• The industry that processes carcasses and offal, rendering, ensures that

the human food chain remains free from these animal remains.

• They are unsuitable to be reprocessed into anything else but animal feed.

• The rendering process starts when carcasses and offal arrive. First, all is

ground and left to boil for twenty minutes in water at 130°C, then the liquid

is transferred to a flash tank.

• An air-cooled rendering condenser removes most of the cooking steam

under very slight overpressure.

• It aims to condense the steam and cool the condensate to a maximum of

35°C.

• This is necessary as bio waste water purification processes the

condensate and active bacteria in the purification will die if temperatures

reach more than 40°C.

• The reason behind condensing the steam is its awful smell which is

neutralised during this process.

• The broth of meat, which is what is left in the flash tank, is dried using the

heat in disk dryers until it has reached a water content of 5%.

Challenge / question

First grind up. Leave to cook for twenty minutes. Then

the flash tank, condensation and disk dryers.

• One of our clients is faced with a high

level of fouling and corrosion during the

process due to aggressive cooking

steam.

• The process operators lack knowledge

of the equipment.

• Production is paramount as the client is

paid according to the number of

processed carcasses and amount of

offal.

• The client requires a solution for the

corrosion problems.

• He would like an operator-friendly

installation that is easy to keep clean

and has an absolute minimum of

downtime.

Solution

First grind up. Leave to cook for twenty minutes. Then

the flash tank, condensation and disk dryers.

• All our components that come in contact with

steam are made from stainless steel.

• Clasps on lids enable quick and frequent

cleaning. Inspection eye-glasses are put in

place to keep on eye on things.

• We found out that the operators release

steam of 100°C on the condenser after the

installation restart, even when it is freezing

outside.

• The tubes of every 'normal' condenser that

has welded and/or rolled tube-to-plate

connections would bend due to the less

optimal steam distribution.

Solution

First grind up. Leave to cook for twenty minutes. Then

the flash tank, condensation and disk dryers.

• In order to prevent this from happening,

we have welded the tubes in our air-

cooled condenser only on one side.

• The other side has a special sliding

connection.

• Therefore, the tubes are able to

individually expand and shrink free of

tension.

• This prevents other tubes with less steam

from having to bear a transfer of tension

forces.

• The result is a complete and distortion free

cold/hot start condenser.

• The operators can rest assured when

releasing steam in full flow on our

condensers.
