the area before you return home. – Thank you!

The Open Link – has many volunteer opportunities which include administrative support/front desk/data entry; meals on wheels packer and/or driver; community food cupboard; community services/education; special events/holiday programs – contact The Open Link for more information. DID YOU KNOW?

1. Psalm 118 is the middle chapter of the entire Bible?

2. Before Psalm 118, Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible?

3. After Psalm 118, Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible?

4. That there are 594 chapters before and following Psalm 118?

5. That if you add up all the chapters except Psalm 118, you get a total of 1188 chapters?

6. And incidentally, 1188 or Psalm 118 verse 8 also happens to be the middle verse of the Bible.

The central verse should have a fairly important message don’t you think?

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”

Vacation Bible School - is being held Sunday, July 20

Thank you to Barbara Thomas for coordinating the 8:00 am greeters the past

few years. It is always nice to have members step forth and volunteer here at St. Mark’s. We are in need of someone to fill this vacant spot. Please speak with Pastor Chuck or call the church office. Thank you.

Added this year is Pastor Chuck’s Blessing of the Ani-mals, which will take place twice in the day, 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. There are some other special items in discussion to possibly add to the day. All this leads into a very busy day! We are asking for volunteers to help in a lot of differ-ent areas. Anyone interested in helping out on this very special day, please let a committee member know as soon as possible. A schedule of events and the day’s activities will be posted by the end of summer. Our first Fall Festival was a great success and we’re hoping to make it even bigger and better this year. More importantly the joy in working together as a Church Family! Thank you! The Fall Festival Committee: Jill Haldeman, Li-sa Sell, Joan Brunner, Angie Berger, Jen Pyne, Heather Schmitt, Reenie Edelman and Amy Ha-genbach Dear St. Mark’s: Thank you so much for the ser-vice and letting us get our son baptized at St. Mark’s. Bless you all, Amanda, Chris and Spen-cer Rippley.

Pastor Chuck: Thank you so much for perform-ing Jenna and Adam’s wedding ceremony. We appreciate all of your special effort on this joyous day. Kindest regards, Craig & Erika Hemperly

A special thank you goes out to Candace Reyn-olds for taking home the acolyte gowns for laun-dry and pressing. Thanks for such a generous voluntary act of thoughtfulness. Dear Pastor Chuck: Thank you for your visit to me in the hospital. Your prayers for me and all who were ill were a comfort to me. God bless you and keep you in his care as you care for his family. – Edith Golway Dear Prayer Shawl Ministry: Thank you for the prayer shawl you gave me. During my recent illness, your shawl kept me warm and thankful to be blessed by such wonderful Christians. – Edith Golway Dear Pastor Chuck, Reenie & Members of St. Mark’s: Just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate the church allowing us to have our meetings there! - Sheri on behalf of Relay for Life Hi Pastor Chuck: I saw my dad on Monday, lat-er in the afternoon, and he told me that you were there to visit him. He said he had an enjoyable time with you and it was a very nice visit. He re-ally appreciated the multi-colored prayer shawl he received from the ladies at church. He could make out the colors. Have a good day and thanks for visiting my dad – Ellen Leh (on behalf of Russell Thomas) And a thank you from Dolores Pennypacker that was misplaced by Kathy (so sorry Dolores) – Dear Pastor Chuck and Members of St. Mark’s: Thank you for your visits, prayers and cards while I was in the hospital and recuperating at home. Thank you again – Dolores Pennypacker
