Year 3 Advent Window Project

On Monday Year 3 worked with a local artist (Laura Brenchley) to create a life-size model of Simeon the shepherd for the ‘Advent Window’ project. Working in partnership with The Auckland Project, the art work has been modelled on the Zurbarán paintings by Spanish artist: Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) a master of the Spanish Golden Age of painting! A collection of his work is housed in Auckland Castle and it is one of the largest collections of Zurbaráns in the world! (Go to the Auckland Project website to find out more)

The children’s ‘Advent Window’ art work will be unveiled on Tuesday 10th December at The British Heart Foundation, 124 Newgate Street in Bishop Auckland town centre. From Christmas Eve it will be displayed in the chapel at Auckland Castle and families are welcome to visit.

Year 5 Class Worship

Year 5 led our worship on Friday 25 October and based it upon our school value of friend-

ship and what it means to be a good friend. The whole class was amazing and there were

some brilliant performances and singing. Well done to all of Year 5.

Art @ Barrington

On Wednesday 6th November, Year 4 had their 2nd

visit to Bishop Barrington to enjoy an art workshop

with Mrs Coulton. This time, they experimented

with a technique called scraffito which involves

scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer

of a contrasting colour. The children used brightly

coloured oil pastels to cover the paper then lightly

painted over this with black poster paint. Then, us-

ing observational drawing skills, they copied one of

a variety of Roman portrait pictures onto the art-

work using a sharp pencil. The oil colours shone

through the paint to create an effective design

which could then be laminated and cut into a coin

shape. The children loved it and are looking forward

to their next visit in the spring term.

Are you a scientist?

If you are a scientist, use science in your work or have a particular interest in an area of science we need you!

Would you be willing to come into school and talk to the children about your job, or how you used science to get the job you have now or even why you enjoy a particular aspect of science? It is entirely up to you how you deliver the session (maybe 30 mins) e.g. a chat, photos, Powerpoint, show some resources.

I was thinking provisionally to hold the sessions Tuesday 19th to Friday 22nd November 2019. If you are interested in coming into school, please complete the reply slip sent home with your child and return to school as soon as possible.

Thank you

Mrs Millar
