 Electrochemical systems

SRG have completed repair and restoration works to a variety of significant structures including several heritage listed buildings and bridges.

When a heritage structure is in need of rehabilitation or

preventative maintenance, it is essential that the right

method of repair be selected. It is also essential that the

work be carried out with care and precision by highly

skilled and experienced personnel.

REMEDIAL ENGINEERING CAPABILITY6

Atmospheric and environmental conditions can impact concrete structures over time, triggering reinforcement corrosion and spalling of the outer concrete layers. If left untreated, expensive problems will usually result.

SRG has the expertise to not only accurately diagnose such problems but to repair the concrete with skill and expediency.

A poorly executed repair can often reduce the structure’s life span, significantly increasing the long term maintenance costs.

Typical concrete repair works undertaken by SRG include:

Repair of concrete spalling (often referred to as ‘concrete cancer’)

 Render repair

Crack repair by full depth epoxy injection

Treatment and/or replacement of corroded reinforcement

 Cathodic protection

 Application of protective coatings

 Specialised in-house design

Slab strengthening utilising near surface mounted carbon fibre strengthening techniques

Adding strength to an existing structure is usually

a complex challenge. Whether through age,

deterioration, substandard construction or change of

use, it means that the present structure is no longer

able to support the loads it needs to carry.

Unfortunately, many facades suffer premature deterioration to the degree that weather proofing of structural integrity is compromised. Facade refurbishment involves determining the true causes of such problems and then applying the appropriate solutions.

Rectifying defective facades can often be highly challenging, as problems may only be apparent under particular weather conditions and access for close examination is usually difficult. This is where the expertise of SRG is an advantage.

With years of experience solving tough problems, we know that only a totally professional approach will be successful. Whether heritage cottage or post modern skyscraper, concrete, brick or glass.

SRG undertakes all manner of facade restoration, including:

 Detailed examination and reporting

 Reinstatement of weather sealing

 Window system replacement

 Precast concrete repairs

 Masonry spalling or cracking

 Lintel replacement

 Decorative finishes and surface coatings

 Concrete and render repair

Failure of waterproofing can lead to a rapid escalation of costs, underscoring the critical role played by waterproofing in today’s structures.

SRG have been installing waterproofing systems for over 30 years. Our total independence from product suppliers guarantees that we always specify the system which best suits each project. In addition, all works are meticulously planned and supervised by professional project managers, resulting in industry leading quality standards.

Typical waterproofing works undertaken by SRG include:

 Roof waterproofing and drainage works

Construction joint remediation within liquid retaining structures

 Facade, concrete and render repairs

Treatment of external terraces and balconies

 Injection water stopping

Application of waterproofing

Waterproofing systems are the main barrier preventing

water from penetrating into buildings through roofs,

walls and exposed balconies.

WATERPROOFING

REMEDIAL ENGINEERING CAPABILITY 13

SRG utilises epoxy resins with viscosities close to that of water to penetrate into micro-cracks as fine as five hundredths of a millimeter, re-establishing the monolithic nature of the concrete.

Principal causes of concrete cracking may include:

 Shrinkage during curing

 Construction joints

 Thermal shock

 Extreme atmospheric pressure

 Overload

 Usage conditions

 Seismic activity

 Differential settlement

 Human error

The very small cracks which develop under these various conditions create the risk of further cracking under load and hence the cycle of deterioration is accelerated.

Until recently, open cracks were sealed superficially with various flexible sealants. This method of repair ignored the presence of problems deeper in the crack. As a consequence,

the repair method failed to stop the eventual corrosion of reinforcement.

To obtain a complete structural repair, it became necessary to develop a system using resins which were capable of being distributed uniformly throughout the whole crack and to full depth of the cracked element. Such resins require the following characteristics:

Mechanical properties superior to or equal to the concrete

Perfect adherence throughout the crack, even in damp or saturated conditions

Resistance to water and to thermal shock

Capability of use in extreme climatic conditions

SRG uses high strength epoxy resins that are injected into the cracks. The equipment used for injection is fully automatic. It guarantees the correct and thorough mixing of the resin components using individual pumps with component mixing in the injection headpiece.

Crack injection repairs

Crack repair technology has dramatically changed in

recent years providing superior protection and strength

compared to previous methods.

STRUCTURAL CRACK REPAIR

REMEDIAL ENGINEERING CAPABILITY14

Cathodic protection prevents corrosion from occurring by inhibiting the electrical process that causes the corrosion.

This can be achieved either by applying a low-level current to the structure or adding sacrificial anodes to it. The exciting recent development of chloride removal and realkanisation uses a similar impressed-current approach to restore a correct chemical balance to a deteriorated concrete.

Cathodic protection is a highly technical field and SRG has a successful track record on major government and infrastructure projects.

Typical cathodic protection services offered by SRG include:

 Bridge protection

 Jetty and wharf protection

 Foundation protection

 Carbonation correction (realkanisation)

 Removal of chlorides (desalination)

Connection of titanium anodes

Cathodic protection systems use electrochemical

techniques to control the deterioration of steel or

concrete. Once limited to just protecting steelwork or

rebar, CP-based systems now exist to address the major

concrete problems of carbonation and chloride attack.
