Remembering the Pittsburgh Shooting Victims
We often ask ourselves whether the Museum’s message is relevant enough. Are we reaching visitors who are generations removed from the Holocaust?
The devastating murders and casualties at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh were a terrible reminder that our work teaching the history and lessons of the Holocaust is more important than ever. Changing the hearts and minds of those who visit our Museum is essential to ensuring that people understand the horrific real-life consequences of anti-Semitism. And recent events in Pittsburgh make that work all the more urgent.
The man arrested for this massacre told police, “I just want to kill Jews.” One of his neighbors said, “He just seemed like a normal guy, and that’s the scary part.”
Our mission is to empower the 30,000 visitors who tour our space each year and motivate the thousands more who attend our lectures and exhibits to speak up when they witness discrimination and abuse. We also remain committed to promoting civil dialogue during this time when it might be difficult to do so. It’s important that we practice love in this time of hate.
I am writing to directly thank our staff and volunteers for the sacred work you do every day and to reaffirm our pledge to continue bringing our message to the broader community. To our donors — none of our work is possible without your generosity.
If you are not involved with the Museum, I invite you to join our mission. Make a donation, take a tour, learn more through our website (HMLC.org) and — most importantly — become a voice for change by actively rejecting all forms of hate, intolerance, racism, and bigotry.
The names of those who perished in Pittsburgh are on the cover of this publication. They include two brothers, a couple married more than 60 years ago in the synagogue where they were gunned down, and a great-grandmother. May their memories be a blessing.
And let us not forget those who were injured, including other synagogue members and police officers who courageously ran toward danger when called to help.

Kirshenblatt Lecture On Thursday, October 11, Dr. Barbara KIrshenblatt-Gimblett, Chief Curator of the Core Exhibition at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, spoke to a large audience at the Kaplan Feldman Complex, on the subject of “What’s Happening with Poland? The Role of Museums in Historical Debates.”
The speaker posited that recent efforts in Poland to dictate how the history of the Holocaust should be told have placed museums in the crosshairs of the politics of history and have led to misunderstandings and historical distortions. Focusing on the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Dr. Kirshenblatt-Gimblett explored how museums can serve as “zones of trust,” where difficult historical moments can be addressed.
Dan Reich, stated, “We were so pleased to collaborate with Saint Louis Polonia in bringing such an esteemed speaker to St. Louis and have her present such a pertinent, timely lecture.”

Our Special Visit to the HMLC After PittsburghOn October 29, students and faculty at Yeshivat Kadimah High School participated in an extraordinary trip to the Holocaust Museum & Learning Center. The trip was especially moving in light of the recent tragedy in Pittsburgh. The visit began with a guided tour that took our group through the exhibits at the Center. In the middle of the tour, our group had the opportunity to hear from Vera Emmons, daughter of Holocaust survivor Gerda Nothmann Luner. Vera spoke about her mother’s memoir (Gerda’s Story: Memoir of a Holocaust Survivor), and showed video clips of her mother recalling the events of the 1930s and 1940s. The story and recollections were very powerful, and the presentation was a highlight of the trip. After the presentation, we concluded the tour with a discussion about genocide and the lessons we can learn from events of the past. Finally, upon leaving the Center, students saw a touching display of the names of the 11 victims from the Tree of Life Synagogue, each with a candle next to it. When we arrived back at school, we read the names of the 11 victims and dedicated our learning seder and all learning throughout the week in their memory.
Annual Rubin Feldman Memorial Lecture The Annual Rubin Feldman Memorial Lecture was delivered by Rabbi Shmuel Klein, on Sunday, October 28. Dr. Klein’s presentation, “Stars That Pierced the Darkness: Jewish Heroism in the Face of Evil,” addressed profiles of valor among Jews during the Shaoh, as well as the characteristics that enabled these courageous acts.
This program, which celebrates the memory and legacy of Rubin Feldman, was sponsored by the Rubin (z”l) and Gloria Feldman Family Educational Institute of the Holocaust Museum & Learning Center, a department of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, and AISH St. Louis.
Dan Reich, HMLC Curator and Director of Education, stated, “We were so pleased to collaborate with AISH St. Louis in bringing this annual program to the St. Louis community. The ‘stars the pierced the darkness’ — acts of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, don’t always get the attention they deserve. Rabbi Klein brilliantly illuminated this important subject.”
Ride2Remember HMLC will be hosting the Jewish Motorcyclist Alliance on Friday, May 17, 2019. They sponsor an annual conference entitled Ride2Remember and raise money for the local Holocaust Museum. We are thrilled to welcome them and look forward to giving them an opportunity to raise awareness about our local Museum.
Lory Cooper Joins HMLC When Lory Cooper was an HMLC docent, she would start every tour by saying, “Judaism teaches that you can honor those who passed by living righteously in their memory.”
She was able to do that for her grandparents, Simon and Bobbie Kohn, of blessed memory, with every tour, and now she honors them every day as the Museum’s new Manager of Programs and Logistics.
Lory’s family ties with the Jewish Federation of St. Louis stretch back to 1949, when Federation sponsored Simon and Bobbie’s immigration from post-war Germany to St. Louis.
They knew nothing of St. Louis. But having lived on the Danube, they were happy to see that it sat at the confluence of two great rivers. Lory recalls that family legend has it that Bobbie exclaimed, “‘Oh Simon, we will get to go to the beach in the summers!’ She was very disappointed.”
But the family stayed in St. Louis and thrived here. Simon and Bobbie would go on to found Simon Kohn’s Kosher Deli.
As for Lory, she would go to Northwestern University and then spend time in Israel teaching English and farming chickens before returning to St. Louis in 2010. She didn’t know about the family’s connection to Federation until she joined YPD and later came to work at The J as a Youth Program Supervisor.
When she heard about Andrew Goldfeder’s departure from the Museum to become Executive Director at Temple Emanuel, Lory wasn’t sure she wanted to give up the fun of swimming and playing with kids all day. But her connection to the Museum and Federation is strong, and she was excited by the chance to use her passion for education to help the Museum grow.
In addition to scheduling tours and coordinating docents, the Manager of Programs and Logistics position will have a new component as Lory uses her experience in education to reach out to and coordinate with local educators.
And, of course, for Lory this new chapter in her life is another opportunity to honor her grandparents.

Educators WorkshopWith the generous support of the Missouri Humanities Council, the St. Louis Holocaust Museum & Learning Center (HMLC) presented a summer institute for teachers on effective teaching of the Holocaust and its lessons. A dozen educators from throughout the state, including New Madrid and Peculiar, gathered at Webster University from June 17 through 20 for an immersive pedagogic experience.
Coordinated by Dana Humphrey and Lolle Boettcher, both Teacher Fellows for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and active committee members of the HMLC’s education committee, participants attended workshops facilitated by scholars and specialists from Webster University, Washington University, and a representative of the HMLC.
The focus of the institute was to educate and provide teachers with resources and strategies to teach the challenging subject of the Holocaust in their classrooms. Beginning with a rationale and best practices for dealing with this complex material, sessions delved into issues including pre-war Jewish life, collaboration and complicity, the legacy of Nuremberg, and using film and literature in the classroom.
This workshop, held at the HMLC, also focused on the Museum’s archival holdings and permanent collection. Participants heard the powerful testimony of a child survivor of the Holocaust, as well as “2nd and 3rd generation” testimonies — family histories presented by the children and grandchildren of survivors.
As one participant noted, “I hope to awaken in my students the compassion to care and the resolve to end all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and persecution against all other human beings, no matter their faith, creed, or ethnicity. Workshops like this teachers institute are extremely beneficial because they help me learn the best pedagogical methods to use with my students.”
Recent surveys have indicated that with the passing of time, knowledge, and awareness of the Holocaust is decreasing. Yet, the lessons resonating from the Holocaust remain more relevant than ever. In a state like Missouri, which doesn’t mandate Holocaust education, the HMLC’s strategy has been to stress the importance of this material and enable teachers by providing the necessary resources so that educators feel equipped to teach this important, multilayered history.

Irl,
I have been reading and answering texts/emails since our departure from the Museum. I am not halfway done yet. “Heart-touching” could not sum up all the expressed emotion and knowledge gained today. I believe both Jews and Gentiles were blessed, as one, under the umbrella of truth. It is such, Irl, that the Almighty has allowed our paths to cross. For it is the truth that makes one free in mind and soul for which we both strive.
Truly, the blessing was in our favor to listen and learn. Many positive comments about you and Devy keeping the thought process in order. The personal insight from you both, of certain pictures, was engraved upon Gentile minds permanently.
Of course, there are not sufficient words to encompass Mendel’s testimony. A highlight of the day and wonderful forethought by you to arrange after the tour. His spirited comments and ability to inspire others to overcome adversity was amazing. At almost 90, his quick wit and direct answers were an encouragement to all.
The half has truly not been told as now the students of today’s classroom depart to their various homes and congregations. Well done.

Our Cup Runneth Over The visit of about 90 members of Dr. Bryan Sharp’s Gentile Ministry to the HMLC on July 31, matched our highest expectations. They were very impressed by their earlier visit to Rabbi Ze’ev Smason and his synagogue, Nusach Hari B’nai Zion, followed by the Museum visit. Participants came from Evangelical churches all over: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Mississippi, as well as St. Louis.
Thanks to the work of my docent partner, Devy Goldenberg. It’s not easy to maneuver 90 visitors through the museum in two VERY large groups, but we succeeded. Mendel Rosenberg’s Survivor Testimony was overwhelmingly well received by our guests; he is a gem as he nears his 90th birthday. Sadly, Mendel is our last active speaker who survived the camps.
Holding it all together was Dr. Bryan Sharp and his able assistants. After leading a spirited rendition of “Am Yisrael Chai,” he suggested that we make this an annual visit of Gentile Ministry members. AMEN!

Survivors, veterans, and descendants: Please consider donating memorabilia relating to the Holocaust or pre-WWII life, documents, immigration papers, or artifacts brought back from the war. Those crumbling papers and military souvenirs, so important to a parent or grandparent, would be a welcome addition to the HMLC’s archival collection. Documents and artifacts would be respectfully preserved.

The Museum opened in 1995 with first-hand survivor stories and memorabilia that serve to follow through with the Museum’s mission statement: “Through the lessons of the Holocaust, we inspire all people to confront hatred, promote human dignity and prevent genocide.” While it’s a sobering experience, it definitely serves as an invaluable lesson in humanity’s history.
