Library News Dear Renaissance Academy parents:

I am so excited to be working with all of your students this year in the Library. Many of your students have probably come home telling you about contests and are becoming interested in reading. This could be because we are running two different programs to increase reading!

First is the take-home Reading Expeditions. This is an opportunity for every student to document what 10 books they read, and they will earn a prize for every 10 books read. In the younger grades they are asked to read picture books and then draw a picture or write something about it. For the upper grades we are trying to have them read from a variety of genres and write about the books as well. However, we will accept any books that are written down on the forms and turned in, as to not discourage reading. If your student doesn’t have a form, please write down the titles of the books they read on a different piece of paper and include what they liked or disliked about the book.

The Second contest is a Mystery Book Contest, where students choose books from the randomly selection coming from the many titles within our collections. Students will earn a prize if the books they check out and read are selected as one of our Mystery Collections. Examples of potential prizes include food vouchers, school supplies, and trinkets.

I have been asked many times if we accept donations of books. The answer is YES!! We will accept all donations, and then look to see what will help build our collections, so please donate. Please remember to think about readability levels for grades K-9, and hard bound copies are best. Paperbacks will be used as well to help replace those that may be torn and tattered.

Thank you for your support at the school wide BOOK FAIR! We started placing about 150 new titles in the Library already that we earned from your orders. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Mr. Wright

Space Foundation International Student Art ContestEach year, the Space Foundation International Student Art Contest invites students, ages 3 - 18, from around the world to submit original artwork based on a space-oriented theme. The 2015 contest theme, “The View From My Spaceship..,” challenges students to design their own concept of a view looking into space from a spaceship - and then interpret that idea into an original work of visual art (drawing, painting, mixed media or digital).

The Space Foundation will give a total of 25 awards to 24 winners: 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd- Place for each of age categories. In addition, the Space Foundation will confer a Space Foundation Achievement Award, which will be selected by the Space Foundation graphic arts team from among all the winners.

The Space Foundation, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA, is a global, nonprofit leader in space awareness activ-ities, educational programs that bring space into the classroom and major industry events. For more information on the organization, visit www.SpaceFoundation.org.

Visit artsonia.com/space for further information or to begin submitting artwork. (You can also find a link under the “Contest & Exhibition Opportunities” section of your teacher login area.)

LOST AND FOUNDParents: Our Lost and Found committee is making every effort to return lost items to the students. The best way for lost items to be returned is label, label, label!! We do not have the storage space at the school or the committee members’ homes to store items, so we will be donating unclaimed items to charity after 4 weeks. It is up to you and your children to check the lost and found bins and racks. They are located in the front hall of the school. Also please read the RAPP and Facebook page. If your current email is available in the school directory, we will email you. If your items are still left unclaimed, they will be donated after 4 weeks. Thank you for your help! Lost and Found Policy 2014-2015
