RENAULT CLASSIC NEWSLETTER January 2011 – February EDITORIAL Dear enthusiasts, There are changes afoot this year! First, as you may have already noticed at the top of this Newsletter, the name of our activity is changing: from now on we shall be known as Renault Classic. This new name is evidence of the company's increased ambitions for our sector. It reflects the value and strategic importance that Renault attaches to this activity, it boosts Renault's involvement and the marque's commitment and gives greater visibility to our actions (international, new approaches etc.). This new ambition will start to be seen in the actions and events planned for the coming year, especially based around the 50th anniversary of the Renault 4: participation in the Monte-Carlo Historic Rally, Renault's return to the Rétromobile show, a return to the more usual format for the Renault World Series (we will be getting back to you really soon about this matter), a grand gathering of Renault 4s in Thenay from 15 to 17 July, an exhibition, entitled "Renault 4, 50 ans déjà" (Renault 4, 50 years old already) amongst the Bugattis and other treasures of the Cité de l'Automobile - Musée national de l'Automobile in Mulhouse, a continuation of the major effort undertaken in 2010 to upgrade and restore vehicles in the collection (no fewer than 29 projects completed in 2010) and - so soon! - preparations for the 2011 events with, once again, several major anniversaries to celebrate etc. The programme for 2011 is a full one, and all of the team here at Renault Classic sincerely hope that you will enjoy it and that it will help to make 2011 a very happy and a very passionate year for you all. Hugues Portron and the Renault Classic team NEWS 6 December Launch evening for "Générations 4L" Philippe Berthonnet, text, and Bernard Canonne, photos, have given us a book about the Renault 4 entitled "Générations 4L". Rather than a technical book or a chronology, they offer us portraits of men and women in the company of their 4L, allowing us to re-discover 4Ls from every period and of every shape, from the JP4 to the fire-fighter’s mini-van. To mark the launch of this book, an evening event was held in the Atelier Renault on 6 December last. Amongst the guests were Patrick Peleta, the Marreau brothers and Michel Duvernay. The evening was a foretaste of the events that are in preparation for the 50th birthday of the 4L. 6 December ► Launch evening for "Générations 4L"

Philippe Berthonnet, text, and Bernard Canonne, photos, have given us a book about the Renault 4 entitled "Générations 4L".

26 January/2 February ► Monte-Carlo Historic Rally

The 14th Monte-Carlo Historic Rally (MCH) takes place between 26 January and 2 February 2011 and is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its big brother, the Monte-Carlo Rally (1911 - 2011). Like the last event, over 300 exceptional cars will be at the starting line. They will have to complete a course of 2,500 kilometres in one just one week. A new feature this year is that the participants will have a choice of 5 start point cities. In fact, the historic rally's organising committee wanted to pay homage to its big brother by offering starts in 3 cities that historically were start points for competitors in the Monte-Carlo rallies of yesteryear. This explains why Glasgow (UK), Marrakesh (Morocco) and Warsaw (Poland) have been chosen, along with two

intermediate cities, Barcelona (Spain) and Reims (France), for the older or less powerful cars. On the occasion of the Renault 4's 50th birthday, Renault Classic has decided to field three Renault 4s, driven by: Jean Ragnotti, Emmanuel Guigou and Michel Leclère who will replace Michel Duvernay (winner of the Coupe de France Renault Cross Elf 1981), who unfortunately has had to withdraw. The car driven by Jean Ragnotti will be the star prize in the tombola organised for the 4L International. A rare chance indeed to own a vehicle raced by the famous Jeannot !

2/6 February ► The Rétromobile Show : main beam on for the 2011 show!

The 36th Rétromobile Classic Car Show takes place between 2 and 6 February 2011, at Porte de Versailles, Paris. The Renault 4's fiftieth anniversary is an occasion for Renault to return to the Rétromobile Show (having last participated in 2006). On its 700 m² stand, visitors will find: - a exhibition concept designed by Renault Classic showing 13 exceptional Renault 4 models, some of which have never been exhibited before - Two Miss Sixty models: Twingo Miss Sixty, presented at the last Paris Motor Show and its big sister, the Renault 4 Miss Sixty. - screens showing images of the Renault 4 - mini 4Ls created by Christophe Goujon

MY EXPERIENCE 17/19 September 2010 ► Meeting in the Arras area, an experience shared wi th the Frégate Club de France

From Saturday 17 to Monday 19 September 2010, ten Frégates and around twenty Frégate enthusiasts got together for a late summer week-end under the auspices of the Frégate Club de France. Base camp was set up in Thélus, a small town with a population of 1,200 in the Nord Pas de Calais region. On Saturday morning, the weather is superb and lends itself to a morning expedition that begins with a call at the Sainte-Anne farm, built between 1919 and 1924 and whose architecture is typical of Flemish farms. It is farmed by the owner of a type "H" pickup which is still giving good service. A short tour past the abbey at Mont Saint-Éloi then taking in nearby villages, including Acq, leads the Frégate enthusiasts to Salvy-Berlette for apéritifs and a farmhouse buffet. After the meal, a visit to the Nord-Pas-De-Calais mining heritage centre at Lewarde is laid on. This centre, which was begun in the 1970s by the Nord Pas de Calais Mines Authority, was created on the site of the Fosse Delloye pit in the heart of this mining region and opened to the public in 1984. It includes 7000m² of industrial buildings and superstructures on an 8 hectare site. Under a fine rain, Sunday begins with a visit to the "Cité Nature". Restored by the architect Jean Nouvel, it offers of a space of around 2500 m² where the visitor can learn about science and culture. There are more than 700 items in a collection about culinary arts, folk traditions and agricultural and food processing techniques that tell the history of 10,000 years of food and agriculture. The themed gardens offer a most varied stroll: hop garden, vineyard, vegetable garden, rose garden, bamboo stands, fruit garden, flower garden and so on. A hearty traditional meal includes potchevl'ech, a dish of Flemish origin that is easier to eat than it is to pronounce!, a meat stew that combines chicken, rabbit, pork and calf's foot. The afternoon is given over to a visit to Arras, the department's main city. This city is famed for it 2 squares bordered by 155 façades in the Flemish baroque style. Its town hall is a Unesco Heritage Site and its 75-metre high belfry offers magnificent views of Arras, Saint Vaast cathedral and the surrounding countryside. The following day offered the cance to pay homage to the Canadian soldiers who died for France in Vimy during the First World War. The two pylons that climb to 40 metres above the base of the building represent Canada and France. It is the most prestigious Canadian monument in Europe, which became Canadian soil by donation of the French nation. In the afternoon, everyone returns to their home turf; once more, friendliness was the key feature of this week-end, so marvellously organised by our members Michel and Danièle Cauwet, with the assistance of their daughter, Nathalie.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

45 years and counting!

The Renault 10 is the latest version of the "all-at -the-back" models that began with the 4 CV. For Renault, the 1965 Motor Show is important: the Renault 10 joins the new Renault16 to enhance the offer. Built on the same platform as the Renault 8, the Renault 10 is aimed at the customer who is more interested in comfort and provides a bigger boot. Plus a more refined finished. In 1966 an automatic version of the 3 gearbox appears, whilst the first styling changes are added at the end of 1967: rectangular headlights that are a perfect fit for the times and lower rear lights. Do these changes explain why the 10 is the Renault that female customers appreciate the most? Two years later, the engine is replaced by a more powerful 1300 cm3, the same as the Renault 12, launched simultaneously. The Renault range continues its conversion to "all-at-the-back" with front-wheel drive. The Renault 10 does not survive and disappears from the catalogue in 1971.

REMINDER

The Renault 4, the first "everyday" car, born from a stroke of genius: a versatile car able to go anywhere and lend its services to any occasion; the blue jeans of the car world. From the moment it goes on sale back in 1961 it becomes a true social phenomenon, going from strength to strength in its 50 year plus career by meeting the aspirations of the various generations. Perpetuating this legend on the net through a Facebook fan page was an absolute must. That’s now been done; since 21 April, the Renault 4 has had its very own official page. You have the chance to win a copy of the “Renault The Collection” book by signing up to the 4L community. 25 internet users will be drawn from those registered on the site and the quickest will win this publication.

WHO AM I? Answer: Renault 3 Launched in 1961, the Renault 3 was the simplified version of the Renault 4 range. At the end of the Fifties, the car undergoes profound changes and must meet increasingly varied requirements. At Renault, the 4CV is showing its age and the rear engine does not facilitate its use as a utility vehicle. No worries: the new Renault will offer exceptional configuration capacities. Presented in July 1961, the Renault 3 and 4 are complemented by the luxury version with six side windows, whose name, 4L, will be adopted by the public for the entire range. The first car from the company with front-wheel drive (following the Estafette utility vehicle), it has a flat floor pan and a hatchback. Its sealed cooling circuit and its no-lubrication couplings reduce maintenance to the strict minimum. This first "car for living" is the blueprint for future Renaults, and will win over the most diverse range of customers. Its ingenious design, so suited to the times, will ensure it an exceptional career that only comes to an end in 1993, the launch year of the… Twingo !
