RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY
INTRODUCTION
2
Energy comes from natural resources,Which have potential of being continiousaly replenished.
Such as Solar EnergyWind EnergyHydro EnergyGeothermal Energy
Overview
3
About 19% of global energy consumption came from RENEWABLES.
13% came from Biomass, used for heating3.2% came from Hydroelectricity2.7% came from other Renewables
Contribution Of Renewables In Global Electricity Generation
4
18% of total global electricity generation is shared by the Renewables
While 15% is contributed by Hydroelectricity alone
and 3% is contributed by new Renewables
5
Solar Energy
INTRODUCTION
6
Energy derived from the sun in the form of radiation is Solar Energy.
Solar Energy applications include :- i) Space Heating & Cooling through Solar
Architectures ii) Solar Cooking; Daylighting iii) High temperature processes heat for
industrial purposes It can be harnessed in two ways:- (1) Direct (2) Indirect
Direct Harnessing Of Solar Energy
7
It is used directly as in Solar cookers,Solar water heater, Solar furnace
It can also be directly converted into electrical energy as in case of Solar Cells.
Indirect Harnessing Of Solar Energy
8
It includes Orienting a building to the Sun,Selecting materials with favourable thermal mass or Light dispersing properties & designing spaces that natuarally circulate air.
SOLAR CELLS
A device which directly converts solar energy into electrical Energy due to generation of potential difference.
Now a days Monocrystalline solar cells are being used which are more effective than that of ordinary solar cells.
9
Advantages of Solar Energy
10
Solar Cells are used to provide electrical energy to the satellites.
It is natuarally & abundantly available clean, pollution free and a renewable source of energy.
11
WIND ENERGY
INTRODUCTION
12
Moving air is Wind, it is produced by the temperature differences in the air.
The energy obtained from wind is called wind energy
Wind is used to run a windmill which in turn , drives generator to produce power.
Wind mills are erected over a large area, which is known as Wind Farm.
Potential Of Wind Energy
13
The Netherland is famous for it,s windmills. In India Gujarat & Tamilnadu have
windmill,in which Kannyakumari has largest windmill with potential of 38OMW of electricity.
Advantages of Wind Energy
14
It is inexpensive ,pollution free & is abundantly available in nature.
It can be generated and supplied to remote areas where other energy resources are not available.
15
HYDRO ENERGY
INTRODUCTION
16
Running water has tremendous energy. This energy can be used for running turbine to generate electricity.
Water is collected at a certain height in huge reservior, this water has a lot of potential energy, this energy use to run turbine to generate electricity.
It is an important source of electricity generation.
Potential Of Hydro Energy
17
India has a number of hydro electric plants : Damodar valley project ,Hirakund Dam, Bhakra Dam
Now a days small hydroelectric projects have great potential for supplying electricity in India, two projects with 150 kW & 200 kW have been installed in Himachal Pradesh & one with 300kW at Kakroi in Haryana.
Advantages of Hydro Energy
18
It is inexpensive ,pollution free.It have low operating cost.It helps in to control floods.
19
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Geothermal Energy
20
As “Geo” means earth; “Thermal” means heat.
The heat inside the earth, under favourable conditions, can be utilised as a source of energy, this is called geothermal energy.
In other words “the heat energy from hot rocks present inside the earth”.
Harnessing Of Geothermal Energy
21
In some geological regions of the Earth, the underground water comes in contact with hot spots and changes into steam. The steam so formed ,gets trapped in between the underground rocks and gets compressed to very, very high pressure.
This steam is extracted from the surface by sinking pipes from the surface, which is used in running turbines connected to the generator, which produces electricity.
Potential Of Geothermal Energy
22
Geothermal Energy is the newest among all so it does not have any cotribution of power generation in India
But in some of the parts of world it geologically exists in present in US,Chile,Iceland,New Zealand.
Iceland produces 170MW of energy.Presently 8000MW of global capacity is
operational.
Advantages Of Geothermal Energy
23
It is stable and most reliable source of energy as it is not affected by weather or seasonal changes.
Energy emission is much lesser as compared to others.

Need To Promote Renewables
25
Renewables provide an enormous opportunity for India,to not only meet its energy needs but also to reap the social & environmental benefits.
Local environmental benefits such as land reclamation and pollution abatment
Global environmental benefits such as reduction in greenhouse gasses emission.
