Born on 15th October 1955, Dr..J.S.Rawat is presently National Geospatial Chair Professor of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and Professor and Head of the Department of Geography Kumaun University. Prof. Rawat is also Director of Centre of Excellence for Natural Resources Data Management Centre of Uttarakhand (COE NRDMS); Coordinator of MSc Remote Sensing and GIS Course of Kumaun University; and Director of Uttarakhand Centre on Climate Change. He is Gold Medalist of the Kumaun University and has been Fulbright Fellow USA in 1988. Prof. Rawat joined Kumaun University SSJ Campus Almora as a lecturer in Geography in 1980. He achieved Indian National Science Academy Young Scientist Travel Award in 1986 to represent India in West Germany in an International Conference on Geomorphology. Dr.Rawat was awarded Senior Fulbright Fellowship by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars,
Washington, D. C.,USA, in 1988. Recently Prof Rawat has inducted MSc Degree in hi-tech Geospatial Technologies, viz., Remote Sensing and GIS in Kumaun University through CEO NRDMS and has developed GIS based “Coordinated Action Plan for Rejuvenation of Dying Kosi River” in District Almora which has been included in the State Action Plan -2018-2019 by the State Government of Uttarakhand.With the technical support of Prof Rawat, since the last six years, the State Government of Uttarakhand has created GIS Cells under the control of District Magistrates at each district headquarter for upgradation of exiting e-Governance system into GIS based g-Governance system for efficient, transparent, good and decentralized governance in the State.
Prof. Rawat has published about 122 research papers in international/national journals/books; written
three books; participated in 15 International conferences including in Canada, Germany and China; participated in 89 conferences/expert committee meetings in India; and has supervised about one dozen Research Projects on Geographic Information Science, Environmental Geomorphology, Environmental Hydrology GIS and Remote Sensing funded by the Department of Science and Technology,Government of India; University Grants Commission, New Delhi; Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology, Dehradun; and Uttarakhand Science and Education Research Centre, Dehradun; organized 59 workshops and seminars for capacity building of the country in applications of geospatial technologies(GIS/GPS) in governance and for environmental management; and has also supervised ten Doctoral thesis in Geography.
Beside the Kumaun University, Professor Rawat has served G.B.Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Katarmal as Scientist in 1989 and the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee as Scientist-E & Head of Regional Centre, Hydrology of Hard Rock Region, Belgaum in 1994. Prof. Rawat has also served Directorate of Research and Extension, Kumaun University as its Joint Director during 2009-11; presently looking after the Education programmes on MSc Remote Sensing and GIS as its Coordinator; is Senior Editor of the "International Journal of Advanced Earth Science and Engineering"; and is also Resource Person of Uttarakhand Judicial and Legal Academy; Academy of Uttarakhand Administration; and UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Kumaun University. For his distinguished contribution in education and research works in Geography specially in the field of Geomorphology, Hydrology and GIScience, Prof.Rawat has been honored by the American Geophysical Union as an Elected Member of the American Geophysical Union in 1989; by the Governing Council of the New York Academy of Sciences as an Active Member of The New York Academy of Sciences in 1995; by the Geological Society of India as Fellow of Geological Society of India in 1998; as Kumaun Gaurav Samman in 2013; and by India International Friendship Society and International Institute as Bharat Jyoti Samman and Glory of India Gold Medal, in 2013, as Bharat Gaurav Samman in 2016; and as National Geospatial Chair Professor of Department of Science and Technology by the DST New Delhi in 2018.In 2018 he also achieved Government of India, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation First Prize from in the National Water Award 2018 in the category of the best district river revival.Contact: 07533983533, [email protected]
