AOASM • 33rd Annual Clinical Conference • Distinctly Osteopathic Sports Medicine

On behalf of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Conference Planning Committee, and the city of Columbus, Ohio, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 33rd Annual Clinical Conference of the AOASM.

We are very excited to welcome everyone to the Arch City–home of The Ohio State Buckeyes, third largest capital city in America after Phoenix and Austin, and the 14th most-populous city in the nation. Columbus is ranked as the Best Big City in the Midwest by Time’s Money Magazine, tied for fifth place in American Dream Cities, No. 6 in the nation for Culture, and Forbes rates us as No. 11 for Best Places for Business and Careers and No. 1 for Opportunity Cities in the nation.

Yet, we’re also known as the Biggest Small Town in America, thanks to the friendly “we’re all family” atmosphere that Ohioans take with us wherever we go. Osteopathic medicine and sports medicine both have a strong history in Ohio, yet this is the first time the AOASM Annual Conference has been held in Ohio, and I am proud to incept this new heritage with my hometown.

This year’s conference will focus on what historically has distinguished osteopathic sports medicine physicians for over 30 years, as well as where our profession and association is leading sports medicine into the future. It’s my goal with this conference to help feed the fire for you that was ignited in me at my first AOASM conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 2000–to use the opportunity that sport and athletics have for us to grow in our understanding of the truths within the human body toward health and performance.

We have several pre-conference courses available to gain greater clinical applicability of osteopathic principles toward your patients’ care immediately. For the ninth year, we have the well-received musculoskeletal ultrasound course headed by nationally recognized expert, Albert Kozar, DO, FAOASM, RMSK, and his team of equally talented and regarded sports medicine physicians. They have offerings for both beginner and intermediate-advanced ultrasound skill sets over the two days.

We also have a one-day course on ELDOA™ Method of Exercise–Étirements Longitudinaux avec Decoaptation OsteoArticulaire–a self-treatment method of myofascial chain leveraging and joint mobilization to use as in an exercise prescription for your patients and athletes, and to maintain your own health and wellness. Created by Guy Voyer, DO (France), this course will be presented by Brian Murer, DC, SMTH, at the recommendation of my colleague, Matt Reeves, DO, who is very enthusiastic regarding the benefit this method has brought for him and his practice.

Finally, we also invited Christina Richardson, DO, FACOPMR, to present the first AOASM workshop on 3DMAPS (3D Movement Analysis and Performance System): the newest system for diagnosing and rehabilitating injuries through improving motion. Taking this course will allow you to be certified in 3DMAPS by the Gray Institute. For those not familiar with Gary Gray, PT, FAFS, or the Gray Institute, he developed the discipline of Applied Functional Science® and other great physical therapy/manual diagnosis and treatment approaches.

For the conference, we have foci on concussion from the Berlin Consensus meeting to the cutting-edge of research into the impacts of concussion on motor control and the effectiveness of OMT on sports-induced concussion. We’ll then move on to lectures and workshops on Fascial Distortion Model (FDM), ELDOA™, and OMT techniques for concussion. We have a lecture and workshop on the Anterior Chain Reaction sequence (a sub-topic of the whole 3DMAPS session); the Al Jacobs Anatomy Memorial Lecture; and kinesiotaping and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization–all with practical workshops for skill development. In addition, we’ll have presentations on the latest in stem cell therapy research, care for CrossFit athletes, sleep research on performance, ocular injury and new developments in management of retrobulbar hemorrhage, and stress management for better performance for you, the physician.

Special programs for this conference include: International Osteopathic Sports Medicine Panel reviewing the state of the world in osteopathic sports medicine; the team physician providing coverage for the largest multi-sport event in the world–the Arnold Sports Festival held right here in Columbus, Ohio–which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year; Mass Casualty Response experiences from two of our FAOASMs presenting on their experiences in Baghdad and the Boston Marathon bombing; case studies in famous people with diabetes; and SafeSport education toward protecting our athlete patients from abuses under the guise of osteopathic sports medical care.

With multiple COMs within driving distance of Columbus, we have a special opportunity to attract our osteopathic medical students for this conference–so we listened to what they wanted, according to Justin Stumph, Drs. Kate Quinn and Melissa Tabor, and the rest of the SAOASM team. To that end, we’ve built in special offerings just for students and residents, including workshops on MSK U/S, sports-focused OMT, and a fellowship fair, in addition to supporting our usual case presentations and research, fellowship panel, and exclusive student/resident/fellow lunch program. Also, we’ve made sure the double hotel rooms all have queen beds to allow for four people to share, reducing costs without sacrificing a good night’s sleep for those travelling on a budget.

All learning and no play makes the conference a dull one, so we have plenty of fun activities planned for our attendees: an obstacle course run with walls, rope ladders, and all kinds of fun challenges that we can’t describe here; a “May the Fourth Be With You” theme reception on the poolside deck after the Fellowship awards banquet; three special beers produced by Endeavor Brewing Company just for the AOASM will be available at multiple venues throughout the conference. Will you prefer “Bytomski’s Polish Porter” over “7 Hoppy Students IPA”? Only one way to find out…

With the strengthening of our association’s financial position, I’d also like to start a new tradition of giving back to the community by partnering with a local charity. This year, we will focus on the Stefanie Spielman Fund. Over the years, more than $22 million has been raised for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research and the Stefanie Spielman Patient Assistance Fund. This has funded meaningful research into treatments for cancer and helped families who struggle to afford such treatments.

On behalf of the wonderful team involved in organizing the 33rd Annual Clinical Conference, I’m honored to offer Columbus and our program for your education, networking, and fun. Both the conference and the city have much to offer, and we hope to exceed your expectations for this AOASM Clinical Conference!

Fraternally yours,

Shawn R. Kerger, DO, FAOASM

ELDOATM Level 1 Certification Monday, April 30: 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.**Tuesday, May 1: 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Course Description: This two-day course serves as a foundation to introduce the student to the ELDOA METHODTM exercises. The ELDOA method is a revolutionary set of movements developed by European Osteopath Guy Voyer, DO, more than 30 years ago. The ELDOA create space in a targeted joint, returning normal physiological movement to the articulation by leveraging knowledge of the fascial chains in the body and following the tenets of bio-tensegrity.

The ELDOA have been successfully used and perfected by Voyer for more than three decades in Europe and are now taking hold in all four North American professional sports leagues, as well as in elite individual professional sports and Olympic training camps.

This course is a mix of didactic and practical work with an emphasis on a hands-on practical experience. It covers the history and foundations of Voyer’s development of the ELDOA and how to properly perform, instruct, and prescribe the five foundational ELDOA. The ELDOA covered in the course focus on the C4-C5, T6-T7, T8-T9, and L5-S1 spinal segments, as well as the General ELDOA, which have numerous applications, notably concussion recovery protocols. Successful completion of this course prepares the student for further study in the six-part ELDOA certification program.
