The Smart Vehicle,Ushering in the New Automotive Age
In order to achieve a low-carbon society,
automobiles must become more fuel efficient and less dependent on petroleum.
Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles have become more popular in recent years,
and now development is proceeding on a new generation of so-called smart vehicles
that will take advantage of the growing fusion with information technology to achieve a higher level of “intelligence.”
Unlike conventional stand-alone vehicles, the new smart vehicles will be capable of bidirectional communication
with a “smart community” through interoperability with intelligent transport systems (ITS)
using high-speed data communication technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE).
It is expected that these developments will help bring about a new driving experience characterized
by energy efficiency, low carbon emissions, safety, and convenience.
Zero/Low EmissionThere is tremendous demand for vehicles with low exhaust emissions and excellent fuel efficiencyto help reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.Microcontrollers and other semiconductor devices will play an enormous role in achieving zero or low emissions.
Safety/SecurityThere is a need for technology to reduce traffic accidents by preventing them before they occur as well as technologyto reduce the harm to persons and objects when accidents do occur.Microcontrollers with powerful processing capabilities are particularly essential to efforts to make driving safer.
ComfortPersonalizing functions increase comfort in the vehicle's interior “living space” by automatically identifying the driver and passengers, adjusting the interior illumination to the desired level, and making settings for seat positions, HVAC*, and the like.Microcontrollers and analog semiconductor devices are essential to creating added value in this way.
ConnectivityAlongside existing functionality for interoperating with smart phones to share and manipulate information, the capability to communicate with other vehicles and even the road itself is starting to become a reality, for example by allowing drivers to obtain traffic information in real time.Microcontrollers, authentication ICs, and SoCs are essential to the realization of sophisticated driver support functions.
Renesas is the world's No. 1 supplier of microcontrollers. We also provide a broad array of solutions in categories other than microcontrollers, such as analog semiconductor devices, power semiconductor devices, authentication ICs (secure microcontrollers), and SoCs.Building on our proven track record in the automotive field, we are contributing to the realization and widespread adoption of smart vehicles.

aimed at lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions are being made constantly in motor and regeneration control, and they require MCUs with high perfor -
mance and advanced functions.
Renesas responds to this demand with an extensive lineup of MCUs incorporating high-performance CPUs, timers and ADC functions ideal for motor and regenera-
tion control, and RDCs for a further reduction in system cost. We also supply analog and power devices suitable for motor-generator systems.

MCU Roadmap for HEV/EV
Motor-Generator Control System
HEVs and EVs* are growing in popularity amid calls to reduce vehicle CO2 emissions in order to slow global warming. HEVs are powered by a system that combines a conventional internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The electric motor provides motive power when starting from a stationary state, when driving at low speed, and during sudden acceleration, lowering fuel consumption and reducing CO2 emissions. When decelerating, the motor acts as a generator, converting mechanical energy into electricity and charging the HEV’s battery (regeneration control) as the vehicle slows down. EVs, in contrast, have no internal combustion engine at all and use only an electric motor for both motive power and regeneration. For this reason, EVs have lower CO2 emissions than HEVs. Both HEV and EV systems consume large amounts of electricity when running on the motor. They therefore carry special high-voltage batteries (with output of several hundred volts) designed specifically for HEVs and EVs and unlike the batteries found in conventional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. These HEV/EV batteries are equipped with voltage detection and charging control functions.Renesas offers kits comprising MCUs, ASICs, power devices (IGBTs, power MOSFETs), etc., for implementing the new technologies (motor generator systems, battery control systems, battery charger and DC/DC control systems) used in HEV and EV systems.

Battery Charger / DC-DC Control System
As emissions and fuel economy requirements become stricter year by year, demand has grown formore precise control in powertrain systems. The trend toward industry standardization and theincorporation of cooperative control, as well as the increasingly bifurcated demands ofenvironmental technology, on the one hand, and emerging markets, on the other, are increasingperformance requirements for MCUs.The Renesas SH705x Series of MCUs for powertrain systems is already well-established in themarketplace, and it is now joined by an extensive lineup of MCUs built around more powerful RH850 CPU cores, enabling further improvements in performance alongside reduced powerconsumption. These MCUs, combined with a lineup of power ICs, peripheral ICs, power MOSFETs,CAN transceivers, and other devices, enable Renesas to offer total solutions.

An engine ECU must provide real-time control in order to realize low fuel consumption. In recent years, new control functions have been added to handle capabilities
such as mechanisms that automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle is stopped and regeneration systems that utilize mechanical energy during decelera-
tion. Other efforts to improve fuel efficiency within the engine itself include use of continuously variable exhaust valve mechanisms and high-volume EGR* systems
to reduce pumping loss.
As solutions to increasingly complex control requirements such as these, Renesas supplies MCUs combining high-performance CPUs and low power consumption for
engine ECU systems and an extensive lineup of analog and power devices.
* EGR: Exhaust Gas Recirculation
Gasoline Engine SystemAmong internal combustion engines, diesel engines boast excellent thermal efficiency and can burn fuel that is not highly refined. They use a compression ignition
system in which intake air is pressurized and fuel is injected into it, causing it to self-ignite. Such systems are not prone to knocking even when supercharging is used,
so most diesel engines are used in conjunction with superchargers.
As solutions to increasingly complex control requirements such as these, Renesas supplies MCUs combining high-performance CPUs and low power consumption for
diesel engine ECU systems, and an extensive lineup of analog and power devices.
Diesel Engine System
Direct injection systems, in which a high-pressure fuel pump pressurizes the fuel for injection directly into the cylinder by an injector, provide greater freedom in the
injection timing and volume than MPI* systems. This can be expected to provide improved fuel economy.
As solutions to increasingly complex control requirements such as these, Renesas supplies MCUs combining high-performance CPUs and low power consumption for
direct injection engine ECU systems and an extensive lineup of analog and power devices.

* Chassis system examples: Electric power steering (EPS), electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock braking system (ABS). Safety system example: Airbag system.
As the use of electronic control and electrically powered functions in vehicles continues to grow, there is demand for a high level of safety and environmental friendliness in chassis and safety systems,* which deal with operations related to steering and braking. Moving forward, automotive systems will be expected to comply with the ISO 26262 functional safety standard for vehicles. In terms of the functions and performance of MCUs, this is spurring demand for safety mechanisms such as redundant cores, powerful processing capabilities, the ability to communicate with peripheral devices, high-precision ADCs, and low power consumption.Renesas satisfies this demand and supports automakers wishing to build safer vehicles with optimized solutions based on an extensive lineup of MCUs and analog and power devices ranging from the low to the high end of the market.

* ASIL: Automotive Safety Integrity Level.
ASIL-D is the highest Automotive Safety Integrity Level.
As part of efforts to make their vehicles more environmentally friendly, carmakers have increasingly been switching from hydraulic steering assist systems
to electric power steering (EPS) using electric motors in order to reduce weight and boost fuel efficiency. In recent years there is a trend toward linking
functions that assist the driver in operating the vehicle to the EPS system, for example by providing continuously variable steering gear ratio adjustment
according to the running speed and steering angle, in addition to simple power shift functionality. This creates demand for MCUs capable of supporting
sophisticated motor control with features such as high-performance CPU, large memory capacity, dedicated timer units, high-speed, high-precision A/D
converters, and interfaces for communicating with other control units.
In addition, the ISO 26262 functional safety standard for the automotive field has been issued in 2011 amid rising concerns over vehicle safety.
Systems that require the highest level of safety, such as the steering and brakes, typically require compliance with ASIL-D,* the highest safety level. This
has led to demand for MCUs incorporating safety mechanisms such as redundant cores.
Renesas supplies optimized solutions to support system advances, based on technology such as high-performance lock step dual CPU cores.
Electric Power Steering (EPS)The use of satellite collision sensors in airbag systems is increasing, with the aim of providing a higher level of passenger safety in the event of an accident. MCUs
must deliver powerful performance in order to be able to process at high speed the large volume of data input by these sensors. There is also a need for flexible
peripheral interfaces such as high-speed SPIs* for communication with peripheral devices, timer modules for cooperative control with other ECUs, and CAN modules.
Based on an extensive product lineup ranging from the low to the high end of the market, Renesas offers solutions for all sorts of safety systems, from passenger
detection to airbag unit control. We also supply squib drivers and sensor ASICs based on analog products that have an extensive track record in automotive applica-
tions conforming to a system approach. * SPI: Serial Peripheral Interface
Airbag
There are many types of brake systems, such as ABS,* skidding prevention, brake pedal assist functions, regenerative braking for hybrid and electric vehicles, and
electric parking brake systems. These, place a variety of functional and performance demands on MCUs. Brake systems also show the trend towards the use of MCUs
incorporating safety mechanisms such as redundant cores, to meet the highest automotive safety level standard.
Renesas satisfies these system requirements with optimized solutions based on an extensive lineup of MCUs and analog and power devices ranging from the low to
the high end of the market.

MCU Roadmap for Body
Body systems are making ever more extensive use of electronics to provide enhanced vehiclecomfort and safety. Examples include power windows, auto air conditioners, systems for controlling the seat position to match the driver, headlight illumination control linked to the steering angle, and anti-theft systems. There needs to be support for integration and reuse across systems. For example, the expansion of MCAL* for Renesas automotive MCUs conforming to AUTOSAR standard enables development work spanning different vehicle body types and models. This contributes to increased system stability, better quality, and reduced cost through economies of scale. In addition, the popularization in recent years of HEVs and EVs is increasing demand for lighter weight and reduced dark-current noise in body systems due to their direct connection with battery performance.Renesas responds to these requirements with kit solutions combining MCUs, analog ASICs, power MOSFETs, etc.
Body A body control module (BCM) integrates several functions, including various lights and door locks. It has a gateway function for communication with a CAN or LIN.
Such a unit requires components with CAN/LIN network support, a selection of package sizes and memory capacities to match a variety of system scales, low EMI to
prevent radio noise interference with vehicle wiring systems, and low current consumption to reduce battery drain when in standby status.
Renesas offers kit solutions comprising MCUs, analog devices, and power devices for optimized body control. Also, we supply power devices and LED headlight
controllers with overcurrent detection and diagnostic functions, enabling low current consumption in LED headlight units, which have become increasingly popular
in recent years.

High-intensity discharge electric headlights, which have grown in
popularity in recent years, require electronic control by an MCU. In
addition, since this unit is housed in the engine compartment, the
MCU must be compact and capable of operating in a wide range of
temperatures. Networking capabilities are also important due to
the resent trend toward linkage with an AFS.*
Renesas CAN/LIN MCUs are perfect for such applications. They are
available in small package sizes and have a wide guaranteed
operating temperature range of –40°C to 125°C.

Power Door
The main (driver side) MCU of a power window or door unit requires
CAN/LIN networking capabilities, and the sub-MCU (passenger
side/back) must support LIN networking. In addition, high-speed
operation performance is needed to implement automatic-
reversing safety functions.
Renesas offers a broad lineup of compact, high-performance MCUs

MCU Roadmap for Car Audio
Today’s car audio systems offer more than radio and audio CD playback. They are also expected to provide multifunctional capabilities such as connection to mobile music players and hands-free calling via mobile phones using Bluetooth. In addition, the number of products equipped with a rearview monitor display or TFT display for enhanced ease of operation is increasing. At the same time, there is demand for affordably priced audio systems that provide radio and mobile music player connection via USB but no CD capabilities, particularly in emerging economies.Renesas offers solutions for systems for the car audio market ranging from the affordable to the high-end. The V850 Series is ideal for system control and vehicle networking applications, while the SH7260 Series and AE1-L/AE1-LF are perfect for connectivity applications based on standards such as USB and Bluetooth.

Display Audio /Connectivity Audio
Display audio and connectivity audio systems are not limited
to radio and audio CD playback. There is also demand for
multifunctional capabilities such as connection to mobile
music players and hands-free calling via mobile phones using
Bluetooth. In addition, the number of products equipped
with a TFT display, to implement a rearview monitor function
for example, is increasing.
Renesas supplies the SH7260 Series of 32-bit RISC MCUs for
such applications. The SH7260 Series integrates on-chip
functions such as an SD memory card interface, USB, CD-ROM
decoder, and serial sound interface. With the addition of
decoder middleware for formats such as MP3 and WMA, it can
function as a media processor while also serving as a video
display controller and as a graphics IC equipped with large-
capacity RAM.
Renesas also offers a lineup of sub-MCUs for power manage-
ment and system control, as well as devices such as CD
processors. These make it possible to add expansion functions
in a flexible manner and help shorten the time required for
system development. Renesas solutions simplify the process
of building display audio and connectivity audio systems.
Mech-Less AudioThe “mech-less” audio system is a simple and popularly
priced type of car audio system with USB audio and
radio functions.
Renesas offers a lineup of devices that are ideal for
systems of this type. They include the 78K0 Series and
78K0R Series of control MCUs for the tuner, USB audio
decoder, and display blocks.
The AE1-L and AE1-LF integrate on a single chip the
functions required by the USB audio decoder. In their
standard configurations both the AE1-L and AE1-LF
include the software needed for USB control, MP3,
WMA, and AAC decoding, WAV file playback, file system
management, and system control over these functions.
This means that USB audio functions can be imple-
mented through the issuance of s imple control
commands by the MCU, substantially reducing the time
required for development. In addition, Renesas provides
a lineup of audio analog ICs such as electronic volume
controls and equalizers that can be used in conjunction
with the above devices to simplify the process of
building “mech-less” audio systems.

• Preparing the hardware needed for system safety design as platforms
• Customer support covering both hardware and software aspects
When designing a system, one does not first examine the basic functional requirements of the system and then examine the safety requirements as an afterthought. These two sets of requirements must be considered at the same time as part of the design process. While doing this it is important to maintain an optimal balance among system implementation practicality, performance, and cost.Renesas has experience in a wide variety of applications through working with customers over the years. We can provide optimal, well-balanced functional safety solutions based on this extensive expertise.

List of Power MOSFET Products
NP Series Ultralow On-Resistance Series for In-Vehicle Applications
The NP Series of power MOSFET products was developed to withstand the severe conditions typical of the in-vehicle field. They can tolerate channel temperatures up to 175 degrees, making them ideal for automotive applications. The combination of a trench gate process and high-performance package makes possible ultralow on-resistance and large current ratings in the top class in the industry.
Tch (max.) = 175°C
