KEYS / RADIO FREQUENCY REMOTE CONTROLS

Radio frequency remote control unit AIt can be identified by the presence of button 1.1 Remote control door locking unit,

coded ignition key, key for doors and fuel filler cap.

Doors are locked and unlocked using remote control unit A.It is supplied with power by a battery which must be replaced when the battery warning light 2 no longer lights up. (Refer to the information on “Remote control locking: batteries”).

Driver’s responsibilityNever leave the vehicle unattended with the key in the ignition if there is a child

(or animal) in the vehicle. With the key in the ignition, he or she could start the engine or operate electrical equipment such as the electric windows and there is a risk that part of their body may become trapped (neck, arm, hand, etc.). Risk of serious injury.

Door locking/unlockingPress remote control for approximately one second (indicator light 2 comes on) to lock or unlock the doors.– The hazard warning lights flash

twice to indicate that the doors have been locked.Note: If a door or the tailgate is not properly shut or is still open, or if a rear light is in the continuously lit position (refer to the relevant information in Section 3), the hazard warning lights do not flash.

– The hazard warning lights flash once to indicate that the doors have been unlocked.

KEYS/RADIO FREQUENCY REMOTE CONTROLS: general informationRadio frequency remote control rangeThis varies according to the environment. It is therefore important when handling the remote control to ensure that you do not lock or unlock the vehicle by inadvertently pressing the buttons.Note: on certain vehicles, if a door is not opened within approximately 30 seconds of the door being unlocked by remote control, the doors will lock again automatically.

InterferenceThe presence of certain objects (metal objects, mobile telephones, or an area with strong electromagnetic radiation, etc.) close to the key may create interference and affect the operation of the system.

If you lose your keys or need another set of keys (or a remote control unit), contact your RENAULT Dealer.– If you need to replace a key it will

be necessary to take the vehicle and all its keys to your RENAULT Dealer in order to initialise the whole system.

– No more than four remote control units may be used for one vehicle.

If the remote control will not operate:Make sure that the correct battery type is being used, and that the battery is in good condition and in- serted correctly. These batteries should have a service life of approximately two years.In this case, refer to the information on the “Radio frequency remote control: batteries”, in Section 5.

OPENING THE DOORS

Opening manually from the outsideFront: use the key to unlock front door lock 2. Place your hand behind handle 1 and pull it towards you.Rear: if fitted to the vehicle, when the front door is open, lift unlocking knob 3 from inside and pull the door handle.

Lights-on warning buzzerIf you have left the lights on after switching off the ignition, a reminder buzzer will sound when a door is opened (to prevent discharge of the battery, etc.).

Childproof locksTo make it impossible for the rear doors to be opened from the inside, move lever 5 on each door and check from the inside that the doors are securely locked.

LOCKING THE DOORSDoors and tailgate status indicator lightThe indicator light on switch 2 informs you of the closure status of the doors and tailgate:– the indicator light is on when the

doors/tailgate are locked;– the indicator light goes out when a

door or the tailgate is open (or incorrectly closed).

When you lock the doors using the remote control, the indicator light remains lit for approximately one minute then goes out.

Manual lockingFront: use the key from the outside.Rear: if fitted to the vehicle, press down knob 1 on each door.

S Electric central locking

This enables the doors and the luggage compartment to be locked or unlocked simultaneously.To lock, press the switch on the side with the padlock symbol 2.The front door mechanism cannot be locked if the door is open. If you decide to keep the

doors locked when you are driving, remember that it may be more difficult for

those assisting you to gain access to the passenger compartment in the event of an emergency.

RENAULT ANTI-INTRUDER DEVICE (RAID)You must first decide if you want to activate this function.

To activateWith the ignition on, press central door locking button 1 for about five seconds, until a beep is heard.

To deactivateWith the ignition on, press central door locking button 1 for about five seconds, until a beep is heard.

If you decide to keep the doors locked when you are driving, remember that it may be more difficult for

those assisting you to gain access to the passenger compartment in the event of an emergency.

Operating principleWhen the vehicle moves off, the system locks the doors automatically as soon as you reach a speed of approximately 4 mph (6 km/h). The indicator light on button 1 will light up.The door is unlocked– by opening a front door.

Note: if a rear door is opened, it will automatically be locked again when the vehicle reaches a speed of approximately 4 mph (6 km/h);

– by pressing door unlocking button 1.

Operating faultsIf you find an operating fault (no automatic locking, the indicator light for button 1 does not light up when trying to lock the doors and tailgate, etc.), firstly check that the doors and tailgate are properly closed. If they are properly closed, contact your RENAULT Dealer.Also make sure that locking has not been deactivated inadvertently. If this occurs, switch the ignition off and on again and reactivate it as described above.

Système antidémarrage

ENGINE IMMOBILISERThis prevents the vehicle being driven by anyone not in possession of the vehicle’s coded ignition key.

Any repair or modification to the engine immobiliser (computer, wiring, etc.) may be dangerous. It must be

carried out by a qualified RENAULT technician.

Operating principleThe vehicle is automatically protected for a few seconds after the key is removed from the ignition.When the ignition is switched on, indicator light 1 comes on for a few seconds and then goes off.The vehicle has recognised the code and the engine can be started.If the vehicle does not recognise the ignition key code, tell-tale light 1 will flash continuously and the engine cannot be started.

Indicator lightSystem operating tell-tale lightWhen the ignition is switched on, tell- tale 1 lights up continuously for approximately three seconds and then goes out. You can then start the engine.

Vehicle protection tell-tale lightA few seconds after the ignition has been switched off, tell-tale light 1 will flash constantly.The vehicle will not be protected until the key has been taken out of the ignition.

Operating fault warning lightAfter the ignition has been switched on, if warning light 1 continues to flash or remains continuously lit, this indicates a system operating fault.

In all cases, it is essential to consult a RENAULT Dealer as only he is qualified to repair the engine immobiliser.If the coded ignition key is faulty, use the second key (supplied with the vehicle).1

FRONT HEADRESTS

The headrest is important for safety. Ensure that it is in place and in the correct position. The distance be-

tween your head and the headrest should be as small as possible. The top of your head should be in line with the top of the headrest.

Headrest with tab 1To raise the headrestSlide it upwards to the required height.

To lower the headrestMove tab 1 forwards and lower the headrest down to the required height.

To adjust the angle of the headrestDepending on the vehicle, tilt section A towards or away from you to the required position.

To remove the headrestPress button 2 and lift the headrest to release it.

To refit the headrestInsert the headrest rods into the holes, with the notches facing forwards.Move tab 1 forwards and lower the headrest down to the required height.

Headrest with tab 3To raise or lower the headrestPull the headrest towards you (i.e. towards the front of the vehicle) and slide it up or down at the same time.

To adjust the angle of the headrestOn some vehicles the angle of the headrest can be adjusted. To do this, move the front section A of the headrest forwards or backwards until it feels comfortable.

FRONT SEATS

We would advise you not to recline the seatbacks too far to ensure that the effec- tiveness of the seat belts is

not reduced.Make sure that the seatbacks are locked in place correctly.Nothing should be placed on the floor (area in front of driver) as such objects may slide under the pedal during braking manoeuvres, thus obstructing its use.

To move forwards or backwardsLift lever 2 to unlock the seat. When the seat is in the required position, release the lever and ensure that the seat is locked in place.

To raise or lower the driver’s seatMove lever 1.

To tilt the seatbackMove handle 4 and tilt the seatback to the desired position.

To adjust the lumbar support on the driver’s seatTurn control knob 3.

For safety reasons, make these adjustments only when the vehicle is stationary.

Access to the rear seats(three-door versions)Lift lever 5 and slide the seat forwards.To return the seat to its original (stored) position on the driver’s side, slide the seat backwards until it locks.

SEAT BELTSAlways wear your seat belt when travelling in your vehicle. You must also comply with the legislation of the particular country you are in.

Before starting:– first ensure that your driving posi-

tion is correctly adjusted,– then adjust your seat belt to pro-

vide maximum protection.

Incorrectly adjusted seat belts may cause injuries in the event of an accident.Even pregnant women

should wear a seat belt. In this case, ensure that the lap belt is not exert- ing too much pressure on the abdo- men without allowing any slack.

Adjusting your driving position– Sit well back in your seat (having

first removed your coat or jacket).This is essential to ensure your back is positioned correctly.

– Adjust the distance between the seat and the pedals.Your seat should be as far back as possible while still allowing you to depress the clutch pedal fully. The seatback should be adjusted so that your arms are slightly bent when you hold the steering wheel.

– Adjust the position of your headrest.For safety reasons, the top of the headrest must be level with the top of the head.

– Adjust the height of the seat.This adjustment allows you to select the seat position which offers you the best possible view.

– Adjust the position of the steering wheel.

Adjusting the seat beltsSit with your back firmly against the seatback.Shoulder strap 1 should be as close as possible to the base of the neck but not on it.Lap belt 2 should be worn flat over the thighs and against the pelvis.The belt should be worn so that it is as close as possible to your body, i.e.: avoid wearing heavy clothing or allowing bulky objects under the belts.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are:– Front seat belt pretensioners.– Force limiter.– Air bags for driver and front pas-

senger.These systems are designed to act independently or together when the vehicle is subjected to a frontal impact.There are three possibilities, depending on the level of impact force:– protection is provided by the seat

belt only;– the pretensioner is triggered to

rectify belt position and take up seat belt slack;

– the air bag and the force limiter are also triggered when there are severe impacts.

– Side air bags are provided to deploy in the event of severe side impacts.

Front seat belt pretensionersWith the ignition switched on, if the vehicle is subject to a significant frontal impact the system may, depending on the severity of the impact, trigger pis- ton 1 which instantly retracts the belt.The pretensioners hold the seat belt against the body, holding the occupant more securely against the seat, thus increasing the seat belt’s efficiency.

– Have the entire restraint system checked following an accident.

– No operation whatsoever is permitted on any part of the system (pretensioners, air bags, computers, wiring) and the system components must not be reused on any other vehicle, even if identical.

– To avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may cause injury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the pretensioner and air bag system.

– The ignition module electrical specifications may only be tested by a specially trained technician using special equipment.

– When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the pretensioner and air bag gas generators.

Force limiterAbove a certain level of impact force, this mechanism is used to limit the force of the belt against the body so that it is at an acceptable level.

Air bags for driver and front passengerAn “Air bag” marking on the steering wheel and dashboard and a label on the lower section of the windscreen inform you of the presence of additional means of restraint (air bags, pretensioners, etc.) in the passenger compartment.The air bag system consists of:– for the driver: an adaptable air bag

and its two gas generators (for the small or large volume bag depending on the severity of the frontal impact) mounted on the steering wheel;

– for the passenger: an air bag and its gas generator mounted in the dashboard.Note: this passenger air bag is adaptable for right-hand drive versions.

– a computer for both systems, which includes the impact detector and a monitor controlling the electrical trigger system for the gas generators;

– a single å tell-tale light on the instrument panel.

The air bag system uses pyrotech- nic principles. This explains why, when the air bag inflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not mean that a fire is about to start) and make a noise upon detonation. In a situation where an air bag is required, it will inflate immediately and this may cause some minor, superficial grazing to the skin or other problems.

OperationThe system is not operational until a few seconds after the ignition has been switched on.If a severe frontal impact occurs, the air bag(s) inflate(s) rapidly, cushioning the impact of the driver’s head and chest against the steering wheel and the front passenger’s head against the dashboard. The air bag(s) then deflate(s) immediately so that the passengers are not impeded in any way as they exit the vehicle.

Operating faultsWarning light 1 will light up on the instrument panel when the ignition is switched on and then go out after a few seconds.If it does not light up when the ignition is turned on, there is a fault in the system.If it lights up while you are driving, stop at once and switch off the ignition.

If it remains lit after the ignition has been switched on again, there is a fault in the system.It is not recommended to let a passenger use this seat.Contact your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

The air bag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the air bags and seat belts are integral parts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn, the occupants of the vehicle are at risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minor superficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries are always possible with air

bags.If the vehicle should overturn or suffer a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and air bags are not always triggered. Impacts to the underside of the vehicle from pavements, holes, stones etc. can all trigger these systems.

Air bags for driver and front passenger– No work or modification whatsoever may be carried out on any part of the driver or passenger air bag system (air bag, pre-

tensioner, computer, wiring harness, etc.), except by qualified RENAULT Network personnel;– To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may cause injury,

only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the air bag system;– As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, or is stolen or

broken into;– When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this driver’s handbook with the vehicle;– When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulations governing the use of restraints for children and babies.In Europe children under 10 years of age(1) must be seated in an approved safety device which is suitable for the weight and size of the child.The driver is responsible for ensuring that this equipment is used correctly.Child restraints for which type approval was obtained after January 1992 offer a level of safety much greater than restraints with type approval before that date.It is therefore advisable to select a child restraint that complies with European regulation ECE 44.Restraints that comply with this legislation must be marked with an orange label bearing the letter E followed by a number (which represents the country where it is type approved) and the year in which the type approval was granted.Refer to the “Child safety equipment booklet” available from the RENAULT Network to choose the seat suited to your child and recommended for your vehicle.

There are some passenger seats in which the fitting of child seats is forbid- den.To find the authorised seats and types of child seats that can be fitted in each of the authorised seats, refer to the table in the following pages.

Under no circumstances should babies or children be allowed to travel sitting on the lap of another pas-

senger in the vehicle.If a frontal impact occurs at 30 mph (50 km/h) a child weighing 30 kg will be transformed into a missile equivalent to one ton: you will find it impossible to hold the child, even if you are wearing a belt yourself. It is particularly dangerous to put the belt round a child who is sitting on your lap. Never use the belt for more than one person at the same time.

(1) Always comply with the laws of the country in which you are travelling. They may be different to the guidelines in this handbook.

Remember that a collision at 30 mph (50 km/h) is the same as falling a distance of 10 metres. Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without a restraint is the equivalent of allowing him or her to play on a fourth-floor balcony without railings.

The right choiceThe safety of your children is also your responsibility.Your vehicle is fitted with the Isofix system, approved according to the new regulations ECE 14 and ECE 16.To ensure that your child has the maximum possible protection, we recommend that you use Isofix seats approved by the RENAULT Network.Refer to the information on the “ISOFIX child seat mounting system” in Section 1.Restraint systems for all categories are available. These systems have been developed in consultation with the manufacturers and have been tested in RENAULT vehicles.Contact your RENAULT Dealer and ask them to help you install it.

Categories 0 and 0+ (from 0 to 13 kg)A child’s neck is very susceptible to injury up to the age of two.It is preferable to put your child into a rear-facing enclosing shell seat. This position enhances safety.

Category 1 (from 9 kg to 18 kg)Between the ages of 2 and 4, a child’s pelvis is not fully developed. Restraints using the vehicle’s seat belts are not adequate and there is also a risk that the child will sustain abdominal injuries in the event of a frontal impact. Use a seat which restrains the child by means of a harness.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you use RENAULT approved accessories because they are designed for your vehicle and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide a warranty.

Category 2 (15 kg to 25 kg) and category 3 (22 kg to 36 kg)For correctly supporting the pelvis of a child under 10 years, a height under 1.36 m and a weight of less than 36 kg, it is preferable to use a booster seat with belt guides that ensure that the three-point belt lies flat over the child’s thighs.

A booster seat with a height-adjustable seatback and a belt guide are recommended as this will allow the belt to be worn as close to the base of the neck as possible but not on it.Place the back of the child seat firmly against the vehicle seatback. Adjust the height of the headrest or remove it if necessary.If a booster seat without a seatback is used, the vehicle’s headrest will have to be adjusted to suit the child’s height; the upper edge of the headrest must be at the same height as the top of the child’s head and should never be lower than the child’s eye level.

The standard classifies the child restraints in 5 categories:Category 0 : 0 to 10 kgCategory 0+: 0 to 13 kgCategory 1 : 9 to 18 kgCategory 2 : 15 kg to 25 kgCategory 3 : 22 kg to 36 kg

We recommend that you remove the headrest and put it in the luggage compartment, to facilitate fitting certain types of child seat to the rear seats.

Isofix child seat mounting systemThis is a system for fitting the child seat to the vehicle.The Isofix system has been approved in accordance with regulations ECE 14 and ECE 16 and allows all child seats approved as “Semi-universal” or “Universal” in accordance with regulation ECE 44 to be fitted.The child seats are fitted with two latches which are attached to the two rings.The Universal Isofix seats are also provided with a belt to secure the back of the child seat.To find out which seats are fitted with this system, refer to the table of “Seats suitable for fitting a child seat” at the beginning of the information on “Child safety”.

Your vehicle’s Isofix system comprises:– two anchoring rings for securing the

base of the child seat;– a ring for securing the backs of for-

ward facing seats.Your vehicle is also provided with an additional ring specific to RENAULT for securing the belt of those rear-facing seats available from the RENAULT network. This belt improves the support your child receives in the event of a rear impact.

FittingForward-facing child seatWhen a forward-facing child seat is installed, the front seat must not be moved back beyond the halfway point on the seat runners and the seatback must be in an upright position.

Rear-facing child seat or shell seatWhen installing a rear facing child seat, push the front passenger seat back as far as possible.

– Make sure that there is nothing obstructing the seat mounting mechanism at the anchorage points (gravel,

rags, toys, etc.).– Always remember to fasten the

seat belts on child seats for all journeys.

It remains lit when the engine is started, then when the seat belt is not fastened and the vehicle reaches a speed of approximately 6 mph (10 km/h), it flashes and a bleep sounds for approximately 90 seconds.

ê Engine immobiliser system warning light

Refer to the information on the “Engine immobiliser” in Section 1.

ú Warning light

This lights up when the engine is started and goes out after a few seconds.It can light up with other indicator lights or messages on the instrument panel.If it comes on when the vehicle is being driven, it is advisable to visit your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

û STOP light

This goes out as soon as the engine starts.It comes on with other warning lights and/or messages, and is accompanied by a beep. It indicates that it is essential to stop as soon as traffic conditions allow.

Ä Warning light for monitoring exhaust gas

On equipped vehicles, the light comes on when the ignition is switched on then goes out.– If it lights up continuously, consult

your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

6 Preheating warning light/ Electronic fault or water in the diesel filter warning light

– Preheating warning lightWith the ignition switched on, this light should come on; it indicates that the heater plugs are switched on. It goes out when preheating is complete and the engine can be started.

– Electronic fault or water in the diesel filter warning lightIf it remains lit or comes on while driving, it indicates an electrical or electronic fault, or the presence of water in the diesel filter.Contact your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

TRIP COMPUTER AND WARNING SYSTEM

General reset and trip mileage recorder reset key 2To reset the trip mileage recorder, the display must show the Trip mileage recorder.

Display selection key 3Press button 3 repeatedly to scroll through the following information:a) total mileage recorder,b) trip mileage recorder,c) fuel used,d) average fuel consumption,e) current fuel consumption,f) estimated range,g) distance travelled,h) average speed,i) programmed speed (speed limiter/

cruise control).Refer to the table on the following page for display examples.

Interpreting certain values displayed after a reset:The values showing average fuel consumption, range and average speed will become more stable and reliable the further you have travelled since the last time the reset button was pressed.

For the first few miles after pressing the reset key you will notice:– that the range increases as you

travel. This is normal, as average fuel consumption may decrease when:– the vehicle stops accelerating,– the engine reaches its operating

temperature (engine cold when reset button pressed),

– driving from a built-up area onto the open road.

Therefore, if the average fuel consumption decreases, the range will increase.

– You may also notice that the average fuel consumption increases when the vehicle is stationary and the engine idling.This is normal, since the computer takes account of fuel used during idling.

Note: when the maximum capacity of any of the memories is exceeded, the system automatically resets.

Adjusting the steering wheelOn certain vehicles, the position of the steering wheel is adjustable.Raise lever 2 and place the steering wheel in the required position; lower the lever to lock the steering wheel in place.Make sure that the steering wheel is correctly locked.

For safety reasons, only adjust the steering wheel when the vehicle is stationary.

á Main beam headlights

When the dipped beam headlights are lit, move stalk 1 towards you (an indicator light on the instrument panel lights up).To return to the dipped beam headlight position, pull the stalk towards you.

e Switching off the lights

Return stalk 1 to its original position.

u Side lights

Turn the end of stalk 1 until the symbol is opposite mark 3.The instrument panel will light up. The brightness may be adjusted by turning control knob 2, if the vehicle is equipped with this facility.

k Dipped beam headlights

Turn the end of stalk 1 until the symbol is opposite mark 3.An indicator light lights up on the instrument panel in all cases.

Before driving at night, check that the electrical equipment is in good condition and adjust the headlight beams (if your vehicle is not carrying its normal load). Check that the lights are not obscured (by dirt, mud, snow or objects which could cover them).

Direction indicatorsMove stalk 1 parallel to the steering wheel and in the direction you are going to turn it.When driving on the motorway, the steering wheel is not often turned enough to return the stalk automatically to 0. There is an intermediate position in which the stalk may be held when changing lanes.When the stalk is released, it automatically returns to 0.

WINDSCREEN WASH/WIPE

With the ignition on, move stalk 1– A park.– B intermittent wiping.

The wipers may stop for a few seconds between wipes depending on the version. You can vary the time between sweeps by turning the centre ring on stalk 1.

– C normal wiping speed.– D fast wiping speed.

Automatic selection of wiping speedWhen driving, with a wiping speed selected, the wiping speed changes to a lower speed if the vehicle stops:– from fast wiping speed, the speed

will change to normal wiping speed;– from normal wiping speed, the speed

will change to intermittent wiping.As soon as the vehicle moves off, wiping will return to the speed originally selected.When the vehicle is stationary, moving stalk 1 overrides and cancels automatic operation.

Noteif for any reason the wipers cannot move (e.g. stuck to windscreen by ice), the system will automatically cut off the power supply to the wipers.

WINDSCREEN WASH/WIPE (continued)– Headlights on

Press for longer than one second to activate the windscreen washer and headlight washer simultaneously.

Windscreen washer, headlight washersWith the ignition on, pull stalk 1 towards you.A brief press triggers one sweep cycle of the wiper, while a longer press triggers three cycles.– Headlights off

You activate the windscreen washer and wiper.This will make another sweep after a few seconds.

In frosty weather, make sure that the wiper blades are not stuck by ice (risk of motor overheating).Keep an eye on the condition of the blades. Replace the wiper blades as soon as they begin to lose efficiency (approximately once a year).If you switch off the ignition before switching off the windscreen wiper (position A) the blades will stop at random on the windscreen.

Before washing the vehicle, move the stalk to position A (park) to avoid the risk of damage to the blades when

wiping is activated.

Fuel filler cap: this is specific to the vehicle type. If you have to replace it, make sure the new cap is of the

same type. Contact your RENAULT Dealer.Never place the cap near a source of heat or flame.

Fuel gradeUse a high grade fuel with the appropriate octane rating as defined by the particular standards in force in your country.

Petrol versionsIt is essential to use unleaded petrol. The octane rating (RON) must con- form with the specifications given on the label inside fuel filler flap A. Refer to the information on “Engine specifications” in Section 6.

Diesel versionIt is essential to use diesel fuel that conforms to the specifications given on the label inside fuel filler flap A.Make sure that no water accidentally enters the fuel tank during filling. The fuel filler cap and neck must be clean and dust-free.

Do not mix even small amounts of petrol with diesel.

Capacity of the fuel tank: 50 litres approximately.There is a cap holder 1 on the fuel filler flap for holding the cap when the tank is being filled.

and ask your passengers to leave the vehicle and to keep away from the traffic;

– refrain from working on or restart- ing the vehicle before it has been inspected by qualified staff from the RENAULT Network.

No modifications whatsoever are permitted on any part of the fuel supply system (computers, wiring,

fuel circuit, injector, protection covers, etc.) as this may be dangerous (such work must be undertaken by qualified RENAULT Network personnel).

MaintenanceIt should be noted that failure to respect antipollution regulations may lead to legal action being taken against the vehicle owner. In addition, replacing engine, fuel supply system and exhaust components with parts other than those originally recommended by the manufacturer may alter your vehicle so that it no longer complies with antipollution standards.Have your vehicle checked and adjusted by your RENAULT Dealer in accordance with the instructions in the vehicle’s Maintenance Service booklet.Your approved Dealer has all the equipment necessary for ensuring that your vehicle is maintained to its original standard.

RENAULT is actively striving to reduce pollutant exhaust gas emissions and to save energy. By virtue of its design, moderate fuel consumption and initial settings, your RENAULT conforms to current antipollution standards. Technical design, however, cannot achieve all. – Brake as little as possible by suitably anticipating an obstacle or bend and then simply releasing the accelerator pedal.

– Avoid sudden acceleration.– Do not overrev the engine in the in-

termediate gears.Always use the highest gear possible without labouring the engine.On versions with automatic trans- missions, it is preferable to keep the gear lever in position D.

– Do not try to maintain the same speed up a hill, accelerate no more than you would on level roads. Keep your foot in the same position on the accelerator pedal.

– Double declutching and accelerating before switching off the engine are unnecessary in modern vehicles.

– Bad weather, flooded roads.Do not drive through floods if the depth of water is above the lower edge of the wheel rims.

Driving– Drive carefully for the first few miles

until the engine reaches its normal operating temperature, rather than let it warm up while the vehicle is stationary.

– Speed is expensive.– Sporty driving uses a lot of fuel: drive

with a light right foot.

Exhaust gas monitoring systemThe exhaust gas monitoring system will detect any operating faults in the vehicle’s antipollution system.If this system malfunctions, toxic sub- stances may be released into the atmosphere or damage may occur.

Ä This warning light on the instrument panel will indicate if there are any faults in the

system:This comes on when the ignition is switched on and goes out after three seconds.– if it comes on continuously, consult

your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible;

– if it flashes, reduce the engine speed until the light stops flashing. Consult your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

– Avoid using the vehicle for door- to-door calls (short journeys with long waits in between) because the engine never reaches its normal operating temperature.

Tyres– An underinflated tyre increases fuel

consumption.– The use of non-recommended tyres

can increase fuel consumption.

– In vehicles with air conditioning, it is normal to observe an increase in fuel consumption (especially in urban conditions) when it is used. For vehicles fitted with manual air conditioning, switch off the system when it is not required.Advice for reducing consumption and therefore helping to preserve the environment:Drive with the air vents open and the windows closed.If the vehicle has been parked in the sun, open the doors for a few moments to let the hot air escape before starting the engine.

– Never fill the fuel tank to the brim to avoid overflow.

– Do not leave an empty roof rack fitted to the vehicle.

– It is better to fit a trailer for bulky objects.

Advice on use– Electricity is fuel; switch off all the

electrical components which are not really needed. However (safety first), keep your lights on when the visibility is bad (“see and be seen”).

– Use the air vents. Driving with the windows open at 60 mph (100 km/h) will increase fuel consumption by 4%.

– When towing a caravan, fit a wind deflector and adjust it carefully.

ENVIRONMENTYour vehicle has been designed with respect for the environment in mind.– Most versions are equipped with a

particle filter system including a catalytic converter, an oxygen sensor and an active carbon filter (the latter prevents vapour from the fuel tank being released into the open air).

– These vehicles operate with unleaded fuel only.

– 87% of the parts in your vehicle can be recycled and it already contains recycled materials.

– 95% of the plastic components in your vehicle are marked with a symbol which allows the principal component material to be identified. These markings mean that parts removed can be sorted more easily, making it easier to recycle them.

In addition to this, your vehicle meets the requirements laid down in European legislation relating to environmental protection.Make your contribution towards pro- tecting the environment too.Do not dispose of parts replaced in the course of routine vehicle maintenance (battery, oil filter, air filter, etc.) and oil containers (empty or full of used oil) with household waste.Dispose of them through specialist or- ganisations. In all cases, comply with local legislation.

Under heavy braking, the essential requirements are to limit the stopping distance and keep your vehicle under control. However, there is a risk that roadholding and directional control may be lost and the wheels may lock under braking, depending on the nature of the ground, weather conditions and your reactions. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has been designed to combat this danger.The safety enhancement is that the brake control system prevents the wheels from locking, even if the brakes are applied too sharply, and allows the vehicle to be steered and thus its direction to be controlled. Under these circumstances it is quite possible for the driver to steer the vehicle and to avoid an obstacle whilst at the same time applying the brake. This system also allows you to optimise stopping distances, especially when roadholding becomes difficult (wet or slippery roads, varying road surfaces).

Although this system allows you to benefit from optimum stopping distances, even with the ABS you must still take account of the actual condition of the road surface.It is still essential to follow the rules of good driving practice (such as driving at a safe distance from the vehicle in front). The fact that the vehicle’s safety has been increased should not encourage you to take risks.You will feel pulsing through the brake pedal each time the system is activated. These tangible signs will warn you that the adhesion between the tyres and the ground has reached its limit and enable you to adapt your driving style to suit the road conditions.

Operating faultsTwo possible situations may occur:

1 - Warning light x is lit on the instrument panel.Braking is still performed, but without the ABS system. Contact a RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

The braking modulation provided by the ABS is independent of the effort applied to the brake pedal. In an emergency, apply firm and continuous pressure to the brake pedal There is no need to pump it repeatedly.

2 - Warning lights x

and D are lit on the instrument panel.This indicates that both the braking system and the ABS system are faulty. Your braking systems are only partially operational. However, it is dangerous to brake suddenly and it is essential to stop immediately, as soon as traffic conditions allow. Contact a RENAULT Dealer.

CRUISE CONTROL - SPEED LIMITER: cruise control function

The cruise control function helps you to maintain your driving speed at a speed that you choose, called the cruising speed.This cruising speed can be adjusted continuously from 18 mph (30 km/h).

The cruise control function is in no way linked to the braking system.

This function is an additional driving aid. However, the function does not take the place of the driver.

Therefore, it can under no circumstances replace the driver’s responsibility to respect speed limits and to be vigilant (the driver must always be ready to brake).The cruise control must not be used in heavy traffic, on winding or slippery roads (black ice, aquaplaning, gravel) and during times of inclem- ent weather (fog, rain, side wind etc.). There is a risk of accidents.

Recalling the cruising speedIf a speed has been memorised, it is possible to recall it by pressing button 3 on condition that you are driving approximately 18 mph (30 km/h) and that you are sure that the driving conditions are suitable (traffic, road surface condition, weather conditions, etc.).If the vehicle has the temporary display function, the limited speed is displayed for approximately 30 seconds.

Pressing button 2 or 5 reactivates the cruise control function without taking into account the memorised speed: it is the speed at which the vehicle is moving that is taken into account.

Switching off the functionPress the main “On/Off” switch 1. If you do this, the speed is not memorised.The instrument panel indicator light goes out, confirming that the function is stopped.

Putting the cruise control on standby or switching it off does not cause a rapid reduction in speed: you

must brake by depressing the brake pedal.

Moving off forwardsSelect position D. In the majority of traffic conditions, you will not have to touch the gear selector lever again: the gear will be changed automatically at the right time and at the most suitable engine speed because the automatic system takes into account the vehicle load and road contour and adjusts itself to the particular driving style you have chosen.

Accelerating and overtakingDepress the accelerator pedal fully and firmly (or even take your foot off the accelerator and depress it again firmly as far as it will go).The speed with which you depress the pedal will allow you to downshift according to the vehicle’s capabilities.

Special circumstances– Snow position: if you are driving on

ground where you are likely to skid (snow, mud, etc.), press switch C, and operating tell-tale F will come on.Once these driving conditions no longer apply, exit this position by pressing switch C again; the operating tell-tale goes out.

– In hilly or mountainous areas: if you cannot remain in 4th gear because of the road surface and the number of bends, we would advise you to select D3 (by pressing button B, with the gear lever in position D), or 2 (2nd gear held), which will prevent shifting to gears higher than the one selected. Likewise, position 1, which holds 1st gear, retains a high level of engine braking.If you are travelling downhill for a long way, we would advise you to place the lever in D3 or 2 (or even 1) to obtain the most efficient engine braking and to relieve the brakes.

– In cold weather, to avoid stalling the engine, wait a few seconds before moving the lever from position P or N and selecting D or R.

Economical drivingLeave the selector in position D on the open road, depress the accelerator pedal slightly to ensure that automatic gear changes are made at low engine speeds.Do not use positions D3, 2, 1 or the snow position for normal driving conditions.

Parking the vehicleWhen the vehicle is stopped, move the lever to position P while keeping your foot on the brake pedal: the gearbox is in neutral and the drive wheels are me- chanically locked by the driveshaft.Apply the handbrake.

Operating faults– If the lever is jammed in the P po-

sition even though you are depressing the brake pedal, the lever can be released manually.To do this, unclip cover J and simultaneously press lug (located underneath cover J) and unlocking button A to move the lever out of position P.Contact your RENAULT Dealer.

– H: if this warning light I comes on while driving, it indicates a fault. Contact a RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

– H and Ò: if these warning lights come on simultaneously while driving, avoid leaving the lever in position D (or R) when stopping the vehicle: always return to N while the vehicle is stationary. Contact a RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

– If a vehicle with an automatic gearbox breaks down, refer to the information on “Towing” in Section 5.

Selector lever– allows you to shift directly from first

gear to reverse gear, to select reverse gear and neutral and to change gear in manual mode (see shift pattern);

– allows you to switch between manual and automatic modes at any time, with the engine switched on and reverse gear engaged, by moving the lever to the left.

Note: the selector lever automatically returns to the centre position after use.

Operation in automatic modeAutomatic mode is selected by default every time the ignition is switched on.The letter A appears on the display.The vehicle is controlled using the accelerator and the brake. Gears will change automatically at the correct moment to a speed suitable for the engine because the automatic function takes into consideration the weight of the car, the road surface and the chosen driving style.Automatic mode can be deactivated and reactivated at any time with the engine running by pushing the lever to the left.

Note:Automatic mode takes account of:– the position and speed of depression

of the accelerator pedal to assess driving style and select the optimum gear,

– action on the brake pedal, to com- mence engine braking in preparation for a downshift.

You can stop the vehicle at red lights, with the gear engaged, by pressing the brake pedal; there is no need to change to neutral.The vehicle will move off again:– either slowly, if you release the brake

without accelerating (e.g. when in a traffic jam),

– or quickly, if you release the brake and accelerate.

The oil level in the automatic gearbox system reservoir is variable depending on use. Adding oil is strictly forbid-

den (except by qualified RENAULT Network personnel).

Operation in semiautomatic mode (manual)When in automatic mode, moving the selector lever (up or down through the gears) or moving the lever to the left will switch the system to semi-automatic mode. In the latter case, the system will switch without a gear change.You can initiate gear changes using the selector lever.To move up through the gears simply push the selector lever forwards without necessarily releasing the accelerator. To move down through the gears simply push the selector lever backwards without necessarily releasing the accelerator.

The system does not accept downshifts which would generate a high engine speed or upshifts which would cause low engine speed.By pushing the lever forwards twice you can move up two gears at a time (unless this causes low engine speeds). By pushing the lever backwards twice you can move down two gears at a time (unless this causes high engine speeds).When decelerating with the foot off the pedal, the gears will automatically drop to the low engine speed limit to avoid stalling. First gear automatically shifts below a certain speed limit. It is possible to keep the vehicle stationary (stop, red light, etc.) by depressing the brake pedal and not shifting to neutral N.

The vehicle will move off again:– either slowly, if you release the brake

without accelerating (e.g. when in a traffic jam)

– or quickly, if you release the brake and accelerate.

Note: neutral may only be selected when the vehicle is being driven or is stationary when the brake pedal is depressed (if you forget, warning light 4 will light up).Push the gear selector lever to the right to engage neutral.Semi-automatic mode can be deactivated and reactivated at any time when the engine is running by pushing the lever to the left.

Accelerating and overtakingYou have two options:– slowly depress the accelerator pedal

in order to accelerate gradually,– to obtain maximum vehicle perform-

ance irrespective of the mode selected (automatic or manual), quickly depress the accelerator pedal fully beyond the kickdown point.The speed with which you depress the pedal will allow you to downshift according to the vehicle’s capabilities.

ParkingIt is possible to park in gear (for example, on a slope). To do this:– with the ignition on, select a gear

with your foot on the brake.– check that a gear other than N is dis-

played on the instrument panel, then remove the ignition key.

To disengage the gear, repeat this operation by switching on the ignition without starting the engine and shift the selector lever to neutral with your foot on the brake.Check that N is displayed on the instrument panel.

Driving on slippery surfaces (mud, snow etc.)When the vehicle is being driven on slippery surfaces (mud, snow, etc.), you may start off in second gear.To do this, move the gear selector lever twice with your foot on the brake pedal.The figure 2 appears on the dashboard display. The system then switches to semi-automatic mode (refer to the section entitled “Semi-automatic”).To return to automatic mode, press the mode change button.

Audible warning– If you hold the vehicle on a slope

for too long without applying the brakes or handbrake, you will strain the system (risk of overheating the clutch).In this case, an intermittent beeping sound will remind you that you should put your foot on the brake pedal or apply the handbrake.

– Never leave the vehicle with the engine running and a gear engaged, even if the handbrake is applied.For safety reasons you will hear an intermittent beeping sound when you open the door if you have not shifted into neutral or you have not switched off the ignition or depressed the brake pedal.

– Your vehicle will not start: you can push the vehicle to start the engine, provided the battery is not flat (display lit).Proceed as follows:– switch on the ignition;– select neutral;– push or tow the car or run it down

a slope until you reach the speed at which the warning buzzer is activated. This will indicate that moving the selector lever forwards will engage the gear most suited to starting the engine.

Note: never attempt this operation in reverse.

Operating faults

I When driving, if this warning light comes on, it indicates a

fault in the system. In most cases, you may still drive the vehicle, although it will not function perfectly. However, you should consult a RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

Towing a vehicle with a sequential gearboxIf the gearbox is stuck in a gear:– switch on the ignition;– select neutral with the brake pedal

depressed;– check that the gearbox is in neutral

(by pushing the vehicle, for example).

If you cannot find neutral you must tow the vehicle with the front wheels raised.The vehicle should always be towed with the ignition switched off.

Close the dashboard vents for more effective demisting.All the air is then directed to the windscreen and front side window demister outlets.

A Position (STOP position)

This function closes the air vent and stops ventilation (irrespective of the position of control C). This allows the passenger compartment to be isolated from the outside (driving in polluted areas, etc.).Prolonged used of the STOP function may cause some condensation.It is advisable to exit the STOP position as soon as you have left the polluted area.

Adjusting the amount of air blown into the passenger compartmentMove control C from 0 to 4.The passenger compartment is ventilated by blown air. K Passenger compartment isolation

Button ENormal operation of the heating and ventilation system is obtained using air from outside.Recirculation of air allows the external atmosphere to be isolated (driving in polluted areas, etc.).

Press button E K to switch to isolation mode.

Air recirculation allows the desired temperature to be achieved as quickly as possible.This starts or stops air recirculation. Operating tell-tale F lights up when the function is operational. In this position the air is taken from inside the passenger compartment and is recycled without letting air in from outside.

Prolonged use of isolation mode can lead to condensation forming on the side windows and windscreen and discomfort due to the use of non- renewed air in the passenger compartment.We therefore advise you to return to normal mode (external air) by pressing button E as soon as air recirculation is no longer required.

Control B switches the air conditioning on or off.The system cannot be switched on if control G is set to 0.

Using the air conditioning system enables you to:– lower the internal passenger com-

partment temperature, especially in hot weather, when driving in traffic or when the vehicle has been parked in the sun;

– reduce the humidity of the air blown into the passenger compartment (removal of condensation).

Fuel consumption increases when the air conditioning system is being used (switch it off when it is not required).

Note: The air conditioning may be used in all conditions but does not operate when the external temperature is low.– Button B not activated (indicator

light C off)The air conditioning is not operating.The settings are the same as a vehicle without air conditioning.

– Button B activated (indicator light C on)The air conditioning is activated.Air is taken from outside the vehicle, providing a continuous supply of fresh air.

In very hot weather or when the vehicle has been parked in the sun, open the doors for a few moments to let the hot air escape before starting the engine.Use the passenger compartment isolation function to lower the temperature as quickly as possible to the required comfort level. Switch off the air recirculation function once a comfortable level has been reached.

When the air conditioning system is operating, all windows must be closed for maximum efficiency.If there is an operating fault, contact your RENAULT Dealer.

If no cold air is producedCheck that the controls are set correctly and that the fuses are sound. If they are not, switch off the heating and air conditioning system (indicator light C goes out) and contact a RENAULT Dealer.

Do not open the refrigerant circuit: the fluid is harmful to the eyes and skin.

Operation of climate control (continued)To reach and maintain the selected temperature level, the system acts upon:– ventilation speed;– air distribution;– air recirculation management;– air conditioning (on or off).The indicator lights let you know what the system has selected.

The value on the display 3 indicates the comfort level.When the vehicle is started in cold or hot weather, increasing or decreasing the values displayed does not mean that the desired comfort level is reached more quickly (the system opti- mises the temperature increase or decrease whatever the air temperature indicated).

For optimum operation, we recommend that you leave the air vents open in all weathers.

Visibility (automatic de-icing - demisting)

Press button 5 W to operate windscreen de-icing/demisting by ventilation.The operating tell-tale comes on.The AUTO operating tell-tale light goes out.

This system quickly demists and de- ices the windscreen and the front side windows. To improve efficiency, the air conditioning is automatically switched on at the same time (indicator light comes on).The optimum flow of air is then directed towards the windscreen and front side window air outlets.

Press button 1 to return to automatic mode. Press button 5 again to switch off automatic windscreen demisting/de- icing mode.

You may wish to switch on the air conditioning once more if there are high levels of humidity.In this case, the air conditioning will operate permanently, whatever mode is selected afterwards.

Adjusting automatic modeThe system normally operates in automatic mode but you can alter the standard settings used by the system (amount of air, etc.).

The automatic mode is the recommended mode of use: in this mode the automatic climate control system guarantees comfort in the passenger compartment and good visibility (except in the event of extreme conditions), while optimising consumption.Return to automatic mode as soon as possible.

Switching air conditioning on or offIn automatic mode, the system switches the air conditioning system on or off, depending on external weather conditions.Exit automatic mode by pressing button 11: the AUTO indicator light 1 goes out.

Button 11 allows you to switch the air conditioning system on or off.Note: switching on the demisting/de- icing function (buttons 5 and 6) automatically switches on the air conditioning.

Varying the ventilation speedIn automatic mode, the system uses the most suitable amount of air to reach and maintain the desired comfort level.Automatic mode is switched off by pressing button 4 or 7.The indicator light on button 1 will go out.These buttons increase or decrease the amount of air blown into the passenger compartment.

In cold weather, the climate control system will not start immediately at maximum power but will increase progressively until the engine temperature is warm enough to heat the passenger compartment air. This may take between 30 seconds and several minutes.

K Air recirculation modePress button 6: operating tell-

tale light comes on.In this position the air is taken from inside the passenger compartment and is recycled without letting air in from outside.Recirculation of air allows the external atmosphere to be isolated (driving in polluted areas, etc.).

Prolonged use of the air recirculation mode may cause the windows to mist up or lead to odours, as the air is not renewed.We therefore advise you to return to normal mode (external air) as soon as the air recirculation function is no longer required, by pressing button 6 again.

Special featuresSwitching on air recirculation automatically switches on the air conditioning.The function operates periodically if the external temperature is lower than approximately 10°C; the indicator light on button 6 will go out after a few minutes.The function operates permanently if the external temperature is above approximately 10°C; press button 6 to switch off.

AIR CONDITIONING: information and advice on use

Fuel consumptionYou will normally notice an increase in fuel consumption (especially when driving in town) when the air conditioning is operating. For vehicles fitted with manual air conditioning, switch off the system when it is not required.Advice for reducing consumption and therefore helping to preserve the environment:Drive with the air vents open and the windows closed.If the vehicle has been parked in the sun, open the doors for a few moments to let the hot air escape before starting the engine.

MaintenanceRefer to the Maintenance Service Booklet for your vehicle for the in- spection frequency.

Operating faultsAs a general rule, contact your RENAULT Dealer in the event of an operating fault.– Reduction in de-icing, demist-

ing or air conditioning performance. This may be caused by the passenger compartment filter cartridge becoming clogged.

– No cold air is being produced. Check that the controls are set correctly and that the fuses are sound. Otherwise, switch off the system.

– Presence of water under the vehicle. After prolonged use of the air conditioning system, it is normal for water to be present under the vehicle. This is caused by condensation.

Do not open the refrigerant fluid circuit. The fluid may damage eyes or skin.

The seat base and the seatback may be folded down (one or both sections) to allow bulky objects to be carried.

ENGINE OIL LEVELIt is normal for an engine to use oil for lu- bricating and cooling moving parts and it is sometimes necessary to top up the level between oil changes. However, contact your RENAULT Dealer if more than 0.5 litres is being consumed every 600 miles (1,000 km) after the running in period.Oil change frequency: check the oil level from time to time and certainly before any long journey to avoid the risk of damaging your engine.

Reading the oil levelThe vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine should have been switched off for some time before- hand to obtain an accurate reading.The dipstick must be used to read the exact oil level and make sure that the maximum level has not been exceeded (risk of engine damage).Refer to the information on “Engine Oil Level/Topping-up/Filling” on the following pages.

The instrument panel display only alerts the driver when the oil level is at its minimum.Minimum oil level warning on instrument panelWhen the ignition has been switched on for approximately 30 seconds:– if the oil level is above the

minimum, the “Oil Ok” message comes up on the display: display message 1.This message refers to the level and not the grade.

The display only warns the driver if the oil level is at the minimum level. It does not inform the driver that the oil

level has exceeded the maximum level as this can only be measured using a dipstick.

Reading the level using the dipstick– take out the dipstick;– wipe the dipstick using a clean, lint-

free cloth;– push in the dipstick as far as it will

go;– take out the dipstick again;– read the level: it should never fall

below minimum mark B or exceed maximum mark A.



Exceeding the maximum engine oil levelUnder no circumstances should maximum filling level A be exceeded: this could lead to the engine racing or even irreparable damage to the engine.The oil level should only be read with the dipstick as explained above.If the maximum level is exceeded, do not start your vehicle and contact a RENAULT Dealer.

Consult your RENAULT Dealer at once if you notice an abnormal or repeated drop in any of the fluid levels.

BODYWORK MAINTENANCEProtection against the effects of corrosive agentsAlthough your vehicle has been treated with very effective anti-corrosion products, it nevertheless remains subject to the effects of:– corrosives in the atmosphere

– saline atmospheres (near the sea, particularly in hot weather),

– seasonal and damp climatic conditions, (eg.: road salt in winter, water from road cleaners, etc.).

– minor impactsYou should take a minimum number of precautions in order to safeguard your vehicle against such risks and not to lose the benefit of your vehicle’s anti- corrosion protection.

What you should not do– Wash the vehicle in bright sunlight or

freezing temperatures.– Scrape off mud or dirt without pre-

– Drive frequently in snow or muddy conditions without washing the vehicle, particularly under the wheel arches and body.

– Degrease or clean mechanical components (eg. the engine compartment), underneath the body, parts with hinges (eg. inside the fuel flap) and painted plastic external fittings (eg. bumpers) using high-pressure cleaning equipment or by spraying on products not approved by our Technical Department. If adequate precautions are not taken, this could give rise to corrosion or operational faults.

What you should do– Wash your vehicle frequently, with

the engine off, using cleaning products recommended by us (never use abrasive products), taking special care to rinse off:– spots of tree resin and industrial

grime;– bird droppings, which contain

chemicals that rapidly discolour paintwork and may even cause the paint to peel off;

Wash the vehicle immediately to remove these marks since it is impossible to remove them by pol- ishing;

– salt deposited in the wheel arches and the underneath the body after driving in areas where the roads have been gritted;

– mud in the wheel arches and underneath the body which forms damp patches.

– Keep well away from the vehicle in front when driving on gravel surfaces to prevent paint damage.

– Repair or have repaired quickly patches where the paint has been damaged to prevent corrosion spreading.

– Remember to visit the body shop periodically in order to maintain your RENAULT anti-corrosion warranty. Refer to the Maintenance Service Booklet.

– Respect local regulations about washing vehicles (eg. do not wash your vehicle on a public highway).

– Before going through a roller type car wash, return the windscreen wiper stalk to park position (refer to the information on the “Windscreen wash/wipe” in Section 1). Check the mounting of external accessories, additional lights, door mirrors, etc., and be sure to hold the wiper blades and radio aerial in place with adhe- sive tape.Remove the car phone aerial if fitted to the vehicle.

– Spray mechanical components, hinges, etc. with products approved by our Technical Department to protect them after they have been cleaned.

Tool kit 1 is located in the emergency spare wheel. It consists of a set of tools for various operations on the vehicle: jack, wheelbrace, towing hitch, etc. and a space for a bulb unit.

WHEEL TRIM – WHEELS

Wheel trim with concealed wheel bolts(e.g.: wheel trim 1)Remove it using a hubcap tool 3 (stored in the tool kit) or the end of the wheelbrace, inserting the hook into one of the slots around the edge.To refit it, align it with valve 2.Push the retaining hooks in fully, starting with side A near the valve, followed by B and C, finishing at D opposite the valve.

Central wheel trim(e.g.: wheel trim 4)Remove it using the hubcap tool (in the glove box) by inserting tool 5 into recess 6.To refit the wheel trim, align recess 6 with the wheel rim, clip the wheel trim back in place and use tool 5 to tighten the nut.

CHANGING A WHEEL

Remove the wheel trim (see the information on the “Wheel trims”).Undo the wheel bolts using wheelbrace 1, pressing downwards.Present the jack horizontally, the jack head must slide under the lower section of the body, as close as possible to the wheel concerned.Crank up the jack by hand at first to align the base plate (which should be inclined further inwards than the jack head). Place a plank of wood under the base plate if on soft ground.

Insert the wheelbrace hook 2 into the jack 3 and turn a few times to lift the wheel off the ground:Remove the bolts.Take off the wheel.Fit the emergency spare wheel on the central hub and turn it to locate the mounting holes in the wheel and the hub.Tighten the bolts and lower the jack.With the wheels on the ground, tighten the bolts as far as possible and check the tightness as soon as possible (tight- ening torque 105 Nm).

Park the vehicle away from traffic if possible and on level ground which is not slippery (place a plank

under the jack if necessary). Switch on the hazard warning lights.Apply the handbrake and select a gear (first or reverse, or position P for automatic gearboxes).Ask all the passengers to leave the vehicle and keep them away from traffic.

If you have a puncture, replace the wheel as soon as possible.A tyre which has been punc-

tured should always be inspected (and repaired, where possible) by a specialist.

TYRESTyre and wheel safetyThe tyres are the only contact between the vehicle and the road, so it is essential to keep them in good condition.You must make sure that your tyres con- form to local road traffic regulations.

When they need to be replaced, only tyres of the same make, size, type and profile should be used.

Tyres fitted to the vehicle should either be identical to those fitted originally or be of a type recommended by your RENAULT Dealer.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good condition and the tread form must have sufficient depth; tyres approved by our Technical Department have tread wear indicators 1, which are indicators moulded into the tread at several points.

When the tyre tread has been worn to the level of the wear indicators, they become visible 2: it is then necessary to replace your tyres because the tread rubber is no more than 1.6 mm deep, resulting in poor roadholding on wet roads.An overloaded vehicle, long journeys by motorway, particularly in very hot weather, or continual driving on poorly surfaced minor roads will lead to more rapid tyre wear and affect safety.

Incidents which occur when driving, such as striking the kerb, may damage the tyres and wheel rims, and

could also lead to misalignment of the front or rear axle geometry. If such incidents occur, have the condition of these parts checked by a RENAULT Dealer.

TYRES (continued)

Tyre pressuresTyre pressures must be adhered to (remember to check the emergency spare wheel at the same time). These must be checked at least once a month and before any long journey. Refer to the information on “Tyre pressures” in this handbook or, depending on the vehicle, to the label located on the edge of the driver’s door.

Pressures should be checked when the tyres are cold; ignore higher pressures which may be reached in hot weather or following a fast journey.If tyre pressures cannot be checked when the tyres are cold, the normal pressures must be increased by 0.2 to 0.3 bar (or 3 PSI).Never deflate a hot tyre.

Fitting new tyres

Changing wheels aroundThis practice is not recommended.

Emergency spare wheelRefer to the information on the “Emergency spare wheel” and “Changing a wheel” in Section 5.

Incorrect tyre pressures lead to abnormal tyre wear and unusually hot running. These are factors which

may seriously affect safety and lead to:– poor roadholding– the risk of blow-outs or of throw-

ing a tread.Tyre pressures depend on the load and the driving speed. Adjust the pressures according to the conditions of use. (Refer to the information on “Tyre pressures”).

Please be aware that a poorly tightened or miss- ing valve cap can make the tyres less airtight and may

lead to pressure loss.Always use valve caps identical to those fitted originally and tighten them fully.

For safety reasons, this operation must be carried out by a specialist.Fitting different tyres may

change your vehicle as follows:– It may mean that your vehicle no

longer conforms to current regulations;

– It may change the way it handles when cornering;

– it may cause the steering to be heavy;

– It may cause tyre noise;– It may affect the use of snow

chains.

Use in winterChainsFor safety reasons, fitting snow chains to the rear axle is strictly for- bidden.Chains cannot be fitted to tyres which are larger than those originally fitted to the vehicle.

Snow or Winter tyresWe would recommend that these be fitted to all four wheels to ensure that your vehicle retains maximum adhesion.Warning: These tyres sometimes have a specific direction of rotation and a maximum speed index which may be lower than the maximum speed of your vehicle.

In all cases, we would recommend that you contact your RENAULT Dealer, who will be able to advise you on the choice of equipment that is most suitable for your vehicle.

Chains may only be fitted to tyres of the same size as those originally fitted to your vehicle.

Only certain chains can be fitted to tyres. Contact your RENAULT Dealer.

Studded tyresThis type of equipment may only be used for a limited period and as laid down by local legislation.It is necessary to observe the speed specified by current legislation.These tyres must, at a minimum, be fitted to the two front wheels.

WINDSCREEN WIPER BLADESRefitting a front or rear wiper bladeTo refit the wiper blade, proceed in reverse order of removal. Make sure that the blade is correctly locked in position.

Replacing windscreen wiper blades 1– Lift the wiper arm 3.– Turn the wiper blade until it is hori-

zontal.– Press tab 2 and slide the wiper blade

downwards to release hook 4 from the wiper arm.

– Slide the blade (A) then lift it (B) to release it.

BATTERY: troubleshootingTo avoid all risk of sparks– Ensure that all electrical equipment

is switched off before disconnecting or reconnecting the battery.

– When charging, stop the charger before connecting or disconnecting the battery.

– Do not place metal objects on the battery to avoid creating a short circuit between the terminals.

Connecting a battery chargerThe battery charger should be com- patible with a battery with a nominal voltage of 12 Volts.It is essential to disconnect both battery leads from the terminals (engine stopped) starting with the negative terminal.Do not disconnect the battery when the engine is running. Follow the instructions given by the manufacturer of the battery charger you are using.

Only a fully charged and well-maintained battery will have a long and useful life and enable you to start the vehicle’s engine normally.The battery must be kept clean and dry.Have the battery’s charge status checked regularly:– Especially if you use your vehicle for

short journeys or for frequent driving in town.

– When the exterior temperature drops (in winter), the charge decreases. In winter, only use electrical equipment which is really necessary.

– Finally, you should understand that the charge decreases naturally as a result of certain permanent electrical consumers such as the clock, after- sales accessories, etc.

When many accessories are fitted to the vehicle, have them connected to the + after ignition feed. In this case, it is advisable to have your vehicle fitted with a battery which has an increased nominal capacity. Contact your RENAULT Dealer.If your vehicle is to be left stationary for a relatively long time, disconnect the battery or have it recharged regularly, particularly during cold weather. The equipment with a memory, radio etc. will then have to be reprogrammed. The battery must be stored in a cool dry place, protected from frost.

Special procedures may be required to charge some batteries. Contact your RENAULT Dealer.

Avoid all risk of sparks which may cause an immediate explosion, and charge the battery in a well-ventilated area.Risk of serious injury.

Starting the vehicle using the battery from another vehicleProceed as follows when starting your vehicle from another vehicle’s battery:Obtain suitable jump leads (with a large cross section) from a RENAULT Dealer or, if you already have jump leads, ensure that they are in perfect condition.The two batteries must have an identical nominal voltage of 12 volts. The battery supplying the current should have a capacity (amp-hours, Ah) which is at least the same as that of the discharged battery.Ensure that there is no risk of contact between the two vehicles (risk of short circuiting when the positive terminals are connected) and that the discharged battery is properly connected. Switch off your vehicle ignition.Start the engine of the vehicle supplying the current and run it at an intermediate engine speed.

Connect positive (+) lead A to (+) terminal 1 of the discharged battery, then to (+) terminal 2 of the battery supplying the current.Connect negative (–) lead B to (–) terminal 3 of the battery supplying the current and then to (–) terminal 4 of the discharged battery.

Check that there is no contact between leads A and B and that positive (+) lead A is not touching any metal parts on the vehicle supplying the current.Start the engine as you would normally. As soon as it is running, disconnect leads A and B in the reverse order (4-3-2-1).

Handle the battery with care as it contains sulphuric acid, which must not come into contact with eyes or skin. If

it does, wash the affected area with plenty of cold water.Ensure that naked flames, red hot objects and sparks do not come into contact with the battery as there is a risk of explosion.Take care when working in the engine compartment as the engine cooling fan may start to operate at any moment without warning.Risk of injury.

TOWING: breakdown

The steering wheel must be unlocked and the ignition key must be in position M (ignition on) to provide stop lights and direction indicators on the towed vehicle. At night the vehicle must have its lights on.You must observe the towing regulations which apply in the country in which you are driving: do not exceed the towing weight for your vehicle. Contact your RENAULT Dealer.

Only use towing ring 2 located in tool kit 1 (refer to the information on the “Tool kit” in Section 5), front towing point 3 and rear towing point 5 (never the driveshafts). These towing points may only be used for pulling the vehicle, never for lifting it either directly or indirectly.

– RENAULT recommends the use of a rigid towing bar. If a rope or cable is used (where the law allows this),

the vehicle being towed must be able to brake.

– A vehicle must not be towed if it is not fit to be driven.

– Do not accelerate or brake suddenly when towing, as this may result in damage being caused to the vehicle.

– When towing a vehicle, do not exceed 15 mph (25 km/h).

Towing a vehicle with an automatic gearbox: special notesWith the engine switched off: the gearbox is no longer lubricated. It is preferable to tow this type of vehicle on a trailer or tow it with the front wheels off the ground.Under exceptional circumstances, you may tow the vehicle with all four wheels on the ground, only going forward, with the gear shift in the Neutral position, and for a distance not exceeding 30 miles (50 km).

When the engine is stopped, steering and braking assistance are not operational.

The gear lever must be in position N (neutral).If the lever becomes jammed in position P, even though you are pressing down the brake pedal, the lever can be released manually.To do this, unclip cover B and simultaneously press lug (located underneath cover B) and unlocking button A to move the lever out of position P.

The following advice will enable you to carry out quick, temporary repairs. For safety reasons you should always contact a RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

The starter is activated CAUSES WHAT TO DO

– There is no response, the warning lights fail to light up and the starter does not operate.

Battery lead disconnected or terminals corroded.

Check battery terminals: scrape and clean if oxidised and retighten.

Discharged battery. Connect another battery to the faulty battery.

– Warning lights go dim and starter turns very slowly.

On the road CAUSES WHAT TO DO

– Steering becomes heavy. Belt broken. Have the belt replaced.

Insufficient oil in pump. Top up the power-assisted steering fluid level (refer to the information on the “Power-assisted steering pump” in Section 4).If the fault is still present, contact a RENAULT Dealer.

– The engine overheats. The coolant temperature warning light comes on (or the indicator needle is in the red area).

Coolant pump: belt stretched or broken.Engine cooling fan not working.

Stop the vehicle and switch off the engine. Contact a RENAULT Dealer.

Coolant leaks. Check the condition of hoses and the tightness of the clips.Check the expansion bottle: it should contain coolant. If it does not, top it up (once it has cooled). Take care not to scald yourself. This action is only temporary: contact your RENAULT Dealer as soon as possible.

Radiator: in the event of a very low water level, remember that it must not be topped up with cold water when the engine is very hot. After any procedure on the vehicle which has involved even partial draining of the cooling system, it must be refilled with a new mixture prepared in the correct proportions. Reminder: only products approved by our Technical Department may be used for this purpose.

(1) Towing weight (towing a caravan, boat, etc.)– It is important to comply with the towing weights, governed by local legislation in each country and, in particular, laid down in

the Road Traffic Regulations. Contact your RENAULT Dealer about any towing attachments. Under no circumstances may the total train weight (= maximum permissible all-up weight plus weight towed) be exceeded.

– If your vehicle is already used fully laden (maximum permissible all-up weight), the maximum speed must be limited to 60 mph (100 km/h) and the tyre inflation pressure increased by 0.2 bar.

– The engine output and climbing capability are reduced with altitude. We recommend that the maximum load be reduced by 10% at an altitude of 1,000 metres and by an additional 10% for each 1,000 metres thereafter.

4 SIMPLE ACTIONS*FOR YOUR SAFETY

* Warning: these actions do not constitute an exhaustive list. Refer to your Driver’s Handbook for more information.

• Always fasten your seat belt,– even for short journeys– even if your vehicle is

fitted with air bags.

• Make sure that all passengers have fastened their seat belts, even in the back.

• Always secure children using devices suitable for their size and weight (seat, shell seat, etc.).

• Important! If the vehicle is fitted with front passenger air bags which can be disconnected, disconnect them before installing a rear-facing baby seat.

• Place heavy objects or luggage at the back of the luggage compartment.

• Distribute the load between the right-hand and left-hand sides in the loading area when transporting goods.

• Adjust the height of the seat belt according to your size.

• Adjust the angle of your seatback ensuring that the seat belt remains in contact with your body.

• Adjust the height of the headrest: headrest height = top of your head.Headrest as close as possible to the head.
