Dear Families, It is nothing like starting the year with a few challenges to get us all into the groove and our minds
back on the job quickly!
A massive 'thank you' to all of our families who supported us during the power outages. Having it
happen once was one thing, but to have it go out twice in as many school days was another!
The challenge we faced was that there was only minimal power to some areas of the school which
meant that the 3 refrigerated Air Conditioning systems were getting some power (1 in library, 1 in 4/5/6J and
1 in the main office were only receiving enough power to work the fans but not cool). Luckily the science wing
still has evaporative cooling so it was only the fan that was needed as town mains was supplying the water to
them. With temperatures well above 40 on both days, families who were able to collect children enabled us
to keep remaining students comfortable and cool on such a dreadful day. With no lights, computers, internet
or other systems the children and staff were wonderful, adapting for the day to keep things running.
Our biggest thanks must go out to our Parents’ Club who funded our new SMS system which really
earnt it's worth on both days.

Family and Staff Welcome BBQ
- Tuesday, February 11th, 2014
Each year we like to offer the opportunity
for everyone to get together early in the year. It is
a great way to meet your child's classroom
teacher and other staff or have a catch up over a
snag… from 5.30pm.
We are also making every effort to give
everyone a chance to come along, at a time that
suits them, so again this year we will have a
picnic lunch as a further way to meet everyone.
Families, immediate and extended are welcome
to attend either or both of these catchups.
An information letter and RSVP has been
sent home with students early this week.
We are really looking forward to seeing lots of
people there.
School Camps
During term 4 last year we let families know
of the upcoming camps in this first term and
recommended that families begin making payments
although exact costing was not established at that
time. Please ensure you receive the note, going
home with your child today for all children in years 3
to 6, regarding their camp cost, deposit and
payment options.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you
wish to discuss your personal payment options as
we have a number of ways we can set these up for
you.
School Uniform
I am really pleased to see most of our
families supporting our uniform policy and ensuring
full uniform, including black shoes are worn to
school. For those still to purchase the black shoes
they are readily available from many shoe stores
and other outlets, we would appreciate your
attending to this as soon as possible as it is a
compulsory component of the school policy.

A rrival or Departure from school
If you pick your child up from school or your child walks or rides home, please note that all children are to
leave via the Robertson St gate. This gate is supervised every afternoon.
Should you be late to pick your children up, they will be taken to the office to wait. If possible, a phone
call to the school means your child won’t be stressed, should you be late.
Please check bike helmets on a regular basis, to ensure they are safe and fit properly.
S chool Council
play a vital role in the operations of our school, we are lucky to have a supportive and enthusiastic school
council and we have our first meeting on Tuesday, 18th February at 7.00pm
Our annual election will be held this term so we encourage anyone who has a genuine interest in
supporting our school to consider becoming a member and be involved in the ‘grass roots’ aspect of our
school. Being on the School Council involves a commitment to attend meetings with an open mind. Other
than this you can put as much time in as you choose around your busy life style
For more information around becoming involved please contact either myself, Jane Hando (SC
President), school office staff or any of our current Councillors.
C ompulsory Sun Smart Hats.
A reminder to all parents that broadbrim hats are compulsory in terms One and Four. Students
who don’t have a Sun Smart hat will be directed to play in a designated shade area.
S chool Uniform
Nathalia Primary School is proud of our students and we expect our students to show pride in our school.
Full School Uniform is expected to be worn daily.
Bright shoes, laces or socks, makeup, nail polish or any jewellery will not be accepted. Please support
your child to build a sense of pride in themselves and our school by wearing full uniform.
V isiting the school
A reminder to everyone that we have a policy which requires all visitors to report to the office first
when entering the school.
Should you need to visit the classroom, see your child at recess or are a helper at school, please
report to the office first and make sure that you sign the visitor’s book and pick up your visitor’s tag. This
ensures that in an emergency we are able to account for all people at school.
2014 School Leaders
It is my pleasure to introduce our 2014 stu-
dent leaders.
These young people were elected late in
2013 and have already shown amazing leader-
ship skills. I am looking forward to working with
the student leaders as we continue to build our
school into an outstanding place to be!
Congratulations to these young people, you
are a great example for our school.
Captains : Madelon Lindsay and Adam Zammit
Vice Captains : Evie Hawks and Gavin Goodie.

S chool Diaries
Every child has been given a 2014 diary.
This should be used as a communication
diary between classroom teacher and home. Your
child’s learning requires a partnership between
home and school.
S chool Fees - 2014
The schedule of fees payable for 2014 has
been sent home last week. Fees can be paid at
the office or online - the school also has EFTPOS/
credit card facilities. Payment schedules can also
be arranged by contacting the Principal.
Could all parents please read this carefully.
Fees are now due and prompt payment would
be appreciated.
Please remember that EDUCATION is NOT FREE.
Government Schools are allocated staff that does
not cost families. However, there is a cost of
providing books, requisites and resources. If you
would like to discuss a payment plan please
contact me, but PLEASE don't ignore the fees, it
only places additional strain on other budget
areas and ultimately impacts on our school and
students.
S chool Calendar for 2014
A draft copy of this year’s calendar has been
included on page 7 of this Newsletter. PLEASE BE
AWARE that this is a draft and may be subject to
changes. You will be notified of any changes via
the Newsletter and this calendar.
C anteen Price List for 2014
There are changes to the Price List.
The new prices have been included on page
6 of this Newsletter.
Copies are available from the school office.

O ur School Values For Staff, students and families
Respect - for self & others Learning - is a life long journey Honesty - to self and others Team Work - is about getting along.
W ater and Fruit Break
The children are encouraged to bring a water
bottle into the classroom to sip throughout the day. It
is preferred that this bottle not be put into the freezer
as the condensation makes a mess. All bottles
should have a sipper top to prevent spillage. Drink
bottles for recess and lunch may be frozen, as they
keep lunches cool in the bags.
At 10.00am and 12.30pm each day the
children are allowed to have a fruit break. This
should be something that is ‘gobble, gobble gone’.
The best fruits are those that are not juicy. Oranges
are not suitable for Fruit Break. If a child takes 15
minutes to eat or has to wash their hands after
eating then it is a distraction and wastes valuable
learning time. Sticky or juicy fruits should be left for
recess or lunchtime. Fruit cut up into bite size pieces
is encouraged but please ensure the containers are
labelled with your child’s name.
L unch Arrangements
All students are required to eat their
lunch between 1.30pm and 1.40pm. Classroom
teachers will release students when they have eaten
their lunch.
Lunch orders are prepared at Nathalia
Secondary College canteen 5 days a week. They are
delivered to the school and classroom monitors take
these to their classroom for distribution. A lunch
price list has been included in this Newsletter.
It is School Council Policy that no child is to
leave the school grounds without the permission of
their parents.
The permission may take the form of a note
or a personal call to the school. Children saying that
they have parental permission to leave the grounds
is not acceptable.
As a result of this or if your child forgets to
put in their lunch order or leaves their lunch at home,
sandwiches will be provided at 50 cents per round.
B us Travel
If your child is not to go home
on the bus, we need a note or a phone
call from an adult. Your child telling us
they are not on the bus is not
sufficient. (as they often get confused)
If you pick your child up, you
need to update the white board in the
office so that the bus captain’s job is
made as easy as possible. The
children’s safety is of prime
importance.

A rt Room Request
Working in the Art Room can be
messy so it would be appreciated if all
children had an art shirt to wear. It
doesn’t have to be anything fancy - an
old shirt from Dad, Granddad or big
brother would be ideal.
REMEMBER YOUR JUNK COULD
BE OUR TREASURE.
We are always happy to receive
recyclable items for use in our art
program.

D aily Timetable
It is expected that all students
arrive at school at least 10 minutes prior to the
8.50am bell. Children need to arrive and be ready to learn.
Arriving late impacts on a child’s learning and sense of “knowing
what is happening” at a very high level and often these children
fall behind in their schooling and loose interest. Lets give all our
children the best chance by arriving on time.
Teachers are responsible for the supervision of children
from 8.45am until 3.30pm.
Students are not permitted inside the school building out
of class time, unless under direct supervision of a staff member.
During recess and lunch times there are always 2 staff
members on duty to ensure adequate supervision.
The Daily Timetable for 2014 is as follows:-
First Bell - 8.50am
Assembly: Monday morning at 9.00am.
8.50am - Reading Groups
9.00 - 11.00am - Session One
11.00 - 11.30am - Recess
11.30 – 1.30pm - Session Two
1.30 - 2.20pm - Lunch
2.50 – 3.20pm - Session Three
3.15pm - first dismissal, bus travellers only.
3.20pm - 2nd dismissal bell, town or non bus travelling students
dismissed.
P arent/Teacher Interviews
These will be conducted on Monday, February 24th and
Tuesday, February 25th. Notes and return slips will be handed
out this week.
It is really important that you meet with your classroom teacher
and discuss your child’s progress.

teachers in the Arts or Science areas, please let us know. I will
also be available if you would like to catch up. Please note your
