CANCELLATION POLICY: If a class is canceled, you will be notified by phone and issued a full refund within 30

business days. If you wish to withdraw from a class, please notify the Renaissance Academy at 941-505-0130 no

later than 5:00 pm three (3) business days prior to the first session of the class in order to receive a refund.

Individuals who cancel after the start of the class will not receive a refund. Unless otherwise stated, a fourteen

(14) business day notice is required for refunds on all special programs (SP).

The gentle, flowing movements of Tai Chi promote better health, leg strength, and an overall feeling of well-being, according

This heartwarming and poignant award winner is mesmerizing and witty story of strangers in a strange

land. A fading Egyptian police band arrives in Israeli to play at the Arab Cultural Center. When they take

the wrong bus, the band members find themselves in a desolate Israeli village. With no other option than to

spend the night with the local townspeople, the two distinctly different cultures realize the universal bond

Katyn describes the tragedy of a generation. The film follows the story of four Polish families whose lives

are torn apart when, at the outset of WWII, a great number of Polish soldiers (who are also fathers,

husbands and brothers) fall into the hands of Soviet troops and later brutally become victims of Stalinism.

The film also underlines the complicated circumstances of Poland’s position both in the war and after.

With the birth of Israel in 1948, the Jewish homeland was reborn after 2500 years of spiritual and 75 years of political

Zionism. Israel, however, was born in strife and its existence hinged on the ability to survive repeated assaults by opponents

of the Jewish state. In this short course, explore the roots of the conflict, the regions nationalistic movements, and Israel’s

struggle for survival. In the 21st century, a new Palestinian Authority and Israeli government agreed to Israeli withdrawals

from occupied territories. Examine the options available to Israel and its Arab neighbors today. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

management to their spouse and almost 90% of women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point in their life.

Single, married, widowed, it is imperative that women at least ‘Know what they don’t know” so they can manage their

finances and protect themselves. Over the course of 4 weeks, you will learn the basics in a comfortable environment with

Catching specific fish species demands that fishers rig their gear in certain ways. Captain Van

Hubbard explains how to rig fishing tackle specifically suited to catch trout, redfish, Snook, and

other species common to Charlotte Harbor. He explains why fishers must match gear selections to

target species and how best to cast for and land the catch.

Master the Rod & Reel: Effective Fishing Tools, Your Arm’s Extension $15

Invest 1.5 hours to enhance your fishing experiences to understand and feel how your rod, reel and

Elements of Photography I __________ _ _ $60

With the invention of the digital negative there had to be a way to "develop" the photos. There are different programs out

there; however one of the most popular choices is Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements allows the photographer to

organize their photos and enhance them to make them look their best. The instructor will show you the tips and techniques

that the pros use to get their photos to jump off the page. We will cover the organizer, Camera RAW, layers, masking,

adjustment layers, filters and tools. Students will also learn how to get their prints to match their screen. The instructor will


provide practice files for the students to use and take home for practice. Students entering the class should have a working

knowledge of how to use a computer - PC or Mac. It is recommended that they use a flash drive/memory stick to save their

Journal/Travel Writing: Record with Eloquence/Flare $80

This course sharpens your narrative techniques and copy editing skills as they apply to journal and travel writing, whether

your trips are around the corner, a sojourn, a weekly ritual or circle the globe. Participants will bone up on style, discuss

attributes of crisp, vibrant prose, and complete daily, entries in a journal or log book. Fee includes 2 to 3 personal critiquing

The Age of Flying Boats & International Air Travel _____________ _________ ___$10

The era of the flying boats lasted only a decade or so. Their ability to land on water during a time when there were few

airports around the world was critical to the birth of international passenger air travel. We will discuss the pioneers who

international route systems were developed while overcoming immense obstacles and utilizing the ever increasing size and

History of Jazz in America $65

Originating at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States, jazz spans

diverse sub-genres from Ragtime to 2000s-era fusion. Jazz is defined as a "form of art music which originated in the United

States through the confrontation of blacks with European music"; characterized by, "a spontaneity and vitality of musical

production in which improvisation plays a role." Dr. Robert Peterson traces the History of Jazz in America from its

This class picks up where "Part 1" left off (see page 8). In this class we will look at some advanced techniques that will help

your photography. We will look at subjects such as removing blemishes on peoples' faces, removing unwanted objects with

the clone tool, using the "tourist remover", the correct way to create black and whites, and how to stich panoramas for

breathtaking views. Students entering the class should have a working knowledge of how to use a computer - PC or Mac. It is


recommended that they use a flash drive/memory stick to save their work unless they are using their own computer. Class fee

Diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Ewert, a 59-year old retired computer professor, is

deteriorating rapidly. As the incurable disease ravages his body, Ewert, a Chicago native, decides

to pursue a physician-assisted suicide, before losing the option to die without unbearable suffering.

Granted unique access Zaritsky traces Ewert’s journey to Switzerland where with the help of

Dignitas, a nonprofit that has assisted in more than 1,000 physician-assisted suicides since 1998,

he debates the morality of and confronts the reality of choosing the option to die.

present the very real possibility of the war dragging on long after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Florida played a significant

role and provided the escape route of the Confederate secretary of state, secretary of war, and attorney general. SW Florida,

in particular, was the locale of the U.S's last chance to capture the number three man in the Confederate national government.

This four-week interactive course in pastel technique will be geared to beginning or intermediate-level students, using a

method designed to build confidence and encourage experimentation. The course offers guided instruction while encouraging

creative expressions. Starting with basic exercises to become familiar with various methods of pastel application as well as

with several kinds of surfaces, we will proceed to the preliminary steps of three pastel painting. The final session will be

reserved for putting the finished touches on the most successful of the three. For those who are eager to return to a former

interest or to discover a new pastime, this course will bring with it a creative challenge as well as moments of pure pleasure.

Martha R. Bireda, Ph.D., has been an equity consultant for twenty years in issues related to race, gender, and cultural

diversity. She is founder of the Blanchard House Museum of African American History and Culture and author of six books.

Susan Cain is a professional Note Broker in Punta Gorda.

Alex Crandall, M.D. is a retired psychiatrist with 35 years of experience in therapy, research and teaching.

Linda Coules is currently an investment manager with Edward Jones investments.

Benjamin Crosby, Ph.D. earned his doctoral degree in Political Science and with a regional specialization in Latin America,

where he lived for 18 years. He has been a research scholar at the Overseas Development Council in Washington D.C., and

was a Director of MSI, an international development consulting organization.

Steven Derfler, Ph.D. is a Professor of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Ahmed Elrefai, Ph.D. graduated from Ohio State University with a Doctorate in Engineering. He has lectured on Islam and

related subjects at public libraries, Islamic and religious institutions, and private and public schools and colleges.

Sharon Fultz is a Tai Chi practitioner and has been an instructor since 1995.

Ted Goodwin is Founder and Past President of the Final Exit Network and Past President of the World Federation on of

Right to Die Societies.

John Guerra is a graduate of Columbia University, former Wall Street merchant banker, and the FGCU Director of

generation descendant of the first

Dutch families. He was also a historian for NY State of the Great Mansions on the Hudson.

Frank Kavanaugh, Ph.D., is Chairman Emeritus of the International Academy for Preventive Medicine, former Professor at

Robert Macomber is an internationally recognized award-winning maritime writer, lecturer, television commentator, and

defense consultant.

Carol Mahler is a storyteller, singer-songwriter, author, and teacher. Carol Mahler founded the Peace River Center for

Writers and has served as scholar, discussion leader, and project director for public humanities programs.


Jeanna Morrow feels as though she was reborn at 50 when her husband introduced her to Latin dance. She had never danced

before. She attended classes for 2 years and then earned the Zumba Basic Instructor certification.

Edith Pendleton, PhD. holds a degree in contemporary Literature from the University of South Florida, and a Master degree

in Journalism from the University of Missouri. Her work appears in Science News Magazine, National Geographic

Magazine, World Magazine, and various newspapers. Her book, Too Old to Cry, Too Young to Die, records the experience of

teenagers with cancer.

Robert Peterson, Ph.D. grew up in Kansas City and enjoyed many of the jazz greats who got their start there. He played

jazz professionally for a few years.

Spencer Pullen currently owns Premiere Graphics in Port Charlotte. He shoots pictures of everything from food for dining

reviews in local magazines to portraits.

Rendell, Barbara, M. Ed. has studied food nutrition and gardening for over 36 years, and during this time she has been

growing and preserving her own fermented foods.

Winnifred Roberts became interested in the Calusa Indians and the early history of Florida while researching her own

ancestry.

Lee Stein learned the love of film from growing up in a family that owned a theater. He is the Executive Director on the

Board of The Charlotte Chorale.

Sharon Whitehill, Ph.D. earned her doctoral degree in Victorian literature, before spending more than 30 years as a

professor of English.

Thomas Williams is an alumnus of FGCU graduating in 2003 with a Master of Science Degree. He is a veteran of two wars,

and has written five historical novels.

Janis Winchester has experience in book design and publication. She worked in law enforcement and forensic science and is

a member of the Gulf Coast Writers Association and Shell Point Photo Club.

David Zipoy, Ph.D. earned is doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota before earning and completing a two-year

Post-Doctoral appointment at Cornell University. He went on to teach for 33 years at the University of Maryland, serving

eight years in the Physics Department conducting gravity research followed by 25 years in the Astronomy Department.
