    ENGINE IMMOBILISER

Operating principleThe car is automatically protecteda few seconds after the key isremoved from the ignition.

When the ignition is switched on,indicator light 1 illuminates for afew seconds and then goes out.

The car has recognised the code andthe engine can be started.

If the car does not recognise theignition key code, indicator light 1will flash continuously and theengine will not start.

This prevents the car being drivenby anyone not in possession of thecar's coded ignition key.

Light indicating that the engineimmobiliser is operational. When the ignition is switched on,indicator light 1 comes on forapproximately three seconds andthen goes out. You can then startthe engine.

Car protection indicator lightA few seconds after the ignitionhas been switched off, indicatorlight 1 will flash continuously.

The car will not be protected untilthe key is removed from theignition.

System malfunction warninglightIf warning light 1 continues toflash or remains illuminatedcontinuously after the ignition isswitched on, it indicates that thesystem is not operating correctly.

If warning light 2 flashes whenthe car is being driven and isdecelerating or at idling speed, itindicates that the system is notoperating correctly.

Use the second key (supplied withthe car). If you do not have access tothis, it is essential to call a RenaultDealer because only dealers in theRenault network are qualified torepair the engine immobiliser.

Any unauthorised workcarried out on the engineimmobiliser (computers, wiring, etc.) could be

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are:O Seat belt pretensioners.

    O Force limiter.

O Air bags for driver and frontpassenger.

These systems are provided to actindependently or together when thecar is subjected to a frontal impact.

    There are three possibilities,depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the beltonly;

    - the pretensioner is triggered torectify belt position and take upplay in the belt;

    - if the air bag and force limiter aretriggered, they provide additionalprotection in the event of the mostsevere impact.

O Side air bags are provided toactivate in the event of a severeside impact.

Front seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.

If the car is subject to a severefrontal impact, piston 1immediately retracts the seat beltbuckle pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency.

Have the entire restraintsystem checked followingan accident.

No work whatsoever may beperformed on the pretensionersystem (computer, wiring, etc.).

Only qualified Renault Networkpersonnel may work on thepretensioner system to preventincorrect triggering of the systemwhich may cause injury.

The electric trigger system mayonly be tested by a speciallytrained technician using specialequipment.

When scrapping your car, contact your Renault Dealer fordisposal of the gas generator.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)Force limiterAbove a certain severity of impact, this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

Warning concerning theservice life of the airbags

The pyrotechnic systems in airbags and pretensioners have alimited service life. Thesesystems must be replaced eachtime they are activated but at thelatest after they have been inservice for 10 years. This workmust always be undertaken by aRenault Dealer.

The seat belt pretensioners andthe air bag operate together. Ifone of the systems has passed thedate when it is due for renewal, itwill alter the overall safetyprotection provided.

Air bags for the driverand front passengerThese may be provided for thedriver and the front passenger.

The presence of this equipment isindicated by the words Air bag onthe steering wheel and thedashboard, and a label on the baseof the windscreen or on the sunvisor.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)

Air bags for the driverand front passenger (continued)Each air bag system consists of:- An air bag and gas generator fittedin the steering wheel for the driverand in the dashboard for the frontpassenger.

    - A computer for both systems, which includes the impactdetector and a monitor controllingthe electrical trigger system for thegas generator.

    - A single warning light 1 on theinstrument panel.

OperationThe system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on(ignition key in position M:Ignition on).

If a severe frontal impact occurs, theair bag(s) inflate(s) in approximately30 milliseconds, cushioning theimpact of the driver's head againstthe steering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The air bag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way as theyget out of the car.

The air bag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the air baginflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an air bag isrequired, it must inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin.

FaultsWarning light 1 illuminates on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds.

If it does not illuminate when theignition is turned on or if it flashes, there is a fault in the system.

Consult your Renault Dealer as soonas possible. Your protection will bereduced until this problem isrectified.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)All the warnings below are given so that, if the air bag is activated, it is not obstructed in any way and also to prevent therisk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the air bag inflates.

The air bag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the air bags and seat belts are integralparts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential that the seat belt is worn at all times. If seat belts arenot worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minorsuperficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries arealways possible with air bags.

The air bag does not offer protection against light or moderate frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if the car turnsover.

Air bags for driver and passenger No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on any part of the driver and passenger air bag system

(computer, wiring, etc.) except by qualified Renault network personnel.

To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified Renault Network personnel may work on the air bag system.

As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your car has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.

When selling or lending the car, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the car.

When scrapping your car, contact your Renault Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraintsystems for children and babies.

In Europe, children under 12 yearsof age or a height of less than1.50 m(1) (approx. 5 ft) must travelin an approved seat that is suitablefor the height and weight of thechild.

The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.

Remember that a collision at30 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling from a height of 10metres. Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which doesnot have any railings.

    (1) Always comply with the laws of thecountry in which you are travelling. They may be different to theguidelines in this handbook.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or children beallowed to travel sitting onthe knees of anotherpassenger in the car.

If a head-on collision occurs at 30mph (50 km/h), the resultingmomentum of a child weighing 30kg (66 lbs) will be the same as thatof a one tonne projectile: you willfind it impossible to hold the child, even if you yourself are wearing abelt.

It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your knee.Never use the belt for more thanone person at the same time.

Child restraints for which approvalwas obtained after January 1992offer a much higher level of safetythan those approved before thatdate.

It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.

Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.

The standard classifies childrestraints in five categories:

    Category 0: from 0 to 10 kg (0 to 22 lbs)Category 0+: from 0 to 13 kg (0 to 28 lbs)Category 1: from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lbs)Category 2: from15 to 25kg (33 to 55 lbs)Category 3: from22 to 36kg (48 to 80 lbs)

CHILD SAFETY (continued)The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.

To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsobtained from a Renault Dealer.

Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developedin consultation with themanufacturers and have been testedin Renault vehicles.

Consult your Renault Dealer andask him to help you install it.

Category 0 and 0+A child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. There is arisk that a child in a front-facingseat will sustain neck injuries in theevent of a frontal collision. Renaulttherefore recommends a rear-facingseat giving all-round protection andfitted with a safety harness (figure 1).

Category 1Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the car'sthree-point belts are not adequateand there is a risk that the child willsustain abdominal injuries in theevent of a frontal collision. Itis therefore advisable to userear-facing seats (figure 1), bucket-type seats (figure 2) or seats withharnesses.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

    CHILD SAFETY (continued)

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg)(33 to 55 lbs)The type of restraint most suitablefor the pelvis of a child agedbetween 4 and 7 is one that can becombined with a three-point seatbelt. This is a booster seat (figure 3)with belt guides to ensure that thebelt will be worn flat over the thighsof the child.

A booster seat with a height-adjustable seatback and a belt guideare recommended as this will allowthe belt to be worn as close to thebase of the neck as possible but noton it. A bucket-type seat (figure 4)must be used for cars where the rearcentre seat is equipped with atwo-point belt.

Category 3For children aged over seven, abooster seat with belt guides isrecommended to ensure that thecar's three-point seat belt will beworn flat over the child's thighs.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide are recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.

If a booster seat without a seatbackis used (figure 4), the car's headrestraint must be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of thehead restraint must be at the sameheight as the top of the child's headand should never be lower than thelevel of the child's eyes.

    CHILD SAFETY (continued)CHILD SAFETY

No modifications may be made to the originally fitted parts of the restraint system (belts and seats and theirmountings).

Follow carefully the fitting instructions provided by the manufacturer of the restraint system.

Always avoid dressing the child in bulky garments and do not place any objects between the child and the restraintsystem.

The seat belt in the car must be taut so that the child's seat is held in position securely. Check the tension regularly.

Never pass the belt under the arm or behind the back.

The harness or belt should be taut and fitted to suit the child's stature.

Never allow your child to stand up or kneel on the seats while the car is moving.

Check that the child is in the correct position for the entire journey, particularly when he or she is asleep.

Use the seat belts to hold the seat in position, even if it is not occupied. Otherwise, if an accident were to occur, it maybecome dislodged and pose a risk to other car occupants.

Have the seat belts and restraint systems in use at the time of a serious accident checked.

Never leave a child unsupervised in a car, even if he/she is in a restraint device.

Activate the rear door locks (if your car is equipped with these).

Make sure the child does not get out of the car at the side where there is traffic.

Set your children a good example - always wear your seat belt.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF PETROL VERSIONSThe following operating conditions: driving for a long time with the

    low fuel level warning lightilluminated

using leaded petrol using lubrication additives or fuel

    not approved by Renault

Or operating incidents such as: faulty ignition, running out of

fuel or spark plug disconnected, causing engine misfiring andjerking when driving

    loss of power

may cause the catalytic converter tooverheat and thus reduce itsefficiency or even destroy it andcause thermal damage to the car.

If you note any of the aboveincidents, have the necessaryrepairs carried out as soon aspossible by your Renault Dealer.

These faults may be avoided bytaking your car regularly to yourRenault Dealer at the intervalsspecified in your Servicing booklet.

Starting problemsTo avoid damaging the catalyticconverter, do not keep trying tostart the engine (using the starter, orby pushing or towing the car)without having identified andcorrected the starting fault.

If the fault cannot be identified, donot persist in attempting to start theengine and call a Renault Dealer.

Donot park the car or run theengine in locations wherecombustible substances ormaterials such as grass or

leaves could come into contact witha hot exhaust system.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION, FUEL ECONOMY, DRIVINGRENAULT is actively participatingin the reduction of pollutantexhaust gas emissions and in savingenergy.

By virtue of its design, moderatefuel consumption and initialsettings, your Renault conforms tocurrent anti-pollution standards.Technical design, however, cannotachieve all. The fuel consumptionof your car and the level of pollutantexhaust gas emissions are verymuch within your control. Makesure that your car is maintainedcorrectly, use it carefully and watchyour driving style.

MaintenanceIt is important to remember thatfailure to respect anti-pollutionstandards could lead to legal actionagainst the car owner. In addition, the replacement of parts of theengine, fuel supply system andexhaust by parts other than thoseoriginally recommended by themanufacturer could alter your car insuch a way that it no longercomplies with anti-pollutionstandards.

Have your car checked and adjustedby your Renault Dealer inaccordance with the instructions inthe cars servicing booklet.

Your Renault Dealer has all theequipment necessary for ensuringthat your car is maintained to itsoriginal standard.

Always remember that the emissionof pollutant fumes is directly linkedto fuel consumption.

Engine adjustments Ignition: this does not require

    adjustment.

Spark plugs: the specifications ofthe Renault TechnicalDepartment must be strictlyobserved in order to achieveoptimum conditions of use, performance and output.

If the spark plugs have to bechanged, use the make, type andgap specified for your car'sengine. Consult your RenaultDealer for this information.

Idling speed: this does not requireadjustment.

Air and fuel filters: a cloggedfilter element reduces output andshould be changed.

Injection pump setting: the pumpmust be set to the recommendedvalues.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL, DRIVING (continued)

Driving Drive carefully for the first few

miles until the engine reaches itsnormal operating temperature, rather than let it warm up whilethe car is stationary.

    Speed is expensive.

Sporty driving uses a lot of fuel:drive with a light right foot.

Study the road ahead so that youare able to brake as little aspossible, it can be sufficient justto lift off the accelerator.

    Avoid fierce acceleration.

Do not overrev the engine in theintermediate gears. Always usethe highest ratio possible withoutlabouring the engine.

Do not try to maintain the samespeed up a hill; accelerate nomore than youwould on the level.Keep your foot in the sameposition on the accelerator pedal.

Double declutching andaccelerating before switching offare superfluous actions inmodern cars.

Bad weather, flooded roadsDo not drive throughfloods if the depth ofwater is above the loweredge of the wheel rims.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL, DRIVING (continued)

General hints Electricity is a fuel, so switch off

    all electrical equipmentwhich is notrequired.

However, (with safety always inmind), keep your lights on whenvisibility is poor (see and be seen).

Try to use the air vents. Drivingwiththewindows openwill increase fuelconsumptionby4%when travellingat a speed of 60 mph (100 km/h).

Air conditioning increases fuelconsumption, especially in towndriving. Switch off the system whenit is not needed.

Never fill the fuel tank right to thebrim as this is wasteful.

Do not leave an empty roof rack inposition.

It is better to fit a trailer for bulkyobjects.

When towing a caravan, fit a winddeflector and adjust it carefully.

Avoid using the car for door-to-doorcalls (short journeys with long waitsin between) because the enginenever reaches its normal operatingtemperature. Try to groupyour calls.

    Tyres Inadequate pressures may increase

    fuel consumption.

The use of non-recommended tyresmay also increase fuel consumption.

ENVIRONMENTYour vehicle has been designedwith the aim of caring for theenvironment. The majority of versions are

equipped with a depollutionsystem including a catalyticconverter, a lambda sensor andan active carbon filter. (Theactive carbon filter preventsvapour from the petrol tank beingreleased into the open air.)

These vehicles run on unleadedfuel only.

87% of your vehicle consists ofparts that can be recycled andalready contain recycledmaterials.

95% of the plastic components inyour vehicle are marked with asymbol which allows theprincipal component material tobe identified. These markingsmean that parts removed can besorted more easily, thusoptimising the recycling of eachof them.

In addition, your car meetsthe requirements of Europeanlegislation relating to environmentalprotection.

Make your contribution towardsprotection of the environment too!

When disposing of parts replacedduring routine maintenance(battery, oil filter, air filter, etc.) andoil containers (whether empty orfull of used oil, etc.), do not includethem with household waste.

Dispose of them through specialistorganisations. In all cases, complywith local bye-laws.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) (depending on version or option)When braking sharply, the twomainaims are to reduce the stoppingdistance and to keep your car undercontrol. However, depending on thenature of the ground, weatherconditions and your reactions, thereis a danger that the wheels may lockand directional control may be lost. The anti-lock braking system (ABS)has been designed to combat thisdanger.

The brake control system preventsthe wheels from locking, even if thebrakes are applied too sharply, andallows the car to be steered and thusits direction to be controlled. Underthese circumstances it is quitepossible for the driver to steer thecar round an obstacle whilst brakingat the same time. Also, this systemallows you to optimise stoppingdistances, especially whenroadholding becomes difficult (wetor slippery roads, variable roadsurfaces).

Although this system allows you tooptimise stopping distances, theABS system does not allow you toincrease car performance, which isphysically linked to the localconditions of tyre/ground adhesion. The rules of good driving practicemust always be observed (such asdriving at a safe distance from thevehicle in front). The fact that thecars safety has been enhancedshould not encourage you to takerisks.

Whenever the system is in use, youwill feel a varying degree of pulsingthrough the brake pedal. Thesetangible signs will warn you that theadhesion between the tyres and theground has reached its limit andthat you must adapt your drivingstyle to suit the road conditions.

    FaultsTwo possible situations may occur:

1 - The warning light is

lit on the instrument panel.Braking is still available, butwithout the ABS system. Consult aRenault Dealer as soon as possible.

    2 - Warning lights and

are lit on the instrument panel. This indicates that both thebrakingsystem and the ABS system arefaulty. Your car brakes may stillpartially operate. However, it isdangerous to brake suddenly andyou must therefore stop as soon astraffic conditions allow. Contactyour Renault Dealer as a matter orurgency.

The braking control provided by the anti-lock braking system is independent of the effort applied to the brake pedal. In an emergency, apply strong and continuous pressure to the brake pedal - there is no need to pump it repeatedly.
