REMARQUE | FAU VISUAL ANNUAL 20132
Editor’s Note
Special Thanks
The faU Designers’ Edge student organization released the first printed issue of Remarque in fall 2012 to showcase the creative programs in Broward. We immediately distributed them across the faU campuses to help strengthen awareness of the new journal. We began promoting the second issue of Remarque during the fall 2012 semester with flyers, facebook posts, and word of mouth.
Designers’ Edge held a competition to design the cover masthead during the Spring 2013 semester. Brent Rollins, a new York based graphic designer who presented a lecture at faU in april, juried the 14 submissions. Carlos francisco, a Bfa graphic design student, designed the selected masthead. The Remarque team chose the student work for the cover image. out of the many submissions received, we chose a digital photograph by Bfa graphic design student, Roseannna Hassad.
Designers’ Edge members, and other student contributors, helped make this issue of Remarque come together once again. The Remarque staff worked to encourage students to submit, jury the work, organize the content, and execute the production. after 6 months of promotion, we received over 700 submissions from 100 faU students. We juried the work down to 150 works created by 67 faU students. I thank all of you who submitted and those of you who were any part of the Remarque team. I hope you enjoy our second issue!

Faculty Interviews
Tammy KnippAssociate ProfessorVisual arts and art History
How do you measure success?I measure success through an evaluation process: a critical design analysis to define what and why certain elements were successful; to define why alternative applications were not suitable; and to articulate areas for further development. I don’t define success as a comparison to failure.
What advice do you have for the design student? If I would define the term “student” from a traditional perspective, then I would describe someone who is enrolled in a typical classroom setting. otherwise, in a larger context, I would define a student as someone who desires and continues to learn beyond the scope of the traditional classroom.
My advice for the “traditional student” would be to recommend (demand) they take design risks during their educational years of schooling and not to produce work as a means to please or gain the approval of their instructor. The student who practices this methodology does so, claiming the professor is the determiner of their grade. In this scenario, the student chooses a “safe route” — avoiding risk-taking challenges.
It is my observation that many students shy from taking risks due to their fear of failure. “fear breeds ignorance” (defining ignorance as the lack of knowledge or education). To avoid failure due to fear is choosing to be ignorant — a dichotomy to that of which defines an education.
Brittany SchadeGraduate Teaching AssistantVisual arts and art History
How do you like to tap into your creativity?Maintaining focus can sometimes be a difficult thing, especially since the internet is so distracting. So I brew some tea and select a good playlist and try to get into the creative zone. When this doesn’t help I tend to get inspired when I go outside for a walk.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?Teaching. I returned to grad school to become a design professor. Starting this fall I will be teaching interactive design at Western Washington University. I am very excited to be able to teach in such an uncharted area of design.
At a Designers’ Edge meeting this semester, the group decided to introduce something new to the latest issue of Remarque.
Our success is rooted in who we surround ourselves with including professors, classmates and other colleagues. The faculty deserve recognition for the impact they make on our lives. They are here to help us try to find ways to take risks while we have the freedom to do so. Sometimes we take our education for granted and forget the value of the classroom experience. We must always remember that knowledge is power.
A handful of students participated in these “student / teacher interviews” with professors that represent the work in this publication. We simply asked a list of questions relating to design philosophy and methodology. These questions are some that I am sure most of us have asked ourselves at one point in time. A sampling of their answers are listed here.
Stephanie CunninghamProfessor of Graphic DesignVisual arts and art History
Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years? It is impossible to know what happens next. I studied industrial design in undergrad but an internship threw a fork in the road that led me to graphic design. a chance conversation landed me in graduate school. My graduate fellowship landed me in the classroom. I came to faU fifteen years ago with the intention of staying three years. You just never know.
What was your least effective project?Sometimes the projects students perceive as least effective are the most effective. It just takes time and experience to understand the value of some lessons. I used to give students more projects with real world clients. I stopped doing it because I found that people looking for free work from students are not often the most open to the value of good design. While it is a useful exercise to work with a difficult client, your time in school is a short and precious time to be creative. You have your whole career to master difficult clients. Your time is better spent developing your skills and learning to defend your ideas.
Ariel Baron–RobbinsVisiting Painting InstructorVisual arts and art History
What aspect of design do you give highest priority to?I would say the element of surprise is a great thing to give priority to because we are so saturated today with images that it’s like walking around in an art fair. The only thing that you’re going to stop and look at is the thing that surprises you.
What philosophy or techniques do you use in motivating your students?I really push my students to be disciplined. If I can get my students to show up everyday and be ready to work, then good things will happen. I think that if people just kind of come and go, no one really knows if everyone will be there, and therefore they’re not motivated. If there is no activity going on in the room then it’s depressing to be there. That’s why I play music sometimes. Everybody is listening to the same music and it distracts everybody and is an icebreaker; we are all listening to music and doing our stuff together diligently.
John SandellAssociate Professorarchitecture
What is one thing that specifically motivates or inspires you? My belief in the human necessity of both sacred and profane cultural signs
What advice do you have for the design student? Establish a rigorous work ethic, and seek out and construct your own poetic autobiography in work and life. P.S. Don’t be afraid to “play” (in the Gadamerian sense of the word).
Deidre HardyDirector and Professorarchitecture
What do you feel is on the horizon in the field of design?Challenges to work in collaborative efforts with other design professionals.
Are there any specific books that you would recommend for the design student?all of frank Ching’s books.
Mark FranzAssistant ProfessorCommunication and Multimedia Studies
What design magazine/publication do you read on a regular basis (online or offline)?Dezeen, Designboom, and occasionally Wallpaper.
What philosophy and techniques do you use in motivating your staff/fellow faculty members and energizing them?Classical conditioning.

This design manual and branding package has been
prepared for the exclusive use of the Center for Creative
Education and its full intent is to establish a uniform
design approach and brand identity for the organization.
The design system manual provides a foundation for a
new and clear communication of the CCE’s identity. It
ensures that the center appears consistent on all official
communications and that it gains a common “look
and feel” throughout all mediums. This design manual
includes the official guidelines and standards for the
usage of CCE’s logo and stationery including official
colors and typefaces – Enjoy!
Introduction
Reading is not necessary to identify shapes, but identifying shapes is necessary to read. The brain acknowledges distinctive shapes that make a faster imprint on memory.
The science of perception examines how individuals recognize and interpret sensory stimuli. The brain acknowledges and remembers shapes first. Visual images can be remembered and recognized directly, while words must be decoded into meaning.
Color is second in the sequence. Color can trigger an emotion and evoke a brand associa-tion. Distinctive colors need to be chosen carefully, not only to build brand awareness but to express differentiation. Companies, such as Kodak and Tiffany, have trademarked their core brand colors.
The brain takes more time to process language, so content is third in the sequence behind shape and color.

Just putting your brand on the stationery is not enough.
You need the formatting to be consistent throughout the
stationery. A consistent logo will imprint the brand image
much more easily. It also shows a united front for your
company and delivers the message that you are efficient.

The faU Designers’ Edge student group holds various annual competitions for the members of the organization. one competition is to design the new identity, or logo, for Designers’ Edge for the upcoming year. The logo is used the entire year on all of our promotional items including posters, business cards, t-shirts and other printed materials.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to have the freedom to design a logo without any limitations. This year, we chose to have our peers do the judging. We posted every logo on our facebook page and the student with the most votes, Trista lam, was our winner.

Demetrius Carter Wastewater Treatment facility Charcoal, 2013 Pen and colored pencil, 2013
In the Design Studio 8 course at faU, we did drawing exercises that were aimed to engaging in our imagination of what a lab could be. The facility I designed will be used as a study of water purification. Scientists will be studying the different techniques in which to collect wastewater, purify the water and then send it back into the city grid. This facility will also be an educational tool as students from the community will have summer school classes available to understand the importance of potable drinking water in their city!
Iuliia Fomina and Jose Daniel BernalTrimo Bike Base – Project for the Trimo Urban Crash competitionSketchUp, Photoshop and Illustrator, 2013
We challenge Trimo and its partners to energize the city! The poetics which the bicycle’s positive energy bring to the urban environment is em-bodied via human-recharged “batteries” made possible through Trimo’s modular solutions.
During the day, the battery is energized by the users, and metaphorically, in turn they go on to power the city. at night, using led strip lights mounted on the modular units, charged during the day via photovoltaic panels, our Bike Base is a glowing reminder of and what really powers the urban core: humans in motion.
