    Vietnam war legacies

    The US army used approx. 15.35 milliontons of munitions during wartime, 800tons of unexploded ordnance remainscattered.

    6,6 million hectares of land confirmed tobe contaminated, accounting for 21 % of

    the countrys total area.

    42.135 deaths and 62.163 injuries dueto UXO accidents. Most of them havebeen breadwinners and children.

    Quang Tri: Legacy of unexplodedordnance

    Quang Tri has the highest UXcontamination level, about 8

    Since 1975, the province has7,075 casualties, including 231% of the victims have bee

    Risk Education

    Goal: Reinforce public awarenessof the dangers of UXO, encouragecommunities to report UXOsightings as a means of supportingEOD operations

    Interventions:

    Set up & maintain a

    community reporting networkbased on Youth Union andvillage chiefs.

    Disseminate safety messageand reporting mechanism tolocals.

    Provide UXO information to

    EOD teams for removal.

    Victim Assistance

    Goal: Build up local emergencyresponse capacity and help improvelivelihoods of UXO victims.

    Interventions:

    Training first responders includingmedical workers, volunteers andresidents.

    Mobile prosthetic and orthoticprogram.

    Initiatives to assist UXO victimfamilies to earn extra incomes.

    600 first responders trainequipped.
