Renegade Networks:
How We Can Save the World, Make a Little Cash & Get to the Party Before Midnight
Leigh W. Jerome, Ph.D.Summer, 2011
From the moment we are born…
we begin organizing information
We categorize information -
…so we can understand the world
…we can communicate
…so we can create new knowledge
We organize informationfrom our own point of view
We perceive and store all the information
we take in with an egocentric bias.
We organize our networks the same way
We organize information into categories
Historically knowledge has been organized into categories and hierarchies.
We organize education the same way
Education is organized into disciplines - by particular areas of knowledge and expertise.
Knowledge is highly specialized
As technology and information becomes
more complex and sophisticated,
knowledge has become elite and specialized.
Our tools for organizing information have changed
Knowledge
Acquaintance with or understanding of a science, art, or technique
Accelerating Innovation
Trust
A belief in character, ability, integrity, familiarity, and morality
Respect
Willingness to show consideration or appreciation
Communication
An act or instance of transmitting

Social networks have NOT changed
The technology of social networks have evolved but our networks remain egocentric, arranged around our interests, needs and friends
We’d really like to save the world
The big problems are so big -
But we get involved anyway
We need to make a little cash
The problem is incentives…
• We work long hours
• Unemployment is high
• Benefits are low
• Labor force is stretched
…there are none
• We are rewarded for
staying in our silos
• No incentives to cross
across boundaries
Any chance of getting to the party?
The problem is time…
• We work very hard
• Work is always on
• The pace of life is fast
• We have families
and careers
• Is it just about buying stuff?
• Communities with purpose
• Working together
• Building a better world
…but what is our time for?
The Solution - Renegade Networks
There are models:
- Wikipedia
- InnoCentive
- Quirky
• We need a network that gives us incentives for busting silos
• We need a network that empowers us to collaborate in ways we can’t think of alone
• We need a network that helps us to build a better world, together
We need a network:
